The most unbalanced game of all. The options to form teams are very limited and the difficulty does not allow you to use mediocre pokemon.

          3 Kantomon...
I have no problems using pokemon from other regions but the Sinnohmon are mostly weak that you are forced to use the same old thing or opt for Kantomon.
Do you want a water type? use Floatzel... or Gyarados because Finneon is trash.
Do you want a flying type? Staraptor is the only option... or Scyther. Drifblim is inaccessible for 80% of the game.
Do you want an electric type? Luxray is the only thing... or Jolteon, but you've probably used it before.
Do you want a bug, fire, psychic or poison type? Scyther, Rapidash, Alakazam, Crobat...

            >Finneon is trash.
It's not. Any Water type is fine with the Surf/Ice Beam combo.
            >Drifblim is inaccessible for 80% of the game.
No it isn't. No idea what you're referring to.
            >or Jolteon
Magnezone? Electabuzz/vire? Pachirisu? Have you played the game? You can get Thunderbolt tms easily also, samething for Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Psychic too.
            >Do you want a bug, fire, psychic or poison type? Scyther, Rapidash, Alakazam, Crobat...
That's very reductive. And Crobat is not a Kantomon.

              >It's not. Any Water type is fine with the Surf/Ice Beam combo.
LOL what? Don't compare Floatzel or Gyarados to trash like Finneon.
              >Drifblim is inaccessible for 80% of the game.
You have to beat Team Galactic to get it.
              >Magnezone? Electabuzz/vire? Pachirisu?
You get Electabuzz late. Pachirisu is hot garbage. I never used Magnezone, I don't know how it performs.

Kricketot, Carnivine, Cherrim, Wormadam, Finneon, Chatot, Lopunny, Bastiodon, ... Sinnoh has so much garbage and mons that they are not bad but they require an insane amount of work to get them and they have terrible matchups like Drapion, Dusknoir and Vespiqueen that at the end of the day they contribute nothing.

Ingame Pokemon is a lot different from Competitive Pokemon. Only the shittiest shitmons like Unown are unusable in a normal playthrough. There's nothing wrong with Lumineon or Pachirisu. Drapion, Dusknoir, and Vespiquen are not very difficult to obtain either, you can even soft reset Combee's gender if you encounter one in a tree.
Also your Drifblim point makes no sense, you can get it on Fridays after beating the first Mars boss battle, this isn't even after the 2nd gym fight.

Didn't really fix any of DP's core issues, although it touched up the engine enough that playing it most of the time isn't completely miserable and added some decent content. Still made me almost quit Pokemon but that's really more DP's fault, I won't blame Platinum for not doing more in what like a year? I think I prefer Emerald over it but I'm just a more gameplay orientated guy, if you fricking hate the RSE overworld art style like a normal person it might turn you off on it, if you think Battle Palace is a war crime like most people you might consider the Gen 4 version of the BF to be better, and if you don't care about good map design I'm sure Platinum is great for you. HGSS is my Gen 4 title of choice, what a wonderful little game.

Emerald is alright, but Platinum feels like the defining game of the series. It is the cleanest game, it answers the ultimate existential questions in the fictional universe, it has a kino cold aesthetic, it's got an appropriate level of Kanto pandering, the level curve is balanced, a complete battle frontier, etc.

Good thing that isn't the refutation. Sounds way more like Yawnie's rhetoric.

They don’t need to play exactly like Pokémon does. In fact, I’d argue exp share is even more important in Pokemon than any of those other games simply because of the sheer number of possible party members and the fact that most battles are 1v1, making the majority of your party do nothing most of the time, meaning without exp share, nearly your entire party quickly falls behind and becomes useless, giving the player no incentive to use them. Oops!

                >sheer number of possible party members and the fact that most battles are 1v1
Sure, let's ignore the fact that Pokemon has way more opportunities to gain exp already, on top of the only one among them to emphasize developing a personal bond with your mons, calling you a "trainer". Most game at the very least limit exp to members who actually participated in the battle.

Not when there's no shared exp. When am I ever going to give my lv12 Oddish exp if my lv28 Charmeleon already 1HKOs everything?

