Bingo. Most of the screenshots you see of Elden Ring are the same cliffside view over the lake as in the OP. Yes, it looks fricking amazing. What is actually down there though in that Limgrave sized misty expanse?

      >knee high water (so more of a large shallow swamp than a lake)

Mod fixes glaring flaws the game suffers including using magic buffs on any sword as it should be as well as tweaks to certain areas and shit tanimura hitboxes . Also spells that do low damage but regain mana as a mage so you can have a real mage build rather than some hybrid shit. Same guy that modded and fixed ds2. Liurnia was where I started getting worried. That money shot after Godrick got me really excited, but then I discovered that it's really a massive swamp with next to nothing to do. So disappointing.
The game suffers from being this big. It felt like it had given almost everything it had to offer after the first forty hours and then it continued for another sixty. Way too much recycling.

          Anonymous

this is something I actually fricking loved about ER; there are basically no obligatory swamps because you have the horse

other than a few optional dungeons with some sewer water shenanigans, all the big overworld swamps like liurnia, aeonia, are no problem at all.

and lake of rot isn't even that bad because they literally give you all the platforms to stand on AND by the time you get there it is very unlikely that you would have missed that flame cleanse me thing which is both cheap to cast and doesn't have stupid high reqs to use AND you can always do the 0sp dagger quickstep thing for rapid traversal too.

ER truly 'has it's cake and eats it too' with giving you some big ass intimidating looking swamps, but not making you need to cope with their bullshit like in previous games

      Anonymous

This exactly. Its not a good thing when I exclaim aloud, multiple discreet times
      >Its still fricking GOING????
And of course - and this is something that happens with 90% of froms games - the last half or so of the game is a fricking slog, because they HAVE to up the ante. But oh, they've already ramped up the challenges so far, like off the shoulders of the previous game's difficulty curve, so by the second half they just through boring, lazy gank bosses or giant AoEs with nonexistent tells (until you eat one of course, then you know) or all other manner of bullshit they've held back from doing in their other games because they are terrible, filler ideas.

The wonder and sense of adventure completely disappears when you realize you have to now run circles around this entire area looking for cave entrances to copypaste dungeons and NPCs. As cool as it looks, overworld exploration is not fun in this game.

Of all the games randomly generated dungeons would have made perfect sense, I would have expected ER to have them.
It's kind of sad I found myself longing for a cursed, defiled chalice dungeon to clear, over the disappointing shit in ER

Yet it is the most essential point to ruining any sense of "adventure".

An adventure is something you have to commit to. Can you imagine the Hobbit or LotR where the protagonists could just teleport back and forth to previously visited locations at any time?

Developers understood this since games like Gen 1 Pokemon. From Software understood it in DS1. Obviously they chickened out because they realised the moron normalgay audience expects "convenience".

Good thing that the game has a fix for this problem.
              Dont allow yourself to teleport.

              There, fixed.

Also, if the game didnt have fast travel youd complain its too bloated and has too much backtracking.

I struggled playing it my first time, I just wasn't enjoying it. It was fun when I started playing it through with my friend though.

Teleportation sucks, it really takes you out the world imo. Imagine if you could just teleport out of blight town at any moment for an example, nobody would give a shit about it. Now apply that to the entire game and you've lost so much soul. Imagine being lost and trapped in the middle of the hell pit that is Caelid. It would be such a memorable experience. But that'll never happen because you die once and you can just teleport out again.

        Valid Criticism:
Rushed, half complete game. (Had to patch in quests)
        Several incomplete questlines still remain.
        Lazy Copy-Pasted "Chalice Dungeons"
Horrible gameplay balance, (Jumping heavys are overpowered STILL)
        Mass Effect 3 tier endings.
Outside of Ranni, every other ending is half-assed.
More cut content than any of the other From Soft games combined.
Worst PvP balance in franchise, even below BB
        Worst networking/invading system
Another open world aka 99% void empty land with copy pasted enemies and 1% interesting content

What ER does well is your first playthrough, the OST, the visuals, and the set building. The story is quite interesting until the halfway point where everything that isn't Ranni is left unfinished; and the dissapointment of knowing half the NPCs you meet don't have their questlines finished sour the entire game. Yes they patched in Nephelli, Gostoc, Alexanders, Diallos, and Kenneth's ending but not until several months after the game came out.

