They already tried to market to normies with Absolution and failed, it was their last shot and they didn't want Hitman to die, the fire under their asses is why they didn't fail again.

            Piss off.

Never played it, what's wrong with it?

It isn’t an open hitman game. It’s almost entirely linear with very few open levels.

They also added the worst mechanic in all of hitman games in that people whose uniforms you disguise as will recognize you unless you press the “blend in” button which for some reason uses a resource meter and it just doesn’t make sense because all he does is like tip his hat or something to “blend in”.

If you can get past the linear levels (which honestly isn’t that bad, just bad for being hit man) and get past the blend in mechanic, it truly is the best hitman plot and character-wise. Plus there’s an awesome mechanic that lets you do RDR/RDR2 bullet tag + shoot that is really satisfying.

Tbh I’m probably gonna go replay it now. It’s a solid game just not a good hit man game.

Absolution had a couple of good ideas like blending, disguises not being god-mode, npcs having tons of situational dialogue, and also user created contracts, so it was nice they didn’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Kind of wish they kept togglable silencers and mark and execute though.

        >No remakes of classic maps in the Nu engine

        What went wrong?

Impossible for some maps because Glacier 2 doesn’t do elevators (notice how all elevators in nu-man are either out of order, or just empty elevator shafts). IO also said they would have done a proper prison level by now if it weren’t for engine limitations.

I was in the focus group feedback thing back in 2016. I have ALWAYS suggested timed events, or at least not making them tied to proximity.
I suggested a map with a timed map change event, like an airport where you have to get the target before they board or a train that arrives and if you're too slow it continues in a full train station or something like that.
I also liked having separated camera circuits, but all the casuals b***hed and moaned and they nerfed it.
I also concluded all my feeback sessions with telling them how much I hated the always online bullshit, but at that time I still thought it was Squeenix' idea.

There are some timed events, but I think the logic for proximity based events is because of how frick huge most of the maps are. The things that bother me most are instances like the Isle of Sgail where you need to disguise yourself as the DJ to start the burning effigy ceremony. There should be a way to make that happen on its own. The best designed maps in the trilogy are also the most Suit Only friendly ones IMO.

I liked separate camera circuits too. Although I think IO deserve massive credit for making it so that a target is allowed to spot you without a penalty as long as you kill them before they can tell anyone else.

Yeah I hated that too. Like you couldn't manipulate the pyrotechnics from afar.
Same with the secret vote or what it was, where you HAD to impersonate that one dude to be able to kill the chick or forward the necessary events. Can't remember what exactly it was because Sgail was by far my least favorite level of 2.

          >it just doesn’t make sense because all he does is like tip his hat or something to “blend in”.
It's hilarious when you have an outfit with no hat and he just covers his face with his hand like an autist

The best thing about this was the level where you had to evade a SWAT team or something and at one point could take the clothes of a fully covered swat dude. Which means that as long as they wouldn't talk to you or something nobody, especially not the regular non-swat cops, should be able to know that it's not one of them.

Reminds me of the """enforcers""" you get in some of the WoA levels. Like in fricking Paris with regular security guard who will suspect you even though by default you walk in with a presumably legit invite and none of the IAGO guards will bat an eye at you if you steal an IAGO invite. We simply can't comprehend these omniscient guards, they're not on our level.

I understand why they put the suit enforcer in the Paris Bar from a gameplay perspective though. Without that one enforcer, the bar is objectively the best route to Dalia from the main entrance.

yeah, shit like this is a sort of necessary evil, same with the crows in mumbai (though they spammed them a bit too hard). i guess the in-universe explanation would be that a few people are just gonna sense that 47's vibe is off

                Anonymous

In universe, Suit enforcers are usually given an explanation:

                >The Maelstrom knows an assassin is after him, so his gang is extra suspicious
                >ICA agents in Berlin know who 47 is.
                >Pritchard in Chongqing knows who 47 is since he’s one of the ICA Board Directors

The Paris one is the only one that isn’t explained, though an interesting headcanon is that he may have seen 47 on a previous job before.

              Anonymous

I think enforcers are a good addition. In my headcanon, they have some kind of meta-knowledge, in that a weird bald dude with a huge barcode on the back of his head might not belong anywhere here. From a gameplay perspective they're necessary lest we get a Blood Money tier "literally invisible" kind of thing going.
And it's still a way better mechanic than the bullshit they had in Absolution was.

it was even more open than the old games and had campy and funny dialogue. They listened to the fans with things like bringing back the briefcase in the second one, they genuinely love the original games too.
They messed up the third game a little bit probably because a lot of the talent got laid off after splitting off from square enix.

But they split off from Squeenix after the first game not the second. I know they picked up Warner Bros funding for the second and then they lost that too before starting on 3.

Perhaps people left because they kept zigzagging all over the place like that.

