I thinkt that's a fairly common phobia. It's a whole lotta vastness, nearly bottomlessness that you can't see well and is full of creatures that THRIVE in it.
I'm moreso made uncomfortable by low-res, low-poly, endless oceans like in n64, psx and ps2 games. Something about their lower quality compared to a modern game makes them seem more dangerous. Like you could just start clipping into anything or fall into a dev room full of weird shit. I don't know if many other people have that specific aversion that I do. Just something off about it.
I don't know to explain it but Mario 64 just feels special and strange like this guy
Mario 64 was just made differently, there will never be any other game like it ever again. It just happened.
One of the games with probably the most documented beta and source code and yet so many mysteries remain.
Just look at the screebshot, why did Nintendo put a ghost ship in the sky that gets more invisible the closer you get to it? I have no idea and we may never know, Shiggy is taking all the answers to the grave

there is a remnant of a ship that was being used in some part of development and was not used. you cannot translate that to finished concepts as you have no idea what it was being used for or tested for, and these types of things are extremely commonly left in games, and always have been, which you'd know if you actually knew anything about video games.

to this day i still have dreams (not everyday) about finding a new secret area in the game even if i havent played the game in months or years, i dont know why but this game is ingrained my mind
I finished this game last night for the first time, holy shit zoomers really overblow the hidden aspects when both the signs and the Toads TELL YOU about all of the weird shit happening.
I think a lot of kids straight up didn't read the manual and didn't bother to check any of the in-game text when they first played SM64. The fact that one of the first signs states that you need to master movement before anything else was pretty kino, it made me realize that Nintendo was hinging everything in the game on how good Mario felt to control, so they just did whatever the fuck they wanted for the rest.
People really do. However, I totally missed Snowman's Land as a kid the first time I beat it. I asked my friend what was that level during the credits and he was confused how I missed it. I thought the mirror room was just a cool room to play around in and look at Lakitu.
Also I missed a few hidden 1-ups like pic related
It's director Koizumi is a freemason
I'd like to chalk that up to they just took the visuals from that place and used them. That is pretty crazy though.
I also missed that level too as a kid. I miss the days of endings having rollcalls, revealing stuff that could be missed. Super Mario World did that shit to me since I missed a ton of shit my first time.
Wait, am I retarded, or isn't the floating airship just meant to be the one from Rainbow Ride later on? I mean in the context of the game's lore it makes sense, it disappears when you go up to it because you likely don't have enough power stars yet to even be in that section of the game.
You literally fall down from the top floor of the castle into where Jolly Roger Bay was, so it's not impossible the locations match up to pic related.
I remember a couple of glitches in OOT that required you to gently hit the cartridge from a side to get it to unplug from one of the pins. You could use it to clear the gap in the Shadow Temple without the longshot.
I pulled it off a few times and eventually nuked my save file.
When I was like 14 I replayed mario 64 for the 1000th time and realized if you spin bowser for long enough then let him go mario says "around the mountain!" instead of "so long gay bowser!", and I thought it was a cute easter egg that I'd never come across before
then I looked 13 years later and apparently this never existed. maybe this game is personalized brehs
it's only mysterious and cryptic if players actually assign any meaning to it
same could be said about anything in any game, that's how playground rumors were invented
I think sm64DS also added to the whole mario 64 rumors stuff since that was literally the appeal of the game with all the secret stars and extra characters.
>playing mario 64 >mario noclips through ceiling >ends up in a white void >giant skeletal mass calling itself "God" tells mario "you shouldn't be here" >he begins attacking mario >every time mario hits "God" he gets teleported away and loses some of his own health >when mario deals the final blow he also loses his last bit of health and dies too >giant mario head appears and is now floating alone in the void >blank stare at camera >mario is now God >but at what cost?
Also the bob-omb battlefield music is playing in the background the whole time
I think that romhack is actually based off an arg (think it was called sm64 declassified. I know it was by greenio). So cringe sm64 creepypasta stuff actually turned into a decent fan project for once. (also I love that romhack as I love yume nikki style stuff)
The reason why Mario 64 is so surreal looking has a lot to do with the lack of rendering optimizations. The textures have no mip-mapping, textures that are far away are just the same resolution as ones up close. Not long after this devs started optimizing their 3D games so there aren't many other games with this look. I think it looks fucking awesome personally, it really makes you feel like you're in another world.
It's usually pretty obvious, you can see a line where the texture goes blurry. In Mario 64 it's much more of a raw unoptimized rendering, which is typically a bad idea in 3D games but in this case it made for a very dream-like surreal look to the world.
Since fucking when? I've played this game countless times, I refuse to believe this shit
I remember the monkey making noises, but I don't remember those kind of noises. Maybe I'm mixing up DK64, but I remember the monkeys sound being more agressive sounding. SM64 is weird
Your memory is correct, listen to the whole clip. The monkey makes a wide range of noises including the ones you described. Likely the same sound bank that Donkey Kong 64 uses
Its actually in the middle. There are specific sounds tied to directly to the monkeys, but the stage also has location triggers that cause the sound to play when you are far away from the monkey at the top. If you were to kill the monkeys without the location trigger, then the noise will still occur as you reclimb TTM
Is that early 3D charm of making the most with the limitations. imagine painting a landscape but you don't have green or white, you would end up mixing up the blue and yellow giving you a not quite factory perfect green and the clouds would need to be blank spaces left on the canvas. It would look weird even if you are a good painter.
Now imagine that but with earl 3D software models and memory limitations. Pic related body isn't even a 3d Render, digitized sprite of a 3D sphere.
>Pic related body isn't even a 3d Render, digitized sprite of a 3D sphere.
It's a sprite of a 3d render. "Digitized" means nothing in this context because the source was digital. It is a render. (a render is something pre-rendered, not in realtime)
if we are having a technical discussion about mip mapping and shit i want to use correct terminology. i was around and doing these things at this time (3d studio 3 DOS 1994)
but yes i knew what you meant.
SM RPG is kind of a unique case because some of those, for instance the one you posted, are skillfully slightly redawn over the render. the best of both worlds combining efficiency with sprite artistry. them were the days.
redrawing over the render? just the skill required. they have to both downsize the original renders (without the benefit of techniques such as bicubic or lanczos resizing probably) and then reduce the amount of colors from 65,000 to 256
this alone distorts the original image significantly and causes you to have to redraw it already.
this is very obvious in donkey kong country, where the sprites look like shit because they were not skillfully redrawn, just downsized and somewhat brutally converted to indexed color