                >on top of the only one among them to emphasize developing a personal bond with your mons
When am I going to develop a personal bond with my Oddish if the game never gives me a reason to use it?

Most Dragon Quest games don't have that feature. A lot of JRPGs don't even have enough character that they can't always be in battle at the same time. Many modern JRPGs have ways to modify experience point gain in some way to prevent overleveling. Seems like Pokemon is actually regressing compared to Xenoblade, Bravely Default, or most Dragon Quest games.

Literally all those JRPGs I listed have more characters than they do battle slots. In fact, I also forgot Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Granblue Fantasy, and Palworld also have forced exp for benched party members. Oops!

So you're saying Pokemon not in your party should gain EXP too? Also, you're forgetting some elements of Xenoblade 2. And arguably 3, and Future Connected. You really seem to not think about JRPGs much.

                Anonymous

Because it actually attempted to balance the mechanic compared to BDSP, which forced so many things on the player which made the vast majority of the game trivial, or XY, which had zero mitigating factors on top of minor balance issues in the player's favor, or SS, which was just trivial in general. And even then it's mostly just difficulty spikes and the "harder" route bosses are about as trivial as some random trainers in previous games, it's inconsistent enough that I feel the difficulty is more of an accident than an intentional design given everything before and after it. Basically, there's been like two Pokemon games that justified the mechanic (SM and USUM), and both of them made it optional which only goes to prove my point that it doesn't need to be around all the time. It's a great option to have when you're grinding in the post-game (although if you're EV training it can be a negative), and honestly I wish they made EXP scaling optional as well since it's great for the story and leveling new Pokemon and awful for leveling high level Pokemon and giving Rare Candy out like candy is a band aid (much like the Lucky Egg in the middle of BW's story is). Basically, more options are good, like DQ11, Xenoblade 2, and many of the Bravely games provide. Pokemon is actively making the games worse by removing them, SV doesn't let you do Set battles, turn of EXP All, turn off animations, I'm shocked it doesn't force Affection mechanics on you like BDSP did honestly.

Why is BDSP harder than DPPt then?

It isn't? Like, at a base mechanical level the player with be way stronger than the incredibly minor changes to some of the boss trainers. I know somebody likes to post a screenshot of Maylene, but when you actively compare the data of the two different iterations it's arguable BDSP nerfed her. Even post-game Cynthia is made trivial by the Affection system, the only remotely difficult thing is the Battle Tower and that's really only in comparison to the absolutely gutted version from SS. At best the BDSP BT is around as difficult as any one that isn't SS, XY, or BW singles.

EVs and actual AI aren’t “an incredibly minor change”. On top of this BDSP has curved exp which makes it slower to overlevel a single Pokemon compared to DPPt.

                > Even post-game Cynthia is made trivial by the Affection system
As opposed to DPPt where Cynthia is made trivial by overleveling and her garbage sets?

                >It is.
Explain, mechanically, how how DPPt provides more opportunities for the player to get stronger than BDSP.
                >EVs and actual AI aren’t “an incredibly minor change”.
Pokemon have had EVs since at least Gen 3, and AI for even longer. It's not like it's Gen 1 where the AI is comically bad.
                >On top of this BDSP has curved exp which makes it slower to overlevel a single Pokemon compared to DPPt.
Except with the constant EXP multipliers that are forcibly applied the opposite tends to happen.
                >As opposed to DPPt where Cynthia is made trivial by overleveling and her garbage sets?
Yes, because bonus crit rate, free focus sash, being on average higher level than you would be otherwise, and other benefits outweighs items that aren't even that great outside of the very last rematch and marginally better moves on Pokemon that were already pretty good stat wise back in Gen 4. Put BDSP Cynthia in DP and she'd murder most players, but in her own game they had to make her overpowered to even approach a challenge.

gen 7 with exp share on is more difficult than every other game so the toggle existing doesn’t affect my argument at all.

I mean it's not that much harder than most Pokemon games with it on, but definitely way harder than most of them that aren't the Game Cube titles with it off.

