to be fair this isn't the first time this has happened. i remember when they did the intergral version of mgs (for the japanese release) they found out about the liberties with the translation (for better or worse) and ended up having to retranslate the entire games subtitles for the japs that wanted to play the game with jap subs but eng voices. apparently kojima was pissed and from that point on severly limited and watched over what the translators could do. to give you an idea, blaustein (the mgs translates) had essentially an all access pass to see shit he as a translator shouldn't have seen during the dev (stuff unrelated to translation) while he was in japan and not in Massachusetts translating, after this agnes kaku (the translator of mgs2) had to run her translations by multiple people to get approved. only difference is that back then this shit was rightfully criticized whereas now it's seen as a plus for some reason

        Anonymous

Kaku wasn't the translator on MGS2, that's just how she presents herself. MGS2, and all the games after, had translation teams. It's just that 1 was done on the cheap so they just had one guy.

It's pretty obvious that Kaku didn't have a whole lot of work that actually made it into the final game without getting rewritten by one of her colleagues, you can find her version of the Tanker script online and compare it to the final game. Thanks Kojimbo and the unsung heroes who actually translated MGS2, you saved us from lines like "you're not in kansas anymore dorothy" and "slipping a mickey finn in my OJ".

I think rpg voice acting is on a completely different dimension than other games. There are often thousands of lines to voice act, and the voice acting is not part of a regular scene, it's thousands of disconnected lines for different possible conversations that can play out in different orders. I think it's pretty much necessary that the voice acting is a bit robotic there. I wonder if AI can do something about that

The whole American anime dubbing scene (which extends to "anime games") seems to be owned by a small clique of actors, who have decided their corny Cartoon Network shit is what everyone wants, instead of stuff that just sounds good and naturalistic like Dark Souls.

anime/game dubbers aren't cartoon network actors. sure there is some crossover for some actors, but a lot of anime dub actors ONLY do anime dubs.

Anime dub acting and Cartoon Network voice acting are different. If you just listen to samples of each without knowing where they come from you can usually still distinguish them. Anime dub acting sounds like the type of performance you'd hear on children's educational programs like Dora the Explorer. The pace of speech is weird in both because you have to match the preexisting lip flaps in dubs and speak slowly for kids to understand in educational shows. Whereas with other cartoons the actors can speak at natural paces and the animators will animate around that.

              Anonymous

There’s also the thing where anime always has to have characters exclaim their thoughts, regardless of demographic, which makes it feel juvenile no matter how you view it.

If anything, Cartoon Network and places like that is the dream goal rather than anime. Getting a regular role on a series rather than just doing some random RPG or single season of an anime or something. Not to mention the fact that the animation is animated around your performance rather than having to make your performance fit the animation. Like I imagine Ben Diskin got paid more and probably enjoyed doing Numbah One more, compared to voicing Joseph Joestar or being in Trials of the Cold Steel stuff

      pole here
i grew up on polish dubbing like basically everyone else here, but since my parents were planning to migrate to either england or australia at some point i played a frickton of english-only games and watched english-only movies, so i guess i have a good comparison
polish dubbing features LOTS of gems arguably better than the english original, it wasn't rare to hear that the PL version was admired by the EN voice acting section too, but over gradually things got worse, far worse
and here's a very simple explanation
Actual trained/educated movie/theater actors stopped doing voiceovers. A trend I've noticed both here and there. Either because, well, they died, many of them were old fricks, or because of some recession regarding their acting careers. Now you can see a frickton of newbies with no experience or education in that field whatsoever, which is almost never the case in Japan. Even those born in like 2003 are doing voice acting schools.
Not in the western sphere, however. And the problem becomes even bigger in english voice acting of anime/video games, ESPECIALLY japanese video games - it's a niche within a niche and even if it's a lot better than it used to be weeb content simply isn't seen as equal. If nobody wants to pick up those roles then you'll find somebody who will, eventually, but the quality will be questionable.
It's not to say that there aren't good voiceovers for weeb things, see Cowboy Bebop or Persona 5 (good doesn't equal better though), but you can very clearly see the recurring problem.

Swede here, and my observation is almost exactly the same as yours. I guess the main exception is that they started casting contemporary popstars in Disney movies almost since the nineties here, but always sprinkled in a bunch of theatre actors as well (still do but to a smaller degree) and comedians, to kind of emulate the American way of casting kids movies I suppose.

If you want a good example of a character with a massive difference in performance between the two languages, there's that one "bilingual" c**t in Death Stranding you have to carry around early on in the game. I believe it is due to the person knowing the language inside and out, they think in it and they live the language. So then some vidya characters using those words somehow sound off.

          Anonymous

          This is true.
It’s very common in music too.
There was some study made by some analyst who discovered that people who love stuff like kpop or jrock often like it because since they’re singing in a language they don’t understand, and the music makes them feel good, the singing sort of becomes “flawless” because the brain mainly picks up that they’re hearing something they really like.
I can vouch for that shit myself to a degree, as there are some specific subgenres that I like when it’s from Japan, but can’t stand when it’s in English. Not knowing the language sort of transcends genres sometimes.

Not knowing the language makes the vocals of a song another instrument, and you can enjoy the energy of it without the meaning of the words distracting you.

It’s because Kson sounds like an absolute moron when she speaks English. She puts on this fake tard accident that’s supposed to appeal to neckbeards. She is literally American yet chooses to sound moronic.
