There's a good amount of games out there that let you play as a wide variety of characters. Let's imagine an open world game focusing on just one character, exploring their unique culture, history, and civilization. As an open world game, there can be other genres or activities incorporated into the gameplay as the world and story are being explored by the character, like the Yakuza series. Even if the original game wasn't all that good, the setting and worldbuilding may leave room for exploration and character development. For example, Criticom is considered "the worst fighting game," yet takes place in an original sci-fi setting that could be further explored. Let's look at some other unique characters and settings from beatemups and fighting games.

You get to fight all the rejected Kyo clones rotting in the base. Not to mention a final fight against Nameless, who dies here. Plus a secret fight against Nightmare Rugal.

Each minigame has enough content to be a standalone game by itself, so the game world is a sort of game compilation of original games. In some of those games you can find other games, and in some of those games you can find games that have games.

There are benefits to having a sequel in a completely different genre, for example, a Ravenloft RPG that is true to the setting but just happens to acknowledge Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft in its backstory, that way you don't have to have all the baggage of that game, unless you have another fighting game within the game using a better engine.

  22. 2 weeks ago

Or an RPG based on Guardian Heroes, or for a licensed game, Tower of Doom/Shadow over Mystara. The story would simply acknowledge the events of the previous games.

We can extend this to all crappy D&D games like Descent to Undermountain. Have a sequel in a better engine with modern design sensibilities. The previous game is just a footnote.
