How do people do melee builds for boss fights? Unless the weapon has some kind of projectile on expert or master mode it almost seems impossible. I get summoners and whips, but normal melee seems like suicide.
I just got this game and played it for the first time yesterday. I ragequit at first, but then I started playing again, got a new random weapon and was able to destroy the zombies that made me ragequit with ease. I built a little house with a table and some decor, and now I'm mining for more iron so I can make better tools.
The first few hours generally give a pretty poor impression of the game compared to what's to come. I may just be a strong point, because it'll most likely exceed your expectations several times over, and it's very content dense.
The very early game is very tedious and just about anything can kill you. Once you get some more mobility and better weapons you're gonna be set for success and less tedium

You get to enjoy a bit many things that you later discover as useless and will skip in every other run.

Dig down until the background changes to shit brown. Pay attention to the background. This is your biome. In the dirt brown and eventually stone underground biomes you can find golden chests which will give your first movement accessories. Good luck and remember to click all the random shit you find into the guide.
You can show the guide materials and he will show you what can be made with them and also what crafting benches you require to make em.
Try and figure out how to make a watch, so you can keep track of time while underground.

anything that doesn't transmute into another thing will break down.
you can find out some recipes like that, such as a magic mirror has 2 crafting recipes if you cannot find one naturally.
You basically can't do anything interesting/worthwhile until you have a hook, a few movement items that give speed and double jump, and weapons+armor capable of taking on brain/eater. It takes far too much effort and/or luck to acquire all these and I don't blame people for having quit or refunded because of the early game drag.
The saddest part is once you are rolling you gain terminal velocity and never really slow unless you intentionally gimp yourself. The progression is totally unbalanced, it's like 5% rolling a boulder up to a cliff's edge 95% watching it fall.
Warding unless you're a summoner or maybe mage. The bonus damage is usually only relevant in bosses, since you tend to overkill mobs anyway. Also it's not that noticeable because of how much bonus damage lategame armors already give you. Warding is always helpful, but if you're a summoner, taking 200 damage per hit or 180 damage per hit doesn't make that much of a difference, since you die in the same amount of hits. Mage arguably also has low enough defense for warding to not be relevant, but mages have the best healing with stuff like spectre hood and nebula armor (not including the five minutes where vampire knives are useable on bosses), so they might actually benefit from the extra defense.
Melee obviously needs all the defense it can get and ranger is better off making its gameplay even more braindead than forcing itself to actually play the game for a small damage buff.
Can you think of what the optimal setup would be if you had several mods that added accessories to combine but you could still reach from the tinkerer bench, but they also added all these ores/enemy drops you needed access to a few other crafting stations? while still having containers for all your armors for fargos mod?
Is it a permanent upgrade like the shimmer items or is it a temp buff?

Yeah, the only time I've ever been pissed off was when the Sandstorm in a Bottle wasn't in my world, so I had to make 7 more to finally get it
What I do is usually build a bunch of temporary commie blocks and move a bunch of NPCs there until mobs stop spawning naturally (outside of events). This works unless you're doing something grand like build shit that covers the entire sky or something. That or just get powerful enough until they become mild nuisances I guess
Get Calming potions, a Peace Candle and/or a Sunflower to lower spawns.
OR
Build a small jail cell for a couple of NPCs to make a town, that should make enemies stop spawning.
ALSO
Wyverns can't spawn if you are standing in front of a player-placed wall.
Use some beams or blocks(actuated) to make that house on the left look more supported. You could even go with some cloud blocks under the base of it as well.
Also add some windows(glass, fence, etc.) into some of the rooms throughout your build. That herb farm could use some fences/various leaf walls for some more color to fill in the empty space.
Along with some more decoration as you finish it, and probably making that storage area more appealing, I'd give it a solid 8.5, maybe 9/10.

in 1.3 it would alert me every time a character picked up a new item, give me a %, and it had a hotkey to bring up a menu so you could see what you were missing. i just got my first light pet and it didn't signal me and there's no option to hotkey a list

I don't know how anyone can play on a world other than large. I love the idea of having a humongous world that I could possibly never explore in its entirety. The daunting nature of it is so compelling, but because of how Terraria handles exploration, it never bores me. Small and medium don't give me that feeling. It's like I've only got a limited amount to toy with.

