That's only if lose them right? Not if I refine them - because they become lost forever yeah? Otherwise wouldn't it be possible to just keep modding Laguna over and over?

It is possible, but you have to find the card again. It just randomly moves after you get it from its initial location.

Oh AMAZING! Thanks Anon. I always saved my best cards from refining since I thought they'd be gone forever.
If I can get them back then it makes it even easier for me to get those items low level. I wonder if they go back to their original user if you refine them.

To be fair, (as someone who loves 8), the gameplay blows even when played properly. Square can't into gameplay. Even better games like Secret of Mana have stupid shit in place (like not allowing you to combo, but having to wait for enemies to recover). Kingdom Hearts is one of their better mechanical attempts, but it even falls short of playing well.

I got cards as they naturally dropped. The only time you really want to work on getting a specific card is if you want an easy way to obtain Heroes for the Omega Weapon fight. That's the Laguna card. You can make Heroes through a process of refining, though. The Laguna card is just 100 right away.
My first time beating the game, I didn't do much grinding or farming. I even beat the game without Lionheart (it just took a few more Renzokukens).
Now, I do farm spells with Enc-none on the Island Closest to Hell, then grind to 100 while I wait for the draw points to recharge, but that's like an hour total, maybe a little more, of work. Once you hit 100; materials you want like Regen Rings, Marlboro Tentacles, Dragon Fangs, and other shit drop like candy, so you don't have to farm those long for Doomtrain/ultimates.

      >The big bad super secret boss is always max level anyway
I forget what the breakpoint is (I think 30), but he gets Lv. 5 Death at that point, making him substantially easier at 99 than 100 without needing 3 characters with Death on St-Def-J. Even at 100%, St-Def-J can fail as well (like ribbons in previous games).

I'm convinced that X is the best Final Fantasy game. It may not have had the best leveling and combat system, but the overall package was leaps and bounds ahead of any its predecessors and woeful successors. Ganker and the gaming community didn't understand Tidus back then because they couldn't self-insert as him.
