The original Rheinmetall Gauss rifles and pistols were classed as 'small guns' in 2. The YK42B Pulse Rifle occupied a similar niche for energy weapons but the ammo for it was more ubiquitous, and with the right perks and stats, the Vindicator made Big Guns the most broken fricking thing ever.

It actually does more unless you're using AP rounds with the AMR. Base MF cells negate 2 DT, base .50 MG negates no DT at all

Are you using overcharged MF cells? Deathclaws should get torn up by anything that uses that.

Did you use Max Charge cells?

No, but it's not like I needed to use Hand loader rounds to oneshot deathclaws with the AMR. It still nearly killed them but it didn't oneshot

Variety mixed with Sawyer getting a bad taste of gun autism. Having different calibers to differentiate progression in the game is a neat concept. Where as energy weapons in terms of the ammo is relatively consistent based primarily on the weapon used. With a perk like Vigilant Recycler you can further optimize your damage output to squeeze that extra out of a relatively low level weapon. The damage of a cowboy repeater will be hardcapped by the ammo with some ability to go above with perks and JFP rounds but it will never go toe to toe with a brush gun in terms of overall effectiveness.

                Anonymous

Is the Brush Gun based off of any real rifle? I know the Cowboy Repeater is close to a certain Winchester, and Trail Carbine is (probably) some kind of Marline but I’ve got nothing for the Brush Gun.

                Anonymous

They both appear to have some strong marlin influence. That bolt design is distinctly marlin all around and they do have offerings in 44 and 45-70. I haven't looked at cowboy guns in a bit so I don't remember their 45-70 model. Personally I think the missed opportunity is that the trail carbine doesn't follow the 1884 design to make it more visually distinct than the brush gun.

the Brush gun is not based off one specific rifle but owes inspiration to a handful of lever actions such as the Marlin M 1895, Marlin Guide Gun, and Winchester 1886
the Medicine Stick could be a reference to Roosevelt's Winchester M 1895 while not too similar in appearance the President referred to his gun as the "Big Medicine"

here is a some handy reading if you like reverse searching guns in vidya

They are meant to be based on a range of leverguns from Marlin.

I don't really understand how it works. Like ammo doesn't seem to have a separate statistical damage value from the gun itself. Which ammo type you're using looks like it just applies a multiplier to the gun's base values. If that's the case, using base rounds (each with a 1x multiplier) the YCS should outdamage the AMR

Ballistic ammo varies by either adding a 1.25x damage modifier to the base damage of the weapon itself or in the case of 38. drops it down by 0.85x. You also have to account for things like AP and HP adding and removing DT to a target upon hit. So for the AMR using standard ammo the damage output is 110. The damage is further boosted depending on the ammo used and for something like incendiary the damage is augmented with perks and the duration of the burning effect. ECPs, MFCs and energy cells work in the same way by adding or removing status effects on the target

                Here's my thought.
Let's assume you're sneaking and getting Sneak Crits on Deathclaws.
The AMR does 110 base damage + 110 critical damage for 220 total -- not factoring in the Deathclaw's DT
The YCS/186 does 140 base damage + 70 critical damage for 210 total -- not factoring in the Deathclaw's DT.

I don't know the exact damage calculation formula, but my guess would be that the 15 DT Deathclaw's have is fricking with the YCS's damage more than it is with the AMR's damage because of the difference in critical hit damage.

Nearly all guns in NV have their damage relatively standardized between calibers.
All .357 guns do more or less the same damage, as do all 5.56, for example.
There ARE definitely some examples of the weapons fudging the numbers, however. Biggest example I can think off is the fact that the strongest single-shot damage from a 5.56 weapon is That Gun despite being a pistol among rifles.
The game plays with realism a bit as well. 10mm guns are too weak for the real life cartridge. .357 is arguably too strong, 5.56 is weaker than what it is IRL, .45 ACP is definitely much stronger in NV than what it is in real life.

Basically, they couldn't get DLCs to work right with other DLCs on consoles (thanks to how shitty the engine is), so if a Perk comes from a DLC, expect it to only really work with weapons that come from the base game and the same DLC unless you have mods.

on that note, this also means some of the GRA versions of weapons don't work with Grunt even though the base game version does (please, PLEASE use mods to fix this it's bullshit)

The integration of GRA into the base game was absolutely terrible. A mod that seamlessly integrates the new weapon attachments is practically a must in my eyes.

anyone with any kind of modding experience in a Bethesda game will tell you that yes, this is very very VERY true for a wild variety of reasons.
The mods that "fix" the GRA integration issues do so by just erasing the default versions from the loot/vendor lists, replace all references to them with the GRA versions and remove the GRA tag from the name.

one compliment I can give Fallout 4 is having a dedicated pistol whip button so you could actually have the spiked knuckles on the trench knife be more than just decoration

One thing that you can't fault F4 on is giving you the ability to use a bayonet. Nothing wrong with giving them a taste of the ole cold steel tbh. They don't like it up em that's for sure.

