System shock remake

Any anons who played OG system shock on release, can you say what is good and what is bad about the remake.
Is it faithful or is it shit.
Or anons who have just played the remake give opinions.

It is so faithful you can use original guides to complete the game. Also the mod that replaces the music with the old music is A MUST.

      No its not anon.
I never played the OG game at all, let alone on release but the OG OST is pretty messy, dated.
Its like playing OG LoZ with hyrule field blaring constantly. Midi soundtrack/electro like. Dated as frick.

          Quick explain please?

          [...]
There is a difference between appreciating OSTs from the time and thinking it is a "MUST"
SS dated midi electro soundtrack is dated, it was at a point in games when music was basic, but needed to be in games and was just repeated at loud volumes constantly. It in no way an immersive OST that tried to immerse the player in the games world, like modern music in games do (copying film ST usage)
You being a "frfr" zoomer, you would not have a clue.
Again its OK to appreciate the old vidya chip tune tier music but pretending they are some great music that the game feels empty without is for morons.

Here is your immersive sim horror sci fi game soundtrack to get you in the mood for some nice horror on a space station...

          Defo MUST HAVE soundtrack huh....
          Blasting in your ear constantly...

I'll be the devil's advocate to that zoomBlack person and say that it's not necessarily bad that they made the soundtrack no longer blast in your ears constantly, but that being said
the fact that they didn't make the combat music remixes of the original soundtrack and instead replaced it completely is fricking blasphemy.
Didn't they make a fricking badass remix of ethical constraints and ended up only using it for like 10 seconds in the intro, and it wasn't even the fricking same version they released originally?

Final boss is horrendous, thankfully they're going to release a rework (or did they already? dunno). Lack of variety in enemies and bosses but that's faithful to the original game, same with the infinite healing by dying over and over that sort of makes it a grind instead of a challenge.

You don't revert to save points unless you really frick up. You can just die over and over and slowly whittle away at the enemies, respawning each time so I felt pressured to chip away at enemies with my shitty pistol since its got the ammo system like resident evil. I would have preferred losing progress when you die.

        >in no way an immersive OST
factually wrong when the game combines multiple midi files on the fly to create custom songs depending on variables during gameplay. That being said, the mod to add the og music to the remake dowsn't do that, and is consequently dogshit

I mean EA as in they made it playable on modern OS?
NDS own the IP now and that is their whole thing they make old games available on modern OS.
I thought SS2 EA was one of the first things they did.
Or do you mean some remake thing?
If so I guess they are trying to gauge the sales on SS1 remake. It releases on console next week too.

Only played the remake, currently in Executive level and have been playing on both Steam Deck and PC. Controller controls are fricking awful and starting on the Deck was a mistake, but I have been warming up to the game more now that I have switched to PC, and Executive is a major step up from the previous levels. In my honest opinion, I keep wondering if I would enjoy the game more if I just played the original, because then I would feel more forgiving towards some of the more dated aspects of the game like simplistic AI and early levels that don't really feel like a logical part of a space station. Overall, the remake is for people who want the original with a facelift and some QOL changes.

      >Controller controls are fricking awful
      can you elaborate?
I was thinking to pick it up on console myself, though I was gonna wait a bit for reviews and patches.
      >want the original with a facelift
From the gameplay I have seen of it, this is the impression I got from it, from dated UI to basic generic boomer shooter like corridor enemies, basic AI etc.
Not that I mind games like that though its obviously not a preference.

        >can you elaborate?
Keybinds for implants, explosives and healing items straight up don't work on controller, or at least I have not managed to get them to work. There is no toggle for sprint either, and I don't remember if it can be rebound, so sprinting is done awkwardly by pressing the left stick down for as long as you want to sprint. Leaning is also very awkwardly implemented in that you press the left stick while standing still and you go into "leaning mode" where moving the stick left or right leans you instead of moving you. You stop leaning by pressing the stick again. Finally, there is no aim assist, which I'm sure many don't mind, but I have found it to make rhe combat sometimes frustrating as many enemies are hitscan or near hitscan, and the hit detection for the player weapons feels really small. This combined with the awkward leaning gets annoying sometimes.