you could just draw those you dont even need to prerender that though
Because it was a time where videogames didn’t have a set formula and tech allowed you to make whatever you want. It was a time where devs took inspiration from other shit and brought it to life. Today, devs are inspired from other videogames and and thus the creative process is now highly incestous.
Yeah, it was the wild west and people where figuring it out, now a days there are standars which are welcome but that old feeling of anything being possible is lost.
I will say, even though ive been learning about game development since the 1980s, that super mario 64 is an oddly singular game
there is just somehow no other game that resembles it, for instance they somehow got 3d platforming "Right" and then everyone else struggled with it for like 20 years? even nintendo couldn't make another game as good. it's really weird, like it has this definite unique quality to it.
especially for those of us who remember SGI renders of super high res black metal mario from like 1995
Mario 64 is the last, "grab and play it" 3D mario they ever made, every other Mario game after this had to grab your and and give you a tutorial or play the story before letting you play for real.
I think another factor is the Nintendo 64 sound font, it gives a weird "refreshing" feel to the game.
There used to be a shit ton of threads for it when it was popular, b.7, b.9 and 1.0 each had their own threads. You can just play the game and post them here
i'm not really interested in playing the mod, i don't like mario 64 enough to really do that. i just like the fever dream aesthetic of it. it's always been a fascination of mine to look into fever dreamy games
I think I've heard of a romhack like that before... that puts the DS content into a hacked SM64 rom. Can't remember the name, but it might be out there somewhere.
i cant believe how retarded the controls are in that game, hold y to run? it should've been the other way around: you run by default and hold y to walk. such a good remake completely ruined by the controls
>Reach the Bowser door upstairs >bowser_laugh.mp3 >Make up some retarded thought that it was Bowser's 2 guard dogs barking behind the door and you couldn't kill them
im still afraid of the deep sea because of that damn eel

The reason why Mario 64 is so surreal looking has a lot to do with the lack of rendering optimizations. Yes but take a look at Mario 64. No mip-mapping.
Idk if I could even tell if OOT has it or not just by looking. We probably need to ask an expert.

>parallel universes, half A press
N64 does support mip mapping
What did he do to deserve solitary confinement??
Because it was a time where videogames didn’t have a set formula and tech allowed you to make whatever you want. It was a time where devs took inspiration from other shit and brought it to life. Today, devs are inspired from other videogames and and thus the creative process is now highly incestous.
Yeah, it was the wild west and people where figuring it out, now a days there are standars which are welcome but that old feeling of anything being possible is lost.
>Flat screen CRT
Soulless.
Some things feel really meaningful because it reminds me of reality.
i guess on a related note, do you guys know where this screenshot is from? i really like the dream-like vibe
b3313 romhack, make sure to play the unabandoned version
thanks. is there a place people post their screenshots? looks pretty cool
>I don't like mario 64
Why should that matter? it's an entirely different game.
the gameplay is the same
Thats from the Mario liminal space mod, whatever the name is.
More importantly, how do I set the emulator up to look like that?
Use Retroarch and try the filters given there
you aren't ready for parallel universes.
I just want Super Mario 64 DS.....64
Download a rom and patch the controllers to analog movement.
I want it the other way around. I want Mario 64 with the DS content patched in.
Post your first memory with the game.
>Reach the Bowser door upstairs
>bowser_laugh.mp3
>Make up some retarded thought that it was Bowser's 2 guard dogs barking behind the door and you couldn't kill them
