Now that i think about, first stage starters have always been trash since then.
As soul as the region itself was I agree, it was the first time I think a lot of fans went what the frick is that at some of the pokemon designs. The evos for old pokes also felt unsatisfactory imo. Gen 5 felt like a recovery in coherency but also a step back because they set up the overly cartoonish design trend that only got worse with time until present day, pokemon now being more like a weird nonsensical mishmash of it's original self, digimon, yokai watch, or just whatever else with no thought, rip sugimori
