    >Docked: Between PS4 Pro & Xbox Series S before DLSS with more modern hardware than the former
    >RAM: Slower than PS5 & XSX|S, but more capacity than XSS. Should have 10.5-11 GB of RAM available to games

The Deck OLED has better battery life because it got a die shrink to 6nm and was given a bigger battery, not because MUH OLED.

                Anonymous

Yes because muh oled. That helped more than the die shrink and the battery improvement wasn't by that much. Oled often gets 2x the battery life of the original deck.

it was the die shrink you dumb monkey
the oled screen is more power hungry outside of displaying dark scenes
it's bigger and has higher refresh rate in addition to being much brighter
oled also uses much more power to display full white than lcd, in bright scenes it's less efficient

                Anonymous

It was a 1nm die shrink and the battery only 10Whr more. That's not going to give you 2x battery life. Oled is more power efficient no matter how hard you're coping over the switch 2 not having it.

PS4 pro relied on checkerboard rendering to upscale 1080p to 4k, it never targeted 4k because the console would burst your eardrums and lift off into the stratosphere after rendering 2 frames.

Of course it's only not shit if you give it a decent starting resolution to begin with. Try to upscale 1080p to 1440p with it and it'll look good, try to upscale 360p to 1080p it'll look like crap.

They're usually one gen behind but the great boon for Nintendo is that multiplat games this gen have been painfully mediocre.

        Anonymous

As was the case last gen. Part of the reason the XSS exists is because Xbox quite rightly noticed graphical improvements plateaued at the end of 7th gen. The only thing more power is used for this gen is the same visuals at higher resolutions, or so many garish particle and lighting effects you can’t tell what the hell is happening.
It’s the reason Switch got so many impossible ports like Nier Automa, Hogwarts Legacy and Doom Eternal, even if they dub HD last gen.
Low spec gaming is where it’s at. Even in PC gaming, high end rigs are just ripping you off to play the exact same games on a bigger screen with more pixels, but the same or worse pixel density.

        Anonymous

Also the cross-gen period has lasted longer than usual so a lot of multiplats will make their way to the Switch 2. It'll be a way more viable third-party machine than the original Switch.

This is my worry. Sure the switch 2 is powerful enough for current gen 3rd party titles. But next gen (which the switch 2 is starting) will be here for Ps6 and nextbox in like 3 years? By then the Switch2 will be underpowered again and no one will make games for it that aren't shit graphically.

no gimmicks, just the switch but better

the big question question is the cost. One of the biggest advantages the switch has is it's affordability. People would probably buy it if it's $500 and launches with a must play game, but if they can sell it at $400 then Sony and Microsoft are fricking over.

      >spoiler
I'm sure Square wants to get it onto another popular system (especially one that's popular in Japan) as soon as possible

First, because I'd rather encourage smaller square games like HD2D and such to come to Switch 2, especially since they come out more frequently but don't take away attention from 1st party titles
And second Because frick you for taking FF7 over to the PS1 instead of the N64 and leaving Nintendo in the gulch for a decade.

I think the only Japanese company that still hate Nintendo is Sega, Ironically, most of their recent JRPG games sold best on the Switch platform if they had it. Oh sure, I'm just saying what I would do if I were handling 3rd party relations with Square
          >why prevent your business partner from making you money
To remind them that the flightiness of being disloyal goes both ways. Like, I'd let them put everything on Switch except FF7 Remake/Rebirth, and specifically because it's a remake of the game that literally defined their competitor's entrance into the game market and Nintendo's home-console decline with 3rd parties for nearly 2 decades. I think there's some value in showing reminding Square and other AAA 3rd parties that, especially nowadays, they need Nintendo more than Nintendo needs them. Fairweather friends are no friends at all.
Like Nintendo's worst performing eras were the N64-Game Cube (when they were trying to get 3rd party support back and failing) and the Wii U era (when they tried to make a core gaming device to appeal to 3rd parties again and they still didn't support it much).
If I was Nintendo (obviously they are probably more pragmatic than me), I'd feel like the plague of AAA bloat is something I'd want to hasten the death of in Japan, not give a lifeline to

