Well, to be fair, I didn't know about the CD add-on until sometime around 2020.
Well, it is technically 8-bit, but it could still do a lot of things the NES couldn't do, especially with the CD add-on. Pic related, it's one of my favorite Turbo CD games.
Yes, there are a lot of shmups on Turbo CD. But also a lot of other cool titles like its ports of Strider and Double Dragon II, Mad Stalker, Kaze Kiri Ninja Action, Kaizo no Shubibinman 3, and others. It also got some decent SEGA titles like Golden Axe, Gain Ground, as well as Power Drift and OutRun on regular HuCards
i love the pce. prefer it for it's arcade ports and platformers though, not one of those gross /vr/ weebs. Ys IV is an incredible game though
slew of awesome taito, namco, masaya, irem and hudson games on it. the konami capcom and sega games are nice too
Red was like the pce's Treasure, pound for pound the strongest dev on the system
strider is ok cuz it's still strider and has some extras, but its very disappointing. nec avenue made much better capcom ports like forgotten worlds and side arms
golden axe is literal hot garbage, thanks telenet, though they made an "ok" port of columns
Can you recommend me some good platformers? I've only played some of the Valis games, Fausette Amour, the aforementioned Strider, a little bit of Rondo, Bonk 3, Chiki Chiki Boys, a few others. Also how do you feel about Bonanza Bros? I feel like certain Turbo CD games are hard for me to get into because they still feel very NES-era to me and I'm more familiar with 16-bit (Genesis and SNES) style games.
Also the fighting games look pretty good, I've only played Advanced V.G. but the SNK ports look solid. I really like the remixed soundtracks

most of the best platformers are on hucard, it's not even close. the CD just gets more attention because it has rondo
must play below, some even genre defining >rondo >bonk 2 >liquid kids >ninja spirit >new adventure island >parasol stars >sonson ii >ninja gaiden (i love this port, others will disagree) >legendary axe I >wonderboy iii dragon trap
rest are good games >valis 1 remake >bonk 1 (i love it but i admit it's unpolished) >dragon egg >wonderboy monster land (fricking hard but has a continue cheat) >new zealand story (fricking hard) >shockman >shinobi >tonma >momotaro katsugeki >pac-land (antiquated but important) >rainbow islands >zipang (best port of solomon's key) >gekisha boy >jackie chan >bazaru de gozaru (unique puzzle platformer game, one of the last games to be released) >kid dracula (spike mcfang is the sequel)
bonanza bros is a great port but not my cup of tea
kaze kiri is a must play for the boss fights and cool controls, but the stages are a let down, and no platforming
strider and wonderboy monster world are great games that are unfortunately superior on genesis
not a valis series fan overall. shubibinman 3 is a weird one, technically impressive but feels literally unfinished
eternal city is very unique, closest to metroid on the pc engine, but never really got far in it
What I meant was I just flat out don’t care for emulation. I have multiple consoles ranging from 2nd gen to 6th and that’s what I play. If I find myself with enough money maybe I will get a TG -16 one day, but it’s just not high on my priority list.
There's just way too many shmups. There's only two or three worth playing in the entire genre, if you've played them you've played them all. The rest of the library is cool but you have to cross out like 800 shmups to get to them.
I find this to be the case with SEGA Saturn too, but there are a few good titles mixed in if you are willing to sift through some of the mediocre ones, imo
I spent a few hours last night playing PC Engine. The console was a little pricey, but I suspected I would get my money’s worth just from the Gradius and Gradius II ports alone and I was correct. I tried Atomic Robo Kid for the first time last night. Fun game.

You mean the one that is piss easy? Just for that reason it can't be superior
>a video game opinion is lying
I agree Rondo is great though. I don't know if I'd place it as the best game on the console or not since I haven't explored the library much.
>That's lying, no one with common sense would deny Rondo of Blood is the best game on the console, its also one of the best games ever made after all.
The Dynastic Hero is better.
while I would say that, yeah, console shmups in general were made for small children and tweens and they shouldn't be representative of the entire genre with their broken scoring, long-ass stages, and powerup dodging...they are pretty good for what they are, or what they were back then at least. their idea was to bring the acade experience home, and to make it a bit easier to compensate for not having to take your money all the time.
N word I own a PC Engine just like you I just don't want to play 500 different clones of the same space shooter. I just stick with TwinBee and call it a day.
If Bonk didnt have like a million frames of pre jump I think the PCE wouldve taken off overseas. These games are really fun and soulful but the jumping feels like Bonk's feet are stuck to the ground. Compares to Mario and Sonic who leave the ground near instantly its not great gamefeel.
>calls itself PC Engine >doesn't play any actual PC games that came out at the time other than some shitty watered down ports made specifically for consolegays

Have you played any PC-88 or MSX games from the era? This hardware was more suited for assburger shit like wRPGs, strategies, graphic adventures and of course eroge.
If you like beat 'em ups, I highly recommend Mad Stalker, Kaze Kiri Ninja Action, and Double Dragon II. The Valis series also has nice graphics, at least for me
Last Alert, Devil Crash and Kaze Kiri come to mind

