It hurts bros

I miss when single player game worlds and characters could become everlasting institutions people actually cared about instead of only bandwagoning for during the hype cycle for social media engagement

Even worse is that devs themselves don't care about trying to make long lasting games since it's just a paycheck to them

True, now there are no good games and even if there were any they'd be buried under all the garbage immediately

Yep, the garbage in question that a hypothetical good game would be buried under if released today, what a sad sight

Fortnite has no identity, is only held up by constant crossovers and cross promotions with non-game IPs, and would've been long forgotten if it weren't a live service game with a continuous stream of content and updates. None of these things were required for an IP to establish itself 20 years ago.

Literally no one actually cares about any of these games, not even their devs. No one would put up a poster of them in their rooms, or doodle their characters in their notebook during school, or imagine future sequels or hypothetical scenarios in their worlds.

Games have become entirely performative, both developing and playing, it's done out of a physical compulsion and to fulfill a form whether creative or social (making a game a certain way because.. well that's how they are made, or playing a game because.. well everyone's playing it), like infinitely scrolling social media involuntarily as a conditioned reflex rather than because you want to see more.

As always, the biggest danger with any wild mammal is rabies. When you let wild animals get used to being around humans that increases the chance of contact between humans and animals, which increases the chance of rabies infection

overpopulation and overconnectivity is an existential crisis. an individual barely exists anymore. there's so much content released every year, FOTM is becoming FOTW. AI will only make this worse. soon there'll be so much content we'll need AI to sort through it all for us
