they're nitpicky morons who actively ignore the fact that 99% of the other games in the RPG genre is the same shit or worse, except they don't come with extensive mod support to fix the glaring issues like Skyrim does
RPG means you create a character with a certain backstory and personality, then the game tailors your experience based on the character you created. For example, you make a neutral evil thief character, and that gives you unique options in certain quests, because you're a c**t thief you can backstab and frick a lot of people over for your own benefit. But you will also miss out on certain content like the Mage's Guild and Fighter's Guild because it doesn't make sense for someone who specializes in burglary and stealth to join those guilds. Your dialogue options will be different compared to something like a lawful good character, and the main quest of the story will play out differently, there will be some reason to do it for your own gain rather than muh gotta save da world.
Skyrim doesn't give you any of this, you are the legendary dragonborn who will save the world from Alduin no matter what, you can become head of every guild even if you don't have the skills necessary to qualify, your only dialogue options are asking questions and making minor choices like whether you want Camilla Valerius to frick Sven, Faendal, or yourself, you can either the Stormcloaks or Imperials regardless of what race you are and what your character has done in the past. What's that? You're a high elf mage who mercilessly slaughtered the entire village of Riverwood for no reason? No problem bro, past is past, welcome to the Stormcloaks.
Skyrim is an open world action game more so than it is an RPG.
Yes if you play the role as your character as the Dragonborn etc.
It doesn't have as IN-DEPTH deep roleplaying as some games do but it passes as an action/adventure/RPG.
This is a really good take.
So is it an RPG or no? Give me a yes or no answer.
>dismiss 90% of rpgs
nice
There's really only a handful of RPGs that are worth playing.
>RPG means you create a character with a certain backstory and personality, then the game tailors your experience based on the character you created.
It doesn't, you are just trying to merge the definition from tabletop rpg and computer rpg.
Vidya RPGs originated directly from tabletop RPGs. The concept of hit points, skills, status effects etc were all invented by tabletop game designers such as Gary Gygax. Early vidya RPGs tried to emulate the tabletop experience which is why even up to the early 2000s you had games like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, KOTOR, etc.
Once the golden formula of success in the video game world was discovered (simplicity and action focus), virtually all games have primarily focused on that.
Also another reason is RPGs blow these days is because of fully voiced everything. All dialogue has to be agreed upon in advance and there's only so much budget devoted to hiring voice actors.
We need to return to a BG1/2 style voice system where only the first greeting is voiced and the rest is simply read. This will allow at least some voice, but also allow for there to be greater depth in the dialogue.
>RPG means you create a character with a certain backstory and personality
name one game in which you can choose your backstory in a meaninful way and also allows you to show a different personality by choice.
Come on i'll wait.
Just make your choices and justify them as you want. If you're playing a sneaky thief just don't do the mage college. If you think an altmer wouldn't join the stormcloaks, don't join them as an altmer.
All your problems can be resolved by just role-playing yourself in a way that is cohesive with the values of your characters. Seems like you wants the game to handhold you
It's an RPG, but a very streamlined one, to the point the roleplaying is becoming almost removed from the game mechanic and up to the player.
So while you can roleplay in skyrim, the game often fails to support it in a more glaring way than it's predecessors.
It's still an RPG, but it's much less of an RPG than what it should have been.
doesn't*
Dovahkiin turns 11 this year. Feel old yet? By the time the next elder scrolls releases he will probably have finished high school.
No role playing
Not an rpg
Cool amusement park though
if not for radiant quests I would actually consider skyrim to be a fairly good game
>flin
What a prostitute
You don't have to make any meaningful decisions. Quests don't even allow you to fail, the game constantly sucks your dick the moment you enter Whiterun and the dragonporn is a natural at anything he does. In previous Elder Scrolls you had to decide on what type of character you want to play. Are you good at magic or a fighter or thief? You couldn't switch your star sign randomly, in Daggerfall you even got neat little backstories. Yes this is not normie friendly, but this is how an RPG works.
Name your favorite RPGs.
Classic: Realms of Arkania trilogy
New: The Pathfinders and Kingdom Come Deliverance were excellent
>New: The Pathfinders and Kingdom Come Deliverance were excellent

>tranime
Stick to Skyrim, troony.
enjoy your braindead normalhomosexual power fantasies for weak men raised by single mothers
Yikes. Opinion safely and immediately discarded.
Why? They're are actual RPG's.
>Skyrim
>Not the textbook definition of normie power fantasy
dude I dont give a shit about skyrim, I just accept it for what it is.
>no age of decadence, no expeditions, no underrail, no knights of the chalice, no grimwah, no grimrock
you are legit just as bad as the people glorifying skyrim
The expedition games and age of decadence are good RPG's for sure, just not my favourite.
>just not my favourite
yeah because they aren't moronic power trip simulators
>Underrail
>isn't a moronic power trip simulator
Sir, you are a fricking moron.
>just not my favourite
Cause you're clueless about good RPGs.
That is pretty rich coming from a skyrimtroony.
