Probably going to have it so they're all scaled up when one gym is beaten. Can't wait for speedrunners to absolutely frick this game's butthole open with glitches that cause the gyms to not scale.

We'll see. Gen 2's level curve didn't have to be bad, they just handled it poorly.

I prefer this over level scaling as long as the "first" few gym leaders aren't pathetically low levelled -- experience and levelling up is easier than ever to collect due to raids, exp, candies, etc with these games.

I like this more than scaling because with scaling you're guaranteed every gym leader will be piss easy just like any other pokemon games. At least here I can check out the first gym, then have some fun making a beeline for the 6th gym. Let's say 6th gym is ice, I would look around to make an underlevelled team of fire/steel/fighting/rock types, and have a go at it using the type advantage and Tera mechanic to make up for the level differential. Then I would catch a new team of pokemon for the next gym I decide to go for. This is more interesting to me, because at least I know I can try to make a challenge out of the last 5-8 gyms, rather than all of them being easy. Anyways I still get why people want scaling.

I just want Gym Leader rematches ala Crystal Clear and maybe there can be more than eight gyms but we choose which ones we can do.

Revise the damage formula and overleveling no longer will be a problem. It's the battle mechanics that always held this series back.

To me this kind of sucks because it means that there is only one correct intended path for you to enjoy the game in but you don't know what it is so you have to stress out about it and make sure you don't explore too much between gyms or else you will ruin your own experience

Do you really think GF will not make it as overtly obvious as possible which gym is the "recommended" one to go for next? I guarantee that at the entry of each gym they'll even have a guy tell you something like "hey, this gym is pretty tough, you might want to go check out the gym in XYZ town first!" if you skipped one. The levels of the trainers along the surrounding routes will be a pretty strong indicator too. The "intended" path is probably just following the road in order after they nudge you either left or right from the main school city.

Btw if you venture way off the beaten path and run into something that dominates you, why should that ruin anyones experience? Just go back to the area later lmao.

My bet is that each gym is going to be all equal in power level, being all as weak as the typical first gym leader.
This being done in case the kids can’t read and accidentally fight 8th gym leader tier gym first. This of course makes every gym pathetically easy.

        >Btw if you venture way off the beaten path and run into something that dominates you, why should that ruin anyones experience? Just go back to the area later lmao.
I mean the opposite. Going off the beaten path means you overlevel the gym challenge because it won't scale. A problem in the other games too, but worse in SV where there are two other stories besides the gym challenge happening separately.

No scaling means you can just fight the strongest gym leader first if you really want a challenge.
And since you're clearly someone who likes challenges and doing things the hard way, you'll be rewarded by having every other gym be easier.

Given that you can take on the other stories as you please and that as SV are Pokemon games, each story will have mandatory battles, even if they're not the focus, I wonder how the game will account for you going through one story almost in its entirety before switching to another. No doubt you'll have your mandatory introduction to each story, but if these games are as open as they're saying, you could ignore gym route altogether while you beat the other two, then start challenging gyms last. From the leaks, we understand that gyms don't scale with each other, but we don't know what order Kaka beat each story, how much of each one he beat before taking on something else. While I wouldn't put it past GF to design the games around you beating little bits of each story at a time so your progress evens out across all three, if they're making it open world and calling it that, it would look stupid ion a normie to do that.

    > Did they learn nothing from Gen 2??
Yeah, In Gen5, the Gen5 games are the only ones in this series that attempted to fix the problem because they added soft level caps via making high level Pokémon gain less exp. Every other Gen has just a shit leveling and progression as Gen 2 (arguably worse than Gen2, since the other game shove so much exp up your ass that you’re almost guaranteed to be overleveled), it’s just that Gen2 is stuck being the scapegoat because the Pokémon fanbase is full of shit.

      Anonymous

gen 5's level scaling is fricking garbage and it's incredibly easy to overlevel 10+ levels above the gym leaders with multiple pokemon if you aren't a moron who wastes exp on 6+ pokemon.

        Anonymous

To be fair, anon said they "attempted" to fix the problem, not that they succeeded.

      Anonymous

Except gen 7 and 8 used it too. Only 6 didn't use it. 8 is broken because they hand out EXP items like candy but the formula is still based on level. Do you homosexuals even fricking play these games?

  17. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

    >Did they learn nothing from Gen 2
Yeah how to make a good game where discovery is the focus.

I do think some scaling wouldn't be a bad idea, but it is a very easy process to frick up and boy do I have faith they would. Can easy result in awkward jumps in level, destroying the sense of progress or failing to actually keep up. With how the world is designed it seems like you can only go left or right anyway likely with some roadblock. So chances are things will be done in a similar order regardless unless you purposefully skip towns. The map is probably about 6 PLA zones stuck together not that huge.

The best option would be the easiest gym as a mid game level obstacle and all go up in difficulty from there. Basically a secondary challenge. Alternatively gym rematches should be available right after you beat them, so you have the badge match and then the real fight.
