The backlash against Factorio's recent price increase has to be the most reddit outrage I have seen. To sell to a more price sensitive market. This is how the media industries operate and you already know that. Consumers have an expectation that the price will go down and they're right to complain when it doesn't.

Media has a one time massive cost and an ongoing minor cost. This is why DVDs can be sold for $5 mere months after launch. Most of the costs were made back in the cinema and through broadcast/streaming rights. DVD/BluRay sales are the end of the chain, usually long after all the costs have been recuperated. And shops don't want to sit on copies of Die Hard 4 for 3 years so they sell them for cheap to make room for new product.
Factorio is in active development so even if all their prior costs have been recuperated, their NEW costs haven't. And their NEW costs are higher than their old costs because of inflation.
Your argument boils down to, Factorio should be in a finished state and amortised in cost and they should be working on Factorio 2 instead. That's a valid argument.
But ongoing Factorio 1 should get cheaper over time is not valid. That's stupid. That's like saying Amazon should be able to pay you less over time because your job as warehouse picker should get cheaper to them over time.

        >Factorio as a product has not lost value
But it has. It no longer a "new game", people have been playing it for many years and it is incredibly easy to simply pirate.
The market for Factorio is also largely saturated. If you want to play the autism logistics game genre, you likely already own it. Everyone who wants to buy it already paid for the game.

Supply is infinite and Demand is dropping through the floor, the value is droppinh. Sure, you can increase prices, but against a price sensitive market like today's, this will only push demand down further, increasing the disparity between value and price further. Also it makes you look bad.
These two factors may push people to pirate the game rather than buying.

    People are fucking dumb.

The devs have assigned a value to their game. I'm not talking about monetary value here, I'm just talking about a GENERAL value. How much it's worth to them, how much they want to "trade" it for. In this case, like with all things, they are trading for money, like everyone does.

They stated, outright, they never want to put the game on sale, as in their view, this would be an unfair/not equal exchange. That's fine. No one is forcing them to do so. No one is forcing you to buy the game if you don't think that's a fair price (piracy notwithstanding).

That said, the VALUE of money changes, but how much the value the game, doesn't. As such, it makes perfect sense to make a minor price increase due to inflation is, IMO, a perfectly fair thing to do if I had the same mindset as the devs do with regards to how much they value their own product.

That's the problem, they established the trading price and it was agreed upon by people who purchased it, now they've adjusted how much they want for it inb4 "muh inflation" and consumers have disagreed with it. Just as they have the right to adjust the pricing of the game, consumers have the right to complain about it.

thats cool and all I pirated the game, played for 10 minutes, uninstalled it and never looked back

They can price their game to whatever they want, I'm not buying it

also in terms of marketing and economics, what they're doing is actually retarded. You don't make more money just because you sell at a higher price, the actual amount of money you make can be maximized by lowering your price to gain more sales. In fact that's the entire point of sales: You temporarily test lower price points to see how well the product sells and if the ratio of the sales vs price generates more money faster for you than the higher price with fewer sales. Valve has a whole bunch of statistical analysis on this sort of thing which is why they offer to do automatic sales for game devs publishing on their platform - valve knows how to make more money better than devs do.

So basically the gist of what I'm saying here is that factorio devs are stubborn retards spiting themselves more than anything.

It's true retard-kun. Most games in general have issues selling dlc after the intial sales, so much so there's normally a 50% drop off. In Diablo 3's case the drop off was incredibly steep due to their shitty business practices and fumbling of the game, only 25% iirc.

So logically, a stunt like this is very short term gain oriented, and will net them a small profit now, however their future sales will be impacted by the negative reviews and press on steam. It's going to be hard to sell 5$ dlc to this game to people who are now not satisfied with your business practices.

It makes *logical* sense, yes. But because the devs are interpersonally autistic (not in the actual sense), they don't have the interpersonal skills to understand how this fucks someone else over.

It's not about the actual value (as you see it), nor the monetary value. It's that they're focused only on mechanically increasing the price because it offsets inflation and the rest be damned. It's the 'rest be damned' part that gets people's jimmies rustled.

I don't blame them, this is how their brain works, obviously. The game is a literal expression of how their brain likes to interact with the world. They wouldn't have made the game otherwise. A writer couldn't have made this game for example.

It's the dev's right to increase the price however he wants. As long as he agrees that it's my right to pirate the game. Which he does so we have no problem here. But that's besides the point because I've already bought the game after pirating it because it was just that fucking good.

You'd be correct. Its only popular because it was the "first" of its type that caught on.

