He’s right
cope boomer
>the ps2 isn't retro despite being over 20 years old because... it just isn't okay! I'm not old! I'm not old! I'm not old!
shut up generationtard.
I'd actually put the permanent dividing line at PS2. "Content updates" and online and shit ruined the chance of 7th gen and up being preserved at all.
I feel the same way.
PS2 was discontinued literally 10 years ago.
How do you define retro?
Time to admit you are growing old!
Wrong board
is the Dreamcast retro?
When the PS2 came out, the NES wasn't even 20 years old. the PS2 is now 22 years old anon.
I don't mind that PS2 is considered retro. It's clearly from a different time when Games could still be inventive. However over half of the 360 and PS3 library should never be considered retro.
Please fucking die.
PS2 is 23 years old. In 2000 23 years earlier the Atari 2600 was released. When you played PS2 as a kid did your parents walk into the room and say "Atari ain't retro, I played it as a kid *sips* yup Pitfall was a good game."
Back in the 90's I went to a Flee Market with my parents and there was someone there selling a huge fucking box of Atari 2600 games and a system. I asked if I could buy it since we drove there in a car and I couldn't just demand that so much space be taken up by my purchase. And my parents told me no, becuase it was too old and shitty compared to the video games I was used to. In a way they were right, but I do wonder what games were in that box.
I had one of those Atari Anthology collection games on PS2 and yes most of the games were really shitty, boring, and simple.
Oh I have several Atari 2600's now. And more games than any one should. I know Mike Matai has more Atari games than me, but not many can say that. However, I know there are extremely rare Atari games out there. I don't have that many of the "rare" ones, that's why I still wonder what was in that box.
maaaaybe some of them could been interesting from a purely collecting perspective (EXTREMELY UNLIKELY), but playing them? total garbage. even the very best atari games like pitfall pale in comparison to any average early famicom game.
it's not a matter of being old, the technology just wasn't there yet
Frogs and Flies is pretty cool. Yars Revenge is pretty cool. Millipede is pretty cool. There are many many Activision Games that are worth sinking a little time into.
Yes the overwhelming majority of them are not good to be polite. However not all Atari Games are created Equal.
They were right and probably remember the video game crash.
Games before the crash were objectively unplayable. The ones you got which were worth anything were one in maybe ten, and the ones worth anything were usually not long enough to sustain anyone's attention for too long. The best stuff went to arcades.
SOME of it was REALLY good, like Flak Attak. The chances of something like that being sold in a big box of games is rare.
Oh I know, but the box was about half the size of a box that a DishWasher would come in. Back in the days when nobody gave a shit about retro video games having any value. I just want to know what was in there and the memory haunts me.
Imagine being 20+ and still playing with your video toys
Retro hardware is anything no longer in official production, not some arbitrary line based off your personal age and feelings of when you played things as a child, which obviously varies wildly from person to person. Yes, this includes the 360, PS3, and Wii you dumb fuck; They are all rapidly approaching 20 years old and have been discontinued for years already. Deal with it like an adult.
Are they really retro when they still receive tech support and updates though? PS3 just got an update a few weeks ago.
Yea... don't get Sony's "update" if you want to keep your PS3 from destroying it self.
So are you going to elaborate or what?
Sony putting out killer updates isn't anything new. They were killing Phat PS3's before the Super Slims were a thing with their "updates".
It is a fat, and it still works.
Well that's lucky. There aren't very many fats that still work. I have an OG 60GB that still works good. It didn't see much use. I plan on only using it for PS2 games.
My fat PS3 was a 40GB and an update killed it during Deus Ex Human Revolution. It had plenty of space around it. I kept the dust out of it regularly with an Air Compressor not some canned BS. It also didn't travel.
>PS3 just got an update
That's bizarre, but at least you raise a valid objection that can be discussed or looked into, unlike
>I don't think so
I don't give a fuck what your retarded ass feels. You didn't think to begin with, you felt. Don't confuse the two.
That's still an arbitrary line, retard. Oh, sorry, [yesterday] it was fine but [today] it's retro now despite nothing changing or happening other than an arbitrary date being reached! Shut the fuck up.
yes, it's kinda like how antiques are 100 years old.
Antique value isn't a thing until something reaches 20 to 25 years of age. 100 is actually way too conservative for the subject.
Well I don't give a fuck what your retard ass "thinks". You're not an authority on the subject anymore than I am. So fuck your feelings.
I have an objective measure, you have your personal feelings. One of us is absolutely a higher authority here. Get fucked, gay.
Your objective measure is nothing more than a manifestation of your personal feelings.
>Retrogaming, also known as classic gaming and old school gaming, is the playing and collection of obsolete personal computers, consoles, and video games. Usually, retrogaming is based upon systems that are outmoded or discontinued, although ported retrogaming allows games to be played on modern hardware via ports or compilations.
>retrogaming is based upon systems that are outmoded or discontinued
>manifestation of your personal feelings
Are you fucking sorry? Are you gonna cry?
My definition has a basis entirely separate from what I personally feel. Your definition is based on what your stupid ass feels based on what you played as a kid. My definition has company statements attached to discontinuation dates. Your definition has ??? oh shit nothing.
