I don’t know what it is but I either fuck the timing up at the first one or I hit around 20-30. Maybe it’s the emulator though. It also depends on the enemy and location, for some reason it’s a lot easier for me if I pay attention to Mario’s shadow in areas where he has one.
Best I've done is 27, around that point it's nigh impossible to nail. Either we got old and reflexes aren't the same or the emulator/60fps/non CRT refresh are fucking with us.
The game was built with four way movement in mind, but you can now move normally in all directions, making things extremely awkward to navigate. Also the timings in battle just feel off.

Special Attack value is used in damage formula for ALL specials.
his highest innate stat is Attack. just make him an attack specialist for single target annoying enemy mobs. that's the best value you can get out of him.
He's also tanky, so he's good for that type of annoying trash you wanna kill ASAp out of mobs.
Mallow is Special attack aoe sweep specialist and will 95% of the time be better to use for trash
Mario/Geno/Peach is best and endgame yes.
Remember you can SWITCH on demand party members now. So just make Bowser a glass cannon attack only character and Mallow a special attack glass cannon only and once they do their jobs revert back to Geno/Peach.
when you level up, due to diminishing returns, specializing is not worth it
Go for whatever gives most stats (add and compare)
when you have equal gains, remember what stats each party member rather have
Bowser = Attack
Mallow/Peach= S. Attack
Geno/Mario = Either.
If you have to choose, Special is better for mario (Super Jump is more Damage per turn) and Attack is better for Geno (save flower points for heals/buffs).
I would argue if the stat difference is only of 1 you should still go for the stat of choice respectively.
then again it also depends which -1 stat you get. for instance, -1 on special defense is whatever because she gets lazy shell eventually. but -1 on special attack you will choose the other.
Or for example bowser if he gets the same attack value on an encore for attack/defense except Defense. he's already beefy and he wants to maximize his attack, so picking attack might be better than picking a generic 3hp once in a while when he's already innate high HP.

It might be good going for the special A/D option if the bonus on Special D is huge every 4-5 levels or so to "cash in" on the stored bonus from not picking that option.
However when the Diminishing return and bonus are equal, you want to opt for Attack/Defense because its his 1st and 3rd stat prio.

it's ok to get specials in lvl up for bowser just for Special D alone. It's his weakness you have to cover up. It has terrible growth so a fixed stat increase REALLY helps.
I would say when equal, chosoe attack defense
when DR'd once, choose Specials
when both a/d and s. a/d are DR'd, choose attack/defense again IF only defense is low
When both are DR'd choose Specials again IF only special attack is low.
When you have TWO DR'd, choose HP to reset.
and so forth. Just remember each character's stat priority and work around that.

For mario it's easy. just choose max stat growth every single pick. Just remember it's simple addition and HP is only 1 value vs 2 on other choices, so as you said, HP should be the DR reset only. Usually at that point the HP choice has a bonus for not being chosen so it's beefy too.

If you know you're gonna Lazy shell peach
remember Lazy shell lowers your speed by 50 and lowers your special attack
however it doesn't affect the healing value of her healing spells. She becomes a heal spammer and that's it. but that's fine. that's her role, albeit straightforward.
Special A is still used in the formula and it is not lowered by lazy shell for Group Hug or Therapy or the raise/rezz spell.
Meaning, her accessory should be something that gives her speed to compensate. Priorities remain the same.
S. attack > defense > HP >special D > attack
even with lazy shell peach's speciall attack will be so high she will hit as hard as mallow, even with the lazy shell weighing her down.
That's how OP peach is. Just make sure to cash in on bonus hp growths and bonus defense growths.

Speed is the most important stat in the whole game and cannot be raised by bonus growths. only few equipment like accessories and normal level ups.
Pretty sure every single character wants to prioritize Speed to combat the double turn bosses get and lowering it to 1. that's the "soft cap" which will be met as long as your p. members have one speed increasing accessory, although IDK if they are unique-equipped or multiples/accessible. it's been awhile. the game doesn't tell you turn order, but with enough speed you can cuck boss's double turn which is the ONLY way the game can have a win condition, that's how easy this game is.

you can't block the double turn. It's a one turn which is scripted to attack twice.