Too plain to be a proper RPG, it's more of an action adventure game with RPG elements
I think when other genres and story elements take precedent over the story and the character the game forced YOU (the player) to come up with it stops being a "role playing" game and becomes a game in whatever genre it more accurately represents with systems akin to those in tabletop roleplaying games.
For example:
I play the incredibly long and bad introduction to skyrim. I make a green homie and I decide his story is that he's an illiterate mongoloid with minimal stats in everything except magic (loosely inspired by orks in warhammer). I then play the game and realize that MY ROLE, THE ROLE I DECIDED FOR MY CHARACTER, is not the TRUE story. The game actively wants you (the player) to be DRAGONBORN ruler of such and such powerful being from god-knows-where or whatever the frick, BUT I (THE FRICKING PLAYER) DECIDED THAT I WANT TO PLAY AS AN UNINTELLIGENT NEARLY MUTE GREEN homie WITH MAGIC POWERS.
See the issue? My dunce of a man is not special or the chosen one or anything of the sort, he's a green moron. The game wont let my character exist the way I want him to.
While the systems in place are akin to tabletops of olden days, the way in which your characters exist in the world are completely different and the way the game plays is mediocre in comparison to your imagination and the freedom of choice in an actual tabletop rpg.
Normally this would be fine in an RPG where you don't get to make your own character and is only a game to serve the purpose of a specific story the developers wanted to tell with the specific game mechanics the developers wanted to use (like every fricking JRPG ever), BUT IN CRPGS AND GAMES INFLUENCED BY THEM ALL OF THAT IS THROWN DOWN THE DRAIN, they give you this illusion of choice when it's never actually giving you any real fricking options.
You never get to be the green magic homie who is mentally moronic and has fun adventures because they're too busy forcing you into a role with the promise of creative freedom.
1/???
AT LEAST JRPGS LET ME BE THE CHARACTER THEY CHOSE FOR ME TO PLAY. In games like skyrim and fallout 3/NV/4 you will always be playing THEIR set up for this world. You can't just choose a place to exist from and make your own character, you are the man/woman that got shot in the head and survived, you are the Dragonborn, you are the vault dweller who is missing a relative. IF I WANTED A RAILROAD I WOULD JUST FRICKING PLAY ALL OF MY FAVORITE JRPGS BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THEY HAVE WELL DEFINED GOOD AND FUN ROLES FOR ME TO ACTUALLY FRICKING ROLE PLAY AS.
I'm not gonna sit here and let other people say "it's an rpg because it has rpg elements" cause that just isn't the fricking case, by this definition Bloons Tower Defense 6 (damn good game) is a role playing game. It isn't.
Skyrim at best is an open world rpg-like quest simulator. Until someone makes a game that throws you into a world after letting you decide where you came from and who you are (AND ACTUALLY FRICKING ADHERES TO THIS 100%) in a world like Skyrim's or Fallout's or whatever the frick shitty game you homosexuals play then I won't let you call them accurate to the core ideas of a ROLEPLAYING GAME.
It's as simple as that.
Don't give me the idea of agency if you want me to be the mary sue. I don't mind not being a character I created but if that's how it's gonna be don't fricking give me the option whatsoever.
>but you can just go wherever you want
YOU CAN DO THIS IN ANY FRICKING VIDEO GAME, YOU CAN JUST PLAY GTA
YOU CAN JUST PLAY FRICKING ANYTHING ELSE AND HAVE MORE FUN THAN SKYRIM
anyways this is probably the end of my rant since I know you homosexuals don't actually care or like anything beyond putting coomer mods into the game or modding it into being dark souls.
You seem to be confusing RPGs with absolutely limitless sandboxes that let you live out your fetish. Without restrictions the RPG is bad. If you can just do or say whatever you want, the RPG is bad. This is not roleplaying in the pen and paper sense, this is roleplaying in the I put on my fur suit sense. A good DM will kill your party if you act like morons.
>A good DM will kill your party if you act like morons.
a bad one actually.
Playing with morons is nice ,you don't even need rules or whatever just imagination, good buddies and a good dm that let you do whatever you want
>You seem to be confusing RPGs with absolutely limitless sandboxes that let you live out your fetish.
No. I don't want a limitless sandbox you dingus. I literally said I like JRPGs. I want a believable world that lets me CHOOSE how I want to exist within the said world (WHICH IS WHAT ALL THESE SHITTY GAMES OFFER YOU BUT DON'T DELIVER ON).
I don't mind a DM killing my character off for a dumb action my character decided to do. I don't mind the game having restrictions. I just want the game to actually let me do the bare minimum and let me create a character in the world the way I want him to be without needlessly attaching a shitty story to him/her that forces them into being a stereotypical mary sue that the whole world must bow to or die.
I like stories in games don't get me wrong but if I want a story then I play literally any of the hundreds of really good JRPGs that let me play as their anime mc. I am not going to play a game like Skyrim for it's RPG elements, if I'm playing Skyrim it's cause I have hundreds of mods installed and I can pretend for the briefest of moments that it isn't a janky fricking piece of shit that lets me actually be a character in this world that isn't a god-like being.
I also am not a degenerate furry I just looked up bloons td 6 porn and posted an image of one of the bloons because an image is more likely to get attention. I don't even like coomer games.
