The real problem with the game isn't the MTX or performance. It's that it's disappointing. It's a step forward from Dragon's Dogma in some areas, and steps back in others. The main story is like 4 hours long, and so many people have legitimately accidentally beat the game since they didn't think that'd be the end. The Endgame is a giant step down from DD1, there's less enemy variety than even the BASE game for dd1, yes the base game, NOT Dark Arisen. You have less abilities at any given time than the first game, which is only a good thing if you ask someone who fricking hates fun. Exploration is less rewarding than Breath of the Wild when it gives you a shitty weapon that'll break, most rewards in this game for exploring, aside from a few spots, are materials. I hate it so much, the core is so good and it falls flat on its face. Itsuno is a fricking hack, this is Dragon's Dogma without the budget restrictions and 60% being cut? Frick you.

Basically this, portcrystals should just be for reaching areas you want to get to easily, not as a mandatory placement for one of the game's two capital cities. You don't need them in the smaller towns linked by ox carts but the main towns and elftown should definitely have them.
It's also unforgivable that one of the portcrystals you can get in a playthrough is permanently missable.

          Anonymous

Well I've played a lot of open world games where even if you do JUST the main story and that's it, it still takes you 20+ hours, which is a respectable length. You shouldn't have to do a million sidequests just to get a good playtime out of the game.

            Anonymous

From what I've found. You can kill every single quest giving npc in the game and still beat the game. So the "Main quest" isn't even a main quest if you don't even need to participate in it let alone finish it.

              Anonymous

You don't "need" to finish any game, but that doesn't change the fact that every game has a main storyline that plays the credits when you beat it. I have no idea what point you're trying to make here.

And then I gave him the benefit of the doubt and gave him a chance to realize how stupid his statement was, but instead he claimed victory and ran away.

I feel similar. I wasn't expecting an 80 hour long JRPG plotline with a frickton of dialogue and a bunch of throw away lore, but the story is genuinely weak. The story of the first one, barring how defeating the Dragon fricked up everything, is nothing special but feels like it serves a purpose.
The point of gameplay I find most contentious is the sheer amount of trash enemies dotted everywhere. I understand trying to not have shit be boring, but fighting Goblins, Harpies, Bandits and Saurians every two fricking minutes is not engaging but tedious. If you fought the bigger creatures, with a few more variants, more frequently it would probably be better.

      Anonymous

Every 2 minutes is a bit generous. I usually see the next pack of enemies I have to kill while I'm fighting the current pack. I remember my pawn was taking me to a location and no shit we had 15 encounters with enemies before we got to the chest. It was actually ridiculous.

It reminds of MMO world design. Just throw as much chaff in an area to grind and farm on.

The microtransactions shit was ALWAYS a shill talking point

The most important things for discuss about this game is
        1) it runs like total dogshit on both console and PC
        2) it’s a step back from the first game, a game known for being unrealized potential

It’s legit a 6/10 game. But by dominating the discussion with microtransaction talk they controlled the narrative to prevent people from saying: just buy the old game for far less money, this game isn’t very good.

The MTX's are shitty, but hardly the worst aspect. They are mostly just crap you can get in game anyway without spending a dime and exist for lazy morons. The game has much greater issues than them.

Haven't started it yet but I avoided both marketing and most threads so my expectations are pretty tempered. I'm going to go in expecting a different take on the same ideas and not the dream game I wanted ever since I beat DA.

The original had great individual characters carrying it. Grigori, Edmun, Selene, Mercedes, Julien. Each were compelling enough on their own even if the core plot was just kind of there up until the Grigori confrontation and its consequences. Daimon's whole deal is also compelling but it's explicitly just a hitch in the cycle.

      Anonymous

I think you and this thread are missing the target audience for DD.

You say they should add more large monsters instead of the same goblin, harpy, and saurian spam. But I say why? Capcom already has a series entirely dedicated to fighting large monsters. Dragon’s Dogma isn’t for this audience. It’s for the skyrim types of people. It’s FOR the people who want to fight goblins and saurians 24-7. There are people who did this for 300 hours in the first game and call it the greatest game of all time. Even the big fans of stuff like other capcom games like MH or RE don’t typically laud that achievement for their favorite games.

It’s for a very specific audience. It came out at the end of the Japanese fiscal year, and its sales expectations are actually quite low. They basically wanted to capture the autist audience, and hope for a slight streamer fotm boost. People say but capcom could easily reuse some monster hunter assets and skeletons for more large monster variety: the audience doesn’t want that. They want goblins.

            Anonymous

The reason for that one is because it's an early-game story quest that separates the intro from the rest of the game and is infamously slow because it's an escort mission. It's the exception because of that fact, and all the random encounters people remember are with larger monsters. Night time wolf ambushes are up there too but that's more the shock the first time it happens.