Speed doesn't matter much besides turn order. Speed is good for Geno so he should always be the most agile (Geno boost off the bat). The only important thing about speed is that Geno takes his turn before others for bosses/postgame bosses/endgame. it's GOOd that peach has low speed, it means her turn happens after damage and not before so she can heal. hence lazy shell is so good on her.
Speed should be Geno > mario > peach in number. Ideally geno and mario faster than the boss.
so
Geno > mario > boss > peach
for the other two, mallow should also be faster than TRASH for sweep.
Bowser is trash in this game, or at least original, because he has low speed, so he would always attack last and that means he ate a status effect and is now useless or forced to use an item to remove it or attack while in fear or in a CC.
Speed is not a stat priority, jsut an entirely separate stat that matters regarding your party turns. just make sure Geno is speedy and you should be set.

I refuse to play the game because I have a policy against remake/remaster its just the same to me I don't care about graphic but man im jamming so hard listening to the remake ost.
Also if they did add new stuff like that it would just be like the chrono trigger DS remake that padded the game with useless fluff. It would not be seamlessly integrated into the main game.
I've played a variety of romhacks that did a good job expanding Mario RPG, so it can't be that hard. Personal favorite is Revolution, since it revamps enough to be fresh, but not so much that it becomes an autism fest like Armageddon.
The new dungeons give you new weapons that exceed the old ones or in the case of Frog aren't tied to story progression so you don't need to swap out again. Also a compendium. Arena of the Ages could have been designed better though considering this was after the Squaresoft and Enix merger.
FYI the developers for the SMRPG remake also did the remakes of Dragon Quest 4/5/6 on DS.
They put a substantial amount of new content into the games, like DQ4 got an entirely new post game chapter with a redemption arc, new party member, new final boss. Shit was good.
I just want Yoko to make a new soundtrack man. Even KH3 barely used her. New mario game or something else i don't care just stop making this woman remake her old works
Maybe AlphaDream and M&L dying was the lesson and motivation Nintendo and even Intelligent Systems needed so they could return Paper Mario to its true roots.

Bingo, just add more continents to this world, it's not really that hard. Just add a new continent with a lot of new lands/regions/islands/etc. for each game in a series.
And let us dip into nostalgia by visiting this original land every so often (maybe you get an airship or some flying/sailing method that can bring you back here in later games).
Not gonna lie, if Super Mario RPG actually gets proper sequels I hope we'll continue to get superbosses that wouldn't look out of place in Final Fantasy.
I don't think that will ever be an area that would be the main part of a game, more of a "you get warped to a strange dimension" kind of sidepath.
I feel like they should just add more continents to this current world of SM RPG. Feels like this is just one tiny part of the world and they can build a line of sequels just adding continents to explore for Mario and co.
I just think the idea of this super serious FF like world and then mario comes in and wahoo's and deflates all tension is extremely funny on top of getting rad monsters to fight

If you're disabling emulated console VSync, using Nvidia control panel to cap Ryujinx to your display's frame rates by turning vertical sync on may help.
Although in the case of Super Mario Wonder it can still run too fast if you do this.
The Super Jump timing window is reportedly the same length as regular timed hits (7 frames) compared to the original 3 frames, but is slightly earlier. Take that into consideration if you're struggling.

The new limit break thingies seem to fit in well with the spirit of the game. They may make an already easy game even easier, but with challenge being essentially a non-factor to begin with, they add a bit of variety that Hispanices it up.
Outside Japan, this was in many ways the first jRPG to go big. Even though "only 500k" sold in the US, that was actually the entire batch that was produced (previous jRPGs would just send batches of 300-350k to the US).

