The only thing of value in the Nvidia launch.

Portal RTX mod.
It's the only thing of value other than a $1600+ shit GPU.

my question is how it's supported. is this a build of source 2 that has RTX and portal 1 was ported to it? if so then I'm really looking forward to what the engine can do in the future

        >Soon, players will be able to get their hands on Portal with RTX, enhancing one of the top-rated games of all time, and they can customize their experience with the RTX Remix Runtime as they play.

Sounds like you'll really be able to play around with this thing.

how is source handling raytracing like that

      Anonymous

It's a wrapper that applies to any old games running old DirectX, engine doesn't need to be updated at all
the only per-game stuff would be adding in updated models/textures

        Anonymous

wouldn't this fuck with all the collision detection though?

          Anonymous

Nope, collision data lives in a separate world from render data
It's just a really, really fancy reshade

            Anonymous

            >collision data lives in a separate world from render data
thats exactly what i mean. since collision all has to run off the CPU, then you can't drastically change assets or you will end up with the player clipping through objects or getting stuck on invisible walls

        >it uses DXVK
Interesting. I wonder if Portal RTX will run in Proton.

        Anonymous

        Would this work with emulators?

          Anonymous

Theoretically yeah, assuming the diagram is accurate, anything that works under DXVK can take advantage of it, as all the scene data is reconstructed from what's output from DXVK
It's up to garden gnomevidia not being garden gnomes and letting this work as a wrapper you can tune

But how exactly is RTX going to work with prebaked lighting?

Probably some per-application tuning (or heuristic guesswork) on which vertex attributes / textures are related to prebaked lightmaps, and adjusting how much it influences the reconstructed scene

But how exactly is RTX going to work with prebaked lighting?

          Anonymous

It'd probably be just disabled, you don't need the majority of the baked lighting if you're ray tracing GI.

Well did you see any prebaked lighting in the video? I sure didn't, so they clearly disabled it somehow.

They did not make a mod suite, or a mod.
    They made a universe simulator
They made an ai that effectively generates the world based off of literally almost nothing for input.
IS everyone insane? how do they not realize this changes EVERYTHING.

Why did it get rid of all the lights? This is a terrible idea

      Anonymous

The lights are still there, just a bit hard to see unless you look closely. The original game was not exactly stunning lighting wise nor did it have HDR so it did not have as much dynamic range to express complex lighting like this in compared to a more modern rendering system.

  25. 2 weeks ago

this is the worst "rtx: ON!" comparison i have ever seen in my entire life.
they fucking changed all the textures, what's the point

      Anonymous

I mean it depends what you're expecting. The light transport with ray tracing is obviously significantly improved with "RTX on", but without proper PBR material information it would not be able to be shown off nearly as well (Portal originally had no normal maps, hardly any complex material information, etc).

        Anonymous

bla bla the whole point of a COMPARISON to show off how good rtx is is by showing it on and off by using the SAME FUCKING TEXTURES. if you change the whole thing might as well compare daggerfall to cyberpunk, it's fucking meaningless

          Anonymous

Well you'll be able to do that when it comes out if you're so concerned about that, but a 15 year old game designed around rasterization is not going to look good when you suddenly add cutting edge lighting and material expectations to it. It needs some reauthoring of the data to make it actually work with the new way it's being rendered as these are completely incompatible ways of doing graphics (the material model alone is completely different for instance between this and an old game).

      >And add lights to the cube?
Because they move around a lot. This way, they can help show off the dynamic lighting.
