A lot of games are inaccessible to me because I'm a shitter with poor manual dexterity and terrible spatial intelligence. It's why I mainly play RPGs

      Anonymous

Any examples? Like games you can tell are good and "really wanted to like," but couldn't, not because their flaws tipped the scales too far, but because you just couldn't mesh with what it was going for?

Like for me and RE3, the prospect of encountering Nemesis and having that make a significant dent in my health or ammo resources always makes me too anxious to finish the game. It's for that exact reason that I think Nemesis is a GOOD inclusion, because it logically builds on the sort of planning anxiety that the series operated on. But adding Nemmy to the mix, while brilliant in how it tops off that design philosophy, just makes it to where I'm not having a good time anymore.

        >because it logically builds on the sort of planning anxiety that the series operated on
Yeah this is what Resident Evil is all about. Capcom knew what they were doing when they called it SURVIVAL horror. There are very few horror games that are like this. For example, everyone categorizes Silent Hill as survival horror too but I disagree, Konami themselves referred to SH1 as 'horror adventure' when it first came out. Both RE and SH are anxiety inducing but they achieve it differently. Therefore I find it really dumb when some people claim that RE isn't a horror franchise

Classic RE is horror. RE4 is action.

the mission structure combined with the obscurity of the puzzles while kind of cool killed it for me as a horror game. immediately lost any tension when I went into the point and click bruteforce every possible solution mode.

Took me too long to get past the first boss. Once I have the time I'll give it another try. Also don't tell anyone but I'm stuck in the first Halo because I picked Heroic and got screwed by a save point that put me in front of 4 waves of the flood with no ammo and my last health bar. I keep trying to get out but the best I do is the 3rd wave but I get one shot by the big dudes.

Literally this. I suck at strategies because I lack rational thinking. I suck at FPS because I lack good aiming skills.
I suck at rhythm games because I lack musical hearing.
Too slow for most shmups, too dumb for logic games.

      The list goes on.

There are several games I dropped because I lost all my interest, but right now I only remember one game that I was enjoying and I had to abandon because it was too difficult for me, Hitman Codename 47. UNDERRAIL
It's fun, it's interesting, it's challenging, it's TOO challenging, and that's the point, you're supposed to feel how hard it actually is to not only survive, but grow stronger as you explore the post apocalypse world. This is compounded by the fact that the "real" experience is a leveling system that depends on you finding interesting items rather than leveling up from combat.

The game itself is not complex, but it's very elaborate, unlike a normie rpg you actually benefit from getting that helmet with +2 acid resistance, and if you try to even out your stats you will frick yourself in the ass because there is no way to survive by being a little bit ok at everything, you need to minmax any skill you actually want to use.

CV - you get the handgun in the next room. And knife is literally OP and you should use knife anyway for the first hour or two of the game, you can stack so much ammo. If you enjoy other classic RE games you really should revisit that game. Its quite long and it does the RE formula well, dated visuals and simplistic gameplay aside.

For Dino Crisis 1 I feel you. I didn't like how different it was to RE, I didnt like that there was no clear cut health bar, didnt like the full 3d gray and dull environments and found the atmosphere to be lacking. It felt like a RE without anything that makes RE good.

During development of RE2 in 1997, Capcom hired Noboru Sugimura to handle the screenwriting. He was a professional TV writer and wasn't happy with the limitations of video game design but wanted to change that. He founded Flagship as a writer's college, and made deals with Nintendo and Capcom to provide professional writers for games. Incidentally, this is why RE2 has so many subplots going on independently (police corruption, serial killers, corporate espionage, Sherry's story, etc.) - because he wrote it like the game was the season finale of a TV show.

When Capcom expanded its operations, they relied heavily on Flagship, with Sugimura becoming the unofficial creative director of the franchise. As a result, games like CODE:Veronica, Resident Evil 0 and the prototype Resident Evil 4 games draw heavily from the tokusatsu TV genre, with Sugimura often re-using elements from Super Sentai episodes he wrote for the games. They introduced ideas like ancient superhumans and superpowers, and some very goofy villain ideas you'd expect in tokusatsu, but at the same time talk extensively about corporate intrigue, eugenics and Fascism.