    >It's a step forward from Dragon's Dogma in some areas, and steps back in others.
Honestly the more I play and more I think about it, what areas is it a step forward in? The overworld feels like a chore to traverse with trash mobs around every corner, the set of vocations are terrible compared to 1, there are less setpiece battles in the main story, there is no Dark Arisen style endgame... etc. etc.
DD2 was supposed to be everything we wanted, right now it's LESS than Dark Arisen.

step up in scale (land mass), thats pretty much it. The NPCs are not memorable at all this time around. No bleating she-goat, no shameless harlot, no Julian GUAN SEES, no Feste, no Edmun Dragonsbane choking out his wife in a drunken rage, no Savan. Even the Dragonforged, who appeared as a wise battle-hardened veteran in the first game, comes off as a moronic bumbling hobo in this one. The Pathfinder keeps rambling like an upjumped zealot

Have they said anything about post-launch content? It really feels like the foundation is there, but 50% or more of the content beyond that was cut.

You could easily fit 3 DA-sized expansions in DD2 and not make it feel bloated. In fact it would probably start feeling complete only once all 3 are released.

Surely Capcom won't be moronic, shit out one medium sized content DLC, and then abandon it, right?

Doubt it, but it depends on Capcom's possibly insane expectations.

Also I gotta ask, how is it ever a problem for a game to have too much content? The idea that a game could be "bloated" is ridiculous to me. I'm not gonna complain that a game has more stuff to do, especially in an era where games cost over $70.

It depends how it's handled. Ever booted up some F2P MMO that has been out for years, only to be swamped by 50 popups, 20 NPCs giving you weird quests that don't fit with the intro sequence of the game, and 10 different semi-isolated mechanics/minigames?

If it's handled properly, it's not an issue.

I'm gonna be honest with you guys It's been so long since i have enjoyed any game around. Last time was when i finished Witcher 3 and it was soooo long time ago. Usually i play MMO games but as many you guys know, MMO's are just copy pasta these days and if they are not made by big company, the projects are laking and unfinished without any updates. Well, in these times were gaming was not fun to me anymore... Dragon's Dogma 2 just hop in to my radar and i have so much FUN man, holly molly! To be honest, i was waiting a online option where i can play with my friends or other people but as far as i see the way they integrated the pawn system, i feel like i have been playing with the real players. If you are new player and one of your friend just wipe everything in game with his/her pawn, you will just get that pawn for free (If you both are friends on Steam, it's 0 RC except level difference between you and pawn is 10+ it reqs 15-20K RC which cost a lot of $) and the pawn will just guide you through hole game man! Who would have thought of this system before? Not me for sure, since i'm stuck with bunch of copy pasta MMO's around. Tho i'm not playing any of them right now but still... The gameplay, mechanics, atmosphere, mythical creatures, big bosses, dragons and such all the other stuff, man i'm in love with this game. I'll accept that the game has some FPS issues specially in towns and in city. BBut i did notice it was RTX ON option for me, looks like RTX is not working super great so at that moment so i turn it off. Even i have the first Dragon's Dogma game which i never wanted to play, i felt like i didn't miss anything in 2nd game. About gameplay how it works and some different storys as much about dragon blood etc. Devs said, it will be huge game and i can literally say don't be mistaken by seeing every corner with sea, the game has insane buildings with insanely huge underground. And bitter black isle? Just a copy and pasted dungeon crawler with 4 repeated rooms and corridors, the occasional repeated cave and about 4 new bosses.
What does DDDA actually do well as a game? It has a dogshit storyline, dogshit NPCs with some of the worst old English dialogue anyone has ever written, a dogshit romance system. Seriously what is so great about this game? I haven't finished it yet, but it feels like an early access game. It's got like a third of the content, variety, and depth of Dark Arisen. It's not a bad game, but it feels more like the barebones foundation of a game than a finished product.

It feels like Capcom rushed the game out for the yearly earnings report, it wouldn’t shock me if there was a ton of content they had to cut to meet some arbitrary deadline. There’s definitely a good foundation for a game here but if i’m honest I don’t think even a Dark Arisen style expansion could salvage it unless they pulled off a genuine miracle.

          >It feels like Capcom rushed the game out for the yearly earnings report,
That's exactly what they did, they released the game one week before the cutoff of march 31. and week 1 sales are always the highest for any game release. The game being buggy wouldn't impact their earnings report much if at all. I don't expect we'll get any serious patches until April when Capcom shifts into thinking about NEXT year, but Capcom already has Monster Hunter to lean on (which will also be buggy).

Are you really surprised? This is the same thing they did with the first game. Push out a half-assed game and then a year later release the finished version of the game.

