The Future of the Xbox brand

According to reputable sources, take this as you will:

>Microsoft is still planning to shutter or downsize or merge more studios, specially the ones with not well known IP's, Microsoft is pivoting as a big AAA third party publisher, studios with AA or less known IPs most likely will be merged or axed

>Microsoft closing Arkane, Tango etc was most likely due to Activision purchase and they really really want to cut costs and maximize profits

>Microsoft is really really going full third party, this will be heavily pushed in 2025, and they're gonna hint at this at their upcoming Xbox Games Showcase in June

>Starfield will release for PlayStation 5 in Fall/Winter of this year along with the expansion

>Contraband seems to be canceled, if they don't show it this year, it's most likely canned

>Perfect Dark is in development hell too, most likely will be canceled as Contraband.

>Microsoft is planning to revamp Gamepass, they're planning to hike the price and/or include tiers, day one games and Activision Blizzard games will be on the most expensive tier

>Microsoft is planning to announce a White Digital Xbox Series X on their upcoming June show, and most likely will hint/announce an Xbox handheld as well

>Next Xbox consoles will be Xbox branded third party machines, you will be able to buy from Steam, Epic, etc and Microsoft Store, most likely will be a niche product like Steam machines.

>Phil Spencer is planning to retire this year or early next year

Yes actually. Once they realized they needed to remove any ability for Microsoft to cause problems.

Microsoft-connected patent trolls owned patents on Xbox gamepads, but none of them owned patents on handheld PCs. So no issue if Valve made a handheld PC because patent trolls hadn't anticipated the idea of a PC handheld.
Similarly Windows OEMs have signed contracts that force them to pay Microsoft for every system sold, driving prices up, but there is no issue if Valve sells the system themselves.

Hypothetically Microsoft could go after Valve directly, but SteamOS 3 and the Deck avoid all the known remaining Microsoft patents, and attacking a Linux company would open Microsoft up to lawsuits from other Linux vendors like IBM.

No, not necessarily. What OS is it running? If it's a locked down, gimped, version of Windows how the frick do you troubleshoot? A console with Steam on it COULD be cool but it could also be an absolute nightmare.

ESRB ratings alone would kill the whole idea anyways. People want Xbox to turn into a Steam Deck so bad they're erect.

True. Not only would you get shafted with a gimped, locked down OS you'd get shafted with a gimled, locked down version of Steam itself. Can't let those kids see breasts, it might turn them straight and then how would Dr. Shekelstein sell them HRT?

A console that could play your steam library would do well.

The entire point of a console is to get you into the manufacturer's ecosystem and milk you that way. There'd be no financial incentive to sell you hardware as good as the SeX just so you can cheat on microsoft and play steam games.

And Microsoft's not gonna gain any ground in the console war without fully-assimilating with PC gaming either. It's their only remaining option that makes any since besides giving up and going third-party.

Yea, sell the console at a loss and people will buy games on steam so you gain no money, or worse, they pirate it on the Xbox because people will be able to run Windows.

        Anonymous

        >sell the console at a loss
This is essentially a myth. The 'loss' is on paper due to the cost of the R&D and production line setup being factored in, but those get paid back fairly quickly thanks to the volume being sold.

Microsoft would actually sell a lot more Xboxes if they did two things:

        1. Xboxes can be run as completely open Windows PCs.
        2. Xbox applications can be run on any PC (no reason why not, it's just a virtual machine running Xbox OS)

What is actually happening is Microsoft is going to make Windows PCs more like the Xbox, selling systems that are more locked down and with a limited hardware profile. They're going to update the OEM contracts for ARM Windows systems so they have to buy approved SOC chips from Microsoft, and of course ARM systems won't run your PC game library, not without a hardware emulator.

That's only going to serve to encourage Linux adoption among PC gamers. Proton works well-enough for playing basically any modern game that isn't F2P GaaS slop with invasive kernel-level anticheat.

The problem with this is Phil hinting they will put the AAA on game pass day 1 hurting what full price sales they could have had. The easiest thing to do is just be a third party publisher, Sea of Thieves has sold well on PS5

Playstation are following ever Xbox misstep and beginning to have serious issues because of it.
PS5 sales have already fallen behind PS4, VR has failed entirely, massively over paying for Bungie was just setting money on fire, their subscriptions are failing to increase monetisation, they’re mismanaging their studios, pushing unpopular far left politics, and going harder on PC ports, despite sales steadily falling and, as MS proved, giving potential customers reasons not to buy your hardware does not result in more profits long term, while actively damaging your overall brand.
Everything that Playstation is doing is just emulating Xbox, and that’s now unquestionably a failing strategy. Either they’ll sort their shit out and stop being dicks, or they’ll start dying off like Xbox. They don’t need to have a healthy competitor in Xbox to face consequences for their bad actions; because their customers will just not buy a Playstation if there’s not a good reason to own one.

        >going harder on PC ports
not hard enough honestly, the time between stuff they put on steam is huge and they aren't really trying to bring over stuff people have been asking for like GT7 or hell even bloodborne

Microsoft has been irrelevant to Sony outside of the Activision buyout. Microsoft hasn't been a solid check for them since the PS3 days. Seems like they stop giving shit about GP too since they're not being aggresive with their service like Microsoft. It's frustrating because Sony definitely got wienery starting with PS4 and they haven't been opposed since.
Nintendo is off in its own room playing with its own toys so the two don't even cross paths.

I believe the handheld is coming but is still a couple of years off, the popularity of devices like Steam Deck and Rog Ally took them by surprise. I recently got an email MS survey involving handheld PCs. They asked a lot of questions about streaming games which was concerning, though. My guess is it will be like a combo of the Legion Go and a Surface tablet. Probably an 8 inch screen, with removable controllers so you can also use it as a small tablet, dock accessory sold separately, with some sort of custom AMD chip like Steam Deck. It will likely have a dedicated streamlined gaming UI that you can launch into at the start screen, with regular Windows as an option for user when not gaming. Probably priced around the same as ROG Ally or Legion Go.

Xbox had a chance and fricked it up chasing trends with Kinect and then not adapting fast enough when that failed. Then they don't allow their devs to innovate and create new IPs, so the brand quickly got stale and no one cares about Xbox anymore.
