Not true anymore. A ton of essentially CIS college girls are "nonbinary" now except they express themselves the exact same way they always have and change literally nothing. They're not. It goes out of its way to include Muh Diversity. There's a scene where an African guy tells a story from the Bible and, in his version, everyone is black, and one of the kids listening to the story asks "WHY IS EVERYONE BROWN?" just so he can give a speech about multiculturalism.

He's a member of the Santo Stefano degli Abissini church in Rome (an Ethiopian church since 1479) and was invited to Tassling by the Bishop. His character is based on the real story of Micheal the Deacon, who was invited to Wittenberg (further north than Bavaria) by Martin Luther. You would know this if you read the sources in the game's bibliography.

There is evidence of a SINGLE historical instance of an Ethiopian clergyman coming to Germany. Therefore, this tiny mountain town which, as another anon pointed out, doesn't even have an inn, has an Ethiopian in it?

It's not IMPOSSIBLE. It's not like there were dinosaurs in the game or anything. But it was clearly included because you can't make a game with just white people anymore. I'm not even a /misc/tard or a white grievance guy. I still really enjoyed the game. I didn't even mind the character, really. But anyone who's honest with themselves realizes this shit is the new normal.

Except this isn't a single instance. The relationship between the Ethiopian Orthodoxy and the Catholics had been going on since the 1200s. There had been talks of a joint crusade as well but political instability in Europe put a stop to that.

There is controversy because the Portuguese stole the initiative on influencing the Ethiopian church, giving the Jesuits a lot of influence over their doctrine. There was a lot of contact between the Vatican and Ethiopia through the Coptic church of Cairo.

The patriarch had a long tradition of communication with the current leader of the Egyptian Christians.

In 1439 the King of Ethiopia sent an envoy to the Vatican because a Frenchman visiting Ethiopia was being Christian incorrectly and the King wanted to complain to the Vatican to get their flock in line.

Disclaimer: I have not played the game.
They put him in because they wanted more diversity. Not in the "actually there were tons of Ethiopians in Germany around this time" way, but in the "maybe we can do some interesting shit with an Ethiopian in a German town" way.
The game isn't meant to be an exact reflection of a shitty German town, but to make cool shit happen in a story, you need to take some liberties. Maybe Sawyer just really wanted to write about differences between German Christianity and Ethiopian Christianity?
They're obviously bringing attention to the fact that he's African too. It's not like how some games just put a bunch of brown people in places they shouldn't be in and act like it's normal. The dude's an anomaly and the game acknowledges that.
The far worse crime of the game is that it humanizes Romani gypsies, something not even I can forgvie

I think it is more to concentrate information about the reformation into a single fictional town. Same reason they had a convent/abbey combo despite them being so incredibly uncommon.

Again, fair enough. I'm not super butthurt over it. It's just funny that when you play something like this now, i.e. a story rooted in European history or legend, you can count down the minutes until the lesson on diversity and you will never have to wait long. The devs have to advertise that they are the Right Kind of People.

He's based on Michael the Deacon, who visited a town very near where the game is set. Ethiopian priests had been sent to multiple towns around Europe and was part of the courting process of the Vatican with the Ethiopian church. The protestant reformation squashed the Vatican's ambitions of integrating the church though.

                Anonymous

Again, a single dude visited a single (much more important) town. It's an extreme outlier. It doesn't make me furious or anything. I didn't throw my controller and yell about how there are goldurn Africans in muh Germany or anything like that. But I smiled a little on the inside, because *of course* they found a single instance of an African dude visiting Germany and used that as historical r"evidence" enough to include a scene about diversity. It's just funny. Again, good game. But it's so predictable at this point.

                Anonymous

But the 'single dude' narrative you're presenting isn't true. European Christians visiting Ethiopia and Ethiopian Christians visiting Europe had been occurring for centuries at this point. Read up on Ethiopian monasticism. Ethiopia had sent envoys to Europe to learn about their traditions because Ethiopia was obsessed with monks, having them be a way higher percentage of the clergy than the Catholic church.