Been slowly playing a new reverse seed map. Managed to explore above ground after getting hellstone armor. Was really surprised at the "living" wood trees. Some spots in the center of the world count as ocean, most easily noticed by the ocean critters that spawn near them. The regular oceans exist too but are corrupted.

The reason why you can't build is because you dont know how certain blocks mesh with walls and placeable decorations.
Get into a Journey playthrough and grind/cheat as many blocks as you want, then check what you like and what you dont like.
Remember to use paint and to style your blocks with the hammer.

You basically can't do anything interesting/worthwhile until you have a hook, a few movement items that give speed and double jump, and weapons+armor capable of taking on brain/eater. It takes far too much effort and/or luck to acquire all these and I don't blame people for having quit or refunded because of the early game drag.
The saddest part is once you are rolling you gain terminal velocity and never really slow unless you intentionally gimp yourself. The progression is totally unbalanced, it's like 5% rolling a boulder up to a cliff's edge 95% watching it fall.

Warding or Menacing lads?
Warding unless you're a summoner or maybe mage. The bonus damage is usually only relevant in bosses, since you tend to overkill mobs anyway. Also it's not that noticeable because of how much bonus damage lategame armors already give you. Warding is always helpful, but if you're a summoner, taking 200 damage per hit or 180 damage per hit doesn't make that much of a difference, since you die in the same amount of hits. Mage arguably also has low enough defense for warding to not be relevant, but mages have the best healing with stuff like spectre hood and nebula armor (not including the five minutes where vampire knives are useable on bosses), so they might actually benefit from the extra defense.
Melee obviously needs all the defense it can get and ranger is better off making its gameplay even more braindead than forcing itself to actually play the game for a small damage buff.
Is it just me or did 1.4.4 increase drop rates by tenfold?
Can you think of what the optimal setup would be if you had several mods that added accessories to combine but you could still reach from the tinkerer bench, but they also added all these ores/enemy drops you needed access to a few other crafting stations? while still having containers for all your armors for fargos mod?

What I do is usually build a bunch of temporary commie blocks and move a bunch of NPCs there until mobs stop spawning naturally (outside of events). This works unless you're doing something grand like build shit that covers the entire sky or something. That or just get powerful enough until they become mild nuisances I guess
Get Calming potions, a Peace Candle and/or a Sunflower to lower spawns.
OR
Build a small jail cell for a couple of NPCs to make a town, that should make enemies stop spawning.
ALSO
Wyverns can't spawn if you are standing in front of a player-placed wall.

Floating Chinaman house is jarring; make pillars/stilts holding it up out of background tiles
Use some beams or blocks(actuated) to make that house on the left look more supported. You could even go with some cloud blocks under the base of it as well.
Also add some windows(glass, fence, etc.) into some of the rooms throughout your build. That herb farm could use some fences/various leaf walls for some more color to fill in the empty space.
Along with some more decoration as you finish it, and probably making that storage area more appealing, I'd give it a solid 8.5, maybe 9/10.

apparently you can't buy purifying powder or the clementor so it would be difficult to do so. But other than needed to clear the corruption I don't see why you couldn't.
Some spots in the center of the world count as ocean, most easily noticed by the ocean critters that spawn near them. The regular oceans exist too but are corrupted.

The reason why you can't build is because you dont know how certain blocks mesh with walls and placeable decorations.
Get into a Journey playthrough and grind/cheat as many blocks as you want, then check what you like and what you dont like.
Remember to use paint and to style your blocks with the hammer.

Journey on Master difficulty with the For the Worthy seed is actually the highest difficulty in the game because of how scaling is calculated
The only thing that make Journey easier is all those god mode option.
If you set the difficulty to hard an only use it to clone items once you get em it' barely different (but the grind for common materials is heavily reduced)
and it's fun to get all the item you find in a catalog without needing any mod
