I honestly think when people praise old games like FO3 they actually haven't played the game at all in the last 5 years, they're just going purely off of nostalgia.

I mean, in theory, it sounds super cool to explore the "Capital Wasteland", but from what I remember the city is broken up into small little sections that are only accessible by subway tunnels, so half the time you want to actually explore you need to constantly go through these annoying ass tunnels with 10000000 cannon fodder enemies until you find the fast travel location that lets you skip all the bullshit. It's pretty dumb

Very true. Replaying the game since the last time I played it I was a kid, and the game is so shit compared to NV in everyway. The captial wasteland is so small. You can't explore 99% of the areas, the metro tunnels are copy and pasted, the whole story is moron and somehow fallout 3's gunplay makes NV's gunplay feel amazing. Honestly NV was a step up in everyway, from atmosphere, worldbuilding, quests, story and gameplay. You have to be moronic or baiting to put fallout 3 above NV or even 4.

Fallout 3 was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I go back and play it every year. Your theory is shit. The game is good. The setting is good. The city is broken up the way you're saying, but the city has maybe 10% of the games content, and you're making it sound way worse than it actually is when you play. The tunnels don't take that long. And once you've done them once, fast travel negates the need for them.
Fallout 3 gets the hate it gets mostly because people hated the main story for not being open ended. It's somewhat of a fair criticism but it's not that bad. I tend to ignore the main story, the side content in the game is great and why I play it.
Fallout 4 was an abomination from Hell that should have never been created.

honestly, the worst part of every dungeon in fo3 is that it's three times longer than it needs to be.
The Nuka Cola plant has like 3 maps, the Dunwich Building is 3 maps, the Statesman Hotel has something like 4 floors, not even counting needing to trek through the Our Lady of Hope Hospital to reach most of it. And that's every dungeon which are all full of the same enemies with the same items and using the same office building or cave assets and there's a frickton of dungeons like this in the game.

But on the flip side, NV lacked basically this altogether with the only exceptions of the Bison Steven, Repconn Test Site and Repconn HQ and the Vaults.

    - Living Desert (makes certain quests have a visible impact on the game world, I.E. saving the vault dwellers at vault 34 will spawn NCR deserters that will frequently attack Westside)
    - Th3Overseer's mod quests (introduces new locations around the vegas area as well as fiixng Red Rock Canyon)
    - Working on the Chain Gang (expands the Powder Gangers into a functional faction with a questline that sees them settling into Westside & North Vegas)
    - Tales of New Reno (turns previously empty locations into interesting places to explore)

As someone who just finished TTW and played Fallout 3 and NV basically back to back, I'll say that New Vegas mogs the shit out of it.

What really sucks about Fallout 3 is all of the weird instancing around the capitol, having to walk through all of those weird metro areas over and over again to properly traverse the main area of the game where most of the good shit is (around the National Mall).
And the story is just much less interesting, there's no nuance of trying to sway various groups to align with you, or to destroy them if they oppose you etc.
Also 3 has some god awful companions -- Jericho is just the fricking worst for example.

Basically NV > 3 and it isn't even close.

      Anonymous

What I wish NV had was more elaborate NPC scripting, it's really nice how much of it Fallout 3 has, brings life into the setting of various places when you see NPCs talking to each other.

But that's really the only thing that 3 does better than NV, and I'm guessing the only reason NV doesn't do that is because there just wasn't time to do it. The writing of Fallout 3 is just terrible in comparison to NV, I feel like I made a big mistake playing NV before going into 3 on this latest replay because it stands out like frick. There's absolutely no interesting world building in 3, the game is completely unserious, if something isn't treated as a joke its written for toddlers that aren't paying attention.

Tenpenny Tower Ghoul quest which I just did, would have been such a golden opportunity for interesting writing, but god damn the quest does almost nothing interesting with that concept. I do love the capital wasteland as a setting though, not so much all the metro and underground shit but the surface is kino, and they clearly had budget and time to make it look good, same goes for interiors. It's such a shame that NV was rushed out, they really didn't get to create the best game they could have.

Jericho is fricking sick what are you talking about, he easily mogs every companion in nv just by virtue of being an evil karma follower, while every single follower in nb except the robot and the dog will abandon you if youre a meanie

the way 4 is structured to it makes the 'busy' world design feel useless because you're mostly just picking up trash for the crafting and basebuilding. it also has a bad habit of just giving you a lot of the good shit immediately too, like getting fricking power armor within the first quest, just throwing a endgame item at you within the first 5 minutes of actual gameplay. it just feels like the game is throwing random crap at you instead of a coherent structured experience

The problem is the fricking movement speed as well. I don't see why I never find anyone complaining about that, and my own complaints fall on deaf ears. There is plenty of shit to DO in the wasteland, but the problem is that it was fun over a decade ago and now running around looking for shit is tedious and doesn't feel like exploration so much as a feeling of "why am I obsessively searching for bullets and bullshit when I could just kill shit and steal more valuable shit off of NPCs and get quest rewards?" The brown & grey era was on its way out right around the time that New Vegas came out, people were sick to death of grimdark realism.

