Brother, MK has amazing graphics and it doesn't come close to reaching 20 million copies, even though in America it is a more recognizable brand than Tekken.
For Tekken to do as well as you want it needs to achieve critical acclaim of 90+ on metacritic, as well as be a very solid esports title, to keep it alive and sell over the years.
Meaning everything has to go right for it to achieve it, but everything can't go right.

Both DBZ and Tekken benefitted from countless capcom fans with no home, it only takes 1 try to realise there is no other home, everything else is even worse. If SF6 flops the entire genre is dead.

What the frick are you talking about, T3 sold 8 million copies and was the biggest fighting game cultural phenomenon since sf2. T5 sold 6 million copies and T6 close to 4 million.
          >SF 4 revived the genre

          >SF6 flops the entire genre is dead.

Thanks for plotting out all the data points and proving the series was in a death spiral. Nothing was special about T7 beyond the wider gaming landscape, every Tekken game is indistinguishable from the last. I personally think sf6 looks shit so I no longer have a dog in the fight.

Sf4 did much more than revive the competitive scene, it lead to a whole new round of fighting games getting greenlit and a fresh batch of players, this hadn't happened for many many years.

Tekken 5 literally sold 10 million copies just 2 years before SFIV "revived" the genre. And it didn't need 6 versions, 3 generations of console and 10 years of support to do that.

Damage is actually extremely high in Tekken 7. My biggest issue with the game easily. The fact that like everyone in the cast can easily do over 50% of your hp off one launcher is really gross. And over half the cast its closer to 70%. Why do you think high level players move like autistis and the game is so "slow" at high levels? The risk of eating a launcher is to great. I got tekken at nearly the same time as strive. And when my like 5th online game I took more of my hp pool in damage from one raven combo then being hit as Chipp in strive I knew something wasnt right.

          Anonymous

Bro I have no idea how you can do a 75% combo with Raven. Even with a optimal full carry + wall combo off of a big launcher you're only looking at ~90 damage (like 55%)

          Got a link?

            Anonymous

Nah happened to me more then a year ago. Though looking at a quick google search without rage a master raven can do over 110 damage which is ya know alot. With rage an optimal combo and wall breaks she can reach nearly 140 which is cute. More of just an example of high damage. Even further I dont really have issue with master raven at my current skill level shes not to bad. Hell I rarely see her. You can of course also just say that in your opinion the damage is fine but I dunno personally for me I prefer lower damage games.

Your fault for getting hit. Learn to poke, punish and move.

Sure here ya go. This was the one I saw as I typed that. Having a wall break and rage isnt the rarest thing in the game and I think the highest damaging combo I saw without rage is actually the one before which was 103.

                ?t=369
Highest damaging combo in the vid was 130 something near the end not sure if thats a max combo possible. Is there really no feasible way to make kbd look less stupid without messing with the functionality/execution? For anyone familiar with it, sure that's some next level mindgames going on there but to anyone else it looks like the game is glitching out, which doesn't go with the realistic aesthetics that they're gunning for with 8.

        Anonymous

Kbd is just a movement cancel, it looks the way it does because crouching takes 1 frame, which is good because if you see a low you need your character to crouch and block it as fast as possible after the input, or else the game feels unresponsive and slow.
Kbd works in the following way:
You backdash(input b b), then cancel that backdash into crouch(you can cancel backdash into any movement, crouch is just the most efficient way doing it), and after that you start the backdash from crouch, and there you have it, the backdash cancel, the advanced movement. Top players are simply doing it so fast and optimally, that it doesn't even look like they're crouching. Which is good because less frames you spend on crouching - safer your backdash it, and longer you keep the crouch on, more unsafe it is, obviously.
Crouching is db(downback), backdash is bb, the notation is the following:
        bb db b db b db b
You backdash once, and after that there is always a buffered b from the crouch d(b) input, so you need to press b only once starting from the first cancel.

        Hope this was digestive.

I hope they're going to revamp this awful customization system. There's a single thing that looked good other than the regular costumes in all the Tekkens that allow that.

      Anonymous

They need to bring back T6 customization where you could equip individual parts like gloves/arms instead of binary tops/bottoms and merge it with Tag 2's custom decals and hair customization.

Also have no fricking idea why they never bothered selling classic costume DLC packs for T7 when the only reason the modding community even exists for T7 is to add classic costumes back in. Costume packs would honestly probably outsell the Season Passes.

It may seem like a small improvement but the hit sounds are so much meatier. It doesn't sound like you're punching a garbage can anymore.

