You think people didn't want to play it because they were contrarians? Jesus christ. People didn't want to play it because it severely dumbed down everything about the FPS genre.

Why play a game like Halo when games like UT99, Q3, Tribes, CS, HL:DM, Painkiller, etc. were all out before and were all vastly better in every single way? The only reason why anyone played Halo was because they either didn't have a PC at the time, or they were too stupid to play all the other FPS games that were out at the time.

who gives a shit whether it's a "military simulator" (as if battlefield the game where you can do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-wFI9vTqto in is a simulator of any kind)
the core gameplay of battlefield is far closer to that of CoD and halo. why is it suddenly good in battlefield to have a 2 weapon limit, slow movement speed and ADS but bad for CoD or halo? can you elaborate?

                Anonymous

Because military simulators are an entirely different genre to arena shooters.
They're closer to tactical shooters than run and gun shooters.
One intends you to plan ahead and go slow, the other you're supposed to go fast, aim fast and be a test of your twitch reflexes.
If you make a arena shooter that is slow aiming becomes a joke, if you add auto-aim on top of that then you don't even need to aim, so why even play a shooter at that point?
That's why Halo's entire design is shit, and it was an obligatory compromise since it was designed for a platform that doesn't work for shooters.

No, I just see value in a game beyond its mechanical purity, namely how fun it was to play with friends and occasionally return to. homosexuals like you who are still seething over what kids enjoyed/currently enjoy are manchildren in the purest sense of the word, you haven't progressed beyond infantile outrage over shit that doesn't matter.

It has nothing to do with age and everything to do with the state of the internet and society at the time in general. There were no guides, no metas, no discord, no streamer culture.

There was thotbot. But majority of guilds and servers just played whatever they wanted. Today, everyone immediately looks at metas. I know I am right because I played from alpha until 2007 on multiple servers.

Mate, I raided all the way to Naxx 40 back in vanilla. They might not have been strictly enforced depending on your guild but metas were definitely a thing. DPS paladins weren't accepted anymore than tank or dps druid and the higher and you went the less odd specs like beastmaster hunter were.

              Anonymous

Why would you call it naxx 40 when it was only 40 man anyway bruh... i did it too. Notice how I said I played on multiple servers and most servers were how I said and yet here you are talking about playing on one in one guild. My point still stands. There is a reason why now every guild can blast through everything where as back then only so many did, because they didnt play meta. They just played

People didn't bother playing optimally but they still only played certain specs. And while it's been a long time I'm pretty sure dps meters were already a thing and people definitely used them to gauge individual performance. It might not have been the ultra autisticmodern version of metas where you're considered to be griefing unless you play a certain way but that's definitely a restriction on how people actually played the game.

Now imagine you were 15-25 years old in 2004-2005 after spending countless hours in Warcraft 3 and Blizz finally opened the gate to actually live in the 'world' of warcraft. Sprinting home from school, quickly going through your homework, sitting in front of a big ass CRT to play your lvl 15 char somewhere in Azeroth... You had to be there.

                Anonymous

You didn't even lose XP for dying in WoW, just repairs. That said, getting punished for dying is a shitty mechanic, the fact you died is already "punishment" enough.
And I say this as someone who back in the mid-2000s played Lineage 2 because WoW was too "casual" for a hardcore videogamer like me. If you died in that game, you'd lose hours worth of experience AND there was a chance to drop an item from your inventory/equipment.

Riot's MMO will very likely attempt to emulate all of that. Normally I fricking hate Riot, but I'm still praying that their MMO will be good, because it feels like one of the last chances of a WoW 2.0 happening.

I doubt it, my expectations are "Guild Wars 2 with good combat and trinity-style classes." So very casual open-world with events, a ton of voiced dialogues and cute little stories to discover. Overall pretty easy, no cooperation required. And then giga-hardcore M+ dungeons/raids for endgame, for people who are into that stuff.
Which is fine, it would be a fun videogame. I'd play it. But it's not going to revive the genre or anything.

THAT SAID, the owners are Everquest 1 giganerds ("Tryndamere" and "Ryze" were their Everquest characters). So who knows, maybe they'll do an actual old-school MMO.

Lineage 2 was relentless and tried to break you constantly which is why I prefer WoW but man...those dark elf females. I still have the poster that came with the game. I wish we had more stuff like that without resorting to Korean grinder shit like Tera or Black Desert.

I played on this setup back in 2007 lol and literally bought a Dell to have a better experience at the time on my first 17" LCD monitor. I can't even imagine having a 24" at that time. I def loaded up Classic for several months last year bc I wanted that nostalgia back.

What I mean is that there was only one way WoW could go, they were on a railroad when that game released.
It made them billions but it also made them lazy and greedy. They were literally printing money by shoving their players into grinding weeklies and collecting sub fees.
It's the same problem caused by lootboxes really, you reward bad behaviour from the companies and it becomes a cycle.

