Is it because Ohshima was still involved?

"modern sonic" is a nickname that people invented later on. Sonic Adventure 1 was always meant to be the defacto Sonic 4, even though it's in 3D and has new stuff.

I tend to agree to this, especially considering Angel Island, the classic Tornado, Sonic 3D Blast music, Metal Sonic (in capsules in the Egg Carrier) and other various elements are very present in SA1. Heroes even went all out and brought back both Metal Sonic and the Chaotix.

        >Heroes even went all out and brought back both Metal Sonic and the Chaotix.

They did that because they had to add in 3 new characters and didn't want to bother coming up with something new that would fit. Later on the surfboard game they added three birds.

Note that practically every Sonic game added a new character.

I think this is moronic as frick. If it were meant to be Sonic 4 it wouldn't have shifted art styles so drastically and it wouldn't have been called Sonic Adventure. You're just wrong.

What are you on about? The art style change was to give the characters more detailed designs for the 3D jump. The actual story itself continues and references things that happened in the original 3 genesis games. Having a subtitle in place of just making it a numbered sequel doesn't mean anything, it could have easily been called "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" and it would have changed nothing.

It would have changed a lot, we wouldn't be arguing about your gay headcanon horseshit right now if that were the case

Sega went bankrupt like 5 times since Adventure came out, so what was a headcanon then is probably not a headcanon now.

Since they titled the game Sonic Adventure and it realistically has nothing to do with the older games, no, only your gay fanfiction about this being Sonic 4 is headcanon

Did you even play it frickface? It's straight up based on 1, 2, CD, 3k, 3D Blast, Sonic the Fighters, and Sonic R. I know you're probably 19 and have all your knowledge from Generations, but if you actually go back and play the games in order, it's crystal clear from context and in-game stuff that it's built on the previous games, ie, it's a sequel.

                >Since they titled the game Sonic it realistically has nothing to do with Sonic
                Lol kid just lol.

Of course Sonic R is canon. The art and music from Sonic R is what Sonic Adventure's style is mostly built on.

This, why is this Sonic 4 but 06 is not SA3? If it's not called Sonic 4, it isn't Sonic 4

The only reason the actual Sonic 4 by name happened also doesn't count because it adopted it for shekels when the actual name was Sonic the Portable, a mobile game.

The closest we ever got to a proper Sonic 4 (2D platformer) was Knuckles Chaotix.

can we stop doing this annoying shit where someone makes a thread about a game but only refers to the game as "it" and "they" and never types the games name in the op? it makes it really annoying to try to find the thread later

The best version of SA1 is Sonic Adventure original GDI (US 1.005, animated title screen) or SADX with SADX Mod Installer.

The best version of SA2 is Dreamcast version or Steam version (along with the Battle DLC which is sold separately for some reason) with mods. It's well worth it for Chao World Expanded alone.

Superficially or actually via game philosophy?
Because this game is more RPG coded than platformer. Plus it's too Japanese and only compares to the likes of CD at best.

Many different elements turn it into a "classic" game. The jump sound was still the classic bounce one before SA2 changed it to the modern version. Sonic's proportions were still changing. The worlds felt modern, detailed and very oppressive, as if Sonic didn't belong there with his cartoony nature, same as the original games.
