Official Nintendo numbers are 114.33million units as of September 30, 2022.

The number should be higher now since there's been another Christmas season since the last official numbers.

The way Nintendo is, they'll release a new gimmick system but fuck it up. Every second console they make is a failure, the pattern will hold when they decide that every game needs to make use of a DBZ scouter that shows some weird VR off to your side or some shit.

          >that's not going to happen
Everything is lined up for it to be a reasonable goal. In fact, the thing's been selling less than it can because of limited production with hardware shortages, meaning that they STILL can't meet the demand for it despite the high sell-through. They lowered this year or last year's forecast explicitly because they couldn't actually produce the units to meet the target, not because they couldn't sell them. That alongside the likelihood of another Pokemon game or two for the holiday seasons, a handful of big titles, and consistent software support means they're sitting pretty. There's also the lack of a price drop on hardware and the fact the Nintendo Selects line hasn't come about yet for this console. Due to the incredible sell-through of their titles, I actually doubt it'll happen at all.

It probably won't get one. Maybe a real small one whenever the successor comes out in 2025 or whatever. Staying at the same price while inflation is blowing up is the "price cut."

          Anonymous

A price drop alone isn't going to make people come out of the woodwork to buy a Switch. If price was the big limiting factor, the OLED wouldn't be the top seller since it was introduced.
Also, if the current gen has proved anything is that people don't mind paying a premium for consoles. Both the PS5 and XSX are still hard to find, but you can easily go to any store and get a XSS.

Xbox did that by there being so much demand for PS5 you still can't find it in stores so people settled on an Xbox, and with half of Xbox's sales being the cut down Series S model that they frequently discount an additional $50 making it literally half the price of the Series X and lower than even the MSRP of the Xbox One S last gen.
It'll be more interesting what the next 2 years of sales is now that supply issues are mostly fixed for both consoles, first party current gen games start dropping, and cross-gen games finally getting dropped starting this year.

Sales will be indeed interesting when poorfags need to switch consoles and they can only afford the Series S. You talk like being cheap is somehow a bad thing.

        Anonymous

being cheap isnt bad when there's profit like with the Switch. Not only does Xbox lose money on the SeS, they probably do too on gamepass, which is why they're adding a shitton of live service elements to their studios' games

Subscription will always be more profitable than retail, why do you think shit like YouTube Movies don't sell as much as Netflix does subscriptions? It's a constant stream of revenue from people who wouldn't buy stuff anyway since most zoomers just play fortnite or warzone. The Series S is basically just a Trojan horse for GamePass and there's nothing to complain about that, cheaper console + cheaper games is always better

It's going to sell pretty well because it's launching on PC as well.

Gamepass is also on PC though. Anyone that doesn't normally use Gamepass but has a PC has access to the $1 Gamepass trial instead of paying $69 for Starfield. Even a full price $10 month of Gamepass is $59 cheaper than buying it outright.
Subscriptions can absolutely make more money than traditional game sales, but at its current price with day 1 Gamepass releases and all the promos they're still running, I would not be surprised in the slightest if they're making less money through day 1 Gamepass games than if they'd otherwise be through traditional game sales. At $70 for brand new games and $10 a month for gamepass, a PCfag can now spend $70 for 7 months of Gamepass throughout the year and get access to up to 7 day 1 Gamepass games at a huge savings to them. Since Microsoft need to pay all third parties to include their games on Gamepass, if they turned a single day 1 game buying consumer into a 7 month Gamepass subscriber they're actually getting less money from them now. If that game they would have bought was first party they're getting even less revenue out of them too.

Gamepass actually has a subscription base in line with the original xbox live. I.E gamepass subscribers are mostly the original xbox fanbase. Microsoft at one point was counting people who used free trials, like Disney and Warner did, to inflate their numbers. But most of those people using the trial didnt renew beyond that.

The PS3 used unique technology like Cell and at the time had the cutting edge blu ray which was whybthe console was so expensive. The gameplan was for the PS3 to have a 10+ year lifespan where by that point production would be cheaper.