If you turn Bowser into attack/defense only there is use in him for enemies with low defense.
If you turn Mallow into special A/D only he becomes a good sweeper for trash, but a glass canon you won't use on bosses much without geno boost to cover for him. the increased Special attack or attack is not worth it because of diminishing returns. Just go in general for the highest stat value increase between Special A/ Attack respectively on each character and HP. sometimes the defense value is fat and is worth going for it too just because of it.

SOLO(/duo) =Toad's gift, you summon toad at 100% gauge and he gives you an assortment of buffs, or can cast rock candy. Not accessible after you get geno as far as I've tried
Mario/geno/mallow = Star Riders. Single target damage. I
Mario/bowser/geno = Shooting Star Shot All enemy attack, lower damage than other aoe triples, but buffs team.
Mario/mallow/bowser = Clown Car Barrage All enemy attack, does fire, ice, and lightning damage, my favorite move because even if they're immune to 2 and weak to 1 it categorizes the whole of the damage as their elemental weakness. I can easily hit over 1k with it.
Mario/bowser/peach = Starry Shell Spike AOE non-elemental damage. Still considered magic but I think triple moves all have some sort of armor pierce/punchthrough as they tend to be pretty strong no matter what.
Mario/Peach/Mallow = Healing Rainbow Full party full heal, also revives full team. It cures ailments on party members in waiting.
Mario/peach/geno = Spare-Us-All Gimped, but on command one attack invuln. This is basically designed for the boss refights that have super heavy hitters- but, it's kinda useless compared to red essence which is VERY easy to get here.

Most of them are just damage. Mario/Peach/Mallow is a full party heal and revive. Mario/Geno/Peach protects the party from one attack. Mario/Geno/Bowser allegedly buffs the party while attacking but I don’t know what exactly the buffs are.

Pakarry likely drew inspiration, but that's an NPC required for progression and it's in the original. If it helps, you deal with them for 5 minutes and never talk to them again unless you replay the minigame

when leveling up and choosing extra stats, select the biggest growths while considering this stat priority.
it's ok to go for specials for special defense alone.
Geno is like mario. just go for the highest stat growth. However unlike Mario, you want attack over special attack to save all FP for buffs/heals/damage dealers and be efficient. Geno is a buff bot and item user and attacks when nothing to do.

Generally go for whatever gives you the most stats. He and mario are easy to optimize.

The gameplay is extremely simple. That's not to say it's bad or it's boring, but you're not gonna find a ton of complexity or depth here. The people here talking about "ideal stat distribution" are absolutely minmaxing for no real reason, most people who played this probably dumped all their levelup bonuses into one stat, I know I sure as fuck did.
If you like JRPGs, and in particular, you liked paper mario, there's a very good chance you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of this. It's about 15-20 hours all in, even if you go slow and get lost, it's not super long or difficult to navigate.

I would much rather have a proper Black Mage than Mallow as Square/FF representation and I don't think Geno really does anything Mega Man wouldn't in an average match that isn't Timed Hits, which also sound awful in Smash's context
there have been so many Geno movesets people have come up with over the years, but I actually think something fresh would be to make Mallow part of his moveset. I think I personally landed on having his A attacks be mostly projectiles with his different weapons, and then having Mallow pop in for some taunts, his Final Smash, and also the Up Special and maybe even Down Special. It would definitely be unique and not what people would be expecting. Just imagine having to charge the Geno Flash for his Down Special but the max charge has Mallow pop out to throw a Thunderbolt on top of it?

There's an entire postgame with boss rematches, some have new moves entirely, others just have added mechanics. Belome, for instance, has a 3rd fight in which he clones FAR more frequently, and the clones offer him significant damage reduction and immunity to certain attacks, so you have to juggle beating the clones before they stack invuln on him and he just shits out his AOEs.
Culex has a rematch (Actual spoiler so don't read if you wanna see it for yourself) and he's entirely 3D modeled just like he said he would be when you fought him in the original.
At the end of the day, SMRPG Remake only happened because Squareisraelite wouldn't make any money from putting the original on NSO. So they decided to do a remake so they could charge homosexuals 60 Bucks for it.

