Sure, but there's not much to talk about on a lot of those quite yet. The big bull boss they showed in that recent video for Wo Long looked pretty cool, but I hate how of all shitty journos they give the game to it's IGN who are even shittier than most. I don't know why they think those supercuts of random deaths are something anyone wants to see, doubly so since they play like morons to reach them. Anyway I hope the game turns out well, I have my issues but it's looking to be at least really fun, and we're long overdue another demo, especially for PS4.
I'm mainly looking forward to Stranger of Paradise's new DLC and frick you for leaving it out. Gun looks like it'll be fun.

Well to me that seems like a bullshit distinction to make. Especially since there's so little news on the other games so far. The tease of Rise of the Ronin did look good though and I'm curious how hard they'll go when it comes to the story and history as they said it was a pretty turbulent time and they want to bring that across.

We can easily talk about hopes, fears and expectations for those titles.
Regarding Rise of the Ronin, do you think it will follow the Way of the Samurai format?

            Anonymous

I can definitely see it adopting a similar method of time progression as Way of the Samurai, but as for the different factions and replaying factor that I'm not so sure about. I can see them wanting to keep everything in the one run and focusing on doing a single story path that may or may not switch sides, as that's what they're used to telling, and it might be the best way to bring across the era which Yasuda really wanted to focus on.

It's not going to flop but it woll be a disappointment
The main draw of Nioh weapons are their mechanical differences
Wo Long weapons aren't different AT ALL https://youtu.be/__I_dMosyco
They have samey hyperarmor on spirit attack and martial arts, and samey movesets.
Look, you never notice a difference between the two.

        Anonymous

The weapons are different, but in a micromanagement degree focusing more on having smaller overall movelists and a wide number of weapons with one or two different attacks in the normal string and a different set of potential Martial Arts.

Someone who played the demo go over our moveset and control setup. I didn't get to play it because no PS5. We have two skills set to triangle and square which look similar to how Nioh had two skills you could do while blocking. It also looks like there's a spirit attack and then four spells each that correspond to face buttons with their own modifier. So then we just have a light attack string and I'm assuming it's on square or did they move it up to the shoulder buttons? Do we have a heavy attack string or not? Do we know if there's a skill tree or if weapons have any other move-set aspects such as direction inputs during combos?

Square is a normal attack string, Triangle is Spirit Attack (burn all your blue spirit to do a heavy attack, is a different one when done after normal attacks), Circle is deflect with a doubletap being a larger dodge and X is jump, you have normal and Spirit attack in midair or can jump off enemies with X again.
L1 is guard but doesn't have any extra inputs from what I remember. Holding R1 gives you access to your weapon's Martial Arts on Square and Triangle, these depend on the individual equipped weapon, while R1+Circle is a flash attack that deflects. Both of these can also be chained into from normal and Spirit attacks. R2+face buttons are your selected Wizardry Spells, which are similar in use to Martial Arts and can be chained from attacks in the same way, and you can go between Martial Arts and Wizardry as well which is probably the main interesting part of creating offense. There's no directional inputs so far and they probably would've been in by now if they were a thing.

Are there any juggles in Wo Long? I remember an anon mentioning they were more prevalent than in Nioh.

There's a chance I was that anon, and I was talking about Stranger of Paradise when I was referring to juggles being more prevalent than Nioh. So far I've seen one Martial Art from Wo Long that was a launcher into spinning spear juggle in a trailer, and no others besides that so it's seeming less likely they'll be a thing. Which is unfortunate since hitstates are something the game needs.

          >hitstates are something the game needs.
I feel like Nioh, Nioh 2, SoP and Wo Long don't really ever manage to make hitstun/hitstates right.

            Anonymous

Nioh has quite a few but doesn't make use of them too often, though while they could have done a lot by putting more focus on them it doesn't need to because of how the combat is designed well around other methods. SoP has them much more present and it makes up well for the slightly lesser moveset list, and I was hoping Wo Long would follow suit as your movelist is even shorter comparatively, but I haven't seen much of that at all which is unfortunate.

I was curious about the wizardry spells and I could see them being used to form interesting chains with the martial arts and normal attacks. I do wonder if there will be "spells" that actually function more like melee attacks. Did the demo have full access to all the menus and stuff? Still curious to know if there's a skill tree or something similar. I'm assuming the weapon's full movesets will gradually expand as you progress.

If by melee attacks you mean actually forming weapons then those would be cool, but there's already a bunch of close range spells and they're very much aimed to be alongside Martial Arts and other attacks to keep your offense varied. Which would be well and good but Wizardry also consists of all the different buffs you can get and with only four slots and needing to take Morale into account for when you can use them, it's another place where the game can feel limiting.
I don't think there were access to all the menus, but the way the game's set up doesn't seem like it'll have much in the way of skill trees. I could easily be wrong, just I feel like if it was going to be in we would have seen it by now. Weapons most likely will "expand" by having more variety of Martial Arts that you can find on them, but that makes it more likely that you won't be able to choose the ones you want.

              Anonymous

Forming pure elemental weapons or just stuff like setting your weapon on fire then doing a forward lunge or whatever. Some spells could be long range projectiles, some could be short range frontal AoE like we've seen, just thinking there might be variation and different kinds. In Ninja Gaiden your weapons don't start with their full moveset unlocked and same with Nioh. That's kind of why I'm thinking there will be moveset upgrades as you progress. Or are martial arts strictly limited to the specific weapon you equip and not something you "set" like in Nioh? I guess we don't know yet if we haven't seen all the menus.