Sugimura left Capcom in 2004, and died in February the next year, but because he did a lot to shift Capcom's operations they still rely on his story notes for modern RE games.

TL;DR - CV is part of RE's early development as it was trying to advance itself as a legitimate narrative-driven series (for Japan at least), but outside of Japan it comes across as weird - like tokusatsu itself.

The worst part about 0 is that you can get softlocked after slogging through it for hours. Literally no one wants to restart the game or run around searching for ammo and herbs while avoiding bullshit enemies and being low on health. A badly designed survival horror game can be the most frustrating experience one can have in a video game. Even more so than a poorly balanced RPG

For me it's the micromanagement of 2 characters, really takes away from the horror and feels like a chore. And what really pissed me off was the vague item descriptions, I had no idea the metal piece I picked up was part of the clock, i was stuck for like an hour and when I finally figured it out I was so mad I stopped playing. I wasn't having fun anyway so why force myself.

I was playing it on the Gamecube, I'd most likely just start using Cheat Engine after that bullshit centipede boss fight if I were on PC. Wow sorry for not knowing I was supposed to bring a million grenade rounds and shotgun shells with me because I didn't expect to fight a boss that has like a million hitpoints! I don't really understand what Capcom was thinking with this, people always say that CV is the black sheep of the series but not only is it overall a perfectly serviceable game, it's a masterpiece compared to 0

Age of Empires 2. The first one wasn't too bad, a struggle at times, but the sequel just gets insane with needing to rush in every mission. I am not very good at rushing things and my enemies end up highly leveling over me. People talk about stuff like The Great Hunt in AoE1, but there I had plenty of time to strategize each part and save scum my way to victory. Usually in AoE1, the strategy was just to find some remote corner of the map where the enemy didn't find you until you were ready to overwhelm them with a completely maxed pop count.

Years of playing, I feel lucky to have beaten the second Joan of Arc mission once. The third one was absolutely impossible.

dont get me wrong i dont think its that hard, but after 3 playthrough of MGS1,i still find myself dying or being in trouble more often than other games you mentioned, what helps in MGS is knowing all the trick and using all the weapons and items, for example metal gear rex is so fricking hard before you know to use chaff and later stun grenade,i also have to stay on my toe when fighting gray fox and sniper wolf if i dont use the medication,im sure there are other part but to make it short i have to be more alert and concentrate while playing mgs1 where as in RE i can be more laid back and silent hill its mostly the puzzles that are the roadblock on a first playthrough.

tbh maybe I'm a tryhard but I think normal if anything is too easy in 1, you don't really need to engage with most of the boss fights and can just mess your way through them first try.

They made the hard difficulty normal internationally, which is such a dick move. On easy they feel much more balanced

    Digimon World 1, honestly.

The mechanics seem simple but there's so much esoteric information that isn't delivered to the player. Even following old guides from based forum days, I couldn't understand how the mechanics worked in practice. Let me give you an example
    >fanmade evolution chart says X Digimon needs X, Y, and Z amounts of certain stats to digivolve a certain way
    >Ok, simple enough, let's start training with the first stat
    >halfway into training, Digimon evolved earlier than expected
    >usually Numemon unless I'm lucky to get another Champion
    >unknown if I've made any Care Mistakes
Numemon is a waste of time until you unlock Monzaemon, so in the early game you're just fricked.

I might just be moronic or missing something fundamental but I truly have tried to understand this shit.

I started playing RE3 recently and I was enjoying up until I got to the Nemesis fight at the Clock Tower. I dropped it there, it was just frustrating. I don't know if it's my controls (I'm on a Retroid Pocket 3+), but I can't do the dodge move no matter what, so he just pummels her to death in a few hits and he has so much health that I can't outlast him.

Stay at mid range. Do not go too close at to be grabbed, but do not go too far either or that's when he'll start running, and his run-punch is really hard to dodge.

So, shoot 1-3 times (depending on the weapon), move a little, repeat.

If he gets pissed or get too close, dodge by going towards his non attacking arm.

also, if you're down or get grabbed, spam all buttons. if you're wounded, you'll have a harder time getting back up, so don't hesitate to heal after just 2 hits.