Yeah though, it's about my feelings and not yours, right?
Sounds like a lot of pent of feelings. Do you need to see someone about it or are you going to write me another essay?
>Three lines is an essay
Yeah I shouldn't expect you to be capable of reading, short bus. Go back to huffing paint in blissful ignorance.
>What's a PS4?
Bad faith dipshits all around.
So the 3DS is retro? No, I don't think so. Try again.
Retro is considered 15 years old.
Mario Kart DS is retro.
Persona 3 FES is retro.
MGS4 is retro.
Halo 3 it goes on.
>Retro hardware is anything no longer in official production
>Original non-slim PS4 and PS4 Pro are now retro
lmao
>Memory Cards
>Wired controllers by default
>CRT inputs by default
>DVD Player (We've had blu rays in consoles for 17 years now)
>Hits of the console have turned and are going to turn 20. The oldest being 23.
>One of the latest note worthy, non sports related games released was Persona 4. 15 years ago.
>If the PS2 was a person, it would be old enough to be an adult with a kid in elementary school
> In 2 years, it will be a quarter of a century
What argument do you have for it not being retro? The PS2 is only 4 years older than the N64.
Why would something not be considered retro just because tech got different?
DVDs are retro. Minidiscs are retro.
One day all the current consoles will be considered retro.
'Retro' generally refers to tech that isn't in use anymore.
Minidiscs are retro, DVDs are absolutely not Retro and are in fact still a primary method of optical storage for some mediums.
Same with CDs
Funny enough, some tech is retro but still in use because of its icon as a retro status, like Cassette tapes and records.
I mean yeah, he's right.
Which means Retro games are now better than they've ever been.
Don't they still make PS2 games because South America has so many of them? I could have sworn that some of those lame football games get PS2 and PS3 releases.
That was 10 years ago, the last PS2 game to be released was FIFA 14 Legacy Edition
Retro is a compliment. New is getting progressively worse for gaming, both for console and PC.
Anything older than 15 years is retro. You can call 25 years old games vintage if you'd like.
If PS2 doesn't count as retro, then Dreamcast does not count as retro either.
Likewise, insisting that Dreamcast is retro means you have to accept the PS2 as retro.
Only the most contrarian of contrarians will argue otherwise.
PS2 barely qualifies as retro
PS3 will NEVER EVER be retro
Literally just create a new term if you want to call the PS3 retro because the world has lost all its meaning
>PS3 will NEVER EVER be retro
why?
people will someday be nostalgic for the PS3.
I'm already nostalgic for Killzone and wish we could get to the timeline where Killzone took off instead of Halo
I too feel nostalgia for PS3 games such as GTA 5
8-bit, 16-bit, and early 3D are definitely the limits of retro aesthetics but retro is going beyond that now because time is still moving sadly
Why gamers even care about this?
You don't hear people caring about so much about when a movie was released, or an album, or a book, etc.
>You don't hear people caring about so much about when a movie was released
You don't know shit about movies and their audiences, then.
>PS2 IS them nostalgic peaceful vibe days fr fr feels man
somebody wrote an article about why the term retro was incredibly dumb about a decade ago and i cant find it anymore. but essentially, there's no defining point in what is retro or not - the line just constantly moves as time goes by. it would be more appropriate to just call them 'old'. nu Ganker sux so we will have aging older millenials and gen x retards that cant cope with the pasgodgsdkjfs;diojfg
MAKE IT STOP
damn, you mindbroken boomers will be in denial that the ps2 is retro even when its 50 years old. this is just sad
The PS2 is retro because it's now 3 gens old. NES was considered retro by the time PS2 came out.
The PS2 is retro because the sticky on Ganker says so.
Not a bad argument.
>Please fucking die.
itt: assblasted zoomies
It's right on the edge. Early PS2 is retro but by the end it was modern gaming.
There was a time where games from 5 years ago felt like another lifetime. Doom was cutting edge in 1993, then 3 years later you had Quake. The changes were fucking huge. The last 20 years everything is the fucking same, things have just gotten slightly prettier over time.
We've reached a technical point where you can do almost anything so we're really unlikely to see any leaps like Doom to Quake anymore.
20 years or older is the only proper way to define retro. Anything else is arbitrary and makes any kind of classification useless as a result.
>retro is after X date (the original Ganker criteria)
Arbitrary. Was the Nintendo 64 considered retro in March 2000, three months after Dec 31, 1999? The Gamecube wasn't even released then. What about in 2001? 2002? On what date did the N64 switch from being not retro to retro, and why that date specifically?
>retro is anything non-HD
Wii was 480p. Wii is retro.
>retro is anything not capable of 3D
The SNES had Star Fox. SNES is not retro.
>retro is a style, not an age
First, that makes any modern game that tries to emulate Gen 5 and older games retro in themselves. Don't you dare tell me you think Shovel Knight or fucking Celeste is retro.
Second, I would argue that the modern shift to games as a service with constant online, microtransactions, and the idea of "the publishers can shut down the game anytime they want" is a significant paradigm shift on the same level as the shift from score-based arcade ports to longer campaign-based games.