I was under the impression this game was open world, but it's actually just a bunch of hallways with sun and trees. All the caves look the same, loot is boring, the environments are dull, uninspired, and samey, the game has no atmosphere whatsoever, pawns are soulless beings who just annoy the shit out of me, and the enemy variety is fricking tragic.

The only time I have fun is fighting the big beasts, which are nowhere near as common as I had hoped, so it's just 90% killing goblins and lizardmen. Which, at that point, given how much the game is lacking in so many other areas, why not just play Monster Hunter at that point? I wanted to like this game, and I did for the first 10 hours or so because it has a lot of good ideas, but it's just so blatantly halfbaked idk if I can stomach another 20 looking for boring weapons and fighting the same 3 mobs over and over.

DD2 looking worse than every single one of its competitors should speak for itself though, DD1 actually had impressive visuals when compared to Dark Souls and Skyrim.

those rocks are from quixel mega scans. the ambient occlusion is removed from the color map, and can be used separately if needed. the problem with photorealism is you don't want ao baked into the image, but the lighting isn't good enough to compensate, so what you get is flat rocks.

This is a weird pattern I'm noticing with Capcom where they remake one of their old games, and the remake isn't exactly a horrible game on its own, but somehow manages to significantly reduce the amount of content. Happens all the time with Resident Evil too. I'm not sure if it costs too much money to make a game so they're forced to cut stuff, or if it's a grander problem with games where they're intentionally doing less work, and charging more for less content because players will buy it anyway.

Someone explain to me why these devs haven't learnt the same lessons From Software learnt from Dark Souls 2's reception and how players are willing to accept crushing difficulty if they are not forced to feel punished for their mistakes? For every actual hardcore gamer it's obvious that the average player is moronic and will scoff at even a TINY inconvenience, which is thy FromHacks decided to have fast travel in their games from the very start.

What is immersive friction? Is that like media literacy and artificial difficulty?

        Anonymous

Immersive friction is just a fancy way of saying the game is hard. Unlike media literacy and artificial difficulty which are clear and easy to understand, it's just someone coming up with a pretentious way of phrasing a simple concept.

          Anonymous

I would have guessed it meant a conflict between the game being immersive and being a game.
So are they saying the game is hard or easy?

            Anonymous

Well it's hard in the sense that it makes you uncomfortable, referring to how the game doesn't have easily accessible fast travel. It's "immersive" to have to walk everywhere, but that causes "friction" meaning the player feels uncomfortable by doing it.

If it does well enough for DD3, maybe that will be the one they put real money into. Not to say that a low budget game is necessarily bad, just that this isn't the AAA game people were hoping for.

It's better than the first game in literally every way. The world is gigantic, combat flows way better, the small enemies have way more complex pack AI, more and more interesting quests, more little dungeons to explore. At least at the start, it has that BotW feel where there are literally no wrong paths to take, there's an adventure in every direction even if you take the weirdest most circuitous route you can.

    >ohhhhh the enemy variety the enemy variety

I like the game but like the first game I don't enjoy inventory management & backtracking sucks, the latter wouldn't be such an issue if the main quest & vocation related stuff didn't force it. I basically got punished for exploring on my own by getting sent back to some of the same exact areas I already cleared. I probably wouldn’t hate backtracking so much if there was more variety, goblin, wolf, harpy variant spam gets very old, same with the ogre & cyclops, those are waaay overused.
When I'm just wandering around aimlessly, the world design is pretty damn good.
I'm basically torturing myself by playing no mod vanilla first time through, I might crack & get some QOL mods before I finish the game.

If you like DD2, then definitely play DD1. They are different, but you should enjoy it. It's hard for me to perfectly judge because obviously I played DD1 first.
Only thing I would say is give it a break 1st, they are very similar, so I feel going straight to DD1 from 2 might get you burned out fast.

oh yeah unless you like a pawn and take them on a longer journey I can see why that quest wouldn't work out, plus game kinda gets easier as you go along, with some ocassional jumps in difficulty but still very manageable, so I guess choosing a common enemy to kill could be worthwhile.

itsuno doesnt know what made dark arisen good. the reality is people love BBI because they love the combat, sure the exploration and quests are alot better in 2 but thats not why people played and loved DDDA. the combat is arguably better aswell but...for what? there is no endgame, theres no ng+ scaling, theres nothing. ill beat this and probably not replay it until the dlc comes out or maybe ill frick with mods, hell you cant even make a new character right now cause capcom is moronic.

nta but that's really not saying much
DDDA exploration (if you want to call it that) was very railroaded
the quests were also very basic fetch or kill x amount of y
people don't want to admit but DDDA was just good combat + art direction and that went a long way to cover up (most of) its shortcomings

DDA does still have good exploration imo, better then most games. But DD2 definitely does it better by a very wide margine.

it really, really does not, the world is very empty and you fight the same 3 enemies everywhere and you go into a copy pasted cave and find nothing, exploration in DDA is worthless and it's only slightly better in DD2

I enjoy the verticality that makes navigation more challenging and so you actually need to pay attention when getting to specific areas of interest, comboed with the physics based movements/animations. If you are just taking main roads of course that's pretty chill, but soon as you head offroad, things get interesting.

