Genre almost as bad as fighting games

  3. 2 years ago

It depends entirely on the game in question. The only constant is that the genre puts gameplay first and the gameplay primarily revolves around simple controls and tight execution.

my only peeve about them is that most of them give you no reason to actually let go of the fire button except in times where rapid fire only allows so many shots on screen at once to cause a lag in shots at probably undesirable times
otherwise it's just a common pitfall in design of these kinds of games that i'm not really a fan of and would be easily mitigated by having autofire set meaning all you really need to do is work the dpad/stick

      Anonymous

I can agree with that. A lot of games have charge attacks from holding the shot button instead of tapping it, but it'd probably be better to have that charge work by just not pressing the shot button at all.

cave does a pretty good job with fire modes imo

Spiritual sequel/successor, but completely different scoring system/ gameplay mechanics.

A handful of modern shmups actually address this, by letting you invert the fire key so that holding it stops your fire instead of starting it. IMO every shmup should include that option.
But yeah, it's annoying, though it's not too hard to resolve on your own. I have an Autohotkey script that infinitely mashes Z when Numlock is active and it works nicely.

My favorite is Reflex because it doesn't actually do that, granted there's a shield that invalidates most moves (except for missiles, which are spammed decently often so you can't rely on the shield forever) but the game is built around using it to reflect shots back at the enemy, needlessly spamming attack slows your shield recharge down to a crawl so sometimes it's actually better to hold off and let it charge up so you can either tank through an otherwise undodgable attack or deal greater damage than usual by reflecting multihit lasers.
It's pretty neat, now if only I wasn't garbage at it, my skills in shmups are genuine trash

There's like 10 iconic ones and a sea of shitty ones.
Just play Ikaruga, Jamestown, crimson clover, and every shmup that was on the NES, SNES, or Genesis that looks like it's set in the future or is quirky and Japanese and you've played all the best ones

    >The Virgin Japanese Shmup
    -autistic and obsessive
    -one hit and you're dead
-lucky to get five different weapon types
    -designed to eat quarters
    -linear from start to end
-if 'Congratulations' is spelled in proper English it's an above-average ending sequence
    -primarily praised for its soundtrack
-player has to constantly defend himself against accusations of cheating or be ostracized from the fanbase
    >The Chad Tyrian
    -plays for fun
-big fat HP, shield, AND armor bars
-virtually unlimited combinations of weapon upgrades
-free as in beer AND freedom
-also has a secret beer minigame and non-linear gameplay elements
-pages and pages of in-game lore, deep compelling storyline with dozens of characters
-the Alexander Brandon soundtrack isn't even the most notable aspect
-so easy that no one doubts the player when he claims to have beaten it

Literally a downside. True shmup players are fine with "3 lives, no continues, YOLO"
      >-so easy that no one doubts the player when he claims to have beaten it
Also literally a downside. Who plays shmups that are easy? That's why Bullet Soul and Thunder Force 6 fricking sucked.

      >G
      >Use the alpha beams. The game gives you plenty of purple orbs, and it's also important to score well.
      >Beam counters are essential to quickly kill bosses. Otherwise they take forever to die. If you want to play for score though, you want to drag out the bosses for as long as possible.
      >always make sure to capture an enemy. They're good as both additional firepower as well as a meatshield to protect your shield.
      >as for stage selection, top stages=easiest, bottom stages=hardest.
It's a really fun game when it clicks. I also had trouble at first since it feels pretty weird when you don't know what you're doing.

It is not for everyone. Easy difficulty is good to get into but everything will be the same. There is a lot of difference between how you approach different patterns on higher difficulties. Some of them also have (multiples) gimmicks.

      how is the ost?

        Anonymous

it's by Yousuke Yasui, who also did the music for Mamoru-kun Curse!, which you may or may not be familiar with.

the kind of synth he uses in his music is unmistakable. ESCHATOS is already good mechanically but Yasui's music makes the experience and learning grind so much better.
