      >I've heard that israelites merged every non right party there and won the recent elections
Anon...do you not understand how parliamentary systems work? That's called a coalition government, you do that when your party isn't big enough to form a majority government. That isn't even remotely unusual in countries with parliaments, the only unusual thing is they stopped infighting long enough to merge, which means they're probably making constant concessions behind the scenes to keep the other factions in the coalition happy and not leaving.

This guy could raise a gorillion dollars but no court in the world is going to rule that a company must keep their games' servers up until the end of time.

Exactly, that's why they should be forced to disclose how long they plan to support the game. Or release hosting software, that too. Or, you know, not blocking games from working just because they happen to have leader boards.

Can someone tell me what this is actually about instead of spreading shitposting

Basically, he wants to stop game companies from just shutting down your ability to access a game when they want to stop supporting it. No, he isn't asking for companies to support it forever, he's saying they need to either give us the ability to play it offline when service has ended, or release the tools that allow us to make fan servers.
And before you say "well that's asking too much of them", he points out that Microsoft said the same shit with Internet Explorer in the 90s. They did it later anyway, so apparently it was too much work until it wasn't.

I know this is gonna sound rough for some but videogames are that, games that are supposed to be played and discarded for the next new slop. The common man is not interested in them, as they have no artistic merit unlike movies or books.
The type of people who are interested in "game preservation" are the autistic kind of manchildren incapable of move on his favorite childhood game, in that they are not different from a troony or a redditor watching for the 900th time breaking bad or some moe slop because is their "safe-space"

That doesn't mean you should destroy the ability for anyone to enjoy it, or discover it themselves later and enjoy, for the rest of time. There are games from the 70s that still work 100% fine now, permenantly killing a game only really started being a thing in the late 2000s.

Given the limitations of traditional tools, more out-of-the-box tactics should be considered. One such tactic would aim at gradually making these boards less interesting for their users.

One way to achieve this would be to regularly post content that looks genuine (using the right language, imagery, etc.) yet is meaningless – this would dilute the message of these boards and make their threads uninteresting, thereby reducing their attractiveness and sense of community.

I hope Ross wins, but he has an uphill battle that's probably even worse than he's anticipating. Most people who would be willing to buy The Crew in the first place are likely the type to not care about this issue at all. Meanwhile the people most passionate about the issue would have avoided the game like the plague. 12 millions sounds like a lot but the number of people even in a position to act is going to be much much lower, within that sphere even less people will actually see anything wrong, and within that small pool even less people will be willing to do a bunch of paperwork no matter how much you hand hold them.

He's not going to win because he doesn't want a compromise and can't read between the lines of lawyers he's talked to. At best, the absolutely fairy tale star wars win he could get is a precedent to have offline functionality in games from this point on. He will never be able to make corporations open new projects to patch their library of games, mostly on consoles, to work offline or to keep the servers up forever. Older a game gets the more likely it's sourcecode and it's product catalogue from its development will be loss.

You cannot write whatever you want on the TOS, the only reason they've gotten away with it for so long it's because gamers are THAT lazy and apathetic.
According to Ross, Germany has no legal precedent for this kind of situation, this is why France/Germany will be the focal points of the campaign since the US doesn't believe in user rights.

In the US you basically own no software so it has no chance, but in first world countries you can't blatantly violate consumer rights and claim the TOS protects you.

If a game relies on a centralized server, it's impossible to play the game after the publisher stops supporting it. This has resulted in many games, both singleplayer and multiplayer, getting completely destroyed and rendered unplayable a few years after they're released. This is easily avoidable by simply letting people host their own servers. Due to the fact that corporations are doing this, the products that people purchased are getting destroyed, and many games are becoming lost forever to time. This is legal in the US because of some court ruling in the 90s that said people don't have any ownership rights at all to software, but many european countries have more sane laws about property ownership and this practice would be considered illegal, but no one has gone through the trouble to actually try challenging it legally yet. This guy is trying to do that, using the singleplayer videogame The Crew which relies on a centralized server that's getting shut down soon.

Surprisingly based. I hope next he targets the false marketing of ownership. Saying "Buy [name of game]" on Steam/PSN/Xbox and having an "Add to Cart" button underneath is blatant bullshit. You're not buying the game, you're buying a fricking license and have no ownership. Legally they shouldn't be allowed to sell it to you in such a way that creates the illusion of ownership, including having a "library" section on your account. It should instead say "license library" and "add license to cart". All this consumerist garbo brainwashing needs to end. Either sell the game or sell a license, don't sell a license pretending to sell the game.