The only challenging thing about navigation in DD2 is trying to climb a slope angled at 20 degrees without sliding back down like you're on your way to a gachimuchi production.

Finished the game about an hour ago. While I liked it quite a bit and couldn't stop playing it, it is definitely a side grade to the first game. The main story is trash. Starts out well enough, but after you get to Battahl it just feels unfinished. There just aren't enough big moments like the first game. They should have made a few of the side quests in the game part of the main quest. Speaking of that, there are some good side quests in the game that take you to cool places and even have full on cutscenes, but it's way too easy to miss them. The combat is way better than the first though, and I hope we get some kind of BBI expansion for it. The world is also way more fun to explore, with tons of cool little hidden areas.

One thing that did piss me off; I missed the entire colossus fight because the game started the event when I went into the backdoor of the volcanic island. The whole fight just played out without me even being there.

There are now large groups of gamers that get more enjoyment out of trying to TORtanic releases than actually spending time playing games. They just spend all their time finding videos of e-celebs saying "game bad" and taking hundreds of screenshots a day of sales charts and posting them online. They don't actually play games or form their own opinions about anything.

Even the performance issues are overblown out of some minor drops in a single city. I'm running it at 4k/60fps on a 3090 and the game looks great

Once again 99% of the complaints come from poorgays who are surprised they can't run a game in 2024 on their fricking 970 lol

                And everything inbetween a 3090 and a 970?
Not to mention the problem isn't GPU based, it's CPU based as people report it. Underutilizing cores while overusing others.
Not the first game to fall in this pitfall and it ain't a end user issue even if they're poorgays with potato PCs which wouldn't run DD2 even if it was optimized.

The point is your 999 thread CPU ends up as underutilized as 32 thread CPU.
It's an objective issue Capcom has to fix even if poorhomosexuals will never be able to run this game, no matter what.

dullahans are cool, shame I've only seen a single one and it was quest-related.
I've also only seen like 1 lich and 2 chimeras. Doesn't need to be boss rush mode like BBI, but use them more.
The enemy variety really wouldn't be that bad if monsters were distributed more evenly throughout the world, that's the real issue, not that they removed a handful of enemies and added some new ones to replace them.

nta but dullahans aren't similar to BBI living armors at all. They're way more interesting than the oversized humanoid fighter AI enemy that living armors are.

Each region just have recolors for the basic enemies like goblins, harpies, saurians and bandits.
For boss enemies, Battahl has new ones like golem and medusa (hidden away in a single cave), otherwise the bosses from the first region get a new recolor.
        I don't think there's a new field boss in the 3rd region.

The real problem with the game is title screen music, it's such a soulless downgrade compared to DD1 or DD:DA. everything else is exactly how I wanted and I'm having a blast, just more Dragon's Dogma 1 with its unique jank, but bigger

    Trust the plan

There's a reason it says "Dragon's Dogma" at the title screen with no 2. We just played the prologue.

Next, they're going to include the entirety of Dragon's Dogma 1 as a full remake into this game as an expansion, followed by the final expansion, "Dragon's Dogma 2".

      >at the title screen with no 2
because the entire game is a no. 2 (aka a piece of shit LOL)

Isn't the reason there's no 2 is because it's a time loop so the world just resets at the end each time, and then they add the 2 later? By the way I haven't actually played the game so I'm just making all this up.

It's so tiresome. This was the only game i was remotely excited for because i loved the first one DESPITE its flaws. In my mind the biggest flaw was lack of content because the game ended very quickly, the map wasn't as big as it initially seemed, and the game didn't have varied anough areas with different, more difficultt enemies to fight as you progressed. I thought DD2 would at least fix that only to be a repeat of the cycle once more. Back to emulating games until i die, i'm glad new people are enjoying the game.

Before this release I kind of would've agreed, as historically Capcom has been putting out some decent expansions for stuff like MH. So I could see a quality expansion come out for DD2.
But also before DD2 I was of the opinion that Capcom was putting out some decent PC ports. And that viewpoint has been shattered so who the frick knows.

At this point the only thing saving the game is if they will milk it like MH World and keep adding content and updates and then drop a big DLC.