Like I said here, at least Elden Ring, Kenshi and Dragon's Dogma actually have the journey idea down before they make you overpowered. Two hours into Skyrim and you're basically already the strongest thing in the game.
Also this. Having fun is the entire point.
A good DM has strict rules on the world but if it's possible in the real world then generally speaking it's possible within the game. I know it's impossible to make a video game that is like that but like I said, that is what they fricking promise you in games like Skyrim.
>mobileshit, furry porn, jrpgs, and yugioh
damn dude you are absolute shit taste personified
>Two hours into Skyrim and you're basically already the strongest thing in the game.
Have you even played Skyrim dumbass? Go fight a bear or a snow troll after you leave the tutorial dungeon. You'll be dead in seconds.
>Go fight a bear or a snow troll after you leave the tutorial dungeon. You'll be dead in seconds.
Are you moronic? An easily kited enemy with the starter fire spell everyone gets for some reason.
record a video of you killing a frost troll right after the tutorial, you can spawn it with a console command if you don't know where to look
I'll wait
>implying i have troonyrim installed
record a video of you kys
No it was pretty obvious you were talking out of your ass
Playing video games is too hard for you estrogen infused freaks
You obviously don't have much experience with the game then. Your starting magic isn't strong enough to take down a wild bear and he WILL run up and swipe you dead in 1-2 hits. And lets not even get into how there's also Giants in the game that you ought to stay far far away from initially. Shouldn't even have bothered with a clueless imbecile like you.
Do you know what kiting means? It's very easily done because the Skyrim pathfinding AI is moronic.
Nah, I remember there being a frost troll very early in the Skyrim MQ, the one in front of the monastery on the mountain.
You can stop and sit down now, loser.
I accept your concession you autogynephile skytroony.
>Skyrim pathfinding AI
>A good DM has strict rules on the world but if it's possible in the real world then generally speaking it's possible within the game. I know it's impossible to make a video game that is like that but like I said, that is what they fricking promise you in games like Skyrim.
honestly skyrim with mods is close to hit ,unfortunaly there's limitations but if you want something ,there's probably a mod for it.
Not skyrim but i even remember a mod on fallout 4 where enemies could surrend and then you could take them as captive or even rape them.
>coombrain lol
Just do whatever you want ,it has always been the thing of rpg not "achually you can't because i decided to because i'm the dm and we will be serious."
homosexuals like that are the worst, most of those people on vrpg are just talking about their waifus shit kek .Fricking soys
"Go wherever you want. Do whatever you want" Todd Howard.
That's how he promotes his games. You think you know better than him?
RPG are supposed to fulfill your fantasies. Not restrict you.
Todd has been selling games to the dewrito crowd since oblivion. He doesn't care about making a good game.
Whether or not they are hardcore RPGs is another matter, but all of his games are undoubtedly fun. It's why people sink thousands of hours into them.
>He doesn't care about making a good game.
I certainly am not the NUMBA WON Todd fan but this is not true. Garfi...Starfield is huge risk business wise. Untested, new IP in the notoriously niche space opera mold which already looks like a less soiboish No Mans Sky. If he were in for the money he would aggressively expand the production company (they still hover at around 100 active developers) and rapidly pump out TES-Fallouts like turds coming out of a deers ass
>"Go wherever you want. Do whatever you want"
>NO LEVITATION
You lied Todd, you lied
Go to nexus.com and download levitation mod :^)
>daggerfall should be out for christmas
>posted in 1995
Good to see todd got started early
one last thing I'd like to add.
Dragon's Dogma and Elden Ring are just infinitely more fun and closer to RPGs than anything a western developer has ever made. Kenshi is close to being everything skyrim failed at being but it's janky as hell and most elements are not fun to actually play through (i.e the combat just sorta automatically happening and has very little actual depth, it's just moving around and making sure all your characters are not hitting eachother. The way the world is set up there is very little actual roleplaying to be had because it's actually a farming game. No dungeons, lore is kinda mediocre, the world is just fallout but better. overall just an okay game)
despite it's flaws however, Kenshi is way more of an RPG than any fricking elder scrolls game.
I love DD, ER and also Skyrim 🙂
You are me and you are my Black person
Oh wait you have autism, and here I was telling you to use your intelligence, what was I thinking.
You won't ever appreciate how good skyrim is and that's ok, your brain is just wired in a different way. Just understand that your notion of what us or isn't enjoyable is highly subjective and mostly due to the peculiar condition you have
>You won't ever appreciate how good skyrim is and that's ok, your brain is just wired in a different way.
I don't have autism I am just directly combatting the idea that skyrim is this grand adventure that can be played any way you want.
That just is not the case.
It's fun at times sure. It's just not anywhere near as good as everyone says and the main reason people buy it 3 times in a row is for porn mods.
> Just understand that your notion of what us or isn't enjoyable is highly subjective and mostly due to the peculiar condition you have
I never argued my opinion wasn't subjective, but the fact that everyone just says "ignore the story" when it's literally the most fun you can have in the base game and the most advertised part of the game AND the part of the game with the most actually fun game mechanics it's kinda hard to do that.
