this game was never big nor a cult classic like the internet would make you believe, there's a reason why no one reacted during the baldur's gate 3 trailer at the game awards and is because a small, vocal circle only pretend to be big fans like people used to do with earthbound
larian bought the rights for the series thinking they had a nostalgia goldmine, but the truth is no one really cared for the series sans three people and a mangaka until western rpg fans needed a "classic" but obscure western rpg game that was from the same era as final fantasy vii and chrono trigger so they settled for this

ok zoomer
I actually found out about it from my friend, who was black at the time. I didn't like controlling 6 PCs all at once though, I would've preferred a more ARPG kinda game instead. I enjoyed the manual more than the game, it was my first D&D experience, I suppose.
>who was black at the time
>at the time
Hey man it's been a while, you don't know what happens. You remember that famous guy, Will Smith? Used to be black too. Heh. Crazy world.
>2023
>still being white
I knew guy, he was white at the time (probably still is (you know how it goes (because of reality*~~, he didn't realise you had to press space to pause. Just thought wasa very difficult Diablo
you're right, no one cares about baldur's gate 3
>this game was never big nor a cult classic like the internet would make you believe,
I'm old enough to remember when it came out and this is factually untrue.
>there's a reason why no one reacted during the baldur's gate 3 trailer at the game awards
The reason is that it's obviously a cynical attempt to cash in on name recognition.
>there's a reason why no one reacted during the baldur's gate 3 trailer
And that's because people present didn't know the game existed because they never played it/were too young. It's as if System Shock 3 had been announced with a huge trailer, you think most people know who Shodan is? Hell it's been 16 years since BioShock, most normies nowadays haven't even played that one
Are you implying normie VGA attendees and journos care about cynical sequels?
Holy shit your first point might have been okay, but your second post is so delusional it makes you look like the biggest retard here.
I'm playing through the Baldurs Gate games for the first time right now.
I've finished 1 and SoD. 1 was a very small scale comfy adventure with excellent pacing and escalation into something larger than yourself.
SoD was garbage.
Now I've not gotten far into 2, but I'm really not enjoying the high level gameplay. It feels like I'm playing rock paper scissors with mages. Its still got great atmosphere, comfy locations and excellent quests. But I just can't stand the combat.
>I've finished 1
Nice!
>and SoD
I'm so sorry anon
>But I just can't stand the combat.
I've been telling anons, man. Just make a kensai, turn on Kai, and watch something explode every time you swing a 2 hander
Mages really do become super powerful in late levels, SoD was made by tumblerinas way way later than the games were released.
I think overall BG1 is a better D&D campaign than 2 is, but 2 probably is a better overall game though.
Icewind dale is more like BG1 in terms of comfy feels.
I'm probably alone in this but for me one of the most comfy ones were NWN2 Storm of zehir (one of the last ones).
Having played BG2 first makes it really difficult to get into BG1, even if you could plow through the Icewind Dale games which I'm almost inclined to say I like more personally
Icewind Dale... Is terrible. Baldur's Gate without a compelling narrative and chill citites does not work.
I like making funny parties and pitting them against an entire map of monsters. Thinking about having six casters that all use summon monster spells
And fuck you, Targos is comfy.
One is fine if you really enjoy combat (I do). 2 was pretty tedious and way to short.
Icewind Dale is awesome. I don't give a shit about the story if it's not necessary. I've got BG and Planescape for that. Just let me theorycraft a part and go ham. Love chunking enemies with a halberd.
>Mages really do become super powerful in late levels,
they really don't, you can kill most spell casters by polymorhing yourself in to a jelly that gives you 100% magic resistance and wait until their spells run out while you poison them
it's actually melee that are way too powerful in the game since they can hit through -15AC with no problem and have magic resistance
Well no, mages ARE super powerful endgame. That is a fact.
The reason I don't think mages are the powergamer's choice is because their TTK is so much longer than just hasting up 3-4 unkillable melees with maybe Mazzy or your PC on a long or shortbow fighter.
If you like Sequencers, wishing, and Time Stop, then mages absolutely grow into powerhouses if you find that gameplay fun, but if you want to grind the entire game into dust with ease than it's haste+martial party every time for me.
Where'd you get that photo of my room?
https://us.rule34.xxx//images/2668/c6dbd860d32bc0ef0f77ca22129adea3.png
My room was exactly like that, just chillin with my best friend.
No homo.
have you tried changing your strategy? if you dislike the mage chess there are plenty of other ways to fight
I bought because of the box art and good articles at the time, it was worth every penny.
Seethe.
>TFW no fallen angle slave girl daughter wife, to have sweaty, unprotected, camp sex, after a long day of disemboweling gobbers
No it was pretty big with the western fantasy rpg crowd. Not my type of game at the time but still kept hearing about it all the time.
Sex with Imoen
She is your sister bro...
That makes it better.
>bro
I'll fucking kill you, you fucking Bhaalspawn cocksucker son of a bitch
You don't remember it coming out. Either that or maybe it wasn't popular in the part of the world you're from, but Baldur's Gate absolutely WAS huge.
It's true back in the day Baldurs Gate 1 was just an okay rpg among hundreds of others. Ultima 5 and 7 are much more like it... And some others.
Utima7 remake when.
one of the best games i ever played.
i think i finished it a hundred times.
i wont even pirate BG3, though - these larian retards made it turn based - LMAO.
id rather re-play BG1 + 2 one more time.
Icewind dale is also an awesome franchise - i recommend it if you guys didnt play it yet.
>mfw chain contingency and spell sequencer
>mfw timestop
d&d knew how to make mages feel good
BG is very much a case of people played it when they were kids and didn't know any better and now they claim it's the best game ever made.