Why are you just standing idle like an idiot and trying to tank Nemesis hoping you can plummet it to hell through sheer firepower? You can defeat Nemesis even without dodging. Let it come at you and attack you, then evade him and use the opening to position yourself and fire before Nemesis can reach you.

        Anonymous

Not that anon but it's very hard to evade his attacks like you would in any other RE game. It was all obviously built around the dodging mechanic, otherwise if you just try to traditionally 'run to the side' he'll still hit you, it feels like Capcom made it so that his attacks would home in on Jill most of the time

It's no different than trying to dodge the Tyrant claw in Resident Evil 1 or 2. Today you can play on emulators using save states to pratice. Being dogshit at these games is no excuse these days. Unless you're brainlet like this anon

Get all of your healing items out of the magic box and just tank him. Jill will inevitably dodge some of his attacks if you just spam the action button while aiming. I won't defend the Nemesis fights because they are objectively bullshit when it's your first time playing. It's simply not worth it to git gud, they are not fun, that's why I think it's better to just unload everything you have on him and heal through the damage

NTA, but there's nothing wrong with using save states to practice something before doing a proper run. If you use save states to beat the game, then yeah, you didn't really beat the game. But using saves to states to, for example, practice fighting a boss, so that you know ahead of time how to fight it effectively during a proper no-save-state run, is perfectly fine.

That's how I got all the chaos emeralds in Sonic 2 but I 'cheated' even more. I had an emulator open on PC and starting from bonus stage 4, before every bonus stage I stood up, went to my PC and practiced it on an emulator. Then I went back to my TV, grabbed the controller and did it on console. Did I do the right thing? Absolutely, frick chaos emeralds in any Sonic game. Your retelling reminds me of the nightmare it was to defeat Mundus on DMC1 Dante Must Die rank S first time. It was unbearable to have to go through of its first form over and over again without a turbo controller only to lose my nerves as I was trying to learn my way around its second form. I must have spent 4 nights trying to sucessfully defeat it, with the first form being defeated the first night and pretty much mastered by the time I finally got him. Such a painful and frustrating experience because I could never dedicate all my energy and focus to the actual hard part of the battle.

Silent Hill 1 doesn't have fixed camera angles though and it's also not nearly as difficult as RE. Even on Hard I'd say that Silent Hill is a much more pleasent experience if it didn't compensate for everything by being so scary that you have to actually stop playing and take a break from time to time

        Anonymous

Silent Hill 1's difficulty (or any of the other entries of the series, for that matter) reallt shines through when you attempt a 10 star ranking. It demolishes any challenge any Resident Evil has to offer and it's a shame Capcom never made its ranking system with such complexity and prowness - you pretty much have to come up with your own arbitrary rules for it.

I think it's been awhile since you've done a playthrough. standard enemies are as tanky as zombies and they all come at a dead sprint. then you have the instakill final boss you essentially have to cheese. its only diminished somewhat by being able to potion chug.

who cares how tanky they are,you can stunlock all of them with the axe or hammer whatever its been a while since i played but the only roadblocks were the puzzle that also arent point and click hard.

          Anonymous

You don't have to kill a single enemy in school (I agree that it's hard to dodge them, the school on hard is pretty challenging) and then when you obtain the hammer... yeah, it destroys everything even on hard. I actually did a playthrough in February. The easiest RE game is probably RE2 and it's still more challenging than SH1 on hard

Classic RE is horror. RE4 is action.

all RE are action,a true horror game is something like Siren.

          RE1, REmake and 0 = survival horror
2,3 and CV = action horror. 4 essentialy has the same vibe and I'd even say that it's a bit spookier than 2 and 3

I wouldn't call having to rely on a single overpowered cheese stunlock mechanic to overcome tanky enemies to be pleasant.

I keep getting my ass kicked only like 4 stages in, seems like it takes forever for your characters to actually level up and gain any useful skills, i ended up grinding, replaying the first 2 or 3 stages until i get frustrated with my characters only being able to do shit like throwing rocks, and i quit
