Extended is just a gold edition of the game with compatibility and wide screen resultion patches.
Still the same engine with no new models, textures, no changes to the A.I. or alterations to the gameplay, other than the actually objective downgrades accidentally introduced with the Dragon expansion.
The idea behind retold is giving it the AO2DE treatment, which means altering almost every aspect of the game. Entire new assets, different engine all together, complete rewrite of the A.I., reballancing the entire expansion, major fixes to the unfinished or broken missions, rewritting the skirmish A.I. from scratch, that kind of stuff.
Forgotten Empires should. The guys behind AoE1/2/3 DE versions.

If you want genuine videogame discussion, by people with genuinely love of the medium, you'll have higher chance to see like-minded people in twitch chats and youtube comments than here.

No, both of them were fantastic, one of them succeeded so hard that it re-established a nearly dead game into being the second biggest competetive strategy on the market.
Age of Wonders Retold is being made by the same people who made Definitive edition of Age of Empires 2.