Having some trouble with the punchinello rematch. How do I turn around the bob-ombs? I thought it was phys attacks but even when I get in 2 or 3 he always spits out 1 turned bobomb, but the first few times I fought him he would send out two at once.
The majesty of the 3D culex fight will be completely lost on every single American replaying this game since the English localization didn't bother to translate that at all for some reason.

he just instantly starts working then shits out the train after he sends the first one out. I physically cannot deal enough damage to beat him, and red essences don't last forever. What am I missing.
It does 500, but he gets his train out the first time in 4 turns.
And after that he instantly turns around ,starts working on it, then finishes it all in the same turn and I can't beat it, so he basically just spams his train and I only get one turn to try and set up again.
I had no trouble with him, but maybe I got lucky. As soon as he started building, it was Mario’s turn so he stopped instantly. Are you using Super Jump on him or not?
I fucked around a bit with my setup to just be pure damage and that did it.
Essentially what would happen is I'd kill the snifits, but any time booster would say "IM GONNA START WORKING" he'd turn around, and then before anyone else could act, he'd go "OKAY ITS DONE" and just nuke me, so I just set up mario with damage boosts and red essence and he was good to go.
Shitty fight though, I feel like there was a gimmick I missed somewhere, cause punchi had one, belome even had one.

Yeah. Punchinello rematch's gimmick is the bob-ombs will sometimes spawn backwards, and you flip them to face you or him with perfect timed attacks (the ones that splash damage all around).
Most rounds he summons, there will be 1 flipped bob-omb, so you attack the other 3 with your party, get 3 perfect attacks, he takes 320 damage, do that 5 times, wham bam thank you monstermama.

He wasn't from my understanding, by reading the original concept arts, is that this boss was supposed to be a detonator with a mobius strip. Punchnaro was supposed to be one of the guardians, which were repurposed throughout the game. The game has two members cut, the other one was a hypnotizer, I believe that's how he could command the cake in Marrymore, by controlling the people of the town. Again, cut form the game.

Booster tower, about half way up where you have to put the boosters in order. You go in and bowser sticks his cock in it's mouth and makes mario face the wall.
he gets an extra rematch fight in the postgame that makes you charge up a triple move from nil.
Basically all of postgame is a "are you sure your dumb ass knows how there are perfect guards" because pretty much every boss has instagib attacks that can only be just guarded.
He gets some fun moves though, and they look really good.
Beat smithy, you get a clear state save, then when you load it mario wakes up and "it was all a dream" and it starts a new thread of sidequests to get the super gear for the characters that don't have it, and some extra accessories while you refight old bosses with gimmicks.
I'm a little disappointed they did fuck-all to lengthen the game some, even if it was some post-game locations/unlocks besides Culex. Super Mario RPG isn't exactly long.

I don’t know what it is but I either fuck the timing up at the first one or I hit around 20-30. Maybe it’s the emulator though. It also depends on the enemy and location, for some reason it’s a lot easier for me if I pay attention to Mario’s shadow in areas where he has one.
Best I've done is 27, around that point it's nigh impossible to nail. Either we got old and reflexes aren't the same or the emulator/60fps/non CRT refresh are fucking with us.

