StarCraft. There's something comfy about building your little death ball and listening to terran 1. Or any rts or tactical game, really. Ff tactics, disgaea. I always got emotionally attached to certain units so I just keep them around even if they are absolutely useless in late game. Not to mention I'm unable to grasp minor details and nuances and stats which would ultimately accumulate into my favor, so instead I just go for mages with big numbers and slow as fuck str guys.

What difficulty are you on and seems to be the problem? Economy not big enough to build enough of the right units so you can roll over your enemies?

I've spent 70 hours in hoi4 and still can't get gud

How? HoI4 was massively dumbed down from HoI3.

Clocked 100 hours in DS3 by the time I killed the final boss, and this Monday I killed Nashandra in DS2 at 107 hours (didn't kill King Vendrick yet).
This is my 2nd DS2 playthrough, I likely also had 100+ hours in the past, I remember my character being something ridiculous like level 180 or 250, I was a king proficient at everything.
And I've done two (incomplete, up to Ornstein & Smough) DS1 runs, likely 150 hours total.

People know I love Dark Souls. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? I'M A FUCKING FRAUD.
Despite googling the best weapons and infusions for DS3 (lightning black knight greatsword, sunlight blade..) and overleveling, I couldn't kill the bosses, so I resorted to cheesing with pyromancies and ranged miracles.
You see those +10 weapons and fancy armor? All for fucking show, I ran around naked shooting Dorothy's Gnaw at Gundyr, Nameless King and Soul of Cinder.
I couldn't get even close fighting them at melee, I'd still be stuck a year later. My real win was beating the Lothric Princes at melee, the rest didn't count.

And whenever I can't beat an enemy in DS2 I equip Dark Orb and shoot it to death. I can't get past the Drakekeepers in the Dragon's Shrine stairs, at melee I only beat the first one then died a dozen times to the mace one.

My only peak was beating Ornstein and Smough with a sword 8 years ago.

And really the Drakekeepers thing hits too real because the dragon knights around even stop and kneel while we duel, just watching us, this is supposed to be a test of skill and I just Dark Orb pewpewpew to kill the Keepers in seconds, 3 shots.
However if I were to try battling them at melee, they're a legit endgame boss, I'm cheating.

just unlock the camera and roll back whenever the enemy lifts its arm
      dark souls isn't actually hard

Dark Souls 3 is specifically made against players who rolled a lot. You can do that as soon as they lift an arm, but fuckers have like 5+ hits combos with delays or are simply too fucking fast / track you, most of the time in DS3 I didn't feel safe.
Maybe if you fully memorize the bosses' patterns after a dozen deaths.
I'll agree that does work on DS2. EXCEPT ON THE DRAKEKEEPERS I MENTIONED, they have tracking. You roll and the bitch just turns to hammer you down with the mace, or you dodge but he immediately starts another attack. But that's just one enemy (and fire Salamanders, those also have melee tracking regardless of your dodges).
I did kill Nashandra easily like that. Get close to trigger her lifting her weapon, then just roll somewhere else and hit.

Dark souls 3 is shit, it's made to make you spam rolls (which is why it's also the game that gives you the biggest rolls with the lowest stamina cost in the entire series) so you get caught in the enemy's attack. Unlocking the camera and just running away helps, since all the moves are made with you dodging in a circle in mind.

That's how I cheated Soul of Cinder and Gundyr. Just ran away naked shooting miracles, still died a lot, God I'm a fraud lmao

I meant to dodge so you can go back in and hit them with a weapon anon, not so you could shoot your little bitch miracles

NTA but for me it ends up being annoying trying to wait for a window to actually hit the enemy after so much dodging

              Anonymous

Not quite, because it's just mindless really. You don't need to think about the direction or timing of your dodges, you just spam B to get invincibility whenever a series of attacks happen. And yeah, you could say that about a lot of souls games, but DS3 really fucking pushes it.

Its s 1 dimensional trial and error roll fest.
Your APM is actually very low compared to real action games, you do nothing but strafe then roll 1-5 times then hit 1-2 times EVERY SINGLE BOSS.
You aren't allowed to do anything cool or empowering, the bosses get that treatment instead, the camera tracks their jumps, flips, dashes, combos but if you look at your character or controller nothing special is happening. Its extremely manipulative presentation to fool low IQ's into enjoying it. To me its dead end game design.

DS3 is my example of a 1/10 video game, its one of the worst action games ever made and it also entirely neglects it rpg side. The fact theres any debate DS3 isnt the worst souls shows those threads lack critical thinking

bro, you're overthinking it. all you need to do is git gud.

srsly though, just learn boss patterns. Souls games are hard af the first run, but after you memorize the attack patterns and the flow of the boss you can start having crazy fun doing stupid runs with friends. Cosplay runs, RP runs, builds that shouldnt work runs, ffs you can even do naked whip bdsm runs. You just need to git gud.

If i were to take a guess you're probably playing too defensively and are over relying on shields rather than dodging.

All of them. In every single game, my peak is "way better than average but nowhere near what actual good players can do."

    Stuck low master in LoL.
Stuck mid diamond in Starcraft 2 (at launch, no idea what the ranks are these days).
My times in Monster Hunter are always ~30% slower than what speedrunners can do.
Stuck M+18-20 in WoW, while actual good player push 22-23s.

There's not a single game that I can say I'm truly good at. I'm the king of the shitters.

Binding of Isaac for sure. I don't know if I'm a complete lucklet or if I'm just really really fucking bad. I haven't unlocked any of the character alts. I have some good runs here and there. I've beat hush a ton of times, delerium a few times, mega satan is an easy enough run but I just can't seem to get those all those fucking checks. To be fair to myself I don't autistically study crazy item builds and just go with whatever the game throws at me, good or bad. I've been playing from the day it was originally released.

But why would you quit if you have fun? I mean it's not like a job where you should do something you actually good at to get good results or at least be decent enough to make a living. Sure, there could be games which are more suitable for him, but if he just likes that certain game better then why bother?
