I don't disagree but it's hard to go back to the bad pathfinding and stubborn/slow sims
Was it this or Sims 2 that had pets going wild and destroying things in public lots?

It was a really nice game, I remember it very fondly. I think I only played The Sims 2 for like 5 minutes and I don't remember anything except that I felt it completely soulless. I'm surprised to learn that they kept doing new versions and there's a Sims 4 now.

i liked sims 2 it was pretty good. I never played any of the expansions though. I would just start a game and buy the biggest plot of land I could afford and then see if I could get the guy to survive. I'd end up having to build the tiniest house with just enough room for a bed and a shower and essential stuff and go from there. It was more fun that way because probably more than half the time I'd frick it up and have to start again so it was like a challenge. Sims 3 wasn't so bad either but they simplified it a lot so it just got boring pretty quickly

yeah but they should have added balconies, the intro is false advertising

not only could you build them but one of the prebuilts from the base game has not one but two balconies

If you want a balcony to stick out more you just have to add pillars/supports and then delete them.

This was a game for females. I own it and its sequels but have never played any of them. I have watched females playing them. It seems to have no point to it.

If you don't get constant social stimulation you become a weeping mess that can barely hold down a job.

        Sims 2 was better.

Probably a troon since it refers to women as "females"

When I was a kid, one of my friends had his deadbeat uncle living in the basement of his house. This dude literally played the Sims all day.

It's my personal favorite too, but I think The Sims 2 was a very worthy sequel. I liked both of those games a lot.
I skipped 3, but I tried 4 (years after it launched and heavily on sale) and was pretty nonplussed. I played maybe five hours of it and got my fill.

The first game definitely had the best overall atmosphere and humor. It's basically timeless.
IMO though the second game has a fantastic atmosphere all its own and it's just as nostalgic as well.

Even til this day, Sims 4 is mostly played by women.

I think it had much less to do with that and way more to do with the recent success of the Harry Potter multimedia franchise.

Women care more about design and customization in games than men do, typically, and the Sims is based entirely around those concepts.

The only SIM games I ever played were back in the 90s, SIMCity, SIMAnt and then The Sims. I have no good subjectivity to base your, or my, comparisons to except that I'll say you're 100% correct.

Best game in the series for sure, kino soundtrack, great atmosphere, challenging gameplay and the series wasn't afraid to use horror movie tropes sometimes (remember the prank calls? Those were so damn good). I still have my complete collection CD but my new computer doesn't have a disk drive I might have to download it somewhere.

      <- listen to this.

The Sims 2 wasn't bad, nice continuation to The Sims 1 but the art style wasn't as good. The Sims 3 had interesting ideas (open-world and the customization features for the furniture). The Sims 4 people play for the porn mods lol.

      Is it still active/populated?

At first they are kinda stressful when you're learning how to make income and balancing your Sim's needs. To make more money, you gotta make those career making moves like maxing out the stats relevant to the career.
