Its not any dumber than purely evil races. They both exist to be the moral policeman that makes sure that you know who is and isn't okay to kill.

OP's problem isn't with clear good and evil existing, but with morality clearly following factional lines. This is easily fixed by throwing in a few noble antagonists and some morally questionable allies.

I have a white whale of a campaign pitch set in the 4e-era Realms where you play as a Sembian insurgency (with Cormyrian funding) vaguely picking up the imagery and ideals of the Harpers, because they're useful symbols for the fight against foreign Netherese rule.

Sadly, it'll never happen, because I'm one of about a dozen 4e Realms fans on the planet.

Don’t worry Anon, it’s you an my mom

But Cormyr and the Harpers fricking despise Sembia more than anything. Those sanctimonious pricks probably got a boner when the shadowgays did their power move, it absolved them from any moral dilemmas their goons could have while dicking with Sembia for the benefit of elves and dalelanders. Cormyr and the Harpers funding a sembian resistance movement? By the Hells, why not just ask fricking Thay or the Aboleths to help? At least sembian citizens would not get lectured about how awesome Mystra and the elves are every step of the way while being occupied and stripped of every single one of their rights because one of their ancestors had the audacity of felling a tree or told a cormyrian baron to frick off from his property! Frick Cormyr, frick the elves, frick the Dales, but, most of all, frick Mystra. Miklos Selkirk lives!

Netheril isn't going to stop with Sembia - they poached one Dale and are making moves on other ones. "Liberating" Sembia (and thereby putting them significantly in your debt) both expands Cormyrian hegemony and denies the Netherese their beachhead into the Heartlands.

            Anonymous

It's that whole "expanding Cormyrian hegemony" business that should piss off every sembian regardless of the netherese stomping around. It would mean exchanging an evil overlord with another one. Any sembian that would accept cormyrian, dalelander, harper or elven "help" would be just endangering his people as much as those who support the shadowgays. Sembia can only be truly liberated by sembians, only a desperate war of resistence against every foreign oppressor, including those who come as "friends" could be acceptable. In all seriousness, I want to see something different than the usual good guys who can't do no wrong saving the day, this stupid shit has plagued the setting since it's creation. I would totally sign up to play a campaign which is essentially Fantasy V-Visitors with shadow people instead of lizard people. Also, I hope the shades nuke Cormyr and rape Mystra before they get fricked by sembian insurgency and said sembians are finally free to kick the shit of every tree-hugging hippie scumbag between their nation and Impiltur.

Mystra is dead in 4e, you goober, and your weirdo hate boner for capital-g Good guys in a classic D&D setting is absurd. You should consider actually playing some games.

                >Mystra is dead in 4th
Yeah, until she suddendly comes back shitting the setting with her casterhomosexualry, like she always does. Also, her servants continue to scheme and wave their dicks like it's nothing.
                >capital-g good guys
                >having people assassinated because their actions could change their preferred status quo in any way is totally good
                >as is funding and supporting all kinds of political strife in several nations because they rival them or their protectorates or dare to put someone that isn't their puppet on their thrones
Frick off, hippie. Cormyr and the Harpers are no better than Thay and the Zhents, the only difference is that they have plot armor and get their dicks sucked by every FR author.

Don't forget the Harpers are also responsible for telling spelljammers and aliens to frick off so that no fun can ever be allowed on their world/realm.
