These games can be shockingly difficult, especially 2 is basically impossible without savescumming/resetting your console a million times. This and some early Zelda and Mario shows me that Miyamoto actually likes difficulty and it's way more Nintendo's fault that so many Nintnedo games are babby tier

Like, why the frick did they give Pikmin 4 AUTO AIM, a million items that are basically free and busted af rewind? IIRC even 3 already had some of that. One explanation I guess is that Miyamoto's interests took a back seat. For all the things people give him crap for (usually without much evidence), I don't think it's fair to say he's a reason for the babby difficulty in many games even if he sometimes says in interviews that he just wants a comfy experience for everyone

2 is an amazing game anyway

1 should just be skipped imo, 2 refines everything about the mechanics to a point where it's just so much better and smoother even if you don't like the caves

Pikmin with filler dungeons is not better than Pikmin.

Not the game's fault you see them as filler dungeons. The better caves have more condensed gameplay than 90% of 1

Your opinion sucks. Every Pikmin game has its own areas that it excels in over the others.
Also, saying 2 is better even if you don't like the caves is moronic. The caves are the core of the game. There's barely anything there if you don't engage with them.

Based. I made a similar thread on Ganker because I also want to talk about 4 and some turbo sperg keeps samegayging and saying that 1 is better. It's such a pleb opinion

1 doesn't even have two characters (arguably no dandori) and has awful teething problems like Pikmin picking everything up you run into and not being able to switch between them. It arguably has the more atmospheric forest levels and the monologues are better after every day but that's kinda it

No? I made the Ganker thread later and neither thread is even about 1 vs. 2. Though they're also NOT not about 1 vs. 2, it's just that one guy on Ganker took it as a personal slight and called 2 shit with 50 samegay posts instead of just saying why he thinks 1 is better. Most people in the world seem to prefer Soulmin 2

Most people dislike Pikmin 2 because they savescum and try to protect all their 'min. You're not supposed to treat it like the first game, which is more puzzle-based. It's action-packed and full of moments you simply must rush into and ignore any possible deaths. That's the reality of life. No leader can scan a battlefield and punch the biggest threats away before sending troops in. If anything having a high death count at the end of a Pikmin 2 file shows that you aren't a psychopath, that if you fail to save your 'min or make mistakes you simply reassess and move on instead of trying to rewrite reality, pretend it never happened at all.

Congratulations, thanks to the nature of the cave system you are effectively softlocked from finishing the coming areas and / or boss fight because an enemy spawned out of sight and killed half your squad in a couple of seconds. You can either press onwards defiantly and spent the next 40 minutes abusing enemy AI and soloing every enemy as your captain until reaching that softlock or reset your console and try again in under a minute. Don't worry about finding alternate paths for carrying back defeated foes to help sustain your army anymore as they are simply turned into a completely useless amount of money which you can't spend on anything. Now the puzzles are gone and combat is all that remains, optimizing combat becomes essential. Bolster up your purple piks and leave everyone else behind because their job is now exclusively to remove arbitrary blockades in your path before returning back to the spawn area.

Pikmin 2 can be difficult and it can be fair but it's rarely both and half of it's systems are at odds with the other

If you fail a cave 10 floors in you should give up and restock your 'min on the surface. Trust me, I've tried playing the game methodically, and it doesn't work. You end up removing all tension by taking Olimar / Louie out and slapping trash mobs, or worse, using Purples instead of anything else.

There are multiple outs for longer caves. Just return to the surface and do the rest of the cave later
        >but I have to start from scratch!
Well not really since you don't have to find all the treasures again. You probably get to where you were in 1-2 min

This is what makes me think we aren't actually supposed to reset the console. Does the booklet say anything about it or maybe a Nintendo interview?

Might really be that people are just too greedy

Isn't it designed with resetting in mind though? I don't remember what it was like on OG hardware but I think resetting was very fast. Still weird they removed the first game's option to just restart a segment, perhaps 2's only bigger flaw

Did the developers that removed the option to restart quickly want you to restart quickly? I don't think they had a clear vision at all beyond the very cool visual design

I guess if you are going for 100% a few of the cave rooms and bosses can be tough to get through, especially if you don't want to go through the hassle of redoing the whole cave again but I would definitely not say Pikmin 2 is that difficult at all

I do reset. It's not like it breaks the game. it's still challenging and you still have to weigh up if it's worth resetting (which in itself is a punishment and annoying to do) or if you think you have just enough Pikmin left to complete the dungeon.

Not retro, but how do fans of 1 and 2 feel about 4? I was super excited for 3 but ended up being completely let down by it, not much content, multiple captain mechanics didn’t excite me, baby piss difficulty. Curious to hear my fellow dying old men’s thoughts on 4?

4 is really good, it's more like 2 with caves. Just don't expect 2's difficulty.

It's very handholdy. Autoaim is mandatory, and you have to wait a few seconds to through more pikmin than required onto an object. You spend much of the game listening to boring NPCs talk and even when you get to play, they chime in constantly to tell you what's happening on screen and even worse, tell you to revert to a checkpoint whenever pikmin die. There's definitely fun to be had but you have to deal with a thick layer of modern game BS to get to it.

Most of 4 is alright, better than 3 in my opinion. I had high expectations of 3 and was let down and low expectations of 4 and was surprised, so maybe that's coloring my perception a little bit.

Don't know if you care about game mechanics spoilers, but once you unlock a mode where you play through significantly changed up versions of the maps, pikmin 1 style with a 30 day time limit the game became an absolute blast to me. 1 is my favorite, tied with 4 since it gave me a 1 experience again along with more stuff. I didn't like the other stuff as much as the 1 stuff, but I still liked it some, so to me that stuff is just extra even if it came before the part I liked most.

I'm someone who likes 1 more than 2, dunno if that'll make my opinion weigh more to you or less but be aware of it because not everyone wants the same things out of a pikmin game.

I think they realized that Pikmin had a lot of overlap with Animal Crossing's fanbase, which is why they dialed the difficulty WAY down in later games.

“I’ve been making action games for some 30 years, and I’ve been thinking about the difference evident in how their popularity has been gradually declining in Japan whilst in America it has been maintained. The issue is that Japanese who cannot overcome the level of difficulty in an action game no longer want to play them. This perception then spreads to all games as a whole, and people avoid them because they see them as difficult.”