Game needed at least another year in development.

A good few points here but
          >Lazy Copy-Pasted "Chalice Dungeons"
I actually enjoyed the dungeons most have some kind of twist to separate them from the others, a much better implementation than Blood Borne's.
          >Horrible gameplay balance, (Jumping heavys are overpowered STILL)
Jumping heavies are strong but require more commitment.
I agree they are strong against most mobs but with bosses, you don't have as much safe openings for them when compared to other attacks.
Like with Godfrey I could jump light attack safely but not jump heavy over his quick stomps in phase 1.
          >Outside of Ranni, every other ending is half-assed.
Outside of Ranni and flame of frenzy.
          >More cut content than any of the other From Soft games combined.
I don't see how cut content as a criticism differs from saying the game is incomplete.
Content being cut doesn't make a game bad on its own.
          >Another open world aka 99% void empty land with copy-pasted enemies and 1% interesting content
I disagree I found most of the world to be enjoyable to explore so those percentages are more of an opinion.

      >Valid Criticism
Sure some gets drowned out but there's plenty of empty criticism coming off from people who clearly just wanted a different game.
Some people acted as if ER wouldn't be working on the base DS but bigger despite being shown outright what the game was like in the network test.
Or people outright lying in saying that you need to dodge for ages when any video shows plenty of openings.

This, I just wanted to join a covenant like Rykard’s or Mohg’s. Why the FRICK did they both give me an invitation to meet them just to fight me?? Why do they automatically think I’m their enemy if THEY specifically gave me an audience to meet them ? Tanith told me to go see her lord, varre gave me an invitation to meet his, did their lords not get the memo? Why does Varre invade me thinking I’m going to kill his lord when he himself gave me an audience and thinks I am just like him because I killed my fellow tarnished through invasion?

The nonstory is a huge flaw of the game and of all dark soul games. It’s not fun to experience the game again because it doesn’t have a beat or life to the story, you only play it if you want to fight a boss again or use a different build or something but the big game world doesn’t justify itself after you’ve explored it once so you quit a quarter way into limgrave because of how boring it is

The more I remember Elden ring the more I want a next game but with majorly overhauled combat. I want an even more apeshit bosses but give me combat to match them where I can combo my attacks without it becoming a fully slasher one. Also I’ve spend nearly 200 hours looting 90% of all loot and helping my friend do bosses. I might be moronic but the point is next time make game shorter by 20%, just cut out repeating catacombs, shit trees and bunch of other things that just there to fill the space the game is already big enough without them.

There's no dynamic scaling for the game's content so there's really no other way to do it, same thing as all other FROM games, and really most games in general.
The only games that allow you to start in different parts of the world are those that have some sort of adjustment for the world's content, which would be a great thing for ER but considering the kind of game it is it would have taken years and years to create on top of just coming up with the basic content.

This, pretty much everything that has been released so far has been "meh" or downright broken/bad and I'm not holding out hope for the rest of the year. This is the year that has proven to a lot of people that AAA vidya is nothing but a shitty time and moneysink for people with more money than brains since the only decent releases we've had this year has been indie shit and ERm which says more about the industry than it says about the games

I started noticing red flags even during Limgrave when:
    >90% of drops I was getting from exploration were garbage, a 180 from dark souls when they were usually good
    >die in 2-3 hits to most enemies for no reason
    >jumping attacks are clearly OP
    >game expects you to heavily pump stats or exploit weaknesses if you don't want to do chip damage
    >game seems balanced around ashes for some reason
    >too easy to flee from encounters/teleport anywhere which makes the open world redundant

No they aren't. And the drops you get in Souls games are laid out pretty much on your path through the game. You turn a corner and pick up an item you don't need it's no big deal. You spend 20 minutes doing catacomb #12 in some bum frick corner of an empty open world you spent 15 minutes getting to, and it's another item you dont need it pisses you off.

