The model on the right is firstly not to the quality of other characters in Alyx as it is only seen for a split second in the game and shrouded in darkness; secondly the screenshot of the model has clearly been ported to Source 1 which causes the facial textures/lighting to look like shit (grimy pores etc.); thirdly even given these detractions the model looks fine assuming that you’re ok with a Gordon looks like a scientist rather than some messianic badass.
I mean it looks fine if you load it in source 2 as I said and don’t backport it to s1, as I said. Same happens with the g-man models which tends to look crusty as fuck in most s1 sfm animations

It's kind of a result of multiple things. A lot of it is just the higher resolution making details more apparent.
But some of the loss of 'attitude' is just a slight amount of sneer in the lips, and the eyes of the right absolutely were botched.