Most stealth games feature this. They just don't have the social stealth side of things and instead rely on hiding in shadows.

it's not the same, hitman focuses on real life locations which have a lot of people roaming about
compare this to e.g. chaos theory, where the stages are linear, don't have as many events that have to occur, don't have as many NPCs etc.
"dora" from death to spies 2 is an excellent example, just compare this to your average stage in any other stealth game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI2rYF5wxWs

It is absolutely the same. Just because Hitman levels are a a bit wider doesn't mean it's entirely different. And frankly, the NPCs (if you mean the ones you can't get a disguise from) are mechanically not much more than padding. Remove them and you won't have any more going on than in Chaos Theory.

                >Remove the main character of social stealth, the disguise system, and you won't have any more going on than in Chaos Theory

even the older hitman games like silent assassin have mechanically more complex stages than the entirety of chaos theory

                Anonymous

Listen here you little shit: As long as you don't have a gun out, it doesn't matter, at all, what kind of disguise you are wearing, to the bystander NPCs.
In Blood Money, if you take e.g. the Mardi Gras level, the masses of people are simple carboard cutouts. I am not even sure anymore if they have an actual AI beyond "duck when loud", and iirc they don't even count towards kill count.
It's cleverly made, sure, and looks rather impressive, but mechanically it's not different.
In Splinter Cell you hide in the shadows, in Hitman you hide in clothes.

But go ahead and give some examples of those mechanically complex levels.

                >but mechanically it's not different.
yes, it's totally the same bro, except shadows are clothes and they move in a determined route and work in specific places while not working in others, and they're all set in bigger, sandbox-like stages
                but it's totally the same!
                dumb homosexual

Thief and Dishonoured both do "Open Level" design. The big crowds are actually a bit of an illusion because most are dumby AIs until the player does something. I understand its difficult, but it doesn't seem that much of a leap in complexity compared to other games.

it's quite possible to do today but it's not a recipe for success since social stealth isn't a normie ge

I feel the opposite actually. Hitman is actually much more accessible to normies because punishments for individual detections are more lenient due to the fact the AI has more stages than just “undetected”, “searching” and “combat”.

Also, going guns blazing is viable in Hitman. In fact, if you watch normies play Hitman, every mission turns into a bloodbath at some point because normies can’t into sneaking for long periods of time. Plus, normies don’t see the point in doing Silent Assassin runs.

                Anonymous

Most players will resort to the blunt, brute force method because it’s fastest and requires the least brainpower (in theory, since a guns blazing run of Hitman still requires good routing to make sure you don’t get flanked and slaughtered).

Normies don’t want to do self-imposed challenges. They want to succeed with the least amount of effort. I’m 90% certain that these kind of players are why Opportunities/Mission Stories became a thing, since IO probably knew that most casual players wouldn’t bother to look for more depth or replay the levels unless they explicitly gave them an incentive to. Doesn’t stop some people complaining that the games are “too short” or “not interesting” though.

I don't like it. The plot is fricking moronic. I don't expect something incredible...but holy shit is the entire overblown mission impossible bullshit completely absurd. Why can't you just be a guy that gets paid to kill people. Why do you need to #savetheworld #wearthemask #respectessentialworkers? It's cringeworthy.

You are paid to kill people, they just make the targets bad people so you don’t feel sorry for them when you repeatedly kill them in a variety of gruesome ways.

My only real complaint about the story is that some of the more story driven targets really stretch plausibility as far as the reasons you’re given for killing them those (Sgail for example literally admits that the Washington Twins are basically collateral and nothing more).

Depends on which part of the veterans you are talking about. For a lot of them the new trilogy is fine, it is quite excellent in the gameplay department.
But for us loregays the new games are an abomination.
They retconned a lot of shit about the classic games in ways we did not like. For example that whole plotline with Diana's parents, or changing 47's entire personality and backstory, or reducing Dr. Ort-Meyer to a mere lackey of the generic illuminati when in the old games he was 47's true father. Did you read the tie-in comic they released in 2017? I did and it was awful, and they based the whole plot of H2 and H3 on that shitty comic, unfortunately.
Lots of shit like that ruin the new trilogy for the autistic veteran fans like me.

Story is only a detriment if it gets in the way of the gameplay. In this case its the whole whistleblowing the ICA and being forced into a splinter cell tier escape segment with only one real stealth route out of it. He's simply genetically engineered to be on the top of his game which makes him healthier despite his age, the nutrilogy has lots of references about his age which in my mind is a way to foreshadow his retirement in a future installment but I can't imagine them designing a new assassin as iconic as him.

Na, if you played codename 47 (or read the comic, or the novel) he's a series IV clone:47th.
He was Ortmyers 'best' clone until 48, then 48 was cloned into his own series.

            Piss off.

I cannot imagine caring about the lore of a series that ends the first game with a clone factory minigun showdown.

Contracts has the best story exactly because it's so visceral and self-contained instead of the political illuminati shit they keep trying to pull.
      >47 gets shot and hides in some dingy apartment
      >every mission is a fever dream/memory of a previous mission
      >it's raining in every one of them because it's raining in real life too, adding to the fever dream concept that things aren't quite real
      >last mission is the only real one as 47 wakes up and has to finish the job as he's chased down by the entire city's police force
They really need to scale things back down and make it feel more personal, I simply did not give a single shit about any of the secret society drama.