                >Anon gamepass loses money, admitted by microsoft
It literally doesn't though, post your source
Because I can post mine. The data Microsoft provided about Game Pass revenue to the Brazilian Commission
                https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/microsoft-generated-2-9bn-from-xbox-game-pass-last-year-regulatory-docs-suggest/
Game Pass generated about $3 billion in revenue in 2021.
As such, for it to be not-profitable, it would have to be costing Microsoft more to keep it running than not. IT would have to cost Microsoft $3 billion a year to keep Game Pass servers running and make acquisitions for the service.
But let's be even more conservative and rope Xbox Game Studio costs against Game Pass Revenue.
Let's assume that, given what we've heard about the acquisition cost of GOTG for the service (about $5-10 million). So for a AAA game (albeit one that didn't sell amazingly), that's pretty modest. But let's be conservative and assume that most AAA games that hit the service cost about $15 million. Let's say that Game Pass averages maybe 2 AAA games and some indies a month in acquisitions, so it comes out to maybe $50 million a month. That's about $600 million to for acquisitions. Then let's look at server costs (for the cloud service). Netflix has said they spend $1billion on their server costs for a streaming-only company, let's say MS spends maybe half of that on Cloud gaming shards for Xbox.
So we're up to $1.1 billion so far (again, rounding costs up to be conservative to my claim).
Now let's look at XGS costs. At about 20 total studios atm, maybe 4 of them are doing AAA projects and the rest are AA or below.
Let's say the AAA projects spend $200 million over a 4 year dev cycle, so $50 mil a year. The rest spend maybe $20 mil a year.
So that comes out to about $200 mil (AAA) + $320 mil (>AAA) for about $560 mil. Altogether, we're looking at about $1.6 billion in costs for running game pass and producing Xbox first party games, less than $3bn

It's worth keeping in mind that Gamepass can be profitable, but if it's less profitable than regular game sales then what's the point.

The point is that they still have both, they have the "guaranteed" money from gamepass + any sales they make.
Having 3 billion guaranteed in a year is kinda crazy while not facturing in sales.

                >Having 3 billion guaranteed in a year is kinda crazy while not factoring in sales.
MS and Nintendo pull in around 15 billion in revenue a year, while Playstation pull in around 25 billion in revenue a year. 3 billion for Gamepass is a lot, but it's still not anywhere close to a paradigm shift or even a majority. If it mostly came from getting PC users that bought games on Steam to subscribe to Gamepass instead then that's perfect and good for them since it would be money they otherwise wouldn't have gotten. If it mostly comes from people that were buying first party games or buying games on Xbox now subscribing to Gamepass instead, then that's mostly just shuffling money around and not so great for them.
Nobody but Microsoft knows this though, they stopped reporting on game sales years ago and bundle up everything in their financial reports.

I think they way overpaid for them too, but the difference is that Sony are including game studio acquisitions in the Playstation division's financials, instead of hiding them in the parent company's financials.

They include them because they also have to pay their "maintenance".
Acquiring a studio also implies acquiring their expenses, Sony didn't think that one through and they've been acquiring shotty studio after shitty studio.

                >if it's less profitable than regular game sales then what's the point.
Unlikely for a couple of reasons
First is a big one: Game Pass is something PC users can sign up for as well. Most PC gamers did zero gaming via Microsoft store before, so this is an untapped revenue source for them.
But the other major thing is the consider average spend
In the US in 2022, Console gamers spent anywhere between $20-30 per month. Averaging to about $240-$360 a year
However, that number includes and is mostly inflated by in-game spend. In terms of money spent on games themselves, it's likely lower since the average person only actually buys 2 big $60 games per year and most don't spend much on anything beyond that. That's why CoD and FIFA/Madden (and maybe one other per year) are such big deals. They're THE games that 50% of the Western market will ever buy.
So let's say that the majority of persons actually spends a median of $120 a year on new game titles. Game Pass is about $180 a year

People forget that Gamepass also keeps people on Microsoft's ecosystem, buying any game or hardware there.