>they claim it's the best game ever made.
because it is.
one of the best games ever made.
especially when compared to pretty much all modern games made in the last decade or so.
its something about the aesthetics, art, graphics, music and sound that no other game could reproduce to this day.
you're just proving my point you know that?
i dont give a flying fuckity fuck fuck what you think, its still one of the best RPG's ever made - and i, personally, ME - love it, and always will.
>nuh uh its shit
i dont give a flying fuck what you think is shit or not.
I don't know anon, I only played it recently and I thought it was pretty good, can't imagine how much it would've blown my mind had I played it as a kid and two decades ago
"""people""" who make sweeping claims like that do it for (You)s, don't give xir what it wants.
I played it recently and it's one of the best CRPGs ever made, despite its flaws and inherent jankiness from the engine. Back at release it had far less competition.
Present any actual counterpoints that aren't "b-but muh old" and I'll tell you why you're a retard
I played IWD 1/2 several times, and loved it.
For some reason, I always lost track of what my party could do, and my own party motivation, when attempting BG 1/2.
Maybe the attention span of a child wasn't the best to tackle actually paying attention to quests and dialogue , which made IWD so much more accessible...
Are the EE releases of BG any good? I feel like I owe it to them to at least try to finish the games.
As remasters, they're good. The only problem is they add new NPCs that clash pretty hard with the vanilla content, be it in terms of their character portrait or their writing. Thankfully they're very easy to mod out
https://argent77.github.io/A7-NoEENPCs/index.html
Thanks for the answers!
Should I approach the adventures with high level content in mind, or should I assume that my build finishes at around lvl 7/8 ?
I'd like to explore one of the bard subclasses, probably skald, but I'd hate to know I'm kneecaping myself at character creation already.
BG1's level cap limits what classes are fun a lot, but if you're planning to keep the same character all the way through you can plan for the longterm.
The other option is to rebuild your character when you start BG2 instead of importing it, or if you really want there are savegame editors out there that you can use to do whatever you want to your character or party. I used one to make sure my Imoen at the start of BG2 matched how she was at the end of BG1, since the save game import doesn't include party members. I think it was the same for ToB.
Bards are one of the weakest classes in BG 1 but great in BG 2 and ToB
the skald song is good though so if you are okay to just sing and use wands in the first game go for it
EE releases of BG1 and 2 are pretty polished, but the extra EE-specific content they add is garbage. Thankfully you can disable the new items/NPCs with a mod and skip the optional campaigns they added.
> there's a reason why no one reacted during the baldur's gate 3 trailer at the game awards
Yeah and the reason was
>Who is this black girl with blonde hair? Some forspoken type gam… its baldurs gate? Uh…
What you failed to mention, while saying how unpopular it was, is who it was popular with. White men. Had that trailer been a heroic white male warrior, there would have been some excitement, instead of shocked gasps and quiet murmuring.
BG1
Should i just give Minsc longsword proficiency?
Also what weapon types should i give Jaheira and Dynaheir?
Jaheira/Minsc can specialize in whatever you want since they are martial classes.
Dynaheir is a mage so can only ever put 1 point into a weapon type, generally it's safest for mages to use darts or a sling so they can shoot from safety when they run out of spells
Minsc should shoot bows, cause he has high strength for the composite bow and the 2nd point in bows really makes a difference
Scimitars are the best weapons for Jaheira but require meta knowledge to get the best ones. I would still use her with one and a shield since she is more of a spellcaster in BG 1 compared to 2 where she really is great at both melee and casting
I love when zoomers try to talk about shit they weren't alive for lmao
I remember us going to grab copies and booting this shit up at the internet cafe we always went to. We had me, the Sorcerer, my friend with a half orc Barb, and my other friend the Drood.
Shit was so cash and zoomers will NEVER EVER understand.
zoomers trying to rewrite relatively recent events is one of the more bizarre things I've seen in this lifetime
yeah it's a weird contrarianism that I never saw from any other generation
anything that everyone considered good was actually bad, and vice versa (see: star wars prequels)
Yeah, I don't get it either. I'm not sure if it's seething over having missed that Golden Age of the Internet, or a need to 'fit in' so great that they think claiming weird shit makes them seem like an authority on something but either way, as you said, it's fucking weird as fuck.
BG2 charted against the fucking SIMS, and set a sales record for Interplay at the time. It was a smash success any way you try to slice it.
Okay, so this what this thread is about now. OP, why are you like this? Defend yourself.
Don't forget where you should deposit any Harper filth you find during your playthroughs, Ganker!
People shit on the EEs but you can ignore the moronpire and moronmonk and the other retards pretty easily.
I wish there was an EE for IWD2 because trying to play it on a modern high res screen is AIDS
I've always been a huge fan of Planescape Torment but never played any of the other Infinity Engine games until now. Just started my playthrough of Baldur's Gate 1. Playing the original version. I'm having a lot of fun so far.
BG1 is pretty bad in comparison so I imagine you're REALLY going to like BG2 then, and you might even like IWD despite it having a non-story.
I'm looking forward to BG2 but am trying to not think about it so I don't rush through BG1. Eventually I'll play IWD.
Planescape Torment was the best RPG of that era
I really wanted it when it was new but I was pretty confident that the family PC wouldn’t be able to run it. A few years ago I played through the first game (EE) and was left underwhelmed by the story and found that I had grown a little tired of the BioWare formula.
Should I give BGII a shot anyway?
>I had grown a little tired of the BioWare formula.
no, probably not
I think it's worth a shot, EE is piss easy to pirate
