This. It's not like the entire game industry just disappeared in 1983 and there were no more video games, but publishers and developers just started dropping like flies. The devs who remained brought gaming into a golden age.

No, dumbfrick. You are never getting another video game crash. a global economic downturn is not the same thing as just having a gaming crash like in the 80's. That is never happening again.

        Anonymous

I doubt there will be a crash, just a shift in focus towards indie games. Unless you've got some bullshit non-job in an AAA studio, there's basically no incentive to work for large studios. You've got no real input on the game's development unless you suck a lot of wieners to work your way up to a lead developer position, you've got no real job security and will probably just be laid off at the game's development cycle, and depending on the studio and/or publisher you may need to work hours so brutal at times that you're essentially living in the studio itself. There's very little incentive to not just go indie, especially since just about every tool you need to make vidya is either free or has free alternatives so there really isn't as much of a need to rely on big publishers.
tl;dr: studios and publishers are dying because there's no incentive to work for them when you're better off working on your own or with a small team of friends

it's a little deeper where it's just monopoly momentum eating up small studio IP. doesn't even matter if anything is the next big thing when you're pumping out CoD 37 and Fifa 2129 for eternity and all the profit goes to killing off any possible competition.

      Which studios are closing?

all of them eventually because most people are either poor managers or sellouts. if you can't come swooping in and add some broke companies cheap IP to your library just convince them it's better to take a million today and it's over.

Why are asian studios flourishing and western ones closing??

hollywood big hit moonshot mindset is overwhelming in america. even a lot of the immigrants think they are just going to come here and make it big often get a large dose of reality. it might be somewhat easier to make more money but you still have to work pretty hard to make a better living and real upward mobility after that is often hard to find.

The AAA business model is just not sustainable anymore, why would just spend 6 years and half a billion dollars making a video game when you've got shit like Palworld topping the most played games of all time on the Steam charts? Now we also have AI which is gonna lower the bar of entry even more.

We are literally going back to the era of 6 guys making a video game in their garage and that's a good thing.

Eh that's like saying that "why invest dozens of millions when Minecraft is the most played game"

It's amazing how so many major investors lack the distinction between revenues and profits, particularly profit margins. Of course with some publishers putting out many small games and losing money on it due to low quality on 80% of them like Squeenix I guess you can see why some are weary of that of they don't know anything about games.

I'm glad SEGA seems to be going AA-pilled and focusing on many IPs with decent budgets, especially after the Hyenas failure. If Capcom could follow suit and stop sucking off 3 IPs nonstop we could really be on the right path.

We’ll likely see a split between GaaS shit that gets milked for years on end/is on a yearly treadmill on one side, and indies on the other. The ones going the way of the dodo are AAA “cinematic experiences” because they’re in the awkward spot of being too overpriced for what you get, while also not being able to milk the paypigs to cover the time until the next release. I think Naughty Dog sees the writing on the wall, if their remasters and attempts to break into tv/film are any indication,

Larian made Divinity Original Sin as a small team, on a small budget.
The same team bloated itself, expanded on 3 continents, filled up with interns and mercenaries, took loans and sold assets for money, and produced Baldur's Gate 3.

The second product is superior to the first. The extra money paid off.

This was going to happen at some point, Frankly, the lockdowns had a lot of over hiring due to vidya getting bigger than it ever was before, then the normalgays left right afterwards but they only stuck to moble gaming, not console. This has lead to most companies in the industry to highly scale back operations, and most were not expecting that vidya on consoles peaked already. Eventually it will lead to everyone fired leaving the industry, or going into Indie or AA games, AI will force more out and into Indie than AA.

This is just an exaggeration of the natural business cycle of boom and bust. It's so large because the live service bubble is bursting and the AAA blockbuster game bubble is coming up later this decade. Nearly every company bloated too hard and too fast chasing the profitability of games and now people are losing jobs by the thousands over it. When people keep saying another crash is coming, this is how it manifests. The monster will keep moving but it's shed its skin. I genuinely believe it will get better but first it will get even worse for another couple years because corporations in this space take a long time to pivot.

Suicide Squad will be remembered as a major landmark in the death of the live service boom.

The money doesn't matter. Line must go up. If you look at corporations outside of just vidya, you'll see this all the time. Corporation makes so much money it sets a new record for itself, and within weeks or months it fires tons of people. Why do that when the company is doing well and can afford paying salaries? Line must go up. It dates back to when the US government (paid off by corporate interests as always) ruled that Henry Ford was in the wrong and in fact in violation of federal law by prioritizing employee benefits for his workers over chasing endlessly increasing profits.

EGS is a marketing strategy for investment funds, to signal to leftiest that they are "one of the good ones" capitalists and defend themselves from red outrage. It has frick all to do with video games. Your favorite game has a black woman in it, because it has a black woman on the design team, or someone who is dating a black woman, or just someone who wants to themselves virtue signal. Because they forgot to make good games and made wokeism/CRT/troonphilia with a message instead. Blacks make up 14% of the total pop, troons make up probably 0.2% if that, and the number of black women that play videogames is probably fewer than 2 million country-wide with maybe half that in the sphere that plays anything like FPS, RPG, or fighting. In other words, you're making products that you think will make people that don't play videogames happy instead of games that people that play videogames will want to play.