Like I said, there is no good way to roleplay in base Skyrim. I can mod it and just play that but then I'm not playing the game that Bethesda made, I'm playing the game that I tailor made using Bethesda's game as a template.
"bro you're autistic, your opinion is worth less than mine"
says the autistic person defending a billion dollar company who can't even make a game that is even somewhat as good as a real tabletop game.
You gave autism my diagnostic is as good as it gets, it's not a problem but check with a specialist and he will confirm.
I'm not defending Bethesda I don't care about their interests, it doesn't matter to me if you pirate the game or buy it, I'm merely explaining why skyrim is a great game and I hope more similar games are made.
I had high hopes for fallout 4 but it failed by imposing too much of a backstory and personality to your character and by giving you frick all to do appart from boring radiant quests and following the moronic story
>The game actively wants you (the player) to be DRAGONBORN ruler
Just never do the main quest and skip every dialogues, don't even engage with any quest just be a murderhobo.
If there's one game that let you create any character you want it's skyrim but you have to use your imagination, you can't expect the game to tailor its main quest anticipating any background you can imagine
>If there's one game that let you create any character you want it's skyrim but you have to use your imagination, you can't expect the game to tailor its main quest anticipating any background you can imagine
I can and will
>Just never do the main quest and skip every dialogues
BRO JUST IGNORE THE GAME THEY MADE
>don't even engage with any quest just be a murderhobo.
LOOOL JUST KILL EVERYONE
ok c**t I have done this and it's fun don't get me wrong but the game actively goes against what I was roleplaying as and the main quest is really the most fun you can have playing skyrim.
I mean at the very least the game could have some options for "beating' the game that isn't doing the main quest. I just think that skyrim is barely an RPG and it's fine but people saying you can be anyone you want are just lying. the truth would be: YOU CAN BE ANYONE YOU WANT (IF YOU IGNORE THE STORY)
which is fine
but don't tell me i can do anything and go anywhere when the game will actively destroy your immersion if you try doing that
idk why people get so upset when i tell them this, it's just a video game at end of the day
>BRO JUST IGNORE THE GAME THEY MADE
Of you decide to roleplay as a character who would ignore the main quest then obviously do so. You're lot losing any content, you can always do the main quest with a character that would do it. You can do any quest but you aren't meant to.
>I have done this and it's fun
So you are having fun, why do you pretend that you don't like the game?
>don't get me wrong but the game actively goes against what I was roleplaying as and the main quest is really the most fun you can have playing skyrim.
The main quest is shit and the most fun I've had with the game is role-playing as a specific character and making up my own quest with my own backstory. One of my character hated elves and killed any elf he met if he could get away with it. Another cared about nothing but money and just traveled from town to town to buy and sell goods. Another was a misanthropic alchemist and just lived in the middle of nowhere to work of potions.
The possibilities are limitless when you are creative and no game let you this amount of freedom. If you play it as a quest generator or an action game skyrim is average at best, but if you play it as an rpg sandbox it's without equal.
Okay then this is down to personal preference cause I only really had fun modding and playing the main story. I think the sidequests are shit.
>You're lot losing any content, you can always do the main quest with a character that would do it. You can do any quest but you aren't meant to.
Not doing the story doesn't give you the shouts which are the most fun I've had in skyrim
>So you are having fun, why do you pretend that you don't like the game?
I'm not pretending I don't like the game but the reasons why I am making these posts is
Being fun and actually being a good game are two different things.
Because being fun alone doesn't exempt something from criticism.
Because I am tired of people saying it's a great RPG when the most fun I've had in the basegame is doing the main story and there is no way to reach a win condition without doing that. It's inherently flawed game design to say "you can do anything" "you can go anywhere" "you can be anyone" etc when you literally can not do those things and still beat the game.
the win condition is possibly the most important thing in a video game and if you can't reach it without sacrificing your character's background then it's failing to immerse you in the world.
I am fairly creative and I generally do just make characters in games, skyrim isn't a goto game for doing that imo though. Kenshi is just better for this all around and I do just play kenshi for doing specific characters and builds. It has more actual roleplaying than skyrim.
"You're autistic, I said so"
I literally am not, I've been diagnosed. I don't think skyrim is bad, it's a fine game I am just criticizing it and saying it's not an RPG. That's all I've done.
If it's autism to say that your character is literally always the Dragonborn in skyrim then I have autism and all of you have schizophrenia. Like someone else in this thread said "you're predestined to become dragonborn" or someshit which basically just proves my point.
The only way to roleplay in Skyrim is to deliberately avoid quests with the foreknowledge that they'll contradict your character's class or alignment
So just do that? But if players want to do all the quests then they can do that as well. Freedom is what RPGs are all about. Freedom to go wherever and do whatever.
>reddit spacing
I "bought" this game just for Khajiit and Argonian breasts
It would be a pretty good game if it didn't have 1000 bugs and stupid frick ups to slowly ruin your experience.
Looting chests and come across a strange item? welp its stuck in your inventory til you complete that quest, you also havent even started the quest yet and have no idea where you go to start it. Good luck and dont mind now having 5 pounds less of item burden. Now have that happen 6 times.
