The world feels miserable to explore. None of it is inviting, no curiosity, just constant threat after threat.
Everything is dead. Even the friendly NPCs only have a few lines, none of them really memorable. You're just going from one place to another, just for the sake of covering the endless spanning puke yellow fields.

The music is fucking mind numbing. The same unchanging ambience, coupled with generic combat music, for hours, and hours, and hours.

This game makes me feel dead inside.

It is an exploration game you need to invest in. I bet you rushed through it all, missing all those non respawnable plants and shit. Totally ignoring the environmental storytelling in all its environmental glory. The problem is you being an unappreciative bitch.

Elden Ring has far more occult and alchemical references than Dark Souls, though. The world of ER is more disturbing beneath the surface than DS, which relies on its surface being disturbing. There is more substance to the world of ER. It is more materialistic too. There is deeper lore and implication regarding the magic and the crafting and the nature of the world’s soft physics.

I'm a lorelet but the major timeline is easy to piece.
          >Primordial times - crucible tree, death birds, giants, dragon lords ruling the land
          >Greater Will arrives and infects the crucible tree into the Erdtree
          >A powerful woman warrior called Marika from a Numen tribe is selected to be a vassal of the Greater Will and is given the Elden Ring to rule the Lands Between, establishing the Golden Order and killing everyone who won't follow
          >Marika marries a Godfrey and makes him Elden Lord and consort
          >Marika at some point turns schizo and splits into two personalities, has a bunch of children
          >Marika's schizo half for some reason turns against the Greater Will and starts hatching up a plan to over throw it.
          >Godfrey is banished by Marika from the Lands Between, under the guise of estrangement, but really she does it so Godfrey's future descendants, the tarnished, will one day return and overthrow the Erdtree (all according to the keikaku)
          >At some point Ranni also turns against the G.W., and kills her half brother, Godwyn, who is Marika's favorite child.
          >Marika goes full blown schizo mode (or maybe this was all part of her plan, it is not known), and she shatters the Elden Ring
          >The G.W. crucifies and imprisons her as punishment
          >Meanwhile, a war breaks out amongst the demi gods to collect all the Elden Ring pieces and become Elden Lord
          >They reach a stalemate so as a last ditch effort the G.W. calls the tarnished back to the Lands Between, guided by grace, to finish thr job and become Elden Lord, replacing Marika and bringing everything back to status quo
          (You start the game here)
          >Unbeknownst to the G.W., this was Marika's plan all along, somehow, I think. Either way she's locked up on the cross until we reach her, and it is not sure which ending is cannon

Lorelets misunderstand the badly translated description of Root Resin.

Resin secreted from the roots of the Greattree.
Can also be found near trees on the surface.
              Material used in crafting items.

The roots of the Greattree were once linked to those of the Erdtree, or so they say, and it is for this reason catacombs are built around Greattree roots.

There is no Greattree. The Japanese version of the description mentions how the "great roots" were once connected to the Erdtree. All it means is that the shattering (or the introduction of Deathroot) disconnected the Erdtree from its massive root system.

No, it is clearly stated that the Crucible was the primordial form of the Erdtree and the source of all life. It probably arrived before the age of the dragons since the dragons had beastmen slaves, and there's no way there were beastmen before the Crucible gave birth to all life.

Marika's end goal was setting up a superior people through a superior ethos but the golden order became too dominant due to the elden beast and trapped her cycle in itself. Her whole plan was moving chess pieces into place to allow for her superior person bred by a superior ethos to show up and prove her viewpoint correct. The envisioned superior man was always the goal it just gets hijacked by the elden beast and it's fundamentalism. Godwyn was successfully on track to become the next plateau until he is assassinated.

The only good things open world is good for is traveling and creating/altering. Minecraft does the latter well, games like Spiderman does the former well. Anything else is kind of pointless. Elden Ring works because despite being open world the game is actually tacitly guided and isn't actually an open world at all but rather a game with seamless levels with backtracking. The experience itself is pretty linear, which works well. There are branching paths that lead you to new linear "open" areas with their own stuff, so there's a little bit of exploration involved but in the end that's all it is, a branching route that inevitably loops back onto the main path the game sets you on.

I’d had the complete opposite experience. Every enemy encounter made me hungry to move further. I would see something interesting on the horizon and wonder what it was. The first time I got to Lurnia I was floored by the outstretch of land and wanted to explore it all. running to enemy enclaves was always fun especially when it wasn’t just a random soldier outpost. And I remembered allot of the NPC’s. One of my favorite moments in ER was when patches gives you the troll hint about getting to the base of the Erd Tree. Literally thought it was BS just to give you a cheap death. Then I said fuck during the fight and let the Iron Maiden kill me. I fucking söyfaced when I ended up at the Volcano Manor. Naw ER is a masterpiece.

I just think it's a shame that, with no over exageration, 9/10 of the optional mini dungeons are completely shit with copy pasted bosses and simply feel like ticking off a checklist, especially when Souls games were far and away from that style of design and were all the better for it

Through vastness of the works provides the backdrop for a genuine feeling of adventure that no souls game can emulate or provide. First time around you don't KNOW Wetter you end up or how it's all connected, the mystery enhances and nähe the experience.