Did they make Bowser suck less? Can't remove Mario, Peach as healer and late game heavy hitter, Geno for bosses, Mallow for trash...Bowser was useless outside of the 10 minutes after you get him.

his highest innate stat is Attack. just make him an attack specialist for single target annoying enemy mobs. that's the best value you can get out of him.
He's also tanky, so he's good for that type of annoying trash you wanna kill ASAp out of mobs.
Mallow is Special attack aoe sweep specialist and will 95% of the time be better to use for trash
Mario/Geno/Peach is best and endgame yes.
Remember you can SWITCH on demand party members now. So just make Bowser a glass cannon attack only character and Mallow a special attack glass cannon only and once they do their jobs revert back to Geno/Peach.

it's ok to get specials in lvl up for bowser just for Special D alone. It's his weakness you have to cover up. It has terrible growth so a fixed stat increase REALLY helps.
I would say when equal, chosoe attack defense
when DR'd once, choose Specials
when both a/d and s. a/d are DR'd, choose attack/defense again IF only defense is low
When both are DR'd choose Specials again IF only special attack is low.
When you have TWO DR'd, choose HP to reset.
and so forth. Just remember each character's stat priority and work around that.
For mario it's easy. just choose max stat growth every single pick. Just remember it's simple addition and HP is only 1 value vs 2 on other choices, so as you said, HP should be the DR reset only. Usually at that point the HP choice has a bonus for not being chosen so it's beefy too.

She has innate high special D. but not defense. Defense stays important to still build because even with lazy shell sometimes enemies end game can still 30/40 damage. HP at that point, if equal in stats, is more important than special D.
However because Special D is tied to Special Attack you will choose it in the case of equal stats. I would go for HP over Special attack to be defense since usually most of Peach's turns will be Healing the party anyway.
of course only if Group Hug is topping the Party. otherwise yeah get enough to reach to that point. which will probably be level cap anyway so youre going special attack the full game at that point to reach that level.

You will have high Special D from picking special attack and her innate growth. Lazy shell covers her weakness defense, and for good measure you still get Defense points if there's a bonus for not picking attack/defense. In the case where HP has a big bonus for not picking it, just pick HP.
Honestly you can just level her up with whatever highest stat growth you see just like mario and geno and she'll end up fine. she needs the three (defense, hp, special attack). Her special attack is also innately high. Lazy shell trivializes the game.

Meaning, her accessory should be something that gives her speed to compensate. Priorities remain the same.

even with lazy shell peach's speciall attack will be so high she will hit as hard as mallow, even with the lazy shell weighing her down.
That's how OP peach is. Just make sure to cash in on bonus hp growths and bonus defense growths.

Speed is the most important stat in the whole game and cannot be raised by bonus growths. only few equipment like accessories and normal level ups.
Pretty sure every single character wants to prioritize Speed to combat the double turn bosses get and lowering it to 1. that's the "soft cap" which will be met as long as your p. members have one speed increasing accessory, although IDK if they are unique-equipped or multiples/accessible. it's been awhile. the game doesn't tell you turn order, but with enough speed you can cuck boss's double turn which is the ONLY way the game can have a win condition, that's how easy this game is.
you can't block the double turn. It's a one turn which is scripted to attack twice.

Speed doesn't matter much besides turn order. Speed is good for Geno so he should always be the most agile (Geno boost off the bat). The only important thing about speed is that Geno takes his turn before others for bosses/postgame bosses/endgame. it's GOOd that peach has low speed, it means her turn happens after damage and not before so she can heal. hence lazy shell is so good on her.
Speed should be Geno > mario > peach in number. Ideally geno and mario faster than the boss.
so
Geno > mario > boss > peach
for the other two, mallow should also be faster than TRASH for sweep.
Bowser is trash in this game, or at least original, because he has low speed, so he would always attack last and that means he ate a status effect and is now useless or forced to use an item to remove it or attack while in fear or in a CC.
Speed is not a stat priority, jsut an entirely separate stat that matters regarding your party turns. just make sure Geno is speedy and you should be set.
so basically
1.- make sure Geno is speedy for buff before engage
2.- if you wanna use bowser because you like him or whatever, make sure to increase his speed somehow with gear.
3.- Geno > party member > enemies > peach is ideal. Lazy shell makes you immune to status effects so peach will never be CC'd.