          Anonymous

          >No they aren't.
You clearly haven't played any Souls game then since 90% of the item pickups have always been useless fodder, which is something carried straight from King's Field too for the records, let's not pretend you can't run through enemies in Souls games either.
          >the drops you get in Souls games are laid out pretty much on your path
Ok so you like brainless linear corridors.
          >and it's another item you dont need it pisses you off.
Same exact thing as Souls, why are you "people" trying to correct the records so hard?
          It's honestly embarassing.

I'm not wasting my time with repetitive filler content only to get an item I don't need more often than not in Dark Souls. So no I don't get upset when a soul spear is in a corner of a level that I don't need because i'm there to do the level. But the catacombs instead are all about the reward at the end of them.

Sounds like the problem is in your head then. Don't do the content you dislike doing, why are you even concerned with loot in a Souls game, it's not an MMO. I wish I could skip the levels I dislike in Souls games but it doesn't even give me an option to do so.

That's right, so the precious loot you pick up at the end of the game will be good for an hour at best. I sure loved doing my Artorias build where I had to go to fricking Anor Londo to even have a chance to create the weapon I wanted to play with (while investing precious titanite into a broken sword I wasn't even using for my gameplay), and then it was good for just the remaining six hours of the game. Now that's itemization done right.

This is a thing in every From game. The difference that you don't need to play 100hrs grinding caves/mines in hopes that you find something you like.
Getting to Anor Londo is a fricking joke compared to getting to Farum to kill Maliketh and start a Death build when the game is like 2-3 boss fights from being over

And if the cave I need to go to in the Moutaintops, that's like long fricking trek just for 1 item.
Knowing which caves are worth your time is not a problem on subsequent playthroughs when you've already succumbed to using wikis, but for a first playthrough it was fricking awful.

                >you don't need to play 100hrs grinding caves/mines in hopes that you find something you like.
You don't have to do that in Elden Ring either.

You most certainly do on your first playthrough if you're looking for something fun or don't use a wiki

The Artorias build example was used originally, first playthroughs are irrelevant in discussion. How the frick would anyone know to upgrade a broken straight sword to ascend it on their first play through? You can get to Mountaintops in a few hours easily, just kill Morgott ffs.

Making your Artorias build is still much quicker than running through the open world from boss to boss, whilst getting almost no upgrade mats or runes to level up.

Why are you worried about what caves are and aren’t good are your first play though? Did the thought ever cross your mind that you should just play the game? You need to plan out a build for a game you’re playing for the first time? What’s wrong with you?

Because I was looking for a fun weapon or some cool armour you idiot. Customisation is half the fun in these fricking games and you know it.

What are "fun" things for you and which cave do you find them in? Come on, give a few examples. And naturally if you target specific items it's not your first playthrough and you are using a wiki.

                Anonymous

I wasn't targeting anything you idiot, why do you think I was grinding caves? Ironically my favourite weapon was the Banished Knight GS because it had the Mirrah GS movement. Only reason I even found it was because some anon posted a webm of him using it. And only the way to get it was to farm mobs like I was playing a fricking MMO. Second favourite weapon was Eleonora's Twinblade, since I managed to stumble my way through Yura's quest. All that fricking time wasted grinding caves, all because From is still making players grind mobs, dumb shit moronic devs.

                >Making your Artorias build is still much quicker
It's not quicker relative to the game's overall length and making the build is not the same as playing it.

Yes it is. Anor Londo's equivalent in ER would be Leyndell. You finished your Artorias build with half the game left. I finish my Death build with 10% of the game left.