      Anonymous

i think the whole 'license' thing gets a bit muddy from what i've seen, people can get confused as what a license actually entails, at least a perpetual one like most digital goods like video games

AFAIK, buying a game digitally (no subscription, just a single upfront purchase) means you pay for a perpetual license, which means you (should) have full ownership rights over your copy of the game. It's basically the digital equivalent of you owning your physical copy of Unreal Tournament or something. The publisher is transferring their ownership rights over to you in return for money. What they can't do is go ahead and destroy the product you paid for after the fact, cause that could be grounds for fraud

That's at least my understanding of it. It gets conflated these days cause of this exact shit that companies are pulling, and US consumer law tends to throw the implications of owning a perpetual license into the rubbish

        Anonymous

Except in the US. Ross got in contact with a lawyer who spent like 2 weeks researching this shit for free, only to learn that there was a court precedent that says you don't own ANY of your games, even the physical ones. That everything is just a license you're paying for and legally they could yank it away if they wanted. And this basically isn't going to change without congress passing legislation making it change, which isn't impossible but getting congress to agree on such a thing in its current state is almost impossible. I say almost but the Apple case gives me a glimmer of hope.

Realistically speaking the only thing anyone can do is stop buying these kind of games that can get stolen any time. Even if the laws change developers just circumvent them by making the games more mmo subscription like.

Here's our country's most successful petition ever. It got 100k more signatures than #2, and over twice as many as #3.
It's asking for parliament to go through the process, to call an election.
The official response is right below the petition details. Labelled "Government response tabled".
A shit ton of words to say "lolololol, we're going to ignore the request, and keep doing what we've already been doing".

Don't hold your fricking breathe for Canada to do anything, our Liberal government is currently trying to create a law for online censorship, where they can put us in jail for life, for online hate. There's no fricking way that the Liberals give one frick about video game preservation. When the "gamers" are the group that can be targeted by the online hate law.

Anon, I had Overwatch 1 ripped from my hands and forced to use Overwatch 2, needing to pay for "future heroes" despite the fact I didn't want to play Overwatch 2.

I, regretfully, paid for Overwatch 1 but still wanted to play it in the future but now I can't. They took away my cash I paid for it and told me to "suck it up, download our new game and get stuck with the new shit balancing"

This matters, lots of games are being shut down to make room for the next game with no option for people to play the older title due to the reliance on servers. There's nothing political about this.

I still can't believe Blizzard got away with that. They literally stole a paid product, and switched it with the EXACT SAME PRODUCT except with more aggressive monetisation schemes

I'll tell you why they did it, they made promises from Day 1, Jeff listed a bunch of stuff that Blizzard said they'd never ever do (paid heroes, unnecessary microtransactions, battlepasses, free updates, no pay to win stuff).

However with the release of Overwatch 2, they never promised any of that. The fact that the PvE stuff they promised and sold Overwatch 2 with will NEVER see the light of day is the nails on the coffin for me.

            I can't even play Overwatch 1, it's gone.

He said developers should provide server tools once they stop supporting the game, but what about games that are constantly changing and often add or remove content? I blame the reporting on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebeck_v._McDonald%27s_Restaurants successfully gaslighting americans into thinking suing companies for genuine negligence is lame because "haha women sue because coffee is hot hehe", so everyone just bends over and lets themselves get fricked in the ass.

I'm not implying that EULA's aren't made to frick you over in the long run, but it's literally called a License Agreement and the fact you think nothing of agreeing to one of these every time you launch a game means these companies have already won.
If you don't think EULA's are airtight written by lawyers and completely backed by current laws you're living with kirby in dreamland. There's a reason you can't even play one of these games or get past the title screen without agreeing to the EULA, because the law already said "sure you can frick them over as long as they agree to it".

Murder is illegal. There is nothing illegal in an EULA. Quit being fricking moronic.

          Anonymous

There's nothing illegal because of the legal gray-zone this issue specifically is in most countries, the point of this is to make it illegal. But you'd know that if you were arguing in good faith and not just a paid shill.

There is no legal "grey-zone". What they do is legal, you agree to it, and you get complain when they hold up their end of the deal but you decide suddenly you don't want to.

In America, unironically yes. Luckily Ubisoft releases games internationally so other countries can step up where the US has failed.

That doesn't mean there is nothing you can contribute if you are in the US. See what you can do at:

Did you think this was some sort of gotcha comment that Ross somehow overlooked even though he has been refining his argument for years? Outside of the US, EULAs mean nothing. France and Australia have strong consumer protection laws. Anyone outside of France who owns The Crew can contribute to the main French attack.

Go on the website to find out how you can specifically help. There is also a FAQ that will probably answer any other points you care to bring up:

None of you won't do shit about it either, just b***h and gripe.

in skyrim's case the line is blurry between DLC and a microtransaction, so i dont think this point stands -- its still paid content. if this initiative succeeds, the "keep the game playable" stipulation also applies to any kind of microtransactions, like those in free to play games, mmos, etc. as a consumer you only stand to gain value no matter what
if you cant see yourself being in the position where a video game (or content within) you paid for cannot be played because of some corpo arbitrarily deciding so, then youre either moronic or are on the payroll of said corpos