I just booted up Fallout 4 and this opening is so alienating and bad. Why does Bethesda insist on giving a predetermined backstory to my character in a create a character roleplaying game?

I don't even see obnoxious NV fans on Ganker these days, it's just mongoloid bethesda ones spamming their meme images.

I love NV, but I also love 3 and 4, NV just is just way better written, has better world building, is a better rpg. But there are things 3 and 4 do better

How the frick Fallout 3 feels so weird and different from New Vegas when they are literally the same engine and same mechanics of gameplay? I don't understand. You notice this in the first 10 min somehow.

      Couple reasons.
One is NV was west coast so it had more of a developed civilization. Fallout 3 was DC which logically would have been far more fricked and irradiated, it got bombed the most heavily out of any area in the US, so it looks like a hellish nightmare land. Harder to rebuild civilization in that area, and more mutants due to more rads. That part I don't mind because it's logical.
The other reason is because NV has invisible walls and directs you on where to go and how to play far more than F3 tries to. I don't hate this, but I do think the game suffers for it. My least favorite part of any NV file is the first two hours or so. It's so fricking nauseatingly boring. Same shit same way everything. Goodsprings>primm>nipton>novac>Boulder city, then you're finally fricking allowed to play the game. You can technically skip these things, but the game tries hard to dissuade you. And I dont like doing it because it breaks immersion and cheapens plot development because they tied the fricking flow of the plot to this linear map structure.
FO3, you are thrust out of the vault and you can start crafting your own journey immediately, and it will all make headcanon sense no matter how you choose to do it. The game and map clearly prod you toward Megaton, but there's no invisible walls or obstacles that make it heavy handed, and you can make it make logical sense for your character if you decide to go do something else. The story will still fall into place.
NV, if you say, want to go straight to Vegas, you'd have to get a stealth boy, or an OP weapon, and fight through shitloads of death claws mad early level. And miss all the introductory quests for each faction, and all the plot points about how you learn where Benny is. So your headcanon becomes, a shitty moron courier somehow defies death twenty times and then magically guesses where his would be killer is and gets revenge. Oh, and now all the factions in the game, for no reason, think he's super cool.

Don't get me wrong I like new vegas. But the argument is always that fo3 sucks and NV is God tier, NV has plenty of its own problems and fo3 is a good game.
And they both MOG the frick out of fo4. I haven't played fo4 since the first week after release and will never play it again

Yeah, it's reasonable to assume that both your in-game character and the person playing could make the connection between a guy wearing a nice suit and New Vegas.

level scaling and the world somehow not having any events happening in them outside of a few closed off areas are precisely why Fallout 3 feel more like a theme park rather than an RPG. Why would you paint them as good things?

        >it breaks immersion and cheapens plot development because they tied the fricking flow of the plot to this linear map structure.
even in Goodsprings you can talk to the locals and get information about Benny. Some of them will outright say that Benny looks like he came from Vegas with that fancy suit of his. From here you can then take the safe route to Vegas, or the dangerous one depending on your character build. There's very little railroading here, if any.

        >The game and map clearly prod you toward Megaton, but there's no invisible walls or obstacles that make it heavy handed, and you can make it make logical sense for your character if you decide to go do something else. The story will still fall into place.
not really. To make a comparison with the first game, Megaton is like Vault 15. As a new player you would go there because it's the first clue that you get. But the problem is that Vault 15 doesn't point you towards a specific place, while Megaton points you to GNR and nowhere else. It doesn't really make sense for your character to ignore the first city that he sees and knows from accessing the Overseer's terminal to frick around and do something else. It DOES make sense for your Courier to consider either the safe but slow route or the dangerous but fast route of going to Vegas. It could use way more urgency though

        >NV, if you say, want to go straight to Vegas, you'd have to get a stealth boy, or an OP weapon, and fight through shitloads of death claws mad early level
and this makes sense. It makes the world more alive rather than it just being a theme park for the player to mess around in.