Based, I hate this giant Illuminati CIA shit with bunch of morons in suit talking all the time, these games need more aesthetic and less bullshit.

In general that's my biggest issue with the Nu Trilogy, the levels are too goofy, sometimes you are literally killing weird depressive incels or random women that didn't really commit anything especific. Meanwhile in the other games you were killing people directly linked to drug cartels, human traffickers, cannibals and rapists.

I think it's the problem of making Hitman too 'marvel-esque' everything has to bee too light hearted, funny and marketable to streamers to make funny moments.

While I love Contracts, Blood Money would be a better example of what the franchise should be, has the perfect balance of perversion, aesthetic and goofy stuff but still keeping a minimalist story.

          Anonymous

Apparently, the lighter tone come from them wanting to keep the tones of all the games different. So they went for a more goofy spy thriller approach instead.

I do like some of the songs in the nu trilogy. I really like the exit music and the stingers that play when you do something extreme like kill/attacking someone in the open. But besides from some ambience from Paris and Mumbai, none of it is really memorable.

Honestly, I don’t think the tone is that much goofier than the older games. Hitman always had its share of campiness since day one. I think the difference is that only a handful of missions are set in grungy, low tech areas, so everything feels “cleaner”.

I just wished it had more timed events. The world feels too static in the new games. Also elevators

      Anonymous

I actually enjoy that. I hate being timed, especially with something that encourages a tactical approach like Hitman. But I do agree, it can be a nice challenge. The Sheikh in Paris and the grieving coworker lady in Sapienza are pretty good examples; not necessary but a great reward if you make it to them in time

      Anonymous

I was in the focus group feedback thing back in 2016. I have ALWAYS suggested timed events, or at least not making them tied to proximity.
I suggested a map with a timed map change event, like an airport where you have to get the target before they board or a train that arrives and if you're too slow it continues in a full train station or something like that.
I also liked having separated camera circuits, but all the casuals b***hed and moaned and they nerfed it.
I also concluded all my feeback sessions with telling them how much I hated the always online bullshit, but at that time I still thought it was Squeenix' idea.

Everyone who worked on Contracts and Blood Money left the company. moron producer wanted to make snoystyle TPS games. Kane and Lynch sucked. Absolution sucked. Director gets fired, producer can't be fired because he's a co-founder so he gets moved out of the producer role in hopes of stopping the bleeding. Square-Enix buys them out and says "Just make Blood Money you fricking morons make us money now now now." moron Absolution producer has a vision of Hitman-As-A-Service, live games, episodic releases, leaderboards, etc. nuHitman 2016 ends up being a good game despite all the bullshit.

I only played the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of the Classic games, I believe Contracts did the disguise/suspicion system the best. In 2:SA it can lead to tedious bullshit while in BM they made it pathetically easy, Contracts had the right balance. How is the system in the newer games, more like Contracts?

      Anonymous

I think the newer games have a good balance, you do have immunity against plebs but you have to watch out for enforcers that get suspicious unlike BM where disguises are essentially godmode and the only way to get caught is to intentionally go out of your way.

shame about the music though, as excellent as nuHitman is to play, the experience can never quite match playing a mission start to finish in Hitman 2:SA or Blood Money with the orchestra that kicks in every time your suspicion meter increases.

In my opinion, 2:SA or Blood Money are the best, followed by Contracts then Codename 47 in last place

    Huh. Not really.

The original was way more handcrafted, nu-Hitman pretty much suffers from the same issues open world games do: everything is standardized to the point everything plays the same. I had a blast on Showstopper, then everything else got boring real fast.

It also stopped evolving. The AI is still pretty bad, reactions are random at best, moronic most of the time, which completely breaks gameplay seeing how it's just about gaming a broken AI. It also suffers from lingering moronic issues, like the inability to perform a silent takedown on stairs or uneven terrain.

I don't even care about the plot, to me it was always nothing more of a backdrop for some nice stealth/infiltration mechanics, but those mechanics are old and fail to improve.

A weird thing about the fiber wire is that you can’t use it on people who are sitting down, but you can still subdue/choke people out bare handed when they’re sitting down. I have no idea why they have one, but not the other. The Fiber Wire was nerfed pretty heavily in general. The only useful thing about it is that it’s the quietest melee weapon and allows you to instantly transition between strangling and body dragging animations.

I actually think Instinct is one of the best implementations of it in vidya.

It’s not overpowered and it’s basically just a real-time map. The challenge in Hitman isn’t figuring out where the guards are, but instead figuring out how to get around them. Also, being able to track your targets real-time is a god send for strats that require precise timing.

What’s the point of getting an accident kill if you left behind casings on the scene that can prove it was a murder? The only time I actually leave behind the casings and clips is if I want to make it perfectly clear that it was a hit. In other words, my accidents only runs are also no gunshot runs.

Reminder that Blood Money invented all the opportunities and accidents shit except that it had much less different unique ways to kill your targets compared to WoA. BMdrones need to realize that the levels they like to praise so much like Curtains Down, are just inferior versions of nu-man levels.
