Well, to be fair, I didn't know about the CD add-on until sometime around 2020.

Well, it is technically 8-bit, but it could still do a lot of things the NES couldn't do, especially with the CD add-on. Pic related, it's one of my favorite Turbo CD games.

Yes, there are a lot of shmups on Turbo CD. But also a lot of other cool titles like its ports of Strider and Double Dragon II, Mad Stalker, Kaze Kiri Ninja Action, Kaizo no Shubibinman 3, and others. It also got some decent SEGA titles like Golden Axe, Gain Ground, as well as Power Drift and OutRun on regular HuCards

i love the pce. prefer it for it's arcade ports and platformers though, not one of those gross /vr/ weebs. Ys IV is an incredible game though

slew of awesome taito, namco, masaya, irem and hudson games on it. the konami capcom and sega games are nice too

Red was like the pce's Treasure, pound for pound the strongest dev on the system

strider is ok cuz it's still strider and has some extras, but its very disappointing. nec avenue made much better capcom ports like forgotten worlds and side arms

golden axe is literal hot garbage, thanks telenet, though they made an "ok" port of columns

            does rondo of blood count

not really, most of Ganker has played rondo

              Anonymous

Can you recommend me some good platformers? I've only played some of the Valis games, Fausette Amour, the aforementioned Strider, a little bit of Rondo, Bonk 3, Chiki Chiki Boys, a few others. Also how do you feel about Bonanza Bros? I feel like certain Turbo CD games are hard for me to get into because they still feel very NES-era to me and I'm more familiar with 16-bit (Genesis and SNES) style games.

Also the fighting games look pretty good, I've only played Advanced V.G. but the SNK ports look solid. I really like the remixed soundtracks

                Anonymous

most of the best platformers are on hucard, it's not even close. the CD just gets more attention because it has rondo

must play below, some even genre defining
                >rondo
                >bonk 2
                >liquid kids

                >ninja gaiden (i love this port, others will disagree)
                >legendary axe I
                >wonderboy iii dragon trap

                rest are good games
                >valis 1 remake
                >bonk 1 (i love it but i admit it's unpolished)
                >dragon egg
                >wonderboy monster land (fricking hard but has a continue cheat)
                >new zealand story (fricking hard)
                >shockman
                >shinobi
                >tonma
                >momotaro katsugeki
                >pac-land (antiquated but important)
                >rainbow islands
                >zipang (best port of solomon's key)
                >gekisha boy
                >jackie chan
                >bazaru de gozaru (unique puzzle platformer game, one of the last games to be released)
                >kid dracula (spike mcfang is the sequel)

bonanza bros is a great port but not my cup of tea

kaze kiri is a must play for the boss fights and cool controls, but the stages are a let down, and no platforming

strider and wonderboy monster world are great games that are unfortunately superior on genesis

not a valis series fan overall. shubibinman 3 is a weird one, technically impressive but feels literally unfinished

eternal city is very unique, closest to metroid on the pc engine, but never really got far in it

I don't even really understand what PC-Engine is.

The Turbografx-16 in Japan, but with a much larger and higher-quality library and selection of titles ranging from HU-Cards to CD games to Super CD and Arcade Card CD games.

Huh, I always thought it was one of those old TV computers like the Commodore 64 based on the name.

That's partly why it was re-branded for North America since the "PC" moniker would've made it confusing to market.

It is the shit is what it is. It just has a terribly generic sounding name.

I just assumed it was some silly marketing thing since they were known for the PC-88 and 98 at the time. As if they were trying to tell the customer "It's not exactly a PC, but it has the engine of one! Which we are experts at making!" or some shit. I don't know if that makes any sense.

The "Engine" part of the name was Hudson's influence, since the company is named after the Hudson Steam Engine.

I kinda remember reading that NEC used to had the term "PC" trademarked in Japan, hence the use of パソコン/pasokon as a generic term for personal computers over there.

Not only was the "PC" used to tie it in to NEC's computers' branding, "Engine" is supposed to convey that this console is as powerful as a computer. Hence why "TurboGrafx" was made the international name, to make it sound like the best system among the console speed and graphics war (especially compared to the NES' graphics and power, hence the early TG commercials).

The "Engine" part of the name was Hudson's influence, since the company is named after the Hudson Steam Engine.

      This is really reaching.