Have you played Skyrim recently? I played the anniversary edition recently and encountered zero bugs. There's also the unofficial patch available to further iron everything out.
I legit installed the remaster on switch last weekend and it's just as buggy as the day it came out. at least 5 glitches within the first 15 minutes.
Yea I've never played the Switch version. Atleast the home consoles (PS4/Xbox) also got the unofficial patch through mod support so there's that.
I'm playing AE at the moment and I've encountered a few glitches (admittedly with almost 200 mods), but a lot have been in TES since Morrowind and several are in Fallout 4 too.
>use a door to enter a new cell. The door plays its animation but the cell doesn't start loading.
>mannequins load NPC AI and start walking around
>followers won't fricking follow. I run off and the c**t stays behind admiring the view.
>I'm getting the shit kicked out of me and my follower's AI is completely passive. Even if they get hit by a spell or grenade they just tell the enemy to stop. Otherwise hostile NPCs ignore them
I'm not a mod-hater or anything but 200 mods seems overkill. Might want to tone it down if you expect your game to run smoothly. I think Skyrim/Fallout 4 have 100 limit on consoles.
>mannequins load NPC AI and start walking around
I would be spooked if this happened.
The homosexuals who claim Skyrim isn't an RPG are the ones who still play tabletop garbage in this day and age or glorify the absolutely moronic tabletop systems from their childhood.
You can safely ignore these mouthbreathing morons as they are more interested in wasting your time writing paragraphs of forum posts and splitting hairs rather than playing video games.
At least they aren't autogynephile troons. Kys.
tabletop garbage is filled with more trannies than your twitter account
but you already knew that you troony
So the ones who say Skyrim isn't an RPG are people that play actual RPGs? Imagine my fricking shock.
I guess video games that don't allow you to select your pronouns aren't "actual RPGs" for you tabletop trannies
Wow sad to see trannies living rent free in your head, all because Skyrim is a fricking shitty RPG and a mediocre action adventure game.
rent free is all you can afford playing board games with your homeless friends
lmao at your life
Based.
This is your average Skyrim player, a mentally ill troon getting off on his self-insert having titty physics. This is the type of people arguing that this game has any substance.
Truly loathsome people.
>yikes oof sweaty you're enjoying females
>how problematic
cope, seethe and dilate, we know you can't jerk off with your axe wound.
let's be honest... if you play as a woman then you're fricking gay. no buts or ifs. simple as that bro.
don't care what you think trannoid, you don't even know what a woman is.
if you role-play as the female character and go "damn she's sexy" then you are a literal autogynephile. you're becoming the woman you wish you had. saddest shit ever. the lowest point a man could reach. basically a troony but even more sad.
>you role-play as the female
stop projecting trannoid
then what else do you do? really explain. what do you do? how do you justify willingly putting yourself in a woman's shoes and acting out a woman's experience in a game?
>keeps repeating "troony" to convince people he isn't one
sounds like you have a projection problem, not me.
I jerk off to women. Hard for you to grasp now that you have a festering wound in your crotch.
you jerk off to being a woman. if you "just jerk off to women" then why not just watch porn and do it? instead you have to play a game and pretend to be the woman. why do this? seriously, think what that says about you as a man.
>you jerk off to being a woman
more projection from a trannoid
literally cannot fathom anyone not being a autogynephiliac like yourself
Not everyone in this world likes to self insert to any fictional media character you dumbfrick troony.
Right now I played modded skyrim and I designed the dragonborn just like Melina in elden ring, even named her Melina as well because I thought its funny to see that character in skyrim world. I didnt self insert as that character, I treat that character just like when I played Ezio in assassin creed or Geralt in witcher. But of course troony like you always thought everyone in the world is a self insert gay, kys.
says the dude that stares at man ass for hours
You aren't staring at ass though, unless you're ruled by your dick.
Besides, playing third person is gay, period. If my game doesn't have first person, it is not my game.
Seethe Harder
Pic related is the cover of the very first Elder Scrolls game. Coom bawds go hand in hand with Fantasy RPGs and something fans of the genre often want to see included. This is coming from someone who plays Skyrim on console with no mods.
There are women with their breasts out (some even nude) in Daggerfall and Battlespire, mostly the enemies, though. Redguard women in Arena and Daggerfall also wore particularly revealing clothing.
that era doesn't exist anymore. even if the new elder scrolls game has redguard b***hes in it, you'll neeeever see any fricking breasts ploppin' about, never ever ever ever and fricking ever. the twitter mob won't allow it.
Considering the games have official mod support that era is never going to be over.

I ain't playing that shit, homie.
You need atleast 500+ hours to even understand what Skyrim is trying to accomplish. Being serious here. It's supremely popular for a reason.
TES fills the Final Fantasy niche of WRPGs. It's not supposed to be a grognard-y game. Its adapting the WRPG formula to a mass appeal market. In doing so it has outsold every single player game in existence. Todd won btw.