Is this quality fit the habe lessened on a repeat playthrough? Possibly, but the first time around it's unmatched by any game in existence.

anon had a stroke so powerful it turned hm german
and the feeling of adventure wore off like halfway into my first playthrough tbh, once you've explored a decent chunk of the map you start to notice the patterns and it all falls apart. the world was awesome at first when i was still figuring out the game, but eventually i realized that when i found a random cave dungeon it almost definitely wasn't going to have some mindblowing twist it was just going to have
        >a couple generic cave/mineshaft rooms defended by generic enemies
        >1 obvious chest, 1 semi-hidden chest
        >a lever that unlocks the boss room
        >a paletteswapped version of a boss i've already seen
i would've been far more motivated to explore if there was less quantity and more quality. give me more mini-legacy dungeons like castle morne, give me more weird unexpected shit like the caelid chest trap

There's decent twists to the caves. Like the one cave that brings you back up to raya lucaria. To me they're all distinct (enough). I don't get how people complain they're repetitive besides the textures, they must have their brains wired entirely different to mine.

Last quarter of the game is pure aids. Likely they ran out of time to fill the zones with interesting things to see and mobs. You just fight enemies you're already familiar with in desolated, empty zones. Last place to visit, the one with the tornado in the center, was ridiculous even though you were facing new monsters. Enemy placements and level design were so unimaginative and tired I just wanted to reach the end and be done with it.
Then there's that secret area where you find malenia, the level was cool but you just fight basic and advanced soldiers. It's not bad but I'd like something better for the last zone in the game.
Then malenia fight itself was complete aids.

I think it's because it's very video-gamey, enjoyed in the present moment
Anyone who say the "story" or lore is excellent is good is a retarded homosexual, but at least you can totally ignore it it's not forced down your throat
Also the different playstyles are not balanced at all, the game is piss ez for a few playstyles (dual wielding jumping attack build, bleed build, magic etc...), pretty balanced and enjoyable for sword and shield, but if you want to play for exemple dex/faith with heavy thrusting sword and sacred seal, you get fucked, especially the common ennemies fights i fucking hate it, they put too many everywhere and they're too annoying, threat after threat like you said

      >don't know who that is, proving my point, maybe the summons bitch? she was completely forgettable and pointless
      >bitch who you see once in the game unless you use a guide to do her retardedly convoluted questline

      Yeah, real memorable

I wish, she barely even shows up at all. Melina is the worst one of these Fromsoft has ever made, and the funny thing is they could have at least somewhat fixed that by making her appear at every grace instead of just an occasional one.

Oh, absolutely, I wasn't defending her.
She literally just shows up randomly, says some vague shit, and leaves. She's no different than every other character in the game.

    >Everything is dead. Even the friendly NPCs only have a few lines, none of them really memorable.

I don't really agree with your other points, but in this area I do believe it's really disappointing. If there was a perfect time for Fromsoft to take a step away from their "everyone is dead or insane and trying to kill you" mindset, it was for their first foray into an open world format. We have all these different factions in the game, different orders of knights, adherents to various demigods, the clash between demihumans and the misbegotten and humanity, but most of them are just innately hostile to you and have no friendly NPC representation. Castle Morne would have been much more interesting if you could pick a side in the conflict for example, and it's weird that the soldiers there just kill you on sight when they're already on the back foot against their former slaves.

Elden Ring feels simultaneously too ambitious and not ambitious enough.

      >hire a guy who's known for being good at writing political intrigue and nuanced conflicts between factions
      >get him to write a story where none of that matters because everyone is LE CRAZY
not only that but roundtable hold being a separate zone that has to be teleported into was a huge missed opportunity, ER's open world would have been absolutely perfect for a majula-esque hub village

Agreed, I don't even know why they bothered with getting GRRM to write anything if it wasn't going to play to his strengths. I miss Majula like you wouldn't believe. And then they had the audacity to pull a second "Hunter's Dream" moment in Elden Ring with the Roundtable in Lleyndell, but with zero explanation and none of the impact.

This schizo headcanon that trolling fans of a popular series is actually orchestrated by fans of one particular title of that same series is insane. Get a grip.

see what I mean? the baitshitting DS2fag is immediately defensive and pretending this exact same thread he makes every day with the same shitty copy paste posts from him and his friends is totally just another day on Ganker bro

they got him to market the game
it's obvious he had 0 actual interest or effect on the game, they just wanted to slap his name on it to attract normies

he himself said he basically just wrote a bunch of generic shit about people pre-sundering and a few character names and called it a day.

Funnily enough that was the plan at first. Stormwind Shack was a hub area during very early development, with NPCs showing up there to rest sporadically as you progressed the game.

That sounds much better, even just a semi-abandoned Firelink-shrine-esque location would have been an improvement over the hold.

What are you talking about? The intrigue and relationships between characters and even many of the bosses is phenomenally better than past from titles. Fat Man did a great job.

The exploration wasn't bad, but I wish the game had been smaller. There are only so many copypasted ruins with a hard-to-spot cellar, or catacombs with a switch+door+cat statue you can take.

The similar ruins & catacombs objectives don't really bug me, since they indicate a goal by the area design. It'd be cooler if some of the cellars were hidden more creatively, but the catacombs were always diverse enough.
What really bubs me is lazily reused assets like every shack looking the exact same without any reason for it. They don't even mix up the parts like with ruins, it's just the exact same shack & outbuilding everywhere.

I don't really care that tombs share styles. The layouts and problems you have to deal with in each crypt is different, so it's a non-issue.

In theory I'd be fine with them if they at least had some palette swaps, but they don't even have that. Playing the Convergence mod and was surprised how just adding some props or a different theme to an otherwise generic dungeon really helped.