Nowadays, there are far better games that offer much more content and refined gameplay for less price. Factorio is a relic, which is why its so bizarre that they would INCREASE the price rather than DECREASING it.

It doesn't even get back at the hypothetical Russian Steam-using vatnik because they can't buy shit on Steam directly in the first place, they switch to Turkish locale to do so. They also tried to walk this back as a technical error while one of their ukro devs spilled the beans that it was very much intentional.

There used to be time when people here respected that, before you all became a fucking ResetEra except for Ruskies instead of gays, crying and pissing yourself and demanding cancelation because your vulnerable little ruskie wards are being threatended.

If this was a statement about Russia, they would SAY SO. They would not do it silently. They made all of their other statements clear before and after. because the product is already launched and not getting any significant updates if they're making separate for sale dlc. They don't have a real justification for the price increase, which many people means they should fuck themselves. If it were something they actually had to produce constantly they'd have legitimate reasons for increasing the price, this is just a cashgrab. Most people don't like cashgrabs.

They're greedy, simple as. That said, I don't care, I bought the game years ago, got my money's worth of entertainment and haven't touched it since. They are, however, being rightfully called out on bullshit. Old games don't increase in price, ever, this is literally the first time this has happened in the industry's history, and it sets a precedent if consumers take it lying down. It tells publishers that not only do they not have to put games on sale, but they can in fact adjust for inflation whenever the fuck they want.

If that starts happening from now on, we have Factorio to blame. Whatever though, another argument in favour of pirating.

Reminder that THIS is what people's backlash amounts to. Even less drama than when the trannies seethed at Factorio.

You know why? Because the devs fully understand that they're sitting on a golden game. And they KNOW that you KNOW in the back of people's head Factorio is still worth 35 bucks it's just that good. A great product remains a great product and that's what the free market will eventually place value on.

How well does Factorio play on Steam Deck in terms of performance and controls? I can't play games like this on desktop; I'll only pick it up if I can play it in small bursts throughout the day to keep my mind sharp while taking breaks from work due to ADHD distraction.

      >How well does Factorio play on Steam Deck in terms of performance and controls?
Factorios is an INSANELY well optimized game, it runs on the worst tosters I've ever seen so unless you plan to build mega-factories, run some of the really badly optimized mods (like AAIndustry) or otherwise push it, I'm pretty confident it should run well.

The controls on the other hand - I can't fucking see how you would comfortably play Factorio on anything but mouse and keyboard. Call me spoiled but in a game like this, control just seems insanely clunky and lacking all the convenience features.

      Anonymous

They're optimizing the game for the switch, it'll run on the deck. For controls I'm not sure how they work, but with the deck you do have the touch pads and touch screen.

Performance is very good. Not "huge megabase" levels of good because you can quite literally build until you reach the limit no matter what PC you have, but the game will run at 60FPS/60UPS effortlessly for any "normal" base you can imagine, even a large one.

There's also an official binding for the game available on the Deck, so the devs have put in some effort to adapt the controls at the very least. I have personally not played it on my Deck beyond running around to see what it's like so I haven't reached any 'proficiency' with the controls, but it's not like its a twitch shooter where you need split-second perfect precision so I imagine there would be a learning curve for the controls at first and after that you'd be fine, just a matter of getting used to a control setup that isn't like something you've used before. Also the game released on Switch relatively recently and the devs said they're working to add official controller support to the game itself on PC as well, but I don't think that patch is out yet.

whats wrong with the gog version of factorio?
every time someone mentions it they act like its cursed.

Nothing as far as I know, though you can also buy it DRM-free from Wube directly. In fact I'm pretty sure you get the DRM-free version from them directly no matter where you buy.

Consumers are right to be pissed.
It's anti consumer behavior, if I cared about the genre or the game I would pirate based on how far the dev has gone to garden gnome the consumer.
Honestly, does the dev team even plan to release any new games? Why come into the industry make a successful title and then not try to iterate on the ideas presented? Seems like a lazy developer with gnomish tendencies wants to sit on a cash cow and ride out the sales until he is forced to work again.

So the price increased by 14%. Has anything been added to the game to increase the value by 14%? 14 is generous since there are now competing games that devalue it

If it actually mattered that much he would have just went with the $70 piss take and be done with it. The game is certainly worth more as a product than most million dollar budget AAA garbage, so why not? Just take getting shat on for being a stupid gay who cares more about bottom lines instead of consumer standards, and get over it. The reviews will iron themselves out for "off-topic activity".