>first western game to achieve a perfect score from the Japanese
>JRPG worshipping gays on this board shit on it and pretend le Elden Ring is wholly original and inspired when it’s creator said Oblivion is one of his favorite games ever created
Imagine being Todd. You have all these fat moronic autists trying to shit on you. Meanwhile the guys they worship see you as an idol to emulate. Beyond based
I've always loved Todd and am incredibly grateful to him. He's probably accomplished more for video games in the RPG/Fantasy genre than anyone on this planet. Elden Ring, Zelda BOTW, Witcher 3, Dragon's Dogma... all inspired by Skyrim and probably wouldn't exist as they are without it.
Here's Itsuno (Director of Dragon's Dogma and Elden Ring) admitting Skyrim holds the crown when it comes to RPGs.
Personally though, my favorite RPG currently is Elden Ring.
>and Elden Ring
Sorry I meant Devil May Cry*
RPG doesn't mean anything anymore. Basically everything is an RPG. The only labels that still make sense at all are things like ARPG, MMO, JRPG, etc.
>extremely limited character building and there are FPS games with more complex character building
>little to no agency throughout the story and side quests
It's more of an action adventure game like botw than it is a rpg
>puts you in the shoes of Dragonborn regardless of what you want
This is fine because the Dragonborn is just a destined title and you become it during the course of the game. Your character could still be anyone from anywhere before the game starts and it works. The problems arise when the games start predefining your backstory and who your character is BEFORE you’re even playing as them like Fallout 4 did.
I guess this is a fair argument but I still think it ruins the fun and immersion a lot of the time because my character was not intended to be the kind of character that would become an important figure.
Being destined to become the Dragonborn for my character was and still is a ridiculous idea and it just ruins my fun. The game forces it on you and basically locks you out of content until you simply agree to become the Dragonborn by completing the story quests.
It wasn't accidental. I literally was talking about Bloons in that post. It also literally is not a furry. A furry artist probably drew that but it's definitely not a furry, blimps don't have fur nor are they animals. I guess it does count as inflation because blimps are literally inflated and full of gas so you win this round. Why are you so obsessed with the idea of my pure, smooth blimps being furries? Does it irk you (an animal) that I can only get off to the seductive look of blimps full of explosive gasses that would destroy monkey civilization if not popped?
You know you can just ignore the Dragonborn quests right? The game forces nothing on you. If you want to be a Thief then just go straight to Riften and join the Thieves Guild. Consider those as your "main quests" from then on. I see now that most Skyrim "critics" on Ganker are just braindead wastes of skin that lack any semblance of imagination.
Why would you join the Thieves' Guild when the quest line is so fricking atrocious? Even the Companions isn't as bad as the fricking Thieves' Guild.
It is literally the main quest. It is literally incentivized to do it because it gives you the most fun you can have in that game. The shouts were literally one of the most advertised things in the game.
sure you could effectively ignore the actual fricking game but then you'd be losing because you are ACTIVELY IGNORING THE WIN CONDITION.
frick you moron
maybe make multiple endings that can happen instead of just one questline that actually rolls the credits if you want me to actually roleplay.
also what
said
a lot of the quests just are not as good as the main quest. there is not the same attention to detail or fun to be had there.
you are incentivized to play they way THEY want you to play so why would you actively choose to play in a way that would not get you the sweet release of steam achievements.
>The games FORCES you!!!
No you can play differently.
>I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT
Just frick off already you miserable shitstain. Also, if you like the shouts so much then just look for them without investing in the main quest? I believe you should be able to just look for shouts on your own wherever after killing the first Dragon outside Whiterun.
It is effectively the same thing as forcing you if you can't beat the game without doing it.
If I get the shouts after beating the dragon then I am still the Dragonborn, that doesn't fix the issue.
I didn't say I didn't want to play ignoring the main quest either. If I could skip the main quest and still beat the game I fricking would play it like that but I can't so I wont.
I literally asked "why would I do that?" because there is no incentive to do so and those quests are not as good as the main quest. also see this post
I could just play a game that is actually a good rpg instead of playing within the limitations of this mediocre quest simulator. you're basically not human if you disagree.
I do play it like this generally but you can't just say "bro you can do anything" when there is no reason to do so. There is no adventure to be had in not having fun. Don't get me wrong Skyrim can be fun at times but it's not fun to roleplay in it (because all the fun shit in the base game is tied to main quest) and it can hardly be called roleplaying. You have to actively detach yourself from what the game presents you as if you want to roleplay and that's just against what roleplaying is all about.
Sounds like your mind is too pigeon-holed for RPGs. Especially ones as immersive and holding as much breadth as Skyrim. Stick to whatever obscure trash you play. The ones who enjoy Skyrim aren't limited by things such as the """"main quest""" and steam achievements.
I literally play tons of RPGs and have lots of fun doing so, my whole argument is that Skyrim is not one. I also didn't say I didn't enjoy playing Skyrim, just that anything other than the main quest is not as good and not worth doing seeing as the main quest is where the actual game mechanics and fun are.
I don't care if you think it's small brained to not disengage with the story but the story is what they clearly put the most effort into and it shows. It's a pretty good story all things considered. I am just pointing out that in Skyrim you are always the Dragonborn and there is no way to not be the Dragonborn unless you actively ignore the whole fun part of the game and play shitty sidequests that are not as good.