              >How did it work out for NoA to make so many enemies in the 90s?
It pushed nintendo to fully turn inwards and become a 1st-party centric business instead of continuing to chase the departed-train of 3rd party support.
And now they're the most profitable company in japan and literally making more money than they ever did pre-Switch, primarily driven by their 1st party titles which make up 80% of their software revenue.
That's my point: if 3rd parties want to come to the table, it's worth it to make it clear that Nintendo is stable enough and self sufficient enough to go without AAA 3rd party support and still be wildly successful. Make it clear to 3rd parties that they don't really have any leverage here, especially as they start to buckle under the weight of AAA budgets that threaten their entire studios

              Anonymous

They did but the rate of increase is much much slower.
I think it's sort of inevitable, at least from generation to generation of hardware, for dev time to increase. The question is how much faster are you going and what are your sales expectations.
The biggest issue for 3rd party AAA in the West but even in Japan isn't just the ballooning budgets but the ROI expectations and KPI. Some moron exec will say "I want this game to have the same rate of return of Fortnite or League or Roblox" and suddenly a game that makes back it's budget and a half is considered a flop or failure because it didn't make ENOUGH
Nintendo has much more reasonable expectations, so even growing budgets isn't a huge issue if the sales expectations are within reason

          >The Steam Deck is sold at a loss
It isn't. They make money on every sale. The "secret" to what it is cheaper is simply the volume of its production and the fact Valve doesn't have to pay Microsoft since they aren't a Windows OEM.

The deck doesn't have volume, valve is not a hardware manufacturer. If volume was what mattered in keeping the price down, asus would be able to match it. Valve can only get the price that low because they can subsidize it with steam.

              >The deck doesn't have volume,
The Deck has sold about 5 million units by now since they're doing around 1 million units a quarter this year. It might not be much compared to consoles, but it is huge compared to what PCs normally sell.

              >valve is not a hardware manufacturer
They have been for a while now. Ever since they realized they couldn't work with Windows OEMs because of the terms of their agreements with Microsoft.

              >If volume was what mattered in keeping the price down, asus would be able to match it.
None of the Windows handhelds are even showing up in the stats yet. They're being sold more similar to other Windows PCs OEMs are selling. Relatively small batches.
Asus has to constantly re-tool lines to produce a wider variety of products. Valve is running dedicated production lines that only make the Deck and buying more chips for them a quarter than the Windows handhelds order for the whole production run.

The N64 flopped because the NES and SNES were the biggest games in town for third-party developers. But when the Playstation hit, a bunch left Nintendo high and dry, leaving huge gaps in their line-up. Nintendo has since learned not to depend on third-party games. 75% of all revenue earned on the Switch came from Nintendo published games. Nintendo is self-sufficient and that is why the Switch is so successful.

        >Switch wasn't weaker in 2017 than Deck is in 2024
Steam Deck released in early 2022, and the Van Gogh APU is still insanely competitive when measuring frames per watt. Valve isn't like Lenovo or Asus who plan to release iterative upgrades to their hadhelds every year like their laptops, Valve is waiting for a significant uplift in APU performance before they bother making the steam deck 2. Most people are guessing late 2025 or early 2026, but regardless of when it releases, the Steam Deck 2 is guaranteed to outclass the switch 2 in almost every metric. Whether the gap in performance is large enough for the SD2 to emulate Switch 2 games is a different matter.

            >Zero chance at all
We don't know at this point. No one expected the Steam Deck to spur on all the emulator devs to optimize their shit code to run better on the steam deck, but they did, and the benefit is that emulators as a whole are in a much better state than just a few years ago, especially PS3 and Switch emulation. Having one piece of hardware for devs to target is a huge boon to gamers, especially poorgay pc gamers who don't have resources to spare to bruteforce games into running well.

We still don't have good emulation for ps2 and OG Xbox. People emulate Nintendo consoles because those are the ones people care about

        >We still don't have good emulation for ps2
Ps2 emulation is at a state where you can comfortably emulate everything on 6 year old laptops. The steam deck can emulate PS2 at 2-3x resolution with widescreen hacks at 8 watts.
Anyone who claims PS2 emulation is bad either hasn't bothered emulating anything in recent years, or they consoom chinkshit emulation hadhelds that run on arm chips which fricking suck for emulating anything past the dreamcast.

If the new Switch was going to be clocked high and do 15, or even 9 watts then it might outperform the Deck at those performance levels.
But it won't be drawing that much power and will probably max out around 7w, with most games likely to aim for 4 or 5.
The GPU hardware is the same generation as the Deck, and it will be memory limited. Don't expect a Deck-killer.

the switch 2 seems to be close to OR AT the highest level of power that handhelds can actually have in 2024.
    that’s very good.