                > Pokemon have had EVs since at least Gen 3
None of the campaign NPCs have EVs in any game before gen 7. They’re only ever used in battle facilities.

                > and AI for even longer
My guy, DP’s AI picks moves literally at random because GF is moronic and fricked up the programming. Even Gen 1 has better AI than DP. It was fixed in Platinum but it’s still worse than BDSP’s AI.

                > Except with the constant EXP multipliers that are forcibly applied the opposite tends to happen
                Nope.

                > Yes, because bonus crit rate, free focus sash,
These only have a CHANCE of triggering while in DPPt I’m guaranteed to sweep everything just by sheer numbers advantage. And you’re wrong about the levels because of curved exp and the BDSP E4 being higher leveled than Platinum.

                > outweighs items that aren't even that great outside of the very last rematch and marginally better moves on Pokemon that were already pretty good stat wise back in Gen 4.
Items aren’t why BDSP is harder. The NPCs having actual EV spreads is why they’re harder. The fact that you’re so unknowledgeable about the game mechanics that you didn’t even realize all the Pt NPCs have blank EV spreads is hilarious and just demonstrates you’re a moron with poor understanding of these games.

                > I mean it's not that much harder than most Pokemon games with it on
It’s noticeably harder than every single other game in the series with it on, including the garbage GC spin offs.

if someone says USUM are the hardest pokemon games, they are trolling

And yet it’s STILL harder than every other game simply because they gave the NPCs competent spreads and asymmetric advantages. Goes to show how poorly designed every game before USUM is.

I'm pretty sure BDSP's are barely better, which doesn't make up for the massive advantages the player gets simply for playing the game. A few EVs in a few stats doesn't make up for free damage and survivability. Items can attempt to close that gap but given how much more in favor of the player the advantages are, it's really hard to say the campaign is any harder.

But is BDSP's AI that much better? I mean, sure if the AI is literally broken in DP that does mean it's Gen 1 bad, but it certainly doesn't feel much better when you're actually playing the game.
                >Nope.
Surely you have some EXP calculations to back that up on a party-wide level, since that's generally the intended way to play Pokemon.
                >These only have a CHANCE of triggering while in DPPt I’m guaranteed to sweep everything just by sheer numbers advantage.
You're acting like you don't hit that sheer numbers advantage just as easily in BDSP, and given how common that RNG is I'm inclined to not believe you. One in 4 hits not killing you, one in 5 chances of a free status heal, all opponents moves being 90% accurate at best, and DOUBLED critical hit chance all at the same time are busted. If there was an item that did all of that it would definitely be on at least one Pokemon on every team.

Doesn't that mean that the E4 will give more EXP than the Platinum one, and if you happen to be slightly under-leveled it would mean that you would gain even more EXP making you more on par with Cynthia compared to her massive level spike in base DP?
                >The NPCs having actual EV spreads is why they’re harder.
Give me some damage calcs then, using reasonable levels and EV spreads from a casual play-through.
                >It’s noticeably harder than every single other game in the series with it on, including the garbage GC spin offs.
Nope, Game Cube titles were definitely harder overall, given every boss was actually designed and hard. Only the water and grass totem fights were particularly hard in SM, and USUM only adds Ultra Necrozma to the mix (I'll given them major props for making a different also reasonably difficult water totem). I do like USUM for the sidequests and worldbuilding, not to mention making Hau not fricking garbage, and the reasonable difficulty takes it over the top in being a game I actually like and would play through again if I could skip the cut-scenes. You're a sad man that only thinks about statistics but can't back it up with anything numerical so it's neither factual nor emotional.

Oops!

Actually the Chrono Trigger example is extremely relevant. In Chrono Trigger grinding is extremely difficult due to the way the encounter system works and it being the only real way to gain experience. In this game, it makes sense for party members not in combat to gain EXP, especially since it's very easy to know how many party members you have max. On the other hand, Pokemon has more encounters available and an unpredictable party, on top of other ways to gain and multiply EXP. In other words, what works for one wouldn't work for the other. It varies by game, but Pokemon can still learn from other games when it comes to these things. It's already halfway to a modern Xenoblad title's reserve EXP system, just put some elements from Go in there and the EXP you gain from catching Pokemon can be entirely re-defined.