I also think when you give up on trying to roleplay as your character in skyrim and start to roleplay as the Dragonborn it becomes more fun.
Dungeons & Dragons
Call of Cthulhu
Icons
GURPS (and whatever version of GURPS you want to play)
Most tabletop RPGs in general
If you mean video games than basically none but I don't agree with his definition of RPG in general so it's fine.
Why are you even in this thread if you don't like video game RPGs?
see
>they are more interested in wasting your time writing paragraphs of forum posts and splitting hairs rather than playing video games.
I do like video game RPGs. I just don't think Skyrim is an RPG.
List of RPGs that I like:
Planescape Torment
Phantasy Star (2-4)
Phantasy Star Online (whole series)
Pokemon Emerald
Shin Megami Tensei (whole series)
Final Fantasy (most of the games)
Persona (1,2,3 and 5, didn't really like 4 but it's okay)
Grandia 1-3
Diablo 1 and 2
Torchlight 1 and 2
Wild Arms 1-3 and the remaster of 1
Dragon's Dogma
Elden Ring (and the rest of the souls game except ds1)
Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Monster Hunter (basically all of them except 1 and world)
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Monster Rancher 1-5
E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy
Bioshock 1-2
.hack imoq
.hack g.u
and lots more that I can't be assed to post right now.
see how most of these games don't tell you that you can be anything you want and do anything? see how these games give you who you are with minimal choices in that department and tell you to be a part of their world. Unlike Skyrim which puts you into a position from the get go, in these games the story tells you what you're going to be and then you fricking just are that.
These are GOOD RPGs, Skyrim however is not an RPG because if it was you'd be moronic to classify it as anything but a BAD RPG.
I am still playing games as we speak.
>monster hunter
>RPG
lmao, this is why you don't take these morons seriously
>monster hunter isn't an rpg
>you don't role play as a monster hunter in monster hunter
>you don't have common rpg mechanics in monster hunter
these are moron takes. have a nice day
>>you don't role play as a monster hunter in monster hunter
You don't roleplay as the dragonborn in skyrim?
>>you don't have common rpg mechanics in monster hunter
You don't.
Again this is why you don't take these morons seriously. They are more interested in splitting hairs than making a single coherent point.
Well said. Best to just ignore his ilk.
>takes
back to twitter troon
By that definition every game is an RPG. Prime characteristics of video game RPG's are choice/consequence, either in the narrative or gameplay (settling on builds). Both characteristics that Skyrim lacks. Only thing Skyrim is is a casual pastime for normalgays (back when it came out) and escapism for troons who enjoy self-inserting as bimbos, knowing they will never pass in real life (current player base).
>either in the narrative or gameplay (settling on builds). Both characteristics that Skyrim lacks
What the frick are you talking about?
Have you actually played skyrim?
>game had a hard level cap forcing you to get perks based on your playstyle
>civil war is a direct narrative split
literally more choice than most infinity engine garbage but I doubt you think that even a single infinity engine game isn't an RPG.
>the story tells you what you're going to be and then you fricking just are that
>Dimwit thinks Bioshock is an RPG but Skyrim isn't
So Hitman series is RPG because you play the role of a Hitman?
Bioshock has RPG mechanics and you roleplay as Jack.
Bioshock literally has dungeon like levels, monsters you fight, a progression system akin to tabletops etc.. How is it not an RPG?
I haven't played a single Hitman game so maybe?
There are progression systems that are just like the ones in tabletops in all of those games. Monster Rancher 1-2 just barely count I'll give you that but the rest of them are fully RPGs
You can ONLY roleplay as the Dragonborn in Skyrim but it gives you the promise of doing whatever the hell you want and being whatever the hell you want. It simply does not fit the trend of any good video game RPGs. Stats are also just so unimportant in the game because no matter what you do you'll always be strong enough to take on the main quest (which is the only thing that matters as you can't roleplay as anything but the Dragonborn in skyrim and is the only fun to be had in the game)
Like I said rpg-like quest simulator
not really an rpg
a good rpg wouldn't lie and tell me I can do anything when I can't even be a green moronic guy who isn't special and does magic
Also Monster Hunter is literally Phantasy Star Online set in a fantasy setting where you hunt monsters. The progression and stats are literally mechanics from role playing games.
Action RPGs are still RPGs
MMORPGs are still RPGs
Immersive SIms are heavily influenced by tabletop game design so by my definition of what an RPG is they count.
Yeah, most games are RPGs, it is literally the most influential genre.
However if they don't feature a big emphasis on progression and levels and an immersive explorable world then I don't count them. Skyrim isn't immersive to me. Skyrim stats don't really make me feel like I've accomplished anything, the game is easy and always was all the way through.
I think personally though it needs to have a progression system that makes you better (number go up) and actually have roles that are fun.
>You can ONLY roleplay as the Dragonborn in Skyrim
As opposed to Monster hunter where you can only roleplay as a monster hunter?
>Yeah, most games are RPGs, it is literally the most influential genre.
lmao
Yes but you have actually varying different builds and meaningful progression on top of an explorable and fun world. Skyrim has none of that.
Bioshock literally has more options in ways to play and different builds than any quest in Skyrim.