        >what will be the default resolution for docked mode?
I honestly think 4K with checkerboard rendering like PS4 era.
But if what OP is reporting is true then Native 4K could be doable with a lot of games.

I wonder if Nintendo will actually put some extra hardware on the dock this time around to allow for more horsepower when docked?

Then again, this is Nintendo, they never lose money on hardware. So expect to be underwhelmed.
If they kept the screen at 720p at least we would at least see a noticeable upgrade, but they had to go with 1080p. Shit move imo... unless they are going N64 on this b***h and putting some beefy hardware on it.

I literally thought it was gonna be 8 GB LDDR5 with 1.5TF in handheld and 2.2TF docked with 64GB of memory.

12GB LPDDR5X is actually huge but it all depends on OS crippling.

The PS5 only has 12.5 GB of GDDR6 for games while the Series X only has 11.5 GB (Series S has 7.5 GB) due to their OS being cancerous as shit.

The Steam Deck OS doesn't dedicate RAM as it could use as little as 350 MB to as much as 4 GB of it's 16 GB pool.

If the Switch 2 shares the same 800 MB the Switch OS uses then it's 11.2 GB of RAM

Realistic case scenario it shares the same RAM the Orin Linux OS uses which is 1.5 which puts it at 10.5 GB.

The worse case scenario for memory would dedicate 1 or 2 GB to the CPU allowing it to raw crunch numbers beyond the current Zen 2 Processor but that would be a waste since the GPU and RAM would have to fight for the rest of the RAM and even 1080p would be impossible even if the GPU was overclocked

It's crazy to see Nintendo finally pushing for power again. It's been over 20 years since the last time they did that with the gamecube. If they can maintain a fairly low price, like 400, this thing could really put some pressure on Sony and Microsoft. It wont be as strong as a PS5, but not far off. More like gamecube vs ps2 or n64 vs ps1 than PS4 vs switch.

        >wouldn't really call this chasing power. More like trying to decently future proof themselves.
I don't think it's possible to produce a stronger handheld device than this in 2025. The only thing they could have really done to improve this whatsoever is go for 16gb of RAM. But even though it's "only" 12gb, it's the fastest mobile RAM available, substantially better than Steam deck RAM. They are really pushing the envelope, and I wont be shocked if this device ends up being 500 dollars or more, although I hope they have found some miracle way to keep the price down.

          Anonymous

            $400 seem realistic for 8GB of LPDDR5

            there's almost a 70 dollar (for consumers) difference between 8GB of LPDDR5 vs LPDDR5X

And Unless Nintendo is willing to burn money (like the N64, 3DS, Wii U) especially with the weak yen to dollar ratio I could see this trying to aim for 499$ maxed

              Anonymous

Overpriced Nintendo consoles never sell well, not even once. They even had to bite the bullet and cut the price for the 3DS because it was too expensive for parents to buy for their kids at the time, and the console only started selling after that.

                Anonymous

the 3DS didn't really have a good line up out the gate though. It will depend on the line up of games. Also, with inflation, consumers don't see $400 the way they used to. Nintendo was able to price the OLED at 350 and that sold well

I mean the GPU and CPU are still outdated but let me put it in perspective.

Wii U - GPU was based on 2011 Radeon tech but with a modfiied 1991 PowerPC CPU
      3DS - 2005 Japanese GPU with a 2009 ARM CPU
Switch - 2015 Maxwell mGPU with an failed 8 core 2012 ARM CPU
      Switch 2 - 2021 GPU with a 2020 ARM CPU

Firstly the Orin is a 2022 GPU, not a 2021 GPU. Second, you cant only compare when it released. The Orin was MUCH more impressive relative to when it came out than the X1 was. The X1 was not far ahead of what the top tablets were doing, whereas the Orin whipes the floor with any tablet right now, it's not even close.

I think raw GPU power is more important.
4K is pushing 4x more pixels per frame than 1080p. PS4 Pro only had ~2.2x increase in GPU power

          Anonymous

That is true, but once I realized that increasing the resolution doesn't affect all parts of rendering equally, I've realized the whole "% increase in pixel count but only % increase in cores/frequency" doesn't mean much since it doesn't scale linearly

Nah, it was probably delayed to ensure a steady flow of 1st party titles starting from release. Nintendo isn't going to depend on 3rd parties to sell the Switch 2; not after what happened with the Wii U.