There's a lot of little details that are really cool like new animations for blocking, pushbacks, knockdowns, stuns etc. and I really like that Jin's voice clips have finally been updated, too. Kazuya's are still the same unfortunately. But so far it seems like the biggest change since Tekken 5.

Harada already said in the IGN interview that they're gonna go the SFV route with paid costumes and drop customization as we've known it entirely. Tekken customization items were always ugly so I'll take costumes designed by actual artists over it any day.

No, he said he envied other fighting game devs because they never opened up the pandora's box of character customization like Tekken/Soulcalibur did, so they don't need to adhere to those expectations.

It looks a lot better than 7 but I'm concerned that they're still using Unreal Engine and not the proprietary Namco engine currently in development. But I guess they want to get the game out sooner.

Body proportions on Jin and Kazuya look just as ridiculous as 7 (wish they would go back to leaner T4/T5 style) and Kazuya seems to have that same soulless look in his eyes as the characters in 7 did, too. The (admittedly excellent) effects like the rain/particles/sweat/etc obscure the true quality of the graphics.

Curious how the load times will be this time and if they can get Mokujin working on UE5 or not.

        >T7 reached 10 million copies in 5 years and Tekken as a series was DOA poverty tier when 7 launched
It was the best selling fighting game franchise before 7 released, before Moral Kombat outpaced it. Are you actually fricking moronic?

          Anonymous

The franchise was in a bad state because Tag 2 sold like shit and the optics for fighting games at the time wasn't looking good. Arcades being dead in the west/dying in Asia etc.

Thankfully more devs are embracing good netcode which is all fighting games needed to enter the mainstream again.

            Anonymous

Tag2 actually had an amazing netcode for when it released, people made videos saying it pushed the envelope.
            But:

            Didn't 6 sell like ass? Didn't tag2 sell even worse? Didn't 4 flop comparatively to 3?

Tag2 wasn't a mainline tekken release, those never sell as well as mainline tekken games do. We don't actually know how well Tag2 sold in its lifetimes, but iirc before TR(Tekken revolution, free to play game) was released it reached 1.7million copies, with TR it got a bump, but Namco never told us its lifetimes sales, the 1.7 happened during its first 6-7 months before TR.
Tk6 ~4 million copies its lifetime probably, probably more actually, because we know officially that before TTT2 released(Sep 2012), Tekken 6 as of may 2011 sold 3.5 million copies.
4 million copies for a mainline tekken game is not good, considering t3 sold 8 million, and t5 sold 6.5, or 8+ if we take dark resurrection too.
As a franchise before MK started coming back, at ~2013 times, tekken was the best selling fighting game.

              >Tag2 wasn't a mainline tekken release, those never sell as well as mainline tekken games do
Tag 1 sold incredibly well. Tag 2 just come out at the wrong time when interest in the series was at an all time low and people who were interested in fighting games were busy playing SFIV.

                >Tag 1 sold incredibly well
No it didn't. It sold, 2.3 million copies as far we they told us, even though it was the next game after Tekken 3, which sold 8 million copies, which makes it 5th best selling video game on ps1, meaning one of the most popular video games that generation, not just fighting games. Even with all that hype Tag1 only sold 2.3 million copies. For another example Tekken 2 sold 6 million copies.

Been using this on Mishima's for about a year and it's pretty broken. Sidestep electrics basically never whiff, electrics as a whole almost never whiff. If they don't disable double input mapping for Tekken 8 it's going to be a very fun launch cycle.

None of this will matter if there aren't a ton of single player features for normies and casuals to keep them hooked into the game, hell most won't even touch competitive.

I hope they actually give new players better tools to learn the game faster, maybe trim some of the bloated movelists a bit since there's a lot of gimmicks and bad options new players shouldn't even use. The scene needs new blood poured into it.

Exactly my point, Tag1 and Tag2 both didn't sell well, or well AS well as mainline games. For a Tekken game 2 million copies is a failure, even though for a game like Guilty Gear 1 million is a massive success.

No one can see how underwhelming this game will be as a video game except me.

It's fine if you like playing Tekken--I certainly do--but in terms of paying for a robust video game this is going to fall on its face because the devs are more interested in getting your money for more characters than making a full package.

Tekken 7 ain't nothing special for the series. Older games never had post launch support, DLC or PC ports, that's why T7 sold so much. Not to mention that selling 10M copies is the norm now compared to the 90's and 00's.
    Tekken is just that popular.

It's been years, it's the current gen now. And the game will probably release 2023 fall or, 2024 spring. In ~2 years it will definitely be the norm to have games only on current gen.
I believe Sf6 is doing a mistake to release it cross-gen, unless they intent to release separate update installments afterwards.

