Switch 2

Because there are so many small leaks about backwards compatibility and the tegra chips, there's zero conversation about what it's batshit moronic flop gimmick is gonna be. Nintendo had a sad time with GameCube, but printed money with the Wii. They fricked up with Wii U hard and are at their height with Switch. What can they frick up with Switch 2 or will they break the cycle?

It will probably be like the 3ds, with its gimmick being more optional and small.
Also things like hybrid consoles and motion aim are awesome.

its the answer to mouse a keyboard console players need, but they instead opt to aim crutches.

Aye, and I cannot fathom how it's not at least a system level option on other consoles.

Almost every shooter on Switch has gyro aim as an option, yet most of those same games don't have it at all on PS or Xbox.

Someone mentioned it was in the RE4 Chainsaw Demo saying it was great, but I couldn't find it in the options at all. It is a no brainer at this point, but maybe PlayStation and Xbox are using cheaper gyroscopes because they know there isn't a demand for it in their player base

I fricking love Gyro aiming honestly, but I hated it on 3DS because I didn't like staring down at the screen while moving it. With a controller it's much better. I'm hoping for a Switch where you can dock the internals of the console as a modular part and the screen itself has the exact capabilities as the Wii U GamePad, so we can play the Switch on TV with a second screen. They could give performance patches to Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Pikmin 3 Deluxe and other games ported for Switch but include the Wii U functionalities lost from not having a GamePad screen. DS and 3DS games on NSO are a given also.

Continuing from this, I loved the Gamepad in Splatoon and using the screen to jump to players without having to even look at the map or using the Ink Strike. I miss how great it was having a menu on the touchscreen for Zelda games and easily switching weapons. Pikmin 3 used it the best though hands down

Bros, i love the switch but i feel like I cant just ignore the recent information coming out. I like buying physical games on the switch, but dont know how i feel knowing they have a projected 20 year self life only. Probably going to end up rebuying a significant portion of my games on sony or something

You'd just have the same problem, they never fixed the CMOS issue. PS5s are subject as well.

i thought it was patched out last year at least on ps5. Worst case scenario a bluray player can retreive the game data on PC without the console. But that at least sounds like a fixable solution compared to cards just self destructing after so many years.

    It'll probably be DLSS.
New president is a lot more traditional as far as management approach goes so the new project will just be a more direct upgrade on the Switch.
Remember that Nintendo considered the handle on the Game Cube to be that console's gimmick. Or adding more buttons to the SNES controller.
They're not beyond safe 'gimmicks'. The new Switch will have DLSS/AI Upscaling be its main gimmick

  6. 1 year ago

They need to not call it a stupid gimmicky name like WiiU or 3DS, it just vonfuses the normies.

Switch 2 makes it clear its a new and improved version of the same tech, so they'll need to buy a replacement for the Switch they have.

Other than that, better joycons and a different looking dock. They can't change the tablet part, unless they go for a clamshell design, but they need to make it visually different from Switch 1.

Those two things and a good exclusive lineup at launch will sell like hotcakes.

They'd be better off calling it Switch and not having to change the name of Nintendo Switch Online. They really nailed the branding for the Switch with the satisfying jingle like Wii and DS had as a simple click noise and I guess they could just call it Nintendo Online Service but I think they'll want to reuse the Switch logo and add to it in some way

        Anonymous

There's already a Switch, a Switch Lite and a Switch OLED. They need to make sure people know it's replacement hardware, not just yet another variant.

The online service side should hopefully just carry on as is. It's the actual hardware that needs to be made clear that it's something EVERYONE should be buying, not just another optional side grade

That's a good fricking point honestly. Wii U was a catastrophe I'm sure they wanna avoid. They should just rename the Switch Online.

      Anonymous

The 3DS had a pretty straightforward name, it conveyed exactly what it was.
For the Wii U, the "U" part was not the main problem, the Wii branding was. Casuals had moved on to smartphones and the core market viewed anything associated with the Wii with unwanted gimmicky underpowered hardware, which also happened to be exactly right.
Microsoft has an even worse naming scheme, yet you don't see people complaining that they don't know which one is the current gen system or not.

        Anonymous

The issue with the Wii U was that the Wii Fit, Wii Music, Wii Zapper and Wii Motion Plus (and tons others) were a thing.
By contrast, the original DS always put its upgrade name after the DS title. DSi, DS Lite, etc.
3DS put the new part of the name before the DS part. This seems like a small thing but it clearly designated the 3DS as a completely new device from the original DS whereas the Wii U name fell in line with the conventions set up by the Wii's peripherals.
The Switch 2 should either have an entirely new non-Switch name (Changing the name of NSO to just be Nintendo Online isn't hard) or it should be be Switch 2. At MOST, it should put the new add on for the name before the word Switch, so Super Switch would be an easy one to go to

No one thinks like this. Not one person would look at a DS, a 3DS and a DSi and think the middle one MUST be a different generations of game systems based on the 3 being before DS.

3DS had an abysmal launch, and sold barely more rhan half the units the DS did, and the name being confusingly similar to the DS and lacking absolutely was a part of that.