I've played a variety of romhacks that did a good job expanding Mario RPG, so it can't be that hard. Personal favorite is Revolution, since it revamps enough to be fresh, but not so much that it becomes an autism fest like Armageddon.
The new dungeons give you new weapons that exceed the old ones or in the case of Frog aren't tied to story progression so you don't need to swap out again. Also a compendium. Arena of the Ages could have been designed better though considering this was after the Squaresoft and Enix merger.
FYI the developers for the SMRPG remake also did the remakes of Dragon Quest 4/5/6 on DS.
They put a substantial amount of new content into the games, like DQ4 got an entirely new post game chapter with a redemption arc, new party member, new final boss. Shit was good.

Nintendo needs another RPG series for Mario now that AlphaDream is bankrupt (M&L is gone).
Square needs SM RPG as a series to bring kids over to their other jRPGs.
More SM RPGs is the ultimate win win, especially when this remake already handled the cost of modernizing all the assets.
I feel like it's extremely likely that we see a sequel announced on the next Switch.
Maybe AlphaDream and M&L dying was the lesson and motivation Nintendo and even Intelligent Systems needed so they could return Paper Mario to its true roots.

I don't think that will ever be an area that would be the main part of a game, more of a "you get warped to a strange dimension" kind of sidepath.
I feel like they should just add more continents to this current world of SM RPG. Feels like this is just one tiny part of the world and they can build a line of sequels just adding continents to explore for Mario and co.

If you're disabling emulated console VSync, using Nvidia control panel to cap Ryujinx to your display's frame rates by turning vertical sync on may help.
Although in the case of Super Mario Wonder it can still run too fast if you do this.
The Super Jump timing window is reportedly the same length as regular timed hits (7 frames) compared to the original 3 frames, but is slightly earlier. Take that into consideration if you're struggling.

The new limit break thingies seem to fit in well with the spirit of the game. They may make an already easy game even easier, but with challenge being essentially a non-factor to begin with, they add a bit of variety that Hispanices it up.
I like it. You will be using them for boss rematches and Culex fights anyway.

Just like Mario. Go for the highest stat increase value. He's a buff bot/item user and will attack accordingly depending on mob. usually Geno whirl spam for single target but depending on the moment in the game normal attack is more efficient/more damage.
If you turn Bowser into attack/defense only there is use in him for enemies with low defense.
If you turn Mallow into special A/D only he becomes a good sweeper for trash, but a glass canon you won't use on bosses much without geno boost to cover for him. the increased Special attack or attack is not worth it because of diminishing returns. Just go in general for the highest stat value increase between Special A/ Attack respectively on each character and HP. sometimes the defense value is fat and is worth going for it too just because of it.

SOLO(/duo) =Toad's gift, you summon toad at 100% gauge and he gives you an assortment of buffs, or can cast rock candy. Not accessible after you get geno as far as I've tried
Mario/geno/mallow = Star Riders. Single target damage. I
Mario/bowser/geno = Shooting Star Shot All enemy attack, lower damage than other aoe triples, but buffs team.
Mario/mallow/bowser = Clown Car Barrage All enemy attack, does fire, ice, and lightning damage, my favorite move because even if they're immune to 2 and weak to 1 it categorizes the whole of the damage as their elemental weakness. I can easily hit over 1k with it.
Mario/bowser/peach = Starry Shell Spike AOE non-elemental damage. Still considered magic but I think triple moves all have some sort of armor pierce/punchthrough as they tend to be pretty strong no matter what.
Mario/Peach/Mallow = Healing Rainbow Full party full heal, also revives full team. It cures ailments on party members in waiting.
Mario/peach/geno = Spare-Us-All Gimped, but on command one attack invuln. This is basically designed for the boss refights that have super heavy hitters- but, it's kinda useless compared to red essence which is VERY easy to get here.

Yup, honestly I had better efficiency with just my regular specials and moves most of the time, so I'd save up triple for either bosses, or 4-5 monster enemy groupings so I could just shit on them and get on my way.
I'm also grinding out the bestiary like a tard though so you may differ.