                Anonymous

This is a big one, and a big reason why getting something like CoD on will be huge. Because for whatever they lose in the $60 that would normally be spent on a new CoD game, getting as many people in as possible to spend money on MTX is considerably more valuable than the actual up-front retail cost of a copy of a game

                >In terms of money spent on games themselves, it's likely lower since the average person only actually buys 2 big $60 games per year and most don't spend much on anything beyond that.
If you look at a console's life after it's all said and done, the average high performing console has a software attach rate of 10:1 if it did well, and more than that if it did extremely well. Since consoles are supported for 10 years, that averages out to 1 game per year per user. Of course there are whales that buy tons of games a year, but there are also casuals that only buy a few games in total to average it out to ~10 games per user on average.
A $120-$180 Gamepass subscription is absolutely more money than the average console user spends on games in a year. But if that comes at the expense of the whales then it's actually much worse. New games now cost $69, so 3 new games a year is $207. If they're now subscribing instead of buying, you've made less revenue on Gamepass than you would have in game sales. If they were buying more than 3 games a year it doesn't matter, your price ceiling on the year is now only $180 max if they use Gamepass Ultimate.
Those game deals Microsoft makes for day 1 on Gamepass don't come free either. If any third party deal gets someone that would have bought it to subscribe instead, you just turned a $70 game sale that Microsoft would have gotten a 30% cut of ($21) into a $10 Gamepass or $15 Gamepass Ultimate sub before you even take into account the expenses needed to sign these deals to begin with. That's also completely ignoring all of the $1 trials, the free trials, the promos, the gold to gamepass promotions, etc that drive down the real price people are paying for their Gamepass subscription.

                >But if that comes at the expense of the whales then it's actually much worse
I don't know if I'd agree with that either. I think the biggest whales aren't spending that much on games themselves but MTX. That's where the BIG spend these days in games is coming from on all platforms sans Nintendo.
This is the REAL value of getting people to play even F2P games on Xbox, it's why they offer all those bonuses and perks if you play Apex or PSO2NGS via game pass. This is also why Xbox would probably be fine leaving CoD multiplatform entirely as long as it gets to be on Game Pass. Because getting people onto the Xbox platform on the game they spend the most in MTX on (particularly those whales) is a bigger source of revenue than the game's retail cost often.
I see where you're coming from but subscription models and F2P models have taken over for a reason. The MTX and DLC in-flux has become the generator of the vast majority of revenue and profit in the games industry. I think MS's game pass strategy is more involved in trying to capture those whales as well as move as many people onto the xbox ecosystem as possible so they'll be incentivized to buy non-GP games on Xbox as well

The VGChartz number OP posted is still missing 3 weeks of December, if we assume the Switch kept the pace it should have ended at roughly 121 million units sold. Q4 is usually pretty slow, Nintendo doesn't really have any big hitters for this one and sales are slowing down, so expect another 2.5-3 million units at best. Q1 will have a little Zelda boost with the sales of the limited edition OLED model, if that leak is not fake. Hard to say what will happen at Q2 or Q3, but yeah, it should easily pass 130 million units, even if it enters in the first stage of the death spiral this year.

That's everyone's best sales month along with december. That's the holiday season.
I'll say that MS being able to get back up to 50% entirely depends on if they release half decent exclusives. If Star Field is even just a 9/10, there's a good chance it'll help Xbox build a lot of 2023 momentum. If they can release one or two more decent AAA exclusives after or before then, then the gap will probably narrow rather than expand

It’s a fact. The Wii U had poor sales so it barely got third-party support and Nintendo’s first party support wasn’t enough leading to droughts of new releases, it’s clear most of their effort went to the 3DS.
Xbox games in 8th gen were getting constantly delayed or cancelled in the early years. They bet on Kinect and that really bit them in the ass.
Sony is the only one that had good first party and third party, they just made a simple, good console. By the end of the gen they knew they didn’t have to try cause they were so far ahead of the competition which leads to now where they’re getting complacent

I think Series S will really take off in poorfag countries where people can't afford anything else, especially if the politicians keep fucking the economy with great success. Remember, poorfags weren't really forced so far to upgrade. As soon as cool games begin avoiding the PS4/XBO the Series S will skyrocket.

For gaming? I'm going to earnestly say less than 120 million
And that's not my point. My point is that console sales would PLUMMET if what you said is true. In theory, Pirating and PC Gaming should be cannibalizing console sales if it's such an obviously superior way to game, even for poorfags

Are you genuinely retarded? PC sales are also through the roof. Steam active user base is far and above any console service right now. Stupid fucking retard

Again, not my point. My point is that if someone is choosing between a gaming PC (especially with pirating in mind) and a console, the PC market should be actually taking nearly all sales away from the console market if they're comparable goods and PC is such a better value per dollar spent

Nah he's right. Piracy and emulation isn't popular inspite of being free and available in every household. And like you said, PCs are selling more than consoles, yet piracy remains niche at best because it is unreliable and fucking sucks, like anything that is free.