The honest answer is the standard of living for employees in those studios are quite high. California developers pay a lot to live there and Sony pays the employees a lot. That's it really.

The less credible answer is Sony paid Sweet Baby Inc and other consultants for suggesting things to fix in the game besides the script. All that accessibility spam in the Options menu, didn't grow on its own. Whatever you go with, these guys reuse the same Spiderman PS4 engine and released a less ambitious game than GTA5 on PS3/X360 base hardware a decade ago.

Also there's that whole prejudice of artists being nothing but fart-sniffing commies, anarchists and every other flavour of liberal or gays that dissuades most people considering creative roles. Same with cooking, an essential skill that no man can survive without, out in the wide world being relegate exclusively to women because some old fart said so.

They are doing hackneyed surface level diversity because it's good for marketing and investors, and hiring so many people to make huge games to print money forever on top of that, only for it to be shown that only like 2-3 megahits can coexist at a time and now they're cutting the MANY redundancies that they created in that growth period. Everything you're talking about is a symptom, not the disease itself.

Western comics are pretty much just Marvel, DC, and licensed properties these days and the oversaturation of capes in other media that didn't even funnel people to comics at their height has lead to everything on shelves looking stale. There's also the format of various creators on one series like a revolving door. Manga is new series after new series, pretty much always handled by 1 or 2 creators with assistants the entire run, giving more relative freedom with characters, settings, and style. Indie comics still exist but they don't have the platform manga does since right now anime and Manga are "in".

          >recent trends include inserting real world politics, identity politics, and allegories for real world politics (strawmanified of course) into fantasy escapist material

          Then with manga, you've got
          >new stories and characters constantly, even if many, many of them are just variations on a theme (hero's journey with protagonist getting stronger and fighting even stronger opponents, isekai, isekai but now it's slice of life, isekai but now it's catered to females, isekai but now it's our earth that's the new world for the mc, isekai with videogame mechanics, etc.)
          >series that end up canceled at least are given a chance
          >it's not just different writers and studios making repetitive variations of dragonball and one piece
          >wide range of genres to choose from
          >even manga made for younger japanese audiences have more mature content than non-porn adult comics in the US
          >escape the tedium of japanese school or salaryman life by reading about young girls creating a rock band, teenage heroes slaying dragons and demons, the son of a tofu shop owner becoming one of the top downhill racers ever known while using a modified hatchback, a salaryman like yourself being reborn in a high fantasy world and becoming a powerful hero skilled with blades and magic and attracting the most wonderful of ladies

          >Why has the American comics industry been withering for a decade while Japanese manga is selling better than ever?
Because manga has several things going for it.

          >widely available
Shit in the US, by comparison, you'll pretty much never find outside of a comic shop.

          >cheap
You can get like a 500 page mag for about 5 bucks, which contains several ongoing series for you to read. Meanwhile 5 bucks in the US will buy you about 20 pages, of which 6 will be ad's.

          >stories are consistent, art is consistent
Unlike the US, where stories and art are a revolving door. Who is writing the next issue? Who the frick knows. Artist? Nah, he fricked off to go draw Super Dog for the next 4 issues.
Also to go along with this, writers often take any chance they get to frick everything up and retcon everything. Doubly worse when the suits agree with shit decisions. One More Day ruined Spider-Man and it's been kept in place because the morons at the top literally don't think you can write stories about married adult Peter.

How has manga been perceived in Japan for the last 30 years or so? When I grew up reading comics were ultra nerd shit and videogames were slightly less nerd shit.

God forbid you played a card game at the lunch table.

Manga on a whole has been the equivalent of newspaper comics for almost 50 years in Japan, if you compare it to Western comics and the marvel cinematic sodium-laden bean extract universe it's basically the inverse, where anime is an intentionally niche product meant to advertise volume sales while manga is something you pick up a magazine on the way to work and read on the train

        >They are doing hackneyed surface level diversity
surface level would imply it's just lip service. modern vidya are rotten to the core, complete with homosexual mary sues, trannies being presented as beautiful, and ugly man-faced indapundint women who dun nid no men. and it's not just character designs, suits just HAD to make narratives revolve around homosexual struggles too (accept homosexuals or ur a heccin biggot, wypipo bad, etc.).
        >hiring so many people to make huge games to print money forever
what money? they're not selling. hell, western poz is so bad a single nip manga outsold the entire comics industry. that's how bad the situation is.

It's nothing more than market correction. Too many investors wasted money enabling people who had products nobody wanted, broke even by spending an astonishing amount of money on marketing, and then backed out when they realized that they were, in fact, investing in something nobody wanted.
