Yakuza 8 flopped in the West

    >sales in Japan and Asia seem to have made up a big part of this momentum, as Yokoyama notes, “The game is incredibly strong in Japan. Sales in (the rest of) Asia are also quite strong, but the momentum in Japan is even greater than in the past.”

I dunno, given the nothingburger of the P3R DLC, will probably bring more bad than good.

I bought and enjoyed it, fun game.

They can pump out Yakuza games that's for sure. Persona takes development. And Sonic is a hit or miss. They should make a new IP or borrow one.

They could try to make the games smaller or episodic. Although episodic games don't have a good track record.

Honestly 7 was my one of my favorite games but them putting Kiryu in the game, making part of it take place in America and using zoomer e-celebs to advertise the game were all enough to make me not want to play it.

They'll just hire some Korean or Chinese devs to make Persona games and then completely destroy the franchise.

Ichiban really is taking on Kiryu's mantle down to the yearly installments reusing prior Yakuza assets. What a good lad.

Also they're about to run out of games to remaster, with heroes rumored for next year that only leaves unleashed and the adventure games (which they're doing everything in their power NOT to remaster) as far as well received games are concerned. I mean, what are they gonna remaster after that? Shadow the Hedgehog? Sonic 06? The storybook games? Fricking sonic boom and lost world?

Shadow the Hedgehog needs a remaster so that everyone can experience it.

Nah the brand guarantees a certain level of sales, they'll just start making them so cheaply that they'll always profit whether they're good or bad.

How are people not seeing the silver lining here, it's going to cost a lot to have the staff to release one of these games per year, you will live to see Sega die off completely and it's management ousted.

Sega are incredibly risk averse, after the first set of flops they'll just kill off all future plans quietly. They'll burn money, but they'll burn it slowly, just look at their failed Sakura Taisen reboot and that Hyenas shit.

    >"lets pump out a game every year, it's not like that's a completely unreasonable request that other much larger and more successful publishers have tried and failed at (Activision with CoD, EA with Battlefield, etc)!"

sega continue to prove that they are borderline moronic, were they just so mindbroken by the utter failure of Hyenas that they are now desperately scrambling to make any money ASAP and are making moronic decisions in search of that?

They've been doing it with Yakuza for like 19 years now. The only time they didn't have a game out was in the transitional period of PS2 to PS3 (So 2007 and 2008). In more recent times they've actually released sometimes upwards of four games in one year, though several are just remasters.

they are counting spin-offs/remasters/remakes in their yearly plan thingy. So its definitely feasible. Last year we got.

      lad ishin and lad gaiden
persona 4g/3p ports and persona 5 tactica

I've never played a Yakuza game, which is why I sound moronic. But from what I know of it, isn't LaD pretty much like a spinoff with completely different characters and gameplay but set in the same universe?
It just sounds weird to me that this is the one they want to turn into an annual thing after making a million regular Yakuza games, it's like if Nintendo announced they wanted to make Fire Emblem Warriors games an annual thing.

Again, I've never played Yakuza so feel free to correct me if I just typed out moronation.

I dont blame you. in late 2022, they decided to rebrand the yakuza series as a whole to Like a dragon. This is to match with the japanese name which isnt yakuza, its ryu ga gotoko (like a dragon.) This was probably to fit with the actual yakuza in the game being less prevalent in the general lore of these games.

          >isn't LaD pretty much like a spinoff with completely different characters and gameplay but set in the same universe?
No. "Like a Dragon" is the original name in Japan (龍が如く). They rebranded it here in the west because Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Aka Like a Dragon 7) was essentially a soft reboot of the mainline series with a new MC, new characters, the JRPG gameplay, etc. The series was starting to find more and more traction here, and it's assumed they wanted to have a name parity across both regions rather than Yakuza in one, Like a Dragon in the other. In addition to this the yakuza were becoming a dying breed in Japan and 7 itself was sort of playing into that, so them keeping the "Yakuza" name wouldn't make much sense going forward.

The main issue now is that they're constantly renaming game names for little to no reason.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is actually "Like a Dragon 7: Whereabouts of Light and Darkness".
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is actually "Like a Dragon 7 Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name". This is an issue because it implied "Gaiden" is its own mini-series rather than being a supplemental story for a specific title.
Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is actually "Like a Dragon 8" and even outfits in-game in the western version show the 8.
Like a Dragon Ishin is actually "Like a Dragon Kiwami", the "Kiwami" moniker indicating it's a remake of a game. The issue here is that this massively muddies discussions of the game in the fanbase and no one knows if you're talking about the original or the remake in the west because they're distinctly different games across the board. Sort of like an RE4 vs. RE4R situation.

They're basically just making discussions about the series in the west way more complicated because people go into 7 and 8 thinking they're some standalone titles when they are absolutely not, they're 7 and 8.

But that's the quickest way to reach IP fatigue and saturation.
It works for FIFA and CoD but not for story focused games that are 60+ hours long like Yakuza or Persona.
If you include spin-off, people got quickly tired of the P4/P5 milking.
It could work for Sonic as its fanbase are basically battered housewives.