Take that broom out of your ass, some console exclusive shmups of the 4th-5th gen were absolutely better than a lot of arcade offerings
>There are "people" on /vr/ who haven't played a single PC-Engine game
That's a good thing. The last thing I want are EOP normies hoarding all the good PC Engine games.

wut, are you moronic or just dumb? PC engine is famous for hentai games due to allowing games to be released without rating
Ehh there are some eroge ports by NEC Avenue like like Dragon Knight and Doukyusei but they're censored to a non-adult level; they don't even show nipples. Basically the same thing as modern CERO D eroge ports on the Switch.

The Turbografx-16 in Japan, but with a much larger and higher-quality library and selection of titles ranging from HU-Cards to CD games to Super CD and Arcade Card CD games.
Huh, I always thought it was one of those old TV computers like the Commodore 64 based on the name.
That's partly why it was re-branded for North America since the "PC" moniker would've made it confusing to market.
I just assumed it was some silly marketing thing since they were known for the PC-88 and 98 at the time. As if they were trying to tell the customer "It's not exactly a PC, but it has the engine of one! Which we are experts at making!" or some shit. I don't know if that makes any sense.
I kinda remember reading that NEC used to had the term "PC" trademarked in Japan, hence the use of パソコン/pasokon as a generic term for personal computers over there.

Not only was the "PC" used to tie it in to NEC's computers' branding, "Engine" is supposed to convey that this console is as powerful as a computer. Hence why "TurboGrafx" was made the international name, to make it sound like the best system among the console speed and graphics war (especially compared to the NES' graphics and power, hence the early TG commercials).
The "Engine" part of the name was Hudson's influence, since the company is named after the Hudson Steam Engine.
PC engine was just a souped up 8-bit machine and I already played a NES

It's the best 8 bit console though, that ain't nothing to sneeze at, white boy
On paper.
In practice the game is far beyond the NES.
and?
I’ve never even seen one in real life, and I’ll be fricked if I’m emulating anything
What do you mean? It's easier to emulate than the average SNES game.
emulation is just straight up soulless and anti-fun
Baffling to still see takes like yours on this board. No disrespect, you're out of touch and need to get with the times.
Maybe have a nice day? Some of us want the real thing.
>nshittybab is an anti-emulation moron
shocking.
The frick do you propose is unfun about, er.. playing the fricking game?

Cadash and Shadow of the Beast Super CD are pretty good
I know nothing of its library beyond the anime breasts.

does rondo of blood count

played it?
I lived it
I spent a few hours last night playing PC Engine. The console was a little pricey, but I suspected I would get my money’s worth just from the Gradius and Gradius II ports alone and I was correct. I tried Atomic Robo Kid for the first time last night. Fun game.
No thanks I'm not into hentai.
you want me to join you in shit talking others because they missed out on playing Ys?
If you don't mind.
>tfw I played a PC Engine game before I even knew what a PC Engine was

That's also how I found out about it. The game I bought was Galaga '90.
/vr/ is normie territory. There are people on here who play fifa soccer and call of duty.
What a great console, you've got splatterhouse, you've got bonk's adventure, you've got 70 fricking metric shitloads of shmups. It has it all.
There's just way too many shmups. There's only two or three worth playing in the entire genre, if you've played them you've played them all. The rest of the library is cool but you have to cross out like 800 shmups to get to them.
Not enough moviegames for ya?
>He didn't play the superior SEGA CD version

This shmuphead made a video reviewing every single PC Engine shmup, no excuses
and they're all mediocre
I said no excuses b***h, if you aren't planning to play them then don't talk
Which Ys? 1-2 on PCE are must plays, 4 is good too and 3 is definetly an acquired taste, the music of 3 though is a must listen
That's lying, no one with common sense would deny Rondo of Blood is the best game on the console, its also one of the best games ever made after all.

Ninja spirit
Mahjong
Legendary axe

I wanna play the Godzilla game that is a semi remix of the vs game for SNES. the PC Engine CD version has a more cinematic feel to it
Does Cosmos Cosmic Adventure counts?
>if you don't go out of your way to play the fourth most successful 16 bit console (barely released in your country) you are subhuman
I honestly wish most people who go on /vr/ would just die. Just die.
Because installing an emulator is hard
When I install a program, it's because I intend to use it.
So I would never install a TG-16 emulator.
The point, you fricking goldfish, is that the sales being low in your country isn't an excuse to not be able to play the thing.
I'm able to play it just fine. But why?
>fourth most successful
Which one would be the third?
>there are people on /vr/ who haven't played any pce games besides rondo
FTFY
Okay.
Why should anyone care what a pedophile thinks?
Cotton is the only PC Engine game I played, because the music was superior to the arcade release.
I don't like shmups
PC engine is overrated and only loved by hentai gays
