System Shock 1

I can't be the only one who thinks SS1 is better than SS2.
Just recently played and beat the enhanced edition and it makes SS2 seem boring in comparison.

    I've heard that opinion before.

Both are excellent in their own way. SS1 is older and just less remembered. SS2 is also fading away in significance. I would say that I really liked the massive amounts of guns and multiple ammo types that weren't bog standard shit like literally standard/Anti-personnel/anti-armor ammo. SS1 also felt a lot more finished and appropriately long. Story-wise there's not much there though, the plot in SS2 is way better.

I actually thought the plot of the first game was pretty engaging. SHODAN is at her best in the first game and she has scheme after scheme you are trying to stop, as well as Diego and his role in it all. The audio logs really sell it too. In the second game SHODAN wasn't much of a menace and was more or less a side character bossing you around. All the memorable quotes of hers are from SS1. The end fight in 2 was also pretty dumb compared to the end fight in 1.

SS2 has enemies that are interesting to fight unlike 1.

Idk. Theres way more enemy and weapon variety in 1 compared to 2. the combat had surprising depth with different ammo types, implants, upgrades and drugs you can take. Although I do admit there are a few too many hit-scanners in SS1

    > weapons

I didn't express myself clearly. The ammo in SS2 and weapons in SS2 are pretty bog-standard. Pistol, Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Grenade Launcher. The only interesting weapons are the deathbeam thing which is completely useless compared to a Grenade Launcher and the stasis field generator, which is just a glorified massive stun gun that SS1 has immediately in the game.

SS1 has cooler weapon concepts that ramp up much more. You start off with the dart gun that has both tranq and dart ammo, pistols, the flechette with fricking hornet and splinter ammo which is cool, the magnum with hollow point and teflon rounds which is awesome, and at the end you get rail guns and rocket launchers, skorpion machine guns and whatnot.

The plot in SS1 is Hal9000. AI goes insane and tries to kill humanity. It's well written, all bourgeoning empire of steel careening into the sky and all that, but it's pretty simple all through the game. You foil all her individual plans to frick up earth. Good stuff.

SS2 is philosophical debate between individualism, collectivism and the machine. You are the individual. The Many are collectivism and swarm intelligence, a bit like the Borg in Star Trek. You frick up collectivism with the help of the Machine, but then it tries to take over again and you, the human individual have to foil the machine to retain humanity. Also it's a debate between organic life and artificial life, and you as an augmented guy are the mixture of both. There's more going on here for SS2 than SS1 imo.

No, it's actually a video game.

This board has a real problem with making threads for the same things over the course of a week.

But yes, as games SS1 mechanically is far better than 2.
    >muh controls
For the billionth fricking time, there's mouse look mods and the enhanced edition. This is not an excuse anymore to avoid playing it.

What's mechanically better about it? All the ammo types are still variations of armor piercing and anti-personnel just with different names. The cyber hardware is cool but I mostly just use the jumpjets, shield, and skates and SS2 makes up for those with psionics, speed hypos, and armors. I like SS1 because it's pretty much a sci-fi dungeon crawl but SS2 has the benefits of the Dark engine with great AI, stim and response so you can think outside the box and do things like set yourself on fire with internalized pyrokinesis to avoid protocol droid damage, bash metal pipes to bait shotgun hybrids around corners and ambush them, Eric Brosius' fantastic sound design, and enemies that don't get stuck on corners because of 1994 pathfinding. The only things I can think of that SS1 put more effort into compared to 2 are the minigames which I don't particularly care about, and cyberspace, which I find to be a burden compared to SS2's hacking mechanics, especially when playing on the higher difficulties and you have to do the cyberspace segments in the span of 40 seconds or it resets and you take damage.

Agreed. Stop spamming the System Shock shit. Some shill is likely doing this because the remake is theoretically due out in March.

Yes SS1 is way better. SS2 feels really streamlined in comparison, they're both really good games though

since there's yet another system shock thread up, has anyone given citadel (https://github.com/JosiahJack/Citadel) a try yet? this dude's been faithfully remaking ss1 in full 3d using unity for nearly a fricking decade and he's apparently almost done with it - he might actually finish his remake before nightdive finishes theirs lol

hmmm, coo, i guess? I just never like remakes of movies or games i enjoyed.

      *non-retro warning*

On that note, while the Bioshock games are pretty rubbish, an anon on here recommended Prey by Arkane Studios as a much more fulfilling spiritual sequel. I went and checked it out and i have to say i agree. It's fricking great, and made me feel that same system-shock feeling again for the first time in a decade or more.