Simply being able to roleplay as something doesn't make it a roleplaying game. The mechanics matter moreso than anything else and there is barely any meaningful RPG mechanics/progression in Skyrim. You are always strong, your build does not matter cause eventually you'll just max out everything, money is basically useless because the story gives you everything you need to win.
as opposed to Bioshock where you have to manage resources, craft shit, choose which plasmids/weapons you use/upgrade, explore the spooky dungeon like ruins of rapture, experience a well thought out story that is told through all of the level design (jaquay-ed dungeons essentially) and audio logs (like handouts in tabletops)
everything you do matters
your progression varies wildly on every playthrough
you can play this pre-established world any way you want.
In Skyrim you are always the dragonborn and there is never any reason to do things differently cause it all feels like shit (except for the shouts and some magic), isn't immersive and the only fun things are tied to the main quest.
I literally admitted it's RPG-like but it just isn't a real RPG. It's a fine game just not an RPG.
>on top of an explorable and fun world
its literally all instanced areas separated by a loading zone
How much drugs are you on right now?
>its literally all instanced areas separated by a loading zone
The instanced areas are literally more interesting and fun to roam around in than all of skyrim. they literally have more in common with rpg design than most of skyrim
open world idealistically is more like an rpg but nobody has ever done a good open world (except notch with minecraft)
>You can roleplay as Jack in Bioshock = RPG
>You can roleplay as the Dragonborn in Skyrim =/= RPG
>skyrim isn't an RPG
>but monster hunter, bioshock, fricking monster rancher are
>ACTIVELY IGNORING THE WIN CONDITION.
You make your own win condition in Skyrim. That's the best part. Go wherever you want, do whatever you want. Steam achievements mean nothing to Godd Howard.
>That was not a furry, it is literally a blimp
>accidentally post you furry inflation porn
>i-its not furry
I like video games 😀
Based. Me too :3
What have you been playing Anon-kun?
I did reinstall Skyrim recently because I like going back to Bethesda games every once in a while to mess around in them for a bit. Other than that just replaying some old games on my retropie box cause I got the itch to play Shining Force again.
It’s a good standalone game, but an awful Elder Scrolls
10/10 best and most intricate porn game and H RPG I ever played.
Needs a lot of addons slapped on top to make it playable tho, would never play this shit without them.
How many copies of skyrim do you own? I have;
Xbox 360
Ps4
Psvr
Steam
Steam vr
Switch
X360 and PC when it first came out. Todd gave me Special Edition for free
I love it and so does Ganker, just look at the daily threads discussing about the lore and politics of the game. Everyone here played it for hundreds of hours and got immersed in its universe, but Gankertards are tsudere about liking a popular game so they'd rather nitpick its many flaws than accept it was overall a true masterpiece
I have grown to appreciate it but I can see its flaws very clearly. The extreme streamlining is really evident as you are missing basic spell effects that used to be commonplace in both oblivion and morrowind.
I would be hard pressed to even call Skyrim an action game because of the way combat and AI works in it. Its barely a step above tab targeting MMO combat.
>it was overall a true masterpiece
More than that Skyrim was a phenomenon and managed to bring in a whole new audience into Fantasy/Role-playing games. More so than any other RPG perhaps.
ttrpg definition
You role play with table top game rules
vgrpg definition
>uhm, achually, the uh, mechanics-
Video Games > Traditional Games
Why should I have to sit with sweaty strangers in some randoms basement when I could just boot up Morrowind instead.
unlike ttrpgs you're limited by what the developers make
so the mechanics and level/world design are the only things that define a vgrpg
The issue is most mechanics are transferable from one genre to another, the only thing that should actually matter is if you can emulate actual roleplay or not. Dialogue choices, alternate ways to approach questline, etc.
eh
I think having isolated stories stylized like roleplaying is fine since it's literally impossible to emulate a real tabletop accurately
you'll never have moments where players find out a way to climb Cthulhu and somehow survive
or doing silly things like having a higher strength stat than some high level enemies and suplexing them like wrestler in d&d.
Your imagination is wider and vaster than any video game so it's just currently impossible to turn that into a game.
This is part of why I think games like Bioshock and System Shock are more like RPGs than something like Skyrim where a lot of it is just loosely themed like a fantasy RPG with no actual mechanics that make how you progress and how you approach situations different (the mechanics are also incredibly lenient and the world design is incredibly forgiving). There is also no moments in which you can do something that takes imagination to succeed that isn't just breaking the game using glitches or falling on the intended design for alternate routes.
Puzzle solving in ImSims is the closest thing to solving puzzles in a real tabletop but even then it kinda falls flat. The worlds in ImSims are also pretty close to those in real tabletop games but it's hit or miss a lot of the time.
I don't think it should be always attempting to copy the tabletop experience because then only role 20 and tabletop sim and games like baldurs gate would ever count as RPGs and we'd have no definition for JRPGs and wizardry-likes. We'd also lose out names for games like vangers where it's unlike anything else i've ever played but has elements of RPGs and racing games.
yo todd, how's it hangin'? still shilling skyrim, i see...
I have never downloaded a single coomer mod for any Bethesda or similar games.
