There's nothing good about the game, shitty corridor 90% of the game, shitty enemies that literally tell you they are behind you and about to attack you, shitty QTEs and shitty bosses, the only boss I liked was the giant everything else was forgettable even that military guy near the end.

I don't remember any praise whatsoever when the game came out. Only laughable controls on PC and real fans reeeing about it being a departure from the series' roots. My friends played things like DMC and Dynasty Warrior, so I couldn't get any first-hand reviews.
Every gaming magazine called it great and was praised as one of the greatest of time.

When RE4 was released on PC, one of my classmates got the game, because no one else cared about it. Few days later, all of my classmates who gave a fuck about vidya were going to his place to play it or at least borrow the disc. Needless to say they were salivating all over it. And since I was going through the contrarian kid phase (I wish you luck with that btw), I was only one not playing it.
They were also playing it on his gamepad, despite all being hardcore pckeks who need no gamepad ever.
RE4 was era defining because it helped along the transition to over the shoulder third person shooters. Both from a gameplay point, with it's level design as well, and from a technical perspective.
It absolutely was released in an era full of garbage, because the majority of console shooters were garbage. Remember that the period saw the death of tank controls and finally started using analog sticks for aiming. RE4 wasn't the first to use that, but it was one of the first to do it really well.
And the remake took away QTEs because they were only put in during narrative sequences where a special action you don't normally do, was used. They should have been cinematics and people rightly knew that QTEs weren't what they wanted. They wanted a clear divide between story events and gameplay. And they were right to want that.
RE also hasn't death spiralled.

It has nothing to do with it being a "masterpiece". It came out on like six different platforms across two console generations. The came is core nostalgia for most of Ganker and the inner man child doesn't want others to feel fun for a remake.