                Anonymous

That could be very cool, but there's already typical weapon buffs so it's a maybe on whether something like that will happen. At least there will be a wide variety either way judging just from how many were in already. I probably should have mentioned that one default fireblast spell since it both covers the short range melee niche and is one of the few cases of hitstates as it can cause the Nioh knockback.
                >Or are martial arts strictly limited to the specific weapon you equip and not something you "set" like in Nioh?
They're the first thing, it depends on the specific weapon you equip, you can see them in gameplay videos that it's on each one. To me an obvious method would be to have an extra input where you can set whichever Martial Art you want out of the ones you've learned, and you would learn them by using a weapon with that Martial Art for long enough, but there's been nothing like that, no hints or anything regarding any further moves, so anything else remains to be seen. It makes the later coverage a little unimportant honestly, all this gameplay footage just shows more or less what we already know, except that one confirmation of some kind of blacksmith, as if there wouldn't be one.

                Anonymous

Yeah, you might just end up forging the ones you want on the weapon you're using. It would be better if it were more flexible though and you could just set already learned ones on your weapon at no cost/whenever you want. I guess we'll find out how it works in time.

                Anonymous

It would be convenient being able to just change weapons to have the two you want (another thing I forgot to mention, low rarity weapons only get one), but with that being one of the main drives to get different weapons I feel like they won't want to make it that simple. More likely we'll have to hope there's enough weapons of each type to account for every Martial Art combination, and then we'll be able to forge whichever appropriate one that is.

I wouldn't say they look the same, they very clearly have different attack strings and skills. Until the full game is out, we're not really going to be able to get in depth about the finer differences between the weapons are. It looks like there's going to be a core set of shared mechanics between all weapons but that's no different than what Nioh does.

Ninja Gaiden Black is *the* game by them, even if you weren't around to play it on release its still an absolute essential piece of action gaming. If you don't have an Xbox you can play the Sigma version in the Master Collection.¨

All their other games are different degrees of good, but imo come with a bunch of caveats. NGB is their Ocarina of Time, it's when the stars aligned and they delivered a true gaming classic.

So the Sigma versions are alright after all? Should I grab the collection for 60$? I'm actually a fan of the retro NG games, I played the NES trilogy and the arcade game. And yeah I also need to try both Nioh games. Oh shit you know what else I played? Other M. So I think I got the worst Team Ninja game out of the way

          >So the Sigma versions are alright after all?

It's a controversial topic because the Sigma versions have additional content and are intended to be the "upgraded" versions, but they're not directed by Itagaki and go about making a bunch of changes that some people think are bad or unnecessary. But generally I would say.

Sigma 1: A PS3 remaster of the original Xbox game, generally considered a pretty good way to play the game. Updated visuals, new weapons, new playable character, a few controversal changes like removing puzzle/platforming sections.

Sigma 2: A PS3 port of an Xbox 360 game, almost universally considered a downgrade. Adds new things and fixes some balancing problems, but also removed almost all the gore and enemy crowds because the PS3 architecture was a piece of shit so they had to rework the game entirely.

Razor's Edge: A straight upgrade in every way because vanilla 3 was a complete piece of shit.

            Anonymous

The Sigma versions are equal to better overall, as they add significant content and graphical improvements while fixing issues with the previous games and making small to medium adjustments. S1 is an almost straight improvement, while 2 vs S2 is considered a stickler because due to many different reasons the game's encounter design basis was changed, but each game has strengths and flaws with their approach and S2 still adds onto its changes with additional content, so at most it means 2 is another game you can look into playing afterwards. Some very opinionated and persistent people flood forums and news outlets with their opinions rather than look at the distinctions, and ultimately you can't go wrong unless you play vanilla NG3, which is all but impossible now.

I kind of regret selling my X360 but oh well. Since NG1 is their most legendary game and Sigma 1 is good then I'll buy the collection, thanks

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection and the Niohs would bring you up to speed, the collection being a very convenient and great way if not the best way to get into that series while with Nioh you can start with either game, the first being a bit of a smoother intro but the second being overall a much more upgraded game. I would also firmly recommend Stranger of Paradise if you liked them.

I mean, I'm not necessarily opposed to it, it just makes the cover look really jank when you only have one like that instead of showing a wider variety of aesthetics.

I think it's actually the opposite. A lot of that game's cast would probably appeal more to Japan while the West would be all "Who?". Nioh meanwhile was pretty widely successful both in Japan and overseas so William's just a safer bet.

Most people making comparisons to Wo Long and Sekiro do so in a very ignorant manner due to seeing one base mechanic and don't really know much about either game. However I wouldn't say Wo Long is a different style of game from Nioh per say, even if it should be treated as a different game with a different approach. And if there is going to be an issue with the game, it's looking to be limited options at once in comparison to Nioh, and it doesn't look to be doing much to make up for that the way SoP did. Ultimately the main reasons to play the game compared to those look to be the jump button and how it impacts level design, along with PvP.

      >glaive, dagger-axe
      >spear, staff
      >axe
Then there's the ranged weapons, bow, crossbow and throwing daggers. The rope dagger is pretty much what it sounds like, a blade with a rope attached to it. There was a character in Dynasty Warriors who used it with a sword which was one of the more fun movesets so it could be cool.

Fists seem fairly likely considering the whole kung fu aesthetic, and they even put a little work into making the bare handed moveset look cool, so maybe that's telling that there's a proper fists weapon that uses and expands on that.