                >You finished your Artorias build with half the game left.
Only I also had to farm titanite, clear O&S and half the DLC right after that at the earliest, which I had to get out of my way to do. And as I said, it still leaves less than ten hours of gameplay before I finish the game and put it down. If we assume you're coming in just as prepared for that Death build, you could get it done before you even touch some of the areas as well, and this is a pre-DLC game. You have more hours left playing the game and enjoying your build.

                Anonymous

Yeah I have more time to enjoy my build because ER is naturally a bigger game. At the same time it takes me much longer to to Farum, then I have to grind levels, get bell bearings or grind upgrade mats. Then I also have to pray that whatever armour I choose to use doesn't come from random mob drops.

No gayshit i'm not "obsessed" with collecting loot I'm correcting an issue that you wanna pretend is no real issue at all. Acting like it's the same thing with all the souls games. If, for example, you're in Sens Fortress picking up an item you don't need. I'm not in Sens Fortress to pick up loot with the goal of getting a reward at the end. There aren't 35+ different Sens Fortresses' that all look and play the same. It's not my fault the game is mostly repetitive filler content. Don't blame me I didn't make the fricking game. If all these catacombs were just good levels in and of themselves I would do them for the fun of the exploration and challenge. But they aren't. Their only worth is just the reward at the end of them so when it's 90% worthless it's a waste of time and a big problem that doesn't get handwaved away with "lul just dont do it."

Well that was easy, all I had to do was not have loot-chasing mindset. And the best thing about it, Sen's Fortress takes as much time to complete as a regular catacomb in Elden Ring. Given the opportunity you'd skip Sen's Fortress on every consecutive runs, you just don't have the opportunity to do so. Now why are you acting like you're obligated to complete catacombs? What are you in the catacombs for if it's not to get loot? Their samey repetitive level design? Their combat you can do anywhere else? Difference being you aren't in Sens Fortress to get loot. If you're in catacomb #27 for any other reason your brain is atrophied and you probably aren't all there. Which I wouldn't blame you after like 65 hours of this game.
                >"Just dont do it"

                >What exploration? You've seen it all before how many times now?
man you homosexuals trying to pretend the optional mini dungeons are all "copy pasted" better not ever play BoTW, you'd think the shrines are all copy pasted because they use repeating assets to create increasingly more complex puzzles.

                Anonymous

Really the purpose of all the mini-dungeons is that they each have specific types of items and materials but mainly it's a good way for some runs when you need to level up, because they bosses given decent amounts for the area. You can skip all the mini-dungeons and do fine, I've seen streamers do this on accident. You go into them either for something specific (like smithing stones in mines) or you go in for the runes. The potential drops or hidden chests are a bonus. The game teaches you pretty quick what the different dungeon types are for:
                >catabombs are for spirit ashes and their upgrades, nothing more, can be ignored if you don't summon, but sometimes there's hidden loot.
                >caves are for loot. You'll likely find something in addition to getting a good drop from the boss.
                >mines are for stones, however the bosses usually have loot, so they're still better than catacombs
                >the rarer hero tombs have lots of great drops, usually hard to find full armor sets, and rarely give spirit ashes but only in addition to other things. They're more challenging than the other mini dungeons.
                >there are additional repeated things which similarly are repeated so you know where to go for a specific type of item, like the Rises giving memory stones, or ruins having a basement door, or flooded ruins having a mariner, and of course the artist's shacks.

And all of these replace the bloodborne chalice dungeons in their function as an optional place for grinding, while being intentionally constructed rather than randomly generated, which means they can be mazes and have puzzles that both get more complex as you go through the game.

Also all the desperate homosexuals who keep complaining they're copy pasted, they're not only optional but make up only 20% of the game's content. You can get plenty of loot and runes just exploring the open world between actual dungeons, but if you need something specific or want a quick level from a boss fight, that's what they're for.

This is why ER is fantastic replay without slogging through big early areas like the first half of DS1, it gives you the freedom to do whatever.

You can easily just go to the main dungeon and a few key side dungeons where you need to grab weapons, spells, talimans, fashion etc relevant to your build plus seeds, tears, and upgrade stones and you're set to beat Godrick in the first 3-4 hours of the game.
Compare to 30 hours that on my first run where I explored a bunch before doing Stormveil.