Oh and to add, while the inventory is manageable, it has been very much planned with a mouse in mind. You can move the cursor around with the right stick, or navigate using the dpad, but it's much slower than on a mouse. This combined with the implant button not working means that you have to open the inventory and move your cursor over the implant you want to toggle every time you want to turn them on and off.

I dont use aim assist on controller myself.
While I didnt expect them to perfect the controller gameplay because in my experience PC only devs have no fricking clue how to do controller inputs properly. I didn't expect it to be that bad.
Hopefully with the game releasing on console next week they have put some actual thought into it and improved the inputs and will release the update on PC too.
The UI may be a slight issue on controller though a lot of games now use raw mouse look controls on controller. Most ubisoft games I have played for like the last 10 years have had raw mouse like controls in the UI, also with Dpad controls. I am fine with using the left stick like a mouse.

If they frick up the inputs on console, that shit can get taken down from the store so they need to actually put effort in to get it right.

You can't really go wrong with either but I prefer the remake.

There would be no point. The SS1 remake plays quite similarly to 2, so the only thing a SS2 remake would do is change the visuals. Some people might say it needs that, but I think it still looks really nice to this day.

I like it so far. Something does feel off though with the combat. Can't put my finger on it though. The weapons themselves feel fine, I think there's something off with the enemies you kill. I don't have a problem with the music. Also I get a headache if I play it too long. Might be all the neon light bullshit.

it's good but doesn't replace the original, I guess you could say the gameplay is modernized but it doesn't hold your hand like modern games
for some negatives I guess it's missing a lot of little gimmicks and stuff that the original had you could interact with through the MFD windows, more types of puzzles and are generally better in the original

      >Something does feel off though with the combat
gun sound and animation is really good but enemies just ragdolling most of the time when killed doesn't give the right sense of impact
the combat is different from the original too, you are expected to wait for enemies to fire a volley then attack which doesn't quite work against groups but they also track you through walls and can instantly hit you if you poke your head out at the wrong time

  15. 5 days ago
    Anonymous

Music is pretty tame compared to the original.
Something is off with the combat, I never truly reached a point where I felt powerful like the original, maybe it has something to do with limiting your inventory, and on that note, the limited inventory SUCKS and adds absolutely nothing to the game.
I feel like there should have been 2 more inventory upgrades tucked away somewhere, but nope.
Final level sucks and completely misses the point, and the final boss can suck my dick, I cheat engine'd that shit on the hardest difficulty. The monkeys who designed it can kill themselves, objectively worse than the original.

played and loved both. there is some differences. some areas are larger in the remake. mainly the groves from what i remember. there is a chess mini game in the remake that isn't in the original. i'm not sure if mini games are in the remake. like pong or the racing one that you get in cyber space. the music is worse in the remake but not awful. weapon balance is different and weapons are different. the riot gun in the OG is awful while in the remake it's an actual shotgun. the augments i believe were kinda streamlined in the remake. i remember the remake having less.
      >OST better in OG
      >OG is easier
      >OG is a faster game
      >cyberspace is different and better in remake
      >final boss fight is better in remake
      >areas are larger in remake
      >scrap and weapon upgrade mechanics are specific to remake
      >inventory management is simpler in OG
      >there was more cyberspace sections in the remake. at least more mandatory ones.
      >the remake had like pop up floors for ambushes which wasn't in the original. the original just had opening walls which was much less frequent and not random but the enemies were greater in number (cpu nodes on medical for example)
honestly i prefer the OG version but if some zoom zoom was to ask if the remake was worth playing knowing full well they would never touch the original i'd say yes.