Most of them are just damage. Mario/Peach/Mallow is a full party heal and revive. Mario/Geno/Peach protects the party from one attack. Mario/Geno/Bowser allegedly buffs the party while attacking but I don’t know what exactly the buffs are.

Pakarry likely drew inspiration, but that's an NPC required for progression and it's in the original. If it helps, you deal with them for 5 minutes and never talk to them again unless you replay the minigame

There isn't really anything to talk about, it's pretty much a 1:1 remake.

Bowser is Attack > special defense > defense > HP > special attack
when leveling up and choosing extra stats, select the biggest growths while considering this stat priority.
it's ok to go for specials for special defense alone.
Geno is like mario. just go for the highest stat growth. However unlike Mario, you want attack over special attack to save all FP for buffs/heals/damage dealers and be efficient. Geno is a buff bot and item user and attacks when nothing to do.
Defense = Special Defense > Attack = HP > Special Attack
Generally go for whatever gives you the most stats. He and mario are easy to optimize.

Special Defense is his weakness you have to cover it.
He has innate high HP and Defense, so you don't worry about these much.
Special attack is useless
consider tagging him out if you can't one-shot magical-based enemies and you're underleveled or need to sweep. Bowser is best when there's 1 strong enemy or few enemies but theyre semi strong. He can remove problematic enemies quickly from the enemy group with his high attack.
Bowser is at his weakest when its a horde/swarm of enemies, specifically magical based or status ailment spammers. He can't sweep and he's weak to magic.
Bowser is not weak to ailments, but if just by the way he works he is really cucked by them because he's a one trick pony of strong attack spam.
If he gets turned into scarecrow he's useless
If he gets Feared he really gets cucked by it
so besides the other CC in the game like mushroom or sleep, he also has now +2 other CCs that basically fuck him over unlike the rest of the cast.
best you can do is make sure teamates remove cc with items and that he has enough speed to 1 shot enemies before they attack/crowd control.

but also remember BOWSER HAS LOW SPEED so you need to equip gear that gives him speed so he attacks BEFORE the enemy to remove the threats.
make sure Geno is speedy and has the first turn to buff before mario and bowser attack.
if it comes down to trash sweep, i would consider just using mallow and either geno or bowser.

Is this game particularly good if you don’t have nostalgia for it? The soundtrack seems good and it looks charming, but what about the rest?
It’s preddy güd. It won’t be the greatest game you’ve ever played but will be an enjoyable 12 hours of play time.
The gameplay is extremely simple. That's not to say it's bad or it's boring, but you're not gonna find a ton of complexity or depth here. The people here talking about "ideal stat distribution" are absolutely minmaxing for no real reason, most people who played this probably dumped all their levelup bonuses into one stat, I know I sure as fuck did.
If you like JRPGs, and in particular, you liked paper mario, there's a very good chance you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of this. It's about 15-20 hours all in, even if you go slow and get lost, it's not super long or difficult to navigate.

I never tried it in the original, but didn't the power of the basic Jump special increase every time you used it? Does that still work?
yes. but only with an item that you have to do a sidequest to get. It's an accessory that increases jump damage the more you use it.
However Jump is still just Jump. Super Jump blows it out of the water, even if you have jump badge equipped. Meaning, it's a waste of an accessory slot and pointless after early game.
I'll probably get it, but only because I don't have the original game anymore, but I really do hate the idea of doing near 1:1 remakes and selling them for full price like with Link's Awakening.