It has 4x the worthwhile content of any other Souls game so it was worth the price. And my advice to you lad is pirate the game if you're not sure you're gonna like it, or at least wait for your trusted sources to tell you about its content. Nobody but suckers buys $60 games blind.

I don’t regret buying and playing ER, although I was disappointed with it. I’d say it’s got about 50 hours of good or even great content and another 60 of mediocre and sometimes even bad content. This, at least for me, results in a much less satisfying experience compared to say 25 hours of solid content.

Pretty sure you do, especially in something like DS3 since it's fully linear, meanwhile you can skip 90% of ER if you so desire.
By the way here's all of the Great Hollow map pickups, riveting stuff innit? Totally not useless garbage outside of a single Cloranthy Ring.
              >But the catacombs instead are all about the reward at the end of them.
in 90% of the cases you get better stuff out of the pickups near the entrance instead of the boss fights at the end, but sure, whatever you say anon.

It's Dark Souls 1, I'm doing a quality claymore build (currently at 20/20 with a +5 weapon) with no magic and I'm going into Blighttown from Depths. Please highlight the items I can pick up there that will be useful for my build.

Your goal isn't to get loot in Dark Souls. You're going through the depths to get to blighttown. Making your way through the level to the end is its own reward. Your only goal for these catacombs is loot. That's the reward at the end. It's not a waste of time to get through the Depths because i'm naturally progressing through the game. There aren't 50 Depths in DS1 that all look and play the same. How do you not understand the difference? ER gays I swear to god are fricking stupid.

    >for the first time
problem is the first time seems like enough

don't get me wrong, I had a fricking blast, I put a LOT of time in when it came out, it was addicting. I went and found all the legendary whatevers, did all the bosses, only missing achievements for standard and chaos endings. Then I started NG+ and got back to haligtree again and kinda lost steam and haven't played since

I'm not even sure what I want to do when the DLC comes out... having not played in several months, and knowing from past souls DLCs, I probably don't want to go in in NG+ mode to the DLC because I'll get btfo hard, on the other hand, contrary to every past souls game, ER is the one where I'm most hesitant to do a new character altogether because the early game is so... slow... I did a lot of mogh palace cliffside grinding in NG+ so I could get a lot of carry weight and other stats up so I could try a bunch of different things, and I like being able to play with alternate stuff (first runthrough did a pretty boring and safe quality build basically maining bloodhound fang and nightrider flail) which I was having lots of fun with in ng+ early areas. From being able to actually fashion souls and not need to constantly hardswap and being able to try out a bunch of other random weapons (why the frick do so many swords n shit have such high int reqs wtf), I really don't want to go back to streamlined boring efficiency (probably just bhf and flail again) because soul gain is so damn slow in early game and everything has such high split stat reqs and you actually want vig...

idk. I *want* to play the dlc, but I don't want to do a new char because of the slow ass early game, and I don't want to use my existing ng+ because ng+ dlc scaling in fs games is kinda whack and I'm rusty

wish I could send my ng+ dude back to ng0

The game has been forever ruined by From Soft/Bamco meddling with "speed running" strats because they want to force players to take the designated path in AN OPEN WORLD game.

None of the skips were gamebreaking, once the DLC comes out I'm using Grand Merchant and going to just shit on it

        Anonymous

yeah... that's one thing I'm vaugely considering doing, just making some 'hacked starter' save to use when the DLC comes out, basically just have all the stats at levels that I can use everything... the main problem with that is specific gear that isn't available till late game... I guess I *could* also just add those in but then at that point it's almost like recreating my ng+ guy with merchant all consumables, talismans, double powerstanced 'once per ng loop' upgraded weapons etc... which also seems excessive and completely kills pacing and any motivation to explore at all...

