  • The people obsessed with uncovering gaming’s deepest, darkest secrets For some, playing a video game to completion isn’t enough. They want to reveal the secrets behind its creation.

This article was originally published March 2016. For some, playing a video game to completion isn’t enough. They want to reveal the secrets behind its creation. Turning their fevered gaze towards cut content and cancelled games, these individuals assemble in online communities, their goal being to uncover fresh information about our favourite games and the abandoned titles we never got to play. Unseen64 is one such community. Started by a group of Italian friends in 2001, the website has grown into an international venture, staffed by volunteers from all around the globe. These volunteers are responsible for scouring the web for news about unfinished and rejected games, to archive for…

IRL streamer catches guy blatantly hacking CS:GO at Dreamhack "Are you cheating?" "Yep."

The balls on this guy randomly caught by IRL streamer Benczek while filming at Dreamhack. He’s playing CS:GO with no less than three blatant hacks visible on his screen – in full view of everyone. Did you spot that? First there’s the third person mode to help him look around corners, definitely not a Counter-Strike feature. Then there’s the neon purple skins, allowing him to more easily see other players. Finally, there’s a bunnyjumping script to automate the speed boost that can result as a quirk of the physics in many games. When the cheater notices the camera, he smiles, knowing full well what Benczek is about to say. “Are…

  • Hacker receives developer-sanctioned death penalty in Guild Wars 2 Sweet justice.

Aside from feeding that loot treadmill addiction so you can stave off delirium tremens for just one more night, arguably the best part about playing an MMO is that it’s a growing, ever-changing, living world. In MMOs, players will often affect the game in an way that’s so big — through creating trends that sweep through the community, or by exploiting certain game systems on a grand scale — that the developers take notice, like with Destiny’s now-canonical loot cave. Recently, a hacker was terrorizing ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2 until the game’s player community gathered their own evidence on this player’s misdeeds, reported it to ArenaNet, and had the hacker’s character put to death…

Blizzard files suit against makers of Starcraft II cheats Canadian, Peruvian programmers sold map hacks and cheats for the popular RTS.

Blizzard started the month of October by banning 5000 cheaters in Starcraft II. Out to show they mean business, the developer is now going after the hackers who created the cheats and taking them to court. Last week Blizzard filed suit in the Los Angeles US District Court against 3 suspected programmers: “Just days after the release of Starcraft II, Defendants already had developed, marketed, and distributed to the public a variety of hacks and cheats designed to modify (and in fact destroy) the Starcraft II online game experience. In fact, on the very day that Starcraft II was released, representatives of the hacks Web site advised members of the…

Are esports athletes taking drugs? We look into the problem of drugs in professional gaming.

Ask yourself, what would be the coolest way to make a living? If you answered “Be Hugh Hefner” then yes, that would be a cool way to live, but we’re thinking of an even more awesome profession than that… no, actually, we lie; there’s nothing cooler than being a playboy. Okay, different approach: what profession would allow you to live out your gaming passion, gain a small amount of fame and glory, and yes maybe even a few groupies along the way? Why, being a cyber athlete, of course. These days, electronic sports (esports) are becoming a global phenomenon, with thousands of people earning a living from their ability to…

Blizzard bans 59,000 World of Warcraft accounts 22 million gold also removed from the economy.

A Blizzard community manager confirmed today that the developer banned approximately 59,000 WOW accounts during June for direct violations of the World of Warcraft Terms of Use policy, which includes the use of third-party gold and item-farming hacks. WorldOfWarcraft.com also reports that 22 million in ill-gotten gold was removed from the game’s economy. The community manager stated that the company “regrets having to take such extreme action,” but stressed that the gold and item farming was affecting “the achievements of those who play legitimately.” Full statement: As part of our efforts to eliminate cheating from World of Warcraft, we recently banned approximately 59,000 World of Warcraft accounts in the month of…