                Anonymous

It's not that piracy is unreliable or sucks, anon. It's that distribution channels are commonplace enough that buying games isn't particularly difficult. There's also something to be said about paying for something in regards to how much you enjoy it. If you pay for something, your brain is going to push you to try and do/enjoy it more because of the money you put into it. Pirated games just aren't as fun.

You appreciate things far more when you've put effort into them, so if you pay money for a game you appreciate the time and effort you spend at work that went into buying it, making you appreciate the game more.

Yes but it affects basically everyone.
And it ceases being a coping mechanism if a game's main rough spots are early on.
JRPGs are a good example of this: many start slow to try to introduce the story and characters and core gameplay mechanics

                >in reality most of them will choose the platform you can pirate everything on
                Prove it.
Prove that most people who are too poor to get a $500 console instead chose to get a gaming PC instead
You're making a claim that you provide no proof for.
On top of that, I'm not moving my goal posts. My point was that if what you said was true, then the consoles (which are sold at a loss to better reach more people with less spending money) wouldn't sell well because everyone would realize the better deal was a gaming PC. My point from the START was that Piracy and PC Gaming should be reducing the sales of consoles to basically nothing (but aren't, hence why I quote PS4 sales numbers) if poorfags (and by extension, anyone more wealthy than them) prefer gaming PCs to consoles. There shouldn't be a market for consoles at all if PC gaming is recognized as being better by everyone

                >basically nothing
Lol this is just a desperate reductionist argument because you got btfo. No one was arguing that consoles will go away, but in the poorest of countries PCs and hacked consoles are used. Ps5 series x and s do not count.

Ever have a hacked PSP? You'd download 30 PSP games, 50 PS1 games and hundreds of old games, play a few for 5 or 10 minutes each then put it in a drawer and never touch it again.

It does in the sense that buyer's remorse will push you to deal with inadequacies or shortcomings more readily to see how much value you can eke out of a game because you've already invested money into it.
By contrast, a free game is as easily dropped as it was picked up because it cost you nothing to pick it up in the first place, so there's no waster monetary value if you drop it when it's not enjoyable.
Imagine a game that has a rough start but is great after a little while. If you bought that game, you'd be more willing to push past that initial roughness to see if you can get your money's worth.
If you pirated it, you'll just drop it. This is why F2P games have to front-load as much progression and fun as possible, because they know their players have no feeling of obligation to try to have fun with their game and will just as readily drop it if the early experience is lackluster
Buyer's Remorse is a powerful force and can affect the way media is designed

And what does this prove? A free service that essentially monopolized the PC market has a lot of users because it is required to run even Single Player games? A fair comparison would be adding the online users of every console together, even the ones who don't pay a monthly fee just have a regular connection for their SP games. It looks like console gaming is more desirable because if Steam had a monthly fee all their poorfag userbase would disappear overnight.

Piracy is not even an option on newer PS and Xbox yet they sell more consoles than ever. There is the online tax and they sell more PS and Xbox than ever.
When will PC parrots realize if muh piracy would be the answer then nobody could sell a single console. When will PC parrots realize the console business model where you are paying in installments is more affordable than any PC? You can buy a console which plays everything for less than the price of a single PC component. Sales data proves it for decades that a bunch of people buy consoles for a few multiplats. There are Fortnite bundles for a reason.

      >increasing prices
Both because of the previous point and because of crypto mania, new high-end parts are costing more and more money, and thus manufacturers have to charge more and more for the consoles to keep up, so fewer people want to buy them
      >backwards compatibility
Due to the previous two points, people aren't buying new consoles as much, so there's a lot of pressure on game companies to release simultaneously for new and old gen consoles (see PS4/PS5 editions of games, etc) so they can have the largest possible consumer base. This reduces the pressure to buy new consoles even further since you don't have to buy the newest, expensive, hard-to-find console in order to play the newest games.