what skips are ya talkin about? most I know about speed running 'nerfs' was hoarfrost stomp which tbh I didn't really notice that much (I *did* have hoarfrost stomp on my nightrider flail for most of the game), I think it happened by the time I was in ng+ (the nerf) but based on the way I actually used that WA (to create openings in melee combat with how it staggered; versus... just spamming things to death with it) I didn't really notice much of a difference

ok I know a bit about what those are, never did them myself; no clue what any of the others are

I guess I hadn't been following ER youtube much since I stopped playing, mostly what I knew about was some kind of quitting while you're falling through the air and loading up in farum azula and then just spamming hoarfrost stomp on maliketh and elden beast or something like that.

that stuff doesn't bother me that much, never used it, don't have any plans on using it

on a moderately related note; is it true that they nerfed the shit out of a lot of WAs because of pvp and summons for... other reasons (guessing speedrunners make them look bad for the whole 'souls hard' image) and the game is much much much sweatier now? (as mentioned earlier haven't actually played since 1.03, and didn't play much *in* 1.03, just part of an ng+ run... didn't even go back to farum azula yet, but did kill fire giant, got to haligtree, and had killed mogh again. I think the last things I was messing with were... radagon's hammer and the longhorn. oh yeah and powerstance damage racing mogh with dual bh fangs while facetanking his nihil and winning

I do vaguely recall that in 1.03 anyways, in ng+ when I decided to finally try moonveil and RoB even if they allegedly had been nerfed they still seemed pretty frickin OP though

Honestly the most fun by far I had in this game was replaying the Limgrave low level mob fights over and over. I probably did the one with the giants and wandering nobles in a caravan at least 500 times. The Misbegotten courtyard fight at castle Morne, too. It’s fun to make weird builds and test them against these mongrels. I think of it as a sandbox game rather than comparing it to Souls games and my butthurt goes away.

FROM's art direction and composition is unparalleled.
Many games have started injecting color after the bloom/brown/grey games of gen7, but they're really overdoing it and end up being the other extreme and being hard on the eyes.

Yes, it takes more effort and talent to craft a composition that looks that good from a fully utilitarian gameplay perspective. Giving a player your vision is easier than giving the player the tools to utilize his own vision to the same effect.

SotC has god tier artistry though? What they did with that game is NOT industry standard and never has been.

Beating Godfrey/Hoarah Loux as a pure caster?
    I'm struggling.

Struggling how? Stay far and shoot him, his attacks are pretty easy to dodge when you're not attacking in melee range.

Just finished my second playthrough of Elden Ring. It’s still the best game I’ve ever played and no amount of seething replies will change my mind.

im decent at the combat so i actually liked going to the dungeons just for the sake of fighting the boss, if the item i got was one that fit my build i was happy if not I at least enjoyed thinking about what kind of build would use it and maybe respeccing for it.

sorry you had such a frustrating time you couldnt enjoy yourself.

I'm more than 500 hours in. Love this shit. Beaten the game multiple times, on NG+7 now. Can beat all bosses solo with nonbleed melee builds, have done a hitless Radagon and 1st phase Malenia, which was immensely satisfying.
Not my favorite combat of From games (that's Sekiro), but the game is damn good. Frick Death Rite Birds though. Doublefrick them.

you will still have the opportunity when dlc comes out. if you didn't play the regular game spoiler free (you looked at the wiki for example) then you should try playing the dlc as blind as possible for a better experience this time around.

    >First 20 hours
    >holy shiieeet this is amazing
    >what a beautiful world, full of strange creatures to see
    >first 50 hours
    >holy shieet this game is amazing, but why are there no NPCs/storylines/quests
    >oh wait, so I have to look up the wiki to follow quests? Why haven't I seen hardly any npcs so far at all?
    >200 hours
    >still a good game but dissapointing lack of followable quests, dialogues etc
it's actually very empty in most ways, but the beauty of the world makes up for that in a lot of way. Somewhat dissapointing experience in some ways though. Thought from might change their formula for once, but no.

Nah, the world is really barren and some of the quests are almost impossible to complete without a guide.