I don't like that choosing a silencer over the bayonet is a no-brainer
I hate that most of the bayonet attachments are absolutely moronic like the bayonet clipping into the stock or there being no handle at all and the blade being attached by a flimsy shim of metal

I forget which sewer tunnel you initially enter to get to it but it's close to McCarran. When you enter you have to fight your way through rats and ghouls before you come across a little side room beneath an ascending tunnel that leads to McCarran's manhole but around there there's another room called the Sealed Sewers. You fight a bunch of Glowing Ones and Reavers in a small two room set-up and there's a duffle bag with a unique Tire Iron and a Multiplas Rifle iirc.

It's much better for sniping since it has a much higher single shot damage output counterbalanced by the cranking time. What would have made way more sense is if you could craft on an automatic crank to very rapidly charge the musket to capacity but that mod required the use of fusion cores every time you reloaded to power the crank.

I really wish it became more sophisticated looking as you upgraded it, going from some toy made in a garage to something like an actual military prototype.

I'll never forget coming across a laser pistol in early game in FO1 and FO2. There's just something so novel about it. Like, it's not really any better than a conventional gun, and much worse than weapons with burst fire like the 10mm smg that can frick up anything at point blank. But a laser pistol, it's just fancy and sounds cool and uses rare ammo (at that point in the game). I might be wrong on all this though, haven't played the games in years.

I just go straight for vegas, sprint for the airstrip, and then wait for the fiend and NCR patrols to kill eachother, the fiends carry energy weapons that you can repair and the NCR troopers have decent loot you can take guilt free. The gun runners are right up the road and as long as the NCR isn't hostile towards you they'll fight anything you kite into range. Without abusing luck at the casino you can usually get enough money to upgrade the laser rifle, then I usually work my way back to novac to unlock the housing there.

Laser Rifles aren't full auto, and of course the low base damage means you're going to replace it with something else as far as having a sniping weapon goes. It gets the job done, but even the thing it's best at, semi-auto burst damage, I think plasma defenders and recharger pistols do a better job at as far as early game weapons go

The speed of the laser guns let you stay on the farther end of medium range and the crits can make it absolutely insane. I took on quarry junction with a fully modded laser rifle and a tribeam and it worked remarkably well. No mile away sniping just staying in medium range and it took out everything before it got to me.

it fires fast enough, and with a critical build you zap everyone into ash in one or two shots. The thing being able to fire in bursts in 2 was a bug the Devs never looked into fixing but they decided to go with it for NV and instead of making it its own thing they decided to make it a unique variant of the LMG and it was ASS.
IF they wanted to keep the "burst firing" bit, they could have made it work similar to Pew Pew where you fire 3 times with every shot, make it have like 9-12 ammo per magazine and chamber it in .308

    Firearms or energy weapons?
I like big guns, but they aren't practical as the primary option.

      Anonymous

There's no guns/energy split in F4 as in past games. You instead spec into firing modes: pistol, rifle, automatic, or big guns. So pick one of the first three and then grab big guns later if you want, or don't if you think they're lame. Because of damage resistance, rifle tends to be the best damage wise, although certain pistols can be broken, like the flamer mod (which is not considered automatic for some reason) on a plasma pistol to extend the range and make it completely better than the big flamer in every way. Getting fusion cells and plasma cartridges is a real chore until super late game though, so I suggest getting the scrounger perk if you go energy weapons.

Be warned, there is apparently a bug that makes energy weapons do way less damage, although I don't know the specifics. This mod supposedly fixes it:

There's no reason to use regular energy weapons in fo4. There's also some bug with energy resistance that makes ballistic damage better. The only exception is the gatling laser which with the nuclear physicist perk gives you 1000 rounds for 4-5lbs (I forget) and is the most efficient ammo in the survival, especially since it also is fuel for power armor if you use it.

If you go heavy weapons you will eventually be using the gatling laser because the minigun is annoyingly a "low" tier weapon in the game's logic. If you play on Survival, which I recommend, ammo for explosive heavy weapons is too heavy. There is also an unique fire minigun "ashmaker" you can get very early if you do an easy quest in Goodneighbor which will carry you until gatling lasers drop.