Halo is a easy game. It's only fun split screening with rl friends against pubs online because other than that it literally is almost a 1:1 type game play full of chance and auto-aim. People who are good at halo find themselves bad at other fps and the irony is that when I compare my own performance online in those other fps games I generally perform better than I do in Halo games (fighting against other players) even though I'm capable of winning some tournaments in Halo and I suspect that's because it's harder, by their own words, and so the potential ceiling for skill is much higher and I always reached those in fps even if it's rock, paper, and scissors level of game play. I guess what I'm trying to say is Halo is only good when played with rl friends but any other FPS game is better when played with rl friends, including tf2.

You could say the same of Candy Crush. If you're dumbing down a rather complex genre to sell it to office ladies and middle school kids you've certainly gone too far.

If that was true, everyone would only play candy crush clones which obviously isn't true, not even within the mobile "games" genre.
A newly released game becoming popular doesn't automatically destroy the fanbase of already established titles unless it's just that much of an upgrade over the previous games.

                >he honestly thinks WoW killed the competition
You're as moronic as the people who said TOR would kill WoW, neither of these things happened.
EQ and GW still have healthy servers, hell, FFXI and XIV have more players than WoW

                >he honestly thinks WoW killed the competition
The people I've been replying to certainly do and plenty of mmos that were popular at the time certainly saw an important dip in players after the release of wow with some just limping along. Kinda why you mention EQ but not EQ 2 or DaoC or Anarchy online and yes those games are still running but only because it cost peanuts to run servers for them.

It's essentially the same thing otherwise the old school mmos would still be striving. It's like complaining that smartphones killed the mobile phone industry.

No it isn't, because you're trying to argue WoW killed the competition or that it didn't attract just normalgays, your entire argument is flawed because you didn't think it through.

you act like MMOs are not dumbed down MUDs anyways
there is nothing about any MMO that has been released in the history of time that is remotely complex, even EVE is simplistic it's just boring

              >it'd still be in a healthy state player wise
I agree, no game needs to be the equivalent of being nothing but corn syrup and onions nutritionally to survive.
But corporations got into gaming and tried to make it about maximizing profit instead of making games, that's what brought us to where we are right now.
Vidya stopped being about gaming nerds making games for gaming nerds, and instead about code monkeys making porkslope like WoW and Halo for normalgays so people like Kotick can buy their 4th mansion.

WoW (at least original WoW) and Halo predate investor wiener sucking happened, even Wrath was in dev before Blizzard finalized their merger with Activision
but, you're a zoomer so you don't remember that because you were like, 10

The issue wasn't WoW, it was a good videogame. A very good videogame. The issue was everyone else who kept making WoW-clones trying to achieve the same success.
Just like it wasn't Resident Evil 4's fault if everyone started making third-person shooters all of a sudden.

South Park made it more popular actually. Game devs, shot callers, and investors simply have no integrity and if all they did was actually add content instead of modifying the current version of the game like some ammeatur modder because of "balance" and change for the sake of change it'd still be in a healthy state player wise. Instancing also helped start its downfall. Pics like OP's pic was common across multiple servers and happened often before instancing.

2.5 millions sub during vanilla was already a massive amount when mmos usually had sub counts in the 100 thousands.

Takes time for normies to afford the gear to be able to play the game. In the 2000s people tend to forget that the average person wasn't keeping up with tech and probably had pcs that couldn't run the game past 3 fps or just simply couldn't run it period. I didn't start playing the game until half a year passed from its release date because the previous mmorpg me and my friends were playing was on the PS2 and between them going back and forth between eqoa and WoW I kind of sat on my ass about getting better internet and a computer to play WoW because back then I'd make like $600 on average every two weeks and I still had bills to pay. This is why it took a while for WoW to grow in popularity. I know for a fact I wasn't the only one in this boat as well and out of my group of friends which was in the tens, many had to "upgrade" to even be able to play the game. The game was insanely popular before player counts showed it was and naturally if you're starting late the previous changes that upset the player base that was already there won't phase you until you spend several hundreds if not thousands of ours into the game and the devs simply decide to gut your class and Frankenstein it into a new one with the wearing the face of the previous class. People always quit over unjustified class changes but they kept it up along with bone-headed decision making like instancing. EQOA was better in this aspect because if you wanted to kill Lady Vox and there was another guild there you'd have to fight for it which added value to the game since fights of that magnitude always lead to an air of competition with stirred emotions.

The idea your numbers go bigger, along with grooming you into doing repetitive daily and weekly tasks.
They literally hired psychologists to make the game design more addictive, it's quite disgusting honestly.

Make it a routine so your brain is programmed to do it the same way you train your dog to shit in the yard.
It's something you only do to subhumans.
doing that to people just so you can charge them a subscription is outright immoral.