I find Tekken to be the worst fighting game series I ever played, and Tekken 7 to be one of the worst game fighting game I ever played
I'm learning T7 for like 2 week, and despite it being so trash, so terrible, there is something about the game that makes me keep going
It's probably trash and uniquely trash it is, and how unmemorable the characters are outside heihachi who is the only kino character of this series with maybe Lee

I hope they tone down the roster a bit. At the end of t7's dlc it looked like a complete clusterfrick freak show. Please no more Negan, FF and that shit. Back to basics with some new blood thrown in.

I'd say Tifa and Kiryu are pretty likely to make it, though maybe as DLC rather than base roster. Bamco seemed eager to keep doing guest characters and those two are probably the most requested ones.

Semi-related question: do people dislike Kuni in Tekken 7? I just started learning her and people have been rude to me and I don't know why. They're never rude when I play Josie or Kazumi either, just Kuni

I want ankle jabbing juggles to stop. It looks bad. There needs to be much stricter physics on second and third re-launches of a falling opponent. Jabbing an ankle should not produce an upward bounce. It's stoopid.

I lost all interest in Tekken when 7 came out:
    >smaller roster than Tag 2
    >looks worse than ever; character models are weird and janky, all of the females caught sameface, FX out the ass, awful custom character pieces that don't deform nicely to different bodies making everything look like it's made of foam, base character designs are mostly cluttered and messy as hell with shiny detailing and noclip hair/belts hanging off multiple characters
    >just an ugly, weak aesthetic overall
    >rage arts super move bullshit in a series that was unique for not having super moves
    >fighting game community becomes so insular and high level that there's a gigantic skill gulf for online play
    >this overly loyal market is the reason they turn the game into a "seasonal" experience/nickel and dime players for their favourite characters as DLC. To get the full game you have to pay well over 100 bucks even years after release
    >no fun bonus modes in the base game
    >OST is a whole lot of wub and Mick Gordon (not to my taste personally)
    >doubles down on Mishimashit plotline instead of expanding it out. Is there even a fighting tournament in this one?

      Anonymous

Half your complaints are about the visuals which they already showed they're putting more effort into.

I don't mind Rage Arts, only noobs use them and I can understand why they'd want characters to have at least one cool cutscene move (even if 80% are fricking boring as hell)
Rage itself is a fun mechanic

The rest is just a budget issue which they likely won't have this time either. OST from the trailer seems a bit more video-game-y again which is a good thing. I don't disagree it's just that I can see why things turned out the way they did and I have hopes they won't have the same problems this time. They seem to be hyping this up and putting budget into it.

Tekken 7 came right after Tag 2, which had a bunch of budget and effort put into it, flopped hard.
Tekken 7 has had gangbusters lifetime sales and hype is as high as ever. It's all speculation but it's clear they're betting a lot on this one.

TTT2 is a spinoff and didn't even had a story mode. IT was never meant to sell like a main Tekken. It's the lack of DLC in T6 and TTT2 that lowered the resources invested.

        Anonymous

I am hoping that the final game looks like that trailer, but yeah, I just find Tekken 7 ugly as frick on multiple levels. Even if the way it's rendered and modelled in 8 is better, I'm a bit wary that the actual designs themselves are going to be a lot of straps and weird shiny polyester/velvet clothes with tonnes of detailing again. Just because you CAN have all of those details doesn't mean you should.

Likewise, even then, if they include the same kind of character customisation again there's really no way to make that look good. I'd much rather they just give every character a hand made extra costume or two rather than a bunch of badly deformed shirt types across all characters.

Ever since I began lifting I've been noticing how many roided up dudes there are in video games. I think it is absolutely moronic we have to put up with holes whining about big breasts and hot b***hes which are perfectly natural and do exist in the world while simultaneously parading in front of young boys and men an image that is never achievable without the abuse of performance enhancing drugs. I would like to look like a Tekken character but as a natty I can't. Just one more reason to hate holes. They want to have it all.

why does tekken still have that autistic fake 3d movement where you have to learn kbd, breaking animations, to be viable? Soul calibur already perfected the 3d movement with 8wayrun. They should do that game justice and actually implement the good things it did instead of just keep piling shit in a game that did not improve since tekken 3. Frick legacy skill, it's getting too much, need to trim down the fat a little

The movement in Tekken requires skills. SC doesn't.
lol Tekken is the ONLY fighting game with a tier list for the sidestep. That's how deep the gameplay is.