      Anonymous

just go energy weapon unless you really like pipe guns or are able to put it out of your mind that every ballistic weapon is left handed for whatever reason (the reason is that the devs REALLY want you to see their hard work in those case ejecting and reloading animations)

in fact the only two ballistic weapons of note are the nail spike gun and gauss rifle yes the gauss rifle is classified as non-energy in 4

      >they aren't practical as the primary option
      in 4 you are right
they give you the gatling gun 20 minutes into the game and it immediately goes to sit in storage because you can't upgrade it into being viable until at least midgame

you can level multiple weapon types

      Anonymous

If you aren't a minmaxing homosexual you can usually get two weapon skills up to 100. Having them tagged at the start will help immensely.

      Anonymous

yes you can choose to dump point into both BUT you only get a limited number of perks before you hit max level so it may be wise to favor one over the other although you CAN get all the perks in both guns and energy weapons it will mean not getting perks for other aspects of gameplay

      Anonymous

In NV at least there's enough weapon perks that you should figure out which you like more
For example if you like shotguns then it's a crime to skip "And Stay Back" and "Shotgun Surgeon"

If you play vanilla in either game you'll have more than enough points to get nearly 100 across the board with how many levels you can get and how many skill points each level gives

      Anonymous

fallout 3 throws you like 20 skill points per level. getting nearly every skill up to 100 at max level is trivial.
similarly, NV's max level is 50 unless you have a mod or take the Logan's Loophole trait.

You can technically use every weapon at any skill level so it's not like you're locking yourself out of using them.

If I remember right, you lose out on damage if you don't meet the skill requirements and your accuracy is bad if you don't meet the strength requirements

you only get max (base) damage when you have 100 in a skill.
you get 100% accuracy before if you meet the skill and strength requirement.

for melee weapons, you swing slower if your skill and strength are too low.

Him teaching the White Legs enough about combat and weapon maintenance lead to them raising New Canaan and taking the fight to Zion, and him breaking the Think Tank out of Mobius' Loop is what lead to the entirety of OWB.

Ulysses made them think about Old America, and that's what started them looking for outside test subjects again (ie, setting up traps like the one at the Nipton Drive-In). Courier's brain being fricked up kick started a bunch of backup systems in the auto-doc, which triggered a bunch of other failsafes.

Well that's part of his character, he's clearly autistic and obsessed and considers these things to have a lot more weight than you
Hence why he's upset even though as a Legionnaire, what happened in the Divide was actually good for him
But yeah, I don't disagree that referring to offscreen events is moronic, but on the other hand, there's enough parallels between his story and what you're doing in the base game that I find it excusable

I just find it interesting, that Ulysses is essentially what happens when someone is as skilled/knowlable as Courier 6 can be, but just lacks that one Ace in the Hole that truly lets one take control of their destiny (which in NV, is obviously the Platinum Chip).
The end result is, despite all you can do, you still end up getting thrown to the mercy of the Wastes, which will always find you Wanting. That happening over and over and over, would easily be enough to break someone in half.

Maybe he was happy that all the political homosexuals came together out of necessity and found common ground in their struggles despite their differences. I'm not looking to pick a fight here but what do F3 or F4 threads offer in terms of discussion? I feel like I can still talk about the themes, characters, and locations of F1, F2, and NV. F3 and F4 just don't seem like they'd generate the same kind of honest discussion, however I'd like to be proven wrong.

No one talks about 3 / 4 in 3 / 4 threads for whatever reason. it's not like anyone is stopping people from talking about it, it's just that no one has anything to say.

as soon as I walked out of Pearl's building all the kids were in a single group right in front of me
like 7 skill checks later I pretty much had all the rep I needed then I went to the museum because I wanted the snow globe anyway and did that and passed all the skill checks there I'm pretty sure that was all of the rep that is needed
maybe I got lucky but I do recall the kids grouping up together during certain times of the day

You probably can do it nonetheless, but by the time you get there you should have a SMMG, the Red Glare and a sniper rifle anyway, which should be enough to take them on.

Boone's companion quest is pretty fricking annoying because realistically, you have to do it like 5 minutes after recruiting him, which also means you are gonna piss off the Legion enough to get hit squads on your ass at like level 7.

What made you come to that conclusion? His quest is pretty easy to stumble through even on your first run as long as it doesn't bug out. Even if you wipe out every legion encampment before recruiting him I'm pretty sure you can still do his quest.

No, you literally can't, that's the problem. If you decide to wipe out Nelson, or save the Powder Gangers from getting enslaved, or wipe out Cotton Wood without Boone in your party you don't get to progress his quest. It's very possible to lock yourself out of it forever.

The point is Boone is the only one that's extremely easy to lock yourself out of without the character refusing to join you entirely. You don't need a bunch of quest related stuff for the others and there's literally no reason to ever kill the Remnants. You probably won't even know where 4/5 of them are without Arcade's quest
