There have been ZERO new IPs in the 2020s.

No new franchise or idea has entered the gaming consciousness since 1/1/20.

Why do we need new IP? For novelty's sake?

      Anonymous

a new IP pushes games in a new direction, instead of just rehashing old gameplay and story with some gimmick mechanics
the entire industry is creatively bankrupt, so every time it's tried it turns out awful
even elden ring is really just an old IP with a different name
only remotely interesting game from From in a while has been AC6, but again that's just a rehash of a much older series with a fresh coat of paint

        Anonymous

        >a new IP pushes games in a new direction, instead of just rehashing old gameplay and story with some gimmick mechanics
That's LITERALLY all new IPs are doing now. His question is still valid. Why do we need "new IPs" if they are just doing the same shit the current IPs are doing but with the assets swapped?

          Anonymous

Rather I'm skeptical of originality. You should collect a wealth of experience to find inspriration for new creations. It shouldn't just be a video game aping an existing video game.

            Anonymous

            >You should collect a wealth of experience to find inspriration for new creations
That's how games used to be made. It was experiences, imagination, and creativity. The problem is that while the experiences aspect may still there, the imagination and creativity part are panned and discouraged in the industry. "Unique and new" turns into "gimmicky and unnecessary". If the game is flawed in any way, they don't have the benefit of being an established franchise, so they don't get the "it's OK! It's [inset well known franchise]" to wave things off. You have to follow what the industry seems to want in and the game needs to be comparable to something else in some way in order to make it in the industry. People crying that they want something new and unique don't actually want it. They want the same shit they've been playing already but maybe in a different setting or something. It's pathetic.

Yeah, that is the problem if every new video game needs to cost "billions" and needs to be the "NEXT BIG THING". You need something that "works" (at least in the minds of the boomer board). Thuse we only get remakes/sequeles.

I really miss the times when we got unique games like
    >Sacrifice
    >Citizens of Kabuto
    >Gothic
    >Warlord Battlecry
    >Savage
    >ET: Quake Wars

Nah. Anytime anyone does a new IP nobody actually cares and just wants more sequels or Ganker calls it forced. Nobody cares about Exoprimal or Kimetsu-gami or w/e, Pragmata is a vaporware meme that only pedos give a frick about.

        >Capcom are creatively bankrupt
Don't you think there is a reason for this?
        >The industry has gotten so big and bloated, they can't take risks
Yes, but this isn't the ONLY reason. If risky moves were rewarded and treated more as "first attempts" rather than "this game that isn't as polished as the most polished game of the generation or games in its genre", then maybe we'd get more games that were doing something different. How about instead of "too ambitious " being a negative, make it a positive that the developers are even trying to go that far? How about instead of "too gimmicky", maybe look at it as a different take on something? How about give games that TRY something different a little bit of a break sometimes and help promote those instead of the 19th installment of a franchise because the reviewer happens to be a big fan and/or the company who made the game pays out for reviews?

tl;dr What difference does it make if every time you DO make something that isn't basically an asset flip it gets shit on or maybe get 7/10s at the absolute best?

Well then, why do games cost 60 dollars stat? People would be more lenient if this was not the case.
I know inflation does it's job but maybe some games should cost a 100 dollars and play the part.

            Anonymous

            >why do games cost 60 dollars stat?
That's why I said in the very beginning of my reply that, while it's not the ONLY factor, the bloated industry is still a factor. If they do take a risk that doesn't pan out in millions of sales, they risk the entire studio being shut down as a result.

One thing I'm trying to say is that people need to be more lenient on new IPs with new ideas and different styles of gameplay or gameplay mechanics. Help these newer games get some traction so that more can be put into these games and studios may feel less like they have keep putting out the same shit over and over just to make it. We can do our part all day in buying certain lesser known games, but these people with actual influence, review sites and the like need to do better than they are.

are you really surprised? the market is saturated and there's nowhere else for games to fricking go. Defining games like half life, dark souls, pokemon, etc. literally cannot be made anymore because there's no purpose behind it. Bleeding edge tech doesn't get anyone designing groundbreaking games anymore unlike when 3d games were on the rise. Games that got popular for defining a segment of the market can't be made anymore because there aren't any new segments to be made. Look at that fricking Playdate handheld for christ's sake.

Life in general has just kind of been on repeat since 2020. Feels like society stopped, then started again but with half the energy that it had before and everyone's trying to pretend that we're exactly the same. Or more that it feels like we're participating not in a society, but a weird mechanical exoskeleton pretending to be society and wearing the skinsuit of the dead society. It feels entirely hollow and fake, like a joke. And we're the punchline.