Yes. Shock Remake is the worst boss fight of the entire series and spiritual sequels

          >Original Shock was a bad fight against SHODAN in cyberspace with wonky controls for 60 seconds until you either beat her or your screen is filled with her face and you lose
          >System Shock 2 requires you to disable three terminals (or shoot directly at the shield) and then destroy SHODAN while she attacks you with an avatar, a rocket and some laser floors. Lasts all of 90 seconds at most
          >Bioshock has you stick an ADAM hypo into Fontaine to drain him and then fight different elemental phases which is basically a single elemental attack and a charge with some security bots and splicers in later phases. Takes about 120 seconds
          >Bioshock 2's final fight is a five minute battle against waves of increasingly more difficult enemies in the game. No bosses whatsoever
          >Bioshock Infinite's is pretty much the same as Bioshock 2s final fight except you can call in songbird to help you destroy zeppelins

None of them are really any good

Game is good, but original is better.

    what's good with remake:
    - guns and impact
    - enemies design, also new enemies
    - most of the stuff which made the original good still intact

    what's bad with remake:
    - art design can be questionable, some levels look and feel differently and not in a positive way (it can be dark where it didn't in the original, and where it was dark in original it is not, and some other discrepancies), some characters which looked good and plausible now look cringe and flanderised.
    - melee combat lacks impact, so it is not so satisfying, also unnecessary animations everywhere
    - UX was full of rookie mistakes at release when I was playing it. Prey 2017 had godlike interface and inventory/frobbing ui in comparison, and it was like 6 years ago.
    - most puzzles were dumbed down, so they are not being clever, just obtuse and hard to read due to horrible UX.
    - Music isn't really bad, it's just unimpressive knockoff of Mick Gordon's Prey OST with some of the homages to original's music motifs here and there, most of the time there are forgettable quiet ambients which change to battle themes when combat starts and go back to ambient as soon as it combat ends. I don't sure what went wrong, is it mastering or dynamic music mixing but it didn't worked out for me, while I liked original's ost and remember almost every track of it.

    >Any anons who played OG system shock on release, can you say what is good and what is bad about the remake.
It was buggy as hell with a number of softlocking bugs. And rebinding many keys would cause them to just not work, both on controller and keyboard. To my knowledge most of that is still unpatched.

      >Muh boss fights in muh imsim
When will Black folk understand that the real final boss fight in any good imsim is the final stretch leading to them rather than the actual boss.
Bosses in imsims are always either gimmicky or straight up bad because the games are designed around dealing with situations, level layout, resources and enemies as a whole in a smart way, and putting the player and a boss in a closed arena always ends up making the flow of the game fall to the floor face-first.

      >MUH MUH THE FINAL BOSS IS BAD
      >IT WAS ALSO DOGSHIT BEFORE
      >BUT IT IS BADDER NOW I SWEAR!
      Shut the frick up.

The final boss of the remake is the elite enemy rush room. Shodan is a victory lap unless its difficulty 3.

I played OG system shock for the first time and really liked it like 2 years ago then dropped the remake about 2/5ths of the way after finding the new map and enemies really annoying. Ambient OST replacing the original soundtrack completely is also one of the most soulless things I ever seen in a game.

Is there some kind of texture filtering option to get rid of the pixelated textures? I am not a fan of having pixelated textures on realistic looking models

      Anonymous

Just don't look at them from very close.
They're not realistic at all though, every design is explicitly made to look sort of cartoony.

Ok I didn't mean realistic in a completely literal sense but I don't really know how to put it. Maybe I would say I don't like the pixelated textures with the high poly count models as I think it looks jarring. Funnily enough a lot of graphics mods for Daggerfall Unity have the opposite problem where they have high res textures on low poly models which also doesn't look right to me

        https://www.nexusmods.com/systemshock2023/mods/21
It's one of the earliest mods. The textures are already bad on purpose but getting rid of the intentional pixelation definitely makes the game look better.

Thanks, I'll check this out once I play it to see how it looks