DSgays don't actually play any video games outside of replaying the DS games over and over again and pretending they're hard, anon. They have no fricking clue how basic game design works.

      Not substantial changes.

For a DS game, this looks like shit. Compare it to BW and see the graphical difference, whatever that modder, Sylast, is doing, its gonna elevate Platinum to the point of replacing the original.

Reminder Gen 7 is a toggle game and the anti-toggle schizo has no right to bring it up if he does value consistent standards.

gen 7 with exp share on is more difficult than every other game so the toggle existing doesn’t affect my argument at all.

USUM is only hard if you ignore
    >roto-lotto
    >z-moves
    >affection bonuses which are easy as frick to max out as soon as you have poke pelago
and that's not even mentioning all the stuff you need to do in every pokemon game, like playing on set or not using items in battle
if someone says USUM are the hardest pokemon games, they are trolling

USUM is harder than Platinum even if you don’t ignore any of those.

Even with them, it is leagues harder than Platinum.
      And so is BDSP.
And you know that, which is why you need to claim anyone who says otherwise is trolling

I mean, it's fairly easy to ignore all those elements, just like it's easy to do slightly gimp yourself in other Pokemon games to maximize the fun. It's not like XY, which is trivial compared to the games immediately surrounding it, or SS, which is just really easy in general, or BDSP, which is a fricking joke and forces so much bonus on to you. The Gen 7 titles are easily the best designed of the post-gimmick titles, which is really unfortunate since even at best they're still scuffed. Like, the entire second island is designed like complete ass and is generally unfun to progress through and explore, the worst of both worlds. I appreciate them actually approaching bosses which are actually designed, but even then there's absolute duds like Totem Kommo-o, a boss so easy the only person to ever lose to him is the moron in this very thread who also couldn't beat BW with Tepig as his starter and only Pokemon which is what the speedrunners do. Literally the only time he had an argument about mashing A on your starter he couldn't do it, actual fricking chromosome hog.

now this i can agree with
also it's not really a dud but totem togedemaru is probably the least fun boss to ever be in a pokemon game.

        > The Gen 7 titles are easily the best designed of the post-gimmick titles
It’s easily the best designed of all the titles in the series because the devs remembered how to make actual boss fights.

A JRPG is more than just boss fights, so unfortunately it doesn't work out. The other three islands are merely okay in their map design, so you're missing out on an entire declensions of design in order to be the best. If we instead consider a game like Emerald, which has about three quarters of good map design and a fourth of borderline experimental ones, alongside a decently challenging main campaign and a number of interesting post-game challenges, even if we consider the duds in that it's overall a really strong title. Furthermore, if we just look at the "remembered how to make actual boss fights" part of it, that doesn't even track for all the bosses in either SM or USUM, so your statement isn't even entirely correct. I still think the Gen 7 titles are better than something like DP, or the weaker parts of many of the other games, but unfortunately it doesn't hit any of the peaks either. That's fine though, being above average is better than almost all the later titles and it's fine to not like perfect games. It doesn't crack my top 3 or 5 Pokemon games, but I'd still easily recommend USUM to most people.

            >muh map design
Platinum loses by default simply for having the most garbage poorly designed encounter tables in the series while still being linear and having an absurd over reliance on HMs you need to shove on your team just for worthless rewards. This isn’t a hill you want to die on if you’re trying to pretend Platinum is better.

I never once defended Platinum, moron. It's a shit game but it's not like most of the post-gimmick ones are better, Gen 7 being the major outlier and a good reason I keep bringing it up. Platinum does have some advantages over USUM, but HGSS has way more advantages, all of Platinum's advantages, and doesn't include Sinnoh's dogshit map design elements (it's a real shame they brought back time wasting bullshit in XY, it really doesn't help the game at all). Also, Platinum's encounter tables aren't even that bad, all things considered, especially compared to DP, holy shit those are bad.