I dont disagree with all of that except new vegas does not have "natural" pacing by any means

        >So your headcanon becomes, a shitty moron courier somehow defies death twenty times and then magically guesses where his would be killer is and gets revenge. Oh, and now all the factions in the game, for no reason, think he's super cool.
as opposed to Fallout 3, where if you skip the starting main quests, your headcanon becomes "a Vault Dweller that still reeks of his dead mother's milk somehow guesses the Vault his father is in and defeats professional soldiers in power armor on his way to the Citadel?" come on now. NV has some awkward spots, but from the start the path always leads to Vegas regardless of how you approach it. Also it's hardly "defying death" if your character build actually lets you get through Quarry Junction unharmed. Like I said though, I do think there should be more urgency in delivering the chip and chasing Benny, maybe a time limit like in the original Fallout

Except everyone in Goodsprings immediately has him pegged as from New Vegas and Benny isn't exactly a low-profile guy. It is completely reasonable for your Courier to head straight to Vegas or even straight up know who Benny is. Only under very specific circumstances is it weird that all the factions take an interest in you. Basically showing up to the Tops without stopping by Mr. House, but then not murdering Benny in the Tops and letting him flee. Either murdering the head of a casino in his own building, being the first person to enter the Lucky 38 in centuries, or both are enough for the Courier to immediately be interesting to the major factions.

the actual insanity of b***hing about fnv's early section while comparing it to fricking fo3 is unreal. you can mash through doc's bullshit and hoof it to vegas by the time you get done watching the lone wanders' entire formative years happen. its a testament to how forgettable 3 really was that nobody called you out on this, most people probably don't even remember that terrible fricking vault sequence

why? The plot definitely railroads you more in fo3 but the outline of the map railroads you more in NV unless you do headcanon which in my view is too implausible.
Its not a criticism I feel that strongly about though. I like both games. I just hate the shit fo3 gets. It was a great game and I feel the need to point out nvs flaws to counterbalance that stuff sometimes.
But I'll also say the best way to play these two is Tale of Two Wastelands anyway. That makes the headcanon WAY more acceptable to me. If the courier is the vault dweller from 3, then he's already been through a ton of shit and it makes way more sense to my imagination that he can effectively mog all the obstacles and head directly to NV because he's seasoned as frick by that point.
              Plus iron sights in f3

First impressions are important. 3 gives you a cold industrial environment to start with, mostly full of hostile, or as hostile as you can be without physically attacking someone, people. Then it throws you out into some ruined suburbs on the edge of the dead lands with the ruins of a major metropolis just over the way. It's a very oppressive setting that you'd expect from a post apocalypse.
New Vegas drops you in a typical old west town where everybody's friendly. Then you walk down the highway, maybe listen to some old country songs, and as you get further you notice civilization creeping in until you reach the incredibly flamboyant city of New Vegas. In a way it's similar to the death of the west narrative that RDR had

Locations in New Vegas are laid out exactly like the original games if you really look at it.
The "main" locations are striking and have some sort of defining feature, the Novac Dinosaur, Mojave Outpost Statue, Primm's Casino/Roller Coaster, etc., just like Junktown's entrance, Gecko's Power Plant, the Boneyard's Cathedral, etc. They aren't just locations, they have something that sticks out and defines them visually.
The "secondary" locations basically act as the random encounters in 1 and 2, barns, shacks, office buildings, bombed out shops, places where overworld combat happens or just a diversion on your way to one of the main locations. Then, some of those secondary locations turn out more like the unique random encounters from the originals, not necessarily important but interesting enough to make note of, something like the burned camp from the comic, Bonnie Springs, The Devil's Throat etc. etc.
The last group of locations is "frick all", you know, the part of overworld transversal where you just watch a dot move across the screen. Not everything needs to stand out, there's a lot of nothing between locations in the first two games, obviously it's toned down in New Vegas but it gets the job done.

FO3 almost has this, some of the main locations stand out, Rivet City, Megaton, Underworld but mostly, the areas that stand out are tertiary. Look at the Capital Building, Paradise Falls, Arefu, they are almost more striking than the main locations and they are totally optional. It gives the game a completely different tone, as simple and stupid as the difference sounds. Then you get to the clusterfrick of downtown DC which is pretty much one overworld encounter map stretched over an entire corner of the map. Up to the northeast is where Bethesda decided to cram all the "frick all" locations instead of placing them in between striking locations. It's a nearly "Fallout" map but with all the pieces mixed up. Fun to explore, but without natural pacing.

I beg to differ. There's the pseudo-railroaded route you're intended to take but I'm talking about the more mundane, something like the walk to Jacobstown or traveling to Red Rock Canyon, getting to Nellis. They all follow frick all -> secondary ->(...)-> main. Take Jacobstown, you have the walk to the entrance of the mountain range(immediately preceded by the Tumbleweed Ranch), Silver Peak mine, then Jacobstown.

Say what you want about Fo3, but I’ve been enjoying it lately after installing mods like ENB, retextured graphics, titans of the east, project reality, nudity stuff, and weather cycles. Not only does it feel like a brand new game, but you feel like an absolute boss firing at raiders 100 feet away from your incinerator, all while in a large full suit of black devil power armor. But to be fair, exploring the non-metro wasteland of the game is only fun after grinding to a higher level and hoarding all the special unique weapons certain enemies have.

Skyrim's map mogs the absolute shit out of every 3D Fallout's map and proves that even when Bethesda doesn't care about TES, they still somehow care more than if they were making a Fallout game.