Yes, I would. Geno would be really fun in Smash and I want Mallow to be used too.
there have been so many Geno movesets people have come up with over the years, but I actually think something fresh would be to make Mallow part of his moveset. I think I personally landed on having his A attacks be mostly projectiles with his different weapons, and then having Mallow pop in for some taunts, his Final Smash, and also the Up Special and maybe even Down Special. It would definitely be unique and not what people would be expecting. Just imagine having to charge the Geno Flash for his Down Special but the max charge has Mallow pop out to throw a Thunderbolt on top of it?
That would honestly be the best idea. It feels weird to have Geno without Mallow, since they're advertised now as the two SMRPG characters

Final Smash: Star Rain (Geno turns into the cannon as Mallow powers up, jumps in, and gets shot towards the center of the screen in a burst of expanding light. stars rain down a la PK Starstorm while the light explosion also deals damage but no knockback)
And then all of their taunts, victory dances, and whatever else would use the two in tandem. It would be fucking perfect

Have Mallow help Geno pummel with his froggy stick, show up as an up smash using a small Shocker, and have Mallow bury opponents with Star Rain while Geno shoots a Geno Flash.

There's an entire postgame with boss rematches, some have new moves entirely, others just have added mechanics. Belome, for instance, has a 3rd fight in which he clones FAR more frequently, and the clones offer him significant damage reduction and immunity to certain attacks, so you have to juggle beating the clones before they stack invuln on him and he just shits out his AOEs.

he just instantly starts working then shits out the train after he sends the first one out. I physically cannot deal enough damage to beat him, and red essences don't last forever. What am I missing.

It does 500, but he gets his train out the first time in 4 turns.
And after that he instantly turns around ,starts working on it, then finishes it all in the same turn and I can't beat it, so he basically just spams his train and I only get one turn to try and set up again.
I had no trouble with him, but maybe I got lucky. As soon as he started building, it was Mario’s turn so he stopped instantly. Are you using Super Jump on him or not?
I fucked around a bit with my setup to just be pure damage and that did it.
Essentially what would happen is I'd kill the snifits, but any time booster would say "IM GONNA START WORKING" he'd turn around, and then before anyone else could act, he'd go "OKAY ITS DONE" and just nuke me, so I just set up mario with damage boosts and red essence and he was good to go.

That’s odd, he always gave me a chance to hit him, and jump attacks stop him from building. Maybe it’s because I had the Attack Scarf on Mario.
Any attack would stop his concentration, was it specifically jump attacks that did something more? I didn't get a whiff of that anywhere.

(Mario/Bowser/Peache's usual voice affects catch phrases) and no sound effect beep when you go through dialog. Wow. What else sucks about it? Yeah. Punchinello rematch's gimmick is the bob-ombs will sometimes spawn backwards, and you flip them to face you or him with perfect timed attacks (the ones that splash damage all around).
Most rounds he summons, there will be 1 flipped bob-omb, so you attack the other 3 with your party, get 3 perfect attacks, he takes 320 damage, do that 5 times, wham bam thank you monstermama.
I always found weird he wasn't part of the smithy gang, he is a bomb.
He wasn't from my understanding, by reading the original concept arts, is that this boss was supposed to be a detonator with a mobius strip. Punchnaro was supposed to be one of the guardians, which were repurposed throughout the game. The game has two members cut, the other one was a hypnotizer, I believe that's how he could command the cake in Marrymore, by controlling the people of the town. Again, cut form the game.
Is that better or worse than being outside without your clothes?

he gets an extra rematch fight in the postgame that makes you charge up a triple move from nil.
Basically all of postgame is a "are you sure your dumb ass knows how there are perfect guards" because pretty much every boss has instagib attacks that can only be just guarded.
He gets some fun moves though, and they look really good.
how do I fight culex 3d? I beat the 2d one and I'm already at smithy's lair. I am clueless as to where to find him
Beat smithy, you get a clear state save, then when you load it mario wakes up and "it was all a dream" and it starts a new thread of sidequests to get the super gear for the characters that don't have it, and some extra accessories while you refight old bosses with gimmicks.
I'm a little disappointed they did fuck-all to lengthen the game some, even if it was some post-game locations/unlocks besides Culex. Super Mario RPG isn't exactly long.
