this game was never big nor a cult classic like the internet would make you believe, there's a reason why no one reacted during the baldur's gate 3 trailer at the game awards and is because a small, vocal circle only pretend to be big fans like people used to do with earthbound
larian bought the rights for the series thinking they had a nostalgia goldmine, but the truth is no one really cared for the series sans three people and a mangaka until western rpg fans needed a "classic" but obscure western rpg game that was from the same era as final fantasy vii and chrono trigger so they settled for this

I actually found out about it from my friend, who was black at the time. I didn't like controlling 6 PCs all at once though, I would've preferred a more ARPG kinda game instead. I enjoyed the manual more than the game, it was my first D&D experience, I suppose.

      >there's a reason why no one reacted during the baldur's gate 3 trailer
And that's because people present didn't know the game existed because they never played it/were too young. It's as if System Shock 3 had been announced with a huge trailer, you think most people know who Shodan is? Hell it's been 16 years since BioShock, most normies nowadays haven't even played that one

Are you implying normie VGA attendees and journos care about cynical sequels?

I'm playing through the Baldurs Gate games for the first time right now.
I've finished 1 and SoD. 1 was a very small scale comfy adventure with excellent pacing and escalation into something larger than yourself.
    SoD was garbage.
Now I've not gotten far into 2, but I'm really not enjoying the high level gameplay. It feels like I'm playing rock paper scissors with mages. Its still got great atmosphere, comfy locations and excellent quests. But I just can't stand the combat.

Mages really do become super powerful in late levels, SoD was made by tumblerinas way way later than the games were released.

I think overall BG1 is a better D&D campaign than 2 is, but 2 probably is a better overall game though.

Icewind dale is more like BG1 in terms of comfy feels.

I'm probably alone in this but for me one of the most comfy ones were NWN2 Storm of zehir (one of the last ones).

Having played BG2 first makes it really difficult to get into BG1, even if you could plow through the Icewind Dale games which I'm almost inclined to say I like more personally

I like making funny parties and pitting them against an entire map of monsters. Thinking about having six casters that all use summon monster spells

Icewind Dale is awesome. I don't give a shit about the story if it's not necessary. I've got BG and Planescape for that. Just let me theorycraft a part and go ham. Love chunking enemies with a halberd.

        >Mages really do become super powerful in late levels,
they really don't, you can kill most spell casters by polymorhing yourself in to a jelly that gives you 100% magic resistance and wait until their spells run out while you poison them

it's actually melee that are way too powerful in the game since they can hit through -15AC with no problem and have magic resistance

          Anonymous

Well no, mages ARE super powerful endgame. That is a fact.
The reason I don't think mages are the powergamer's choice is because their TTK is so much longer than just hasting up 3-4 unkillable melees with maybe Mazzy or your PC on a long or shortbow fighter.
If you like Sequencers, wishing, and Time Stop, then mages absolutely grow into powerhouses if you find that gameplay fun, but if you want to grind the entire game into dust with ease than it's haste+martial party every time for me.

I played IWD 1/2 several times, and loved it.
For some reason, I always lost track of what my party could do, and my own party motivation, when attempting BG 1/2.
Maybe the attention span of a child wasn't the best to tackle actually paying attention to quests and dialogue , which made IWD so much more accessible...
Are the EE releases of BG any good? I feel like I owe it to them to at least try to finish the games.

As remasters, they're good. The only problem is they add new npcs that clash pretty hard with the vanilla content, be it in terms of their character portrait or their writing. Thankfully they're very easy to mod out

EE releases of BG1 and 2 are pretty polished, but the extra EE-specific content they add is garbage. Thankfully you can disable the new items/NPCs with a mod and skip the optional campaigns they added.

        Thanks for the answers!
Should I approach the adventures with high level content in mind, or should I assume that my build finishes at around lvl 7/8 ?

I'd like to explore one of the bard subclasses, probably skald, but I'd hate to know I'm kneecaping myself at character creation already.

BG1's level cap limits what classes are fun a lot, but if you're planning to keep the same character all the way through you can plan for the longterm.
The other option is to rebuild your character when you start BG2 instead of importing it, or if you really want there are savegame editors out there that you can use to do whatever you want to your character or party. I used one to make sure my Imoen at the start of BG2 matched how she was at the end of BG1, since the save game import doesn't include party members. I think it was the same for ToB.

          Anonymous

Bards are one of the weakest classes in BG 1 but great in BG 2 and ToB
the skald song is good though so if you are okay to just sing and use wands in the first game go for it

What you failed to mention, while saying how unpopular it was, is who it was popular with. White men. Had that trailer been a heroic white male warrior, there would have been some excitement, instead of shocked gasps and quiet murmuring.

Should i just give Minsc longsword proficiency?
Also what weapon types should i give Jaheira and Dynaheir?

      Anonymous

Jaheira/Minsc can specialize in whatever you want since they are martial classes.
Dynaheir is a mage so can only ever put 1 point into a weapon type, generally it's safest for mages to use darts or a sling so they can shoot from safety when they run out of spells

      Anonymous

Minsc should shoot bows, cause he has high strength for the composite bow and the 2nd point in bows really makes a difference
Scimitars are the best weapons for Jaheira but require meta knowledge to get the best ones. I would still use her with one and a shield since she is more of a spellcaster in BG 1 compared to 2 where she really is great at both melee and casting
