There was atleast a big difference in style and gameplay when it came to SNES vs PS2. But PS3 vs PS5 is next to no difference. People still play Minecraft, people still play GTA V.

Exactly my point. Up until the 6th gen, the industry was being lead by people that wanted to be there because they were passionate about what they were doing.
The people in charge now are the ones who got into the industry 20 years ago, when they saw how much money could be made in it. Fewer releases, safer releases, aggressive monetization - we've "stagnated" because gaming has been optimized to be a profit-generating machine.
As much as you hate it as a player, it's working extremely well for the people making them.
We can't move forward with studios like Bungie who keep telling the devs to do less work out of fear of "overdelivering"

When I was trading in my ps3 at gamestop recently, I don't think the cashier had even seen a ps3 ultra slim before, it was like it was a nes or snes or something by how they reacted.
I figured retro was over 20 years as a rule. I think the 360 will qualify next year and the ps3/Wii the one after.