            Anonymous

The fact that the 3DS eventually did hit decent numbers and the Wii U didn't should be proof that the name, while not great, was distinct enough to get the point across the people what the appeal was.
Also, it wasn't a piece of shit like the Wii U. It was a much more direct upgrade on the DS and eventually was the only thing on the shelves.
Honestly, It might be enough for Nintendo to literally just replace all Switches on store shelves with Successors and people will just buy it up because it's the Nintendo console

3DS did well because price drop and Pokémon. Wii U didn't have any decent massive games, it felt like it was never happening until the E3 where Mario 3D World was shown and I remember being shocked thinking it finally has an amazing looking game. I swear it only had NSMBU, Nintendo Land and maybe something else for the longest time. Smash was 2014 but two years too late, Splatoon was 2015 and the Wii and Wii U just had terrible release schedules. 3DS had system sellers like Pokémon is just a guaranteed system seller always honestly and their release schedule has improved massively with the Switch where I feel it still has life in the console because there are still good games coming out consistently or maybe I'm just getting older and the console lifespan doesn't feel as long anymore.
The new name being before Switch is a good idea, but I can't think of anything other than Super Switch or New Switch.
They should just call it Family Console in the West and Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan.

WiiU had decent games, and they all sell better on Switch.

MK8 has sold over 50million copies, WiiU was just shit hardware, too weak for enthusiasts, too confusingly named for normies and doing nothing anyone wanted with that tablet controller gimmick.

Kek I fricking loved the Wii U, but I swear I can't remember anything I played in the first year other than Nintendo Land and NSMBU, I dabbled with Zombi U and didn't bother buying Darksiders 2. I put a lot of time into Splatoon and made friends from /ink/ who weren't autistic which I was extremely on guard for and there were just some great games that eventually became even better on Switch with exception of Xenoblade Chronicles X which at this point they may as well put on their next console with more online co op features. The NFC scanner on the gamepad was so fricking dumb and then when amiibo came I'd forgotten it was even there and I like the Amiibo. It's a shame they dismantled Miiverse because of degenerates

A lack of competition, I guess
Good points, the name might be less important than I thought

I remember the price drop vividly because I bought it when I was 16 and price drop was announced less than a month later kek
                Ambassador games were nice though
Definitely lack of competition. PSP was dead and PlayStation abandoned the Vita fast. Playstation 4 was doing well and Vita was doing shit so PlayStation abandoned the Vita, but Wii U was doing shit and 3DS was doing well, so I feel Nintendo not *completely* abandoning Wii U came down to them just not wanting to abandon their main console where they were developing games for a successor and learning to make HD games also. First time I've thought to cut Sony some slack for abandoning the Vita

It sold 70 million fewer units despite having a new Mario Kart and (eventually) exclusive Pokemon games.

The Switch is already 40 million sales ahead of it.

We can debate how big of a doctor it was, but for both it and the WiiU Nintendo did themselves no favours with going for cutesy pun names based on the old hardware they wanted to stop selling.

You want an example of a company doing this shit properly? Sony.

Playstations just get a new number on the end of their name, and a complete hardware redesign. They all sell gangbusters, even when making incredibly stupid errors otherwise, like the PS3.

The only time they didn't follow this naming convention was with the Vita, which kind of speaks for itself.

3DS after DSi XL, DSi, DS Lite and DS was not a good name for a replacement system for every DS before it.

We overestimate how savvy most of the people buying systems are, because it's obvious to us that something is new and not just a design refresh or minor upgrade, since we're passionate about the subject and stay informed.

The 3DS when released was too expensive, lacked killer apps and was too close in design and name to the precious system family. That last one is way more important than people give it credit for, because there were likely a huge number of lost sales from parents that never understood that it wasn't just another DS that could 3D this time.

Switch 2 is the ideal. Super Switch or something would work too, but if they call it Switch Up or something, they are going to lose market and mindshare due to normie confusion.

People didn't have any doubts about the 3DS being a next gen system, they just didn't want it. Nintendo fricked up by thinking 3D as a gimmick was more important than a lower price point or better specs and smartphones were eating into the handheld market. It was never going to be as successful as the DS no matter what Nintendo did with the name.

            Anonymous

Again, it's obvious to you as an enthusiast.

John Smith, who has no interest in games beyond buying his nephew a Christmas present, is not going to know that a 3DS is a completely different system to the DSi he bought him last year. Nothing about the name, design or games makes it obvious it's a new system at a glance, and that is necessary for garnering a public mindshare.

The 3DS definitely had more problems than that, but the Switch has already outsold it and the WiiU combined, in a time where competition is fiercer and smartphone gaming is even more ubiquitous.

Names, design and marketing are all far, FAR more important than you and others give it credit for.

If anything all this talk about a console cycle of successes and failure doesn't really apply. Outside of the Motion control one which was a craze, Nintendo consoles have been on a steady decline. SNES 49mil > N64 33mil > GC 22mil > (boomers playing that sports thing) > Wii U 13mil. With the outlier removed there is a clear pattern.
You know what hasn't been on a steady decline, Nintendo handhelds. Every single one has been a success. I would argue the 3DS is what really killed the Wii U, after all it had many of the same type of games but was cheaper and could go anywhere. I'd bet most people owned a 3DS and PS/XB in that gen.
That is why I am not worried at all about the Super Nintendo Switch.

              Anonymous

I'd say the decline was from having competition and Nintendo being too Japanese for their own good when marketing to the West and providing games that teenagers loved instead of Japanese kids. The Wii was them going fully towards families and that wasn't sustainable, so they focused on 'hardcore gamers' with the Wii U and failed spectacularly because they made every wrong decision. It truly felt like they made all the correct choices with the Switch though and have continued to do so.
A Super Nintendo Switch sounds good as a Switch Pro but as a succession console it's weird when you have to add another subtitle for the Super Nintendo Switch Lite or Super Nintendo Switch XL Pro
